New Map - New Georgia in PTO
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:41:46 PM »

Here's a new map inspired by watching too many episodes of 'the Pacific'. Guadalcanal has already been done and so has Palau, so very finely retextured by redko (a must have, especially for the shallows and coral reefs). Looking along the Solomons the island of New Georgia caught my eye for some reason. This is a map of the islands and surrounding areas with parts of Santa Isabel and Choiseul Islands and a host of lesser ones.

From what i could gather there were 2 airbases, one Japanese at Munda Point and and other American built strip at Segi Point. Both were in odd positions, near to beaches and made of crushed coral. I've tried to use textures reflecting that kind of terrain.

Otherwise it was a simple map to make populating-wise, with a few dozen small villages, most with small wharfs or piers.

All texture slots are in use, except for the 3D forest trees. I think in this case the textures that were used give a good impression of dense vegetation. I've also used several sets of different textures to try and give the islands a somewhat different look.

The Allied flags represent the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, all of which sent troops or naval vessels.

Here is a download link

And some screenshots to give you an idea of the map.

I sometimes use textures from other sources, leaving the names as they originally were. However I see here that there is only a whc black rock texture and a compans airfield texture that doubled very nicely as a village texture. Redko has helped me many times with texturing and points of map making and advice and for that I'm very grateful. And on other maps I've indeed used his textures. On Formosa for instance I expressly used his textures only.

But in this map I apparently used textures I made myself. Any texture with the prefix 'Spain_' are ones I've made at one point or another. Don't ask why 'Spain_' ... as it's just something that evolved ...

I do know though that I've been making dense vegetation textures for a long time without being able to use them very often, I'm originally a desert textures fanatic ... I think I went all out in this map and gobbled them up all at once ... ha ha.

If it's of any interest, the 'Haw' in a file indicates it comes from Hawaii on Google Earth, an 'Ind' from India, a 'Crete', 'Cyprus, 'Java' from the obvious places, 'Arab' from the Arabian peninsula and 'Bekaa' from Lebanon ...

Hmmm ... if by chance you downloaded the very first hour or so, that rar file contained a mistake in the add to all.ini.txt file. There was a letter missing in the line.

It should read thus:

ag_New_Georgia ag_New_Georgia/loaD.ini ....

The 'D' in 'Load' was missing ...

The mistake has been corrected with a new upload link since.

Give that a try and see if it helps...
