Hokkaido WIP Bombsaway water shallows and water colour
« on: January 18, 2010, 04:42:36 AM »

Well,

After going nuts with some new maps over a short break here is the first of a WIP

It is Hokkaido, Kuril Islands, and Sahkalin Russian territory

The texture method applied initially is Clockwatcher's in house Microdem texture method.

I like to be able to see if all the textures suit on an instant basis hence the layer cake effect.

I use this method to check all textures to see if they look natural and fit into the landscape.

I then move on to Viking's method of using a map-h and threshold applying that technique as new map_T

The textures are from the region Hokkaido and the Kuril islands. The Kuril Islands are a very rugged a d inhospitable group of islands. Hokkaido obviously a built up and environment.

With the pictures. Do not worry about the coast line textures I'll be refining that this week.

Wood will be placed on the texture below the snow capped mountains and on the forest to give it a more forested effect.

When I finish the new map_T you can compare the two methods.

Comments and criticism welcome

Cheers Kirby

No harm in having two maps.

Every person thinks differently when they decide to do a map.

I did mine for Post War/Cold war scenarios.

People can compare the work and compare any bugs/problems or no problems with maps.

If everyone wants I'll keep mine to myself!

Having two maps of the same place is fine with me. Il2 is a free world. Someone cant call dibs on maps planes or whatever. I want to fly on your map Farang. Dont get disscouraged.

Furthermore, I belive superimposing Maps are grate.

You can do progresive campaigns advancing through the area without having a hhuge memory Hog map that has to be scaled down to fit Il-2 constrains... Right?

Please do continue this version of Hokaidao.
Who knows maybe someone can do a the Kuril Isl. map includin more Russian territory further north east.

Thanks Baco,

Progressing steadily you'll see a map_T compare this weekend from a couple of methods.
After the textures are sorted out from the comparison, some textures could fit in easily to that area you mentioned.

You'd have to have some more Russian textures.

Don't worry, that area you mentioned has also been made for a later time.

Thanks Neil,

Here's some WIP this week end editing the Kuril Islands

Some Islands look the some but other islands have a completely different landscape

Here's a comparison

First picture is of that layer cake effect again. The following pictures are edited islands

Cheers Kirby  (Hokkaido editing for next week end)

Hokkaido has been edited  ;D
I just have to do some fine 3d editing with Hokkaido today.

Russian Territory texture editing this week.

I took CY6's sky raider for a tour on it for the first time to check textures. 8)

Coming up this week rivers, roads cities and towns.

This map is a one season map. You still get the feeling that it is quite cold especially with the snow capped mountains.

The terrain seems a bit extreme, like the distances have been reduced, but the elevation is the same.  I've certainly never been up there, so maybe it is super spikey. ;)

From the pictures above the map looks to be 1:2 or 1:4. Nothing wrong with that :)

A trick for making the terrain a little less jagged is to use the "blur" tool on the map_h.tga.

Thanks Guys,

I've looked at Google Earth many many times in the island region, Hokkaido and Sakhalin.

The textures are all from the area /Google Earth textures.

The terrain is like that there are volcano remains and I think these islands are on the fault line. They are very baron islands with very little population.

I can show you a picture of a small island with an old volcano that has turned into a lake.
Small island but interesting with two levels of water.

People have been commenting about the other Hokkaido map about its lack of a heighty landscape. (Over on the other site)

I've used blur sometimes but it tends to cut the height down quite a lot.

Now my scaling map_h and map_T 200 pixels map_c 50 pixels.

I used Clock Watchers method for this.

Cheers Kirby

That sure is an interesting landscape Kirby, plenty of variety for textures on that.  Mark, (Bombsaway), has a rather lovely volcanic texture that would look superb in parts of this map.

Here it is as a trial on my Vietnam map.

Wishing you all the best, Pete. :)
