4.12 effects question
« on: April 05, 2014, 07:52:40 AM »

Does anybody know which .eff file is used for engine/plane fire smoke?
I have tried all the effects files in 3do/effects/aircraft, but none is responsible for the big black extention that is currently shown when an aircraft engine/fueltank catches fire. This is not an error: it's just that the effect is too much for my taste and I would like to reduce it, so the log file is not of help in this.
I already checked if additional .eff files were added in the sfs files, but found nothing new. So I think this has been changed in one of the class files of 4.12 and this effect is now sharing the .eff file with another game event.. Does anybody have a clue which file might be called upon by the game in case of aircraft fires? (only the smoke effect; fire looks fine).
If anybody knows which class files handles the (flying) aircraft fire and smoke, this would be of help as well.

Edit: screenshot of what I mean:

It is TankBlackMediumSPD and TankBlackMediumTSPD, the big black smoke is made by the combination of two effects.

Thanks for your reply Santobr. I could not find these files in my #SAS folder; where do they go? I made  new TankBlackMediumSPD.eff and TankBlackMediumTSPD.eff in the folder 3do/effects/aircraft with red and green colours, but to no avail unfortunately: still the huge black tube when aircraft catches fire..

Thanks for your efforts Santobr, but unfortunately still no change..
It seems to only happen when the wing catches fire (not the engine itself)..

Maybe you are using an old set of effects, this is my last: :)
EngineHeavySPD and EngineHeavyTSPD
or
BlackHeavySPD and BlackHeavyTSPD

I hope it helps. :)

Thanks for your persistance Santobr, but I already tried these : I changed the color off all my .eff files in 3do/effects/aircraft to either red, green or blue to check which one was the black cone. But this one remained black, so it must be an effect file outside this folder, or one I haven't discovered yet..
It could be that a class file form a mod causes to trigger another .eff file, but I can't figure out which..
Will experiment some further; disable mods to see which one causes the change, if any: TD have altered the effect as well; e.g. I traded my white locomotive smoke for a black one also with 4.12.2 upgrade.
Can't figure out which effect is in use there either, but it's not smokeblacklocomotive anymore for sure..

I love 4.12.2, just trying to get the dots on i here ;-)

Did you ever figure out what effect file it was? I'm in the same boat as you were
