Corunna Downs

A RAAF Unseen and Secret Base of W.W.2

Photos showing RAAF/USAAF B-24s and flight crews stationed at Corunna Downs
A black and white plan of the secret base

73 OBU operated the Corunna Downs airfield which comprised two intersecting bitumen runways. One ran approximately north-south, 5,000 feet in length while the other ran approximately east-west, 7,000 feet in length. Both runways were approximately 150 feet wide. A 50 foot wide taxiway linked the northern end of the north-south runway to the western end of the east-west runway. Approximately 20 camouflaged revetments to disperse aircraft to minimise bomb damage were constructed at Corunna Downs.

American and Australian Air Force units operated out of Corunna Downs airfield during WW2. They included 25 Squadron (City of Perth) RAAF and the 380th Bomb Group of the American 5th Air Force. They carried out numerous bombing raids on Japanese bases and shipping.

RAAF and USAAF personnel lived in tents. In its hey day there was a huge kitchen and an open air movie theater.

Credits and Acknowledgments

Textures

Mixx for a couple of textures and bumps from his Mixx_Pac
Whc for a texture and his jungle Trees
Avala for his beach and beach rock textures
Neil Lowe for his Darwin forest and bumps
Bombsaway for his New Georgia Shallows texture

farang65 for all the new textures of Western Australia and one fields texture for Timor

Objects and Population

Neil Lowe for his Darwin objects
Cyberola for a few cool villages from his Burma RRR map (awesome villages  ;D)
Uufflake for his SEHouses repaints
(need a name) sea port objects for 4.09 mainly for the sampans.  :D

farang65 Western Australia towns, Koepang city Timor and my fishing villages from my Northern Borneo map

Uufflake for two Dutch East Indies maps with Dutch names  :D

A Desert Map

Working with three environments the Western Australian Great Sandy Desert, Kimberley Plateau and sub-tropical Timor and surrounding islands I chose a desert map as the main environment since Western Australia is the largest land mass of the map.

Note Choose your skins wisely. If you don't a standard desert camo skin will show on the aircraft chosen.

The Load.ini

Hand jobbing this map thoroughly using a mix of painting map_h for Western Australia and painting Timor and surrounding islands tile by tile in fmb+ the load.ini is very very strange for most load.ini's.
I had to work with three environments on one map so this is why the load.ini is very wierded out.  :o

Note Do not try and repaint this load.ini it is too difficult to understand.  o_O
Note If anyone wants to repaint the map later pm me for a standard original 16 rgb map_T or a basic map_T of ocean and land only.

Note Be careful with SEChurch 10 as there is a typo in the static.ini. This could cause the map not to load. I will get an example of this shortly  :D SEChurch has always been a problem object because of the typo.

See this thread for more info about SEChurch 10

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,34660.0.html

The map was made in a the latest  Modact version for 4.12

All textures are included with the download please add to your correct folders in the main _Tex folder
Add the two main Sky texture files to your main _Tex folder
The sea port objects are included please add the sea port lines to your static.ini if you don't have the objects already.
Add the new all.ini ini to you maps all.i

Download

A Minor error (A wrong load.ini) :-[

Some have had issues with one texture not being able to load.
This may be from a previous release load.ini. The load.ini changed practically every second day dealing with many shades of red and orange shades.

Anyway this is the Western Australia 42-43 default load.ini for both maps.

Just over write this default load.ini to the WesternAustraliaTimor43-45 map folder.

Final Update

The final update for Corunna Downs Secret RAAF Base 43-45 map has similar instructions to the Western Australia 42-43 map.
I included the same update here especially for new map users .  ;D
Again the update is the same as WesternAustraliaTimor42_43 map  ;D
See the first post this thread

I hope I got the area reasonable right with my colour choice. Deep red textures were very difficult to work with.
Corunna Downs RAAF Base a truly unseen and secret base of W.W.2.
The Japenese knew there was a base with constant bombing raids in the Dutch East Indies but they never saw or located the base.

Enjoy flying the B-24 heavies   ;D :D

I left the RAAF Base bare as there were not too many building structures.

Mostly temporary structures all sizes of tents from crew tents to a huge kitchen tent.

I also left out the bomber rivetments as well

I left that for the mission builders to do  :D ;)

Okay, here is strange one.  The 42-43 map loads beautifully now for me, but this one, which I assume is basically the same one, gives me a load.ini error

It can't load the tex: WATim/WA0014fields.tga

Any idea what the difference might be?  The same tex seems to work fine in the 42-43 map.

Okay, hopefully this is not too heretical.  But I could not get past the texture issues, so I just copied the lower part of the load ini in the 42-43 version which looks exactly the same from [FIELDS] down as the load.ini in the 43-45 version, but for some miraculous reason I now have both maps working in both my SAS straight version and my CUP WAW version.  I hope this helps someone else out there who might be having trouble with the second map.  I love this part of the world! and the history of the early pacific battles is lots of fun to replicate in this game!  Thanks for a wonderful couple of maps!

So true with the load.ini.

They are the same for both maps.

I'll check that texture mentioned today.  ;)

Just the addition of the RAAF secret base is on the 43-45 map that is all. ;D

Here is the 42-43 load.ini which is the default load.ini for both maps.

I may have uploaded a pre release load.ini (not the same as 42-43 map just being excited about it all).

Over write this default load.ini into the Western Australia Timor 43-45 map folder  ;D

Disregard the texture mentioned above as it wont be on this load.ini.

See first post for download load.ini update as well.  ;D
