Happy Valley - A Nightfighter Map by Checkyersix and Asheshouse
« on: February 03, 2010, 07:58:07 AM »

This is a modification of Asheshouse' wonderful Battle of France Map designed specifically for nightfighting.

In addition to adding new airfields and extending the map about 100km to include the Ruhr River Valley, I've used several unorthodox techniques to create a better arena for us nightfighter enthusiasts.

1) No town buildings - the map is bare except for airfields, in order to improve load times and FPS when using large bomber streams. I've run the map with over 100 bombers and it runs very smoothly. At night you'd never see the buildings anyway.

2) Darkened landscape - the landscape has been significantly darkened, so that at night it is very difficult to pick cities out from the countryside. Also, the declination has been changed to eliminate the "glowing horizon" common to most Il-2 maps - now the only light source is the moon, which can be eliminated with the moon mod.

3) Clearer skies - the upper cloud layer has been darkened considerably to let the stars shine through, and to make it harder to pick out bombers.

4) H2S / FuG mini-map. When zoomed out, the mini-map will display a green H2S-like ground scan to help bombers navigate. There are no map labels to get in the way, so you'd better know where you're going. When zoomed in on the mini-map, the background is black, to save the night vision of fighters using the map as a radar screen. This works especially well with Zuti's MDS mod by setting nightfighters as scouts.

This map is not intended for daylight operations, and will look a little strange without the lights off :)

Thanks to:

Asheshouse for creating such a great map and giving me permission to post my version.

I just have them bomb the ground. I sometimes use fire and smoke objects as well. The fires from bombed buildings are pretty small from 6000 meters and only last a little while. One of the reasons there are no buildings on the map is because they would show up as lighter than than the landscape around them, which looks strange - it's a problem with the airfield plates as well...

Checkyersix,

Thanks for a great map mate, a really brilliant idea, love the H2S representation and the FuG radar, also had a play with the 100+ bomber mission.

I have one question though about searchlights, is there any way, with a mod or anything, to get them to track bombers better? at the moment they seem pretty haphazard, while in reality they would be radar controlled. Also do they only work with planes flying at a certain height, i thought i read somwhere that searchlights do not track planes flying above 3000 meters (which is pretty low for bombers). If so is there anyway to increase this height?

thanks for any replies

There's a mod by Uf_Josse that makes searchlights work at longer ranges (6000+ meters). Does anyone know where you can download it? It's called "projecteurs" I believe...

Checyersix and hguderian,

Thanks both for your replies, as luck would have it i found it in an old back up disc i had. However there is good and bad news (for me at least). I am running UP2.0, and for some reason if i install this mod i get a game freeze when any of the AA guns fire, if i remove the guns searchlights work ok and if i remove searchlights guns work, but both together causes a game freeze, its a shame as there is definately an improvement with the searchlights in this mod.

If I remember there're some lines you must add to technics.ini (backup the original first). They're in the readme (lisez-moi) file. If you've already done that I can't answer to you cause I don't use in UP2.0 this mod. When I've installed it into my UI1.2 all work fine.
Cheers

Checyersix,

Is there any way you can change the colour of the airfield plates? At the moment they are the default concrete plates i think, that are visible for miles, i was wondering if there is anyway they could be coloured a black colour to make them more or less invisible.

would really add to the immersion for nightfighter landings, and intruder operations

Good idea. I'll give it a shot.

This is an excellent map, serving its purpose very well. I've built a campaign for it: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,7963.0.html

Thanks guys!  ;D
