How to change or add default skins to mod aircraft
« on: February 21, 2013, 07:45:39 PM »

Hey everyone,

Just a tip for those of you out there, if you are sick with a default skin with an aircraft or you want to add a default skin (I've already added a winter default for the Do-17) just follow these simple steps.

First of all, every airplane mod has a folder for default skins. The path is like this:

Plane mod/3do/plane/summer

This is the default skin folder.

To create a default skin, go to conf.ini and switch the Clear Cache to 0, like this:

[game]

...
...
...
...
ClearCache=0

If you don't have that line, just add it. Then, run Il2, go to QMB, and select the airplane mod that you want to change. Select advanced options, which takes you to view the aircraft. Select the skin link, which drops down, and select the skin you want to use. If the mod plane only has one skin (the default), download a skin from the internet and put it in the mod plane's skin folder. Choose the skin, exit Il2, and go to the Cache folder in the Paintschemes folder. There, you find a bunch of junk and a folder with your plane's name on it. That's where the new defaults are.

To change the default skin, go to the summer folder (or whatever folder you want to change) and remove the old defaults (make sure you back them up). Then put the new defaults inside.

To add a new default, create a new folder and name it winter (for winter maps), desert (for desert maps), or whatever map that has another default style.

I hope this has helped you guys very much.

    Cheers ;) ;) ;),

P.S. This is very similar to vpmedia's directions for adding default skins to his skin mod. But some of the folders don't work in the skin mod or there isn't one, which caused me to realize another default skin location, which was mentioned above.

You're right about the TypeClouds setting, this was my mistake. Thanks for the heads up, I've changed the above post accordingly.
For Effects=2 setting a warning has been added, however it should work well on current mid-range hardware as long as no conflicting mods are installed.

Best regards - Mike
