but does the tail wheel and tube structure realy need so many polygones? overkill? ;-)

That's what optimize modifier is for   ::)

I was too lazy/tired to use it before making screenshots.   ;)

[LiddleMaus]

It's coming along well. I've got the Hawk III franken plane at the moment. This one will be great to have. Just the thing for my Gran Chaco War campaign. No doubt, Sino-Japanese war buffs will be interested too.

cheers

OK leperemagloire It looked big and bulky like a 1930s radio, that's all.

Just an average weekly update.

Curtis Hawk III, Model 68C

Curtis BF2C-1 "Goshawk"

(Left: FB2C / Right: Hawk III)

Lastly, additional details:

..................................

In concluding, the struts still need a bit of detailing. Also, I will have to begin work on the grills, and and render any other fuselage/wing details I may have missed. Next month (which is soon), I will begin work on the engine and landing gear     ::) .....wish me luck.

Thanks to LiddleMaus this plane should be flying around the Gran Chaco and Hangkow reasonably soon.
Keep up the good work.

Good question. We're looking at a grand total of 8,485 polygons (counting both externals and internals). Yeah, I couldn't believe it too when I saw it. Here's a screenshot:

To my understanding, I just need to cut the plane into pieces once I'm done. And, keep each individual smaller piece below 3,000 poly. But, correct me if I'm wrong.  ;)

Oh and for the record, I mostly shape pieces from default polygons -- mainly cylinders. The splines frames from earlier were used as guides when forming the polygon. I rarely do spline modeling. But when I do, I use it for more complex shapes. Also, I avoid turbosmooth (and any surface modifier) like the plague.

Looks very good so far...  :)
...and I hate to say it, but what you need to take care when looking at the polycount for IL-2, is not number of polys but number of tris (triangles in the mesh).
If you right-click  over the title of the viewport in 3dsMax and choose in the menu that appears, the option "configure...", you will find in the new opened window, a tab called "statistics".
There you can check some options to hide/unhide certain items. One of those being "tris". (looking at your screenshots you should have it unchecked, as it is on default)
If you check now this option you will see that actually your polycount is a bit shorter of 17.000 tris...
