Peculiar fps issue with BAT WAW

I’ve delayed posting this question since the problem is hard to articulate and is erratic. However, I have been unable to find a solution.
 
I have experienced uniformly consistent (and high) frame rates in my Il-2 modded installs – DBW, VPModpack, CUP and now BAT. Well as to BAT, not exactly. And that’s the issue.

Normally, when running a mission, the FPS for all installs is somewhere in the 90s to low 100s and even higher in the cockpit view and as high as 400s in external view when the aircraft is “pointed” to the sky or to a plain landscape. This is true for everything but BAT WAW. I’ve noticed that when running missions in BAT WAW, sometimes (perhaps 10 per cent of the time), my frame rates are comparable to these numbers and stay so throughout the mission. Then, after starting a new mission even in the same session, the fps drops dramatically – perhaps 40-50 fps in the cockpit few and topping out (maybe) at 80 fps in the external view. If you continue, the rates drop even further to the 20s or teens and become unplayable. It seems cumulative.

This does not happen in BAT TGA, DOF, or JTW. In those modes, I can run missions at very high frame rates to my heart’s content. No drop off. When this does happen in BAT WAW, it makes no difference what map or mission or conditions. The fps will drop dramatically after I simply exit a mission, then immediately replay it – same map, conditions, and aircraft. Then, if I exit and return to BAT WAW at a later stage, the frame rates sometimes shoot back up. . . for a while. . . as if there were never a problem.

When the dramatic fps drop occurs, it generally takes place 5 to 10 seconds into a mission.I have posted a typical log, but I’ve studied the logs when this happens (including the real time log – TAB+SHIFT) and there is nothing to suggest an obvious error and there is no crash. The fps just drops. I’ve run the same mission in BAT WAW and BAT TGA back-to-back (since they have comparable aircraft) and the frame rates appear at normal (very high) levels in TGA and poor in WAW – but the logs look the same. (The attached log displays a typical scenario. About 7 seconds into the mission with the aircraft merely sitting on the runway, the fps dropped from 73 to 26 without anything happening.)

The only difference I can think of between BAT WAW and the other modes is the substantial number of aircraft in WAW. However, my heavily modded DBW and CUP installs also have a considerable number of aircraft without this issue. So I am at a loss. Obviously, I can run WWII scenarios in the other installs but I miss all of the good stuff which comes with BAT.

Since no one has mentioned this before, I presume it’s only an issue for me. But if anyone has thoughts, could you post them here. Thanks.

PS: I’ve downloaded and installed/re-installed BAT several times now in an effort to see if a file was corrupted. But there is no difference.

Can you have a look at PaintSchemes/Skins/Bf-109E-1/Bf109E1_6-JG26_Yellow12_EM.bmp and tell us what size it is please.

Maybe post it here so we can check it out.

Seems it is complaining about it not being 512  by 512 or 1024 by 1024

Sadly no solution for BAT.

Also, some people had this issue back when BAT was called monty.

There is one thing that was bothering me, every person have different number of objects at which the performance drops.
I know at some point during Full Monty people started to drop off, performance issues hit me at CUP part 8, WAW in BAT is unplayable for me and I am pretty sure for some other people as well.

The people drop gradually, wont there be an issue when some dropped out at Full Monty, some fell off at CUP, some could not play at CUP pt20 and some got lost at BAT.
How many aircraft until devs start having issues and decide its time to stop, how many people will be playing BAT/WAW at that point.

In any case, I tried to make eras but just lightning air.ini is not enough for me at this point, I think we need era's but not just air.ini eras but maps, planes and objects divided by eras themselves.

Too bad its not really possible to gauge accurately what percent of people have issues with performance in WAW, it would told us whether we actually need eras or lower performance issues affect very few people.

After testing and re-testing, I finally found what I believe is the cause of the dramatic drop in the fps in my install. I suspect the folks in the know will think I'm crazy, but I'm convinced the culprit is a single animated object. . . the signal flare.

I tried to think how CUP WAW and BAT WAW differed (at least from my limited, computer-naive perspective). Then it occurred to me. I like to tinker with the QMBPro missions - add an object here and there to bring some life to the missions. I particularly like the flare, something which hadn't been available in CUP. . .and is not an option in BAT JTW, TGA and DOF - modes which did not experience the frame rate drop.

Went back and tested. Sure enough, this frame rate conundrum occurred exclusively in missions in which I had added the signal flare. Tested a number of other objects, including other animated objects (not all, but many) and only the signal flare resulted in the fps issue.  I removed the signal flare from those missions (then exited out of BAT, a key aspect of fixing this) and sure enough, the frame rates climbed back up to high, normal levels. Put the flare back in. . . down went the fps, etc.

This fps drop occurred when the signal flare was placed anywhere on a map, any map. Didn't matter what type of mission. Didn't matter what aircraft were employed. Didn't matter what other objects were present or absent. The flare was not active at the time of the fps drop. Indeed, the fps drop took place only 7-10 seconds into a mission.

In any event, that seems to have done the trick. Don't know why this happens and don't know if anyone else has the same issue. So no flare for me. Unfortunately, it's a little effect that I will miss.

I've seen a similar drop in FPS. Usually 9-11 fps. Happens in all missions, flights etc. Even dialing back graphics settings doesn't help This just started too..

Earlier in this thread I asked someone to check the size of the bitmap mentioned in the error logs.

The reason for this is that not all graphics cards can handle none power of two textures. So a texture that is 513 by 513 pixels can have a massive affect on the game.
 
Sometimes the graphics driver handles this by scaling images up, so a 513 by 513 texture actually ends up being loaded as a 1024 by 1024 texture.

This can then have a knock on effect through out the engine. So you fly over a building with a NPOT (none - power - of two) texture, you run out of vram and the engines starts paging textures back and forth between CPU and GPU, and hence the frame rate drops.

The worse case would be a texture that was 2049 by something as that would be loaded as a 4K texture. When you take mipmaps into account, that will crucify some graphics cards.

So let's first look at what is actually mentioned in the logs please.

Beyond the BAT skin collection, no other mods installed. Since this just started, I'm going to re-download and reinstall the skin collection, along with the associated fix...

In response to your last post, I did investigate the skin issue. Turned out to be the reddest of herrings. That skin mentioned in the log (Bf-109E-1/Bf109E1_6-JG26_Yellow12_EM.bmp) wasn't even contained in my BAT install, let alone the wrong size. I investigated this and found out that while I had ported that mission from CUP, I hadn't ported all my Bf109E-1 skins. That particular skin had been attached to a stationary aircraft in the mission. When I placed the missing skin in the BAT skins folder, the message disappeared, but  the frame rate didn't improve.

As noted above, I am convinced the culprit was the installation of the signal flare. Since it's removal from missions I had edited, the frame rates have gone back to normal.

At least that solved the issue for me. Others may have a different issue.

PS: In looking into this, I also noticed that same "Can't open file  ...! 510 / 1024" error message in other missions with a missing skin but without any impact on the frame rate. I don't think it's a wrong size skin problem.

By the way don't underestimate the frame rate effect of logging data. In the correct circumstances I have seen a single line of test take 100ms to handle
