I have a question in regards to all of this:

Does gog.com's IL-2:1946 http://www.gog.com/game/il_2_sturmovik_1946 include all the updates?

I'm debating between getting a DVD of it via amazon versus the online download.   I just like being sure of it and taking care of most things myself.

Basically for online squadrons and servers that I'd like to fly on, require ver 4.11.1 patch with HSFX 6.0.  I'm worried about the latest update preventing me from being able to have these as well.

thanks for solving my little confusion, if this even makes any sense lol ???

I like having the disk.
If you run in to trouble you can always reinstall with out any problems.
All the patches can be found here @ SaS or Mission 4 Today.

I know nothing about gog

7 years ago I found the IL_2 1946 dvd in a game shop for 500 baht.

Over time it eventually wore out from installing many times

I now use a version off the internet.

gog.com is basically an "internet download purchase" much like Steam or even XBox marketplace or PlaystationNetwork.  There's an account for each user with their own "cloud" space, whatever that is  :P ??? but in that, it's there to re-download anytime in case the worst should happen and it gets wiped from the hard-drive.  I'm debating that download, but it's already 4.12.1 all-in-one as far as I can tell.

The good news is there are quite a few servers that I've gotten interested in that use 4.12.1 now, with HSFX7 as well.

"acesoverpacific"

there are also squadrons I'm looking at joining.  I'm really interested in having fun online in between flying offline campaign missions people have made.  DBW and UP3 are gorgeous, but I don't think this laptop can really take them to their full advantage, so I'm going to wait on those until my desktop is finished being built that has i7, GTX7series, and 16Gb of RAM  8)

But yeah, just nervous lol.  It's only $9, but it still could be $9 wasted if I do it wrong :D  and in that, that's the same as my big can of Yuban coffee on sale!  ??? major party foul at that point!  :'(

The GoG version is a good download version to buy. To date, no one I have recommended that version to has had problems with it installing properly.

I still prefer the disk since the GoG version has already been patched beyond certain mod packs.

I use GOG.
After buying it you can DL it forever. But it is true, it is patched to 4.12 and a extra DL for the 4.12,1

I have a disk, but I also saved an unaltered install of that disk as a backup incase my disk is destroyed or lost..

so this morning at 0800PST I installed IL2:1946 via gog.com and it worked wonderfully!
I installed "setup_il-2_sturmovik_1946_2.0.0.6" only and guess what? it's 4.11.1m according to the tell-tale loading screen!  Basically by only installing that, and not also going through "patch_il-2_sturmovik_1946_2.0.3.9" I was able to do this.

This way I can easily have three versions of the game -
1) untouched fully updated IL2
2) 4.11.1 with HSFX 6.0 for some of the servers I'd like to fly on
3) 4.12.1 with HSFX 7.0 for the other servers I'd like to fly on! :D

so all's good on this end, thanks everyone for your help!

*edit 23:54PST -
well, I loaded the game again, and it froze at 5%.  It became even hard to get into the "task manager" to close it.  Had to go to a full "restart" instead.  I'm checking out some things online as I type this

please see
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,37814.0.html
so I don't hijack this thread, since it's "me" related, I'm sure... not IL2.  Maybe it's Vista64 related, always good to put the blame on good ol' Microsoft! :D

*mental note, getting either Linux or XP on my "uber-desktop" lol

I have just got IL2 46 off steam which I note is 4.12.2. I would like to bring it up to date specifically for the WWII West European theatre. What more do I need in the way of patches and Mods?  (my pardon if this is in the wrong place or dealt with elsewhere!)

Thanks for that. I take it this modpack is all that I need if I already have 4.12.12?
