Il-2 skin map?
« on: March 02, 2012, 05:12:43 AM »

OK, I'm in a process of making skins for IL-2 type 3 and there seems to be a mismatch in cammo

anyone know where this green part is located on the template?

This is NOT a subforum to ask any kind of stuff.

This to ask ONLY *mod* problems questions. Skinning is not modding.

EDIT: it was on tech help forum and I moved it to the lounge, which is good enough.

Sorry, didn't even see the mistake...
Any way to move it to Skishop (if that's the right place)?

Thanks for the link - it worked flawlessly!

The weird thing is that some parts of the skin apply to both sides, which makes cammo schemes a pain...

a problem inherent to several il-2 planes, unfortunately.
i guess it might be solved by completely remapping the plane's 3d, but i reckon that's a bridge too far just for a smallish issue with the skin... :P

Yes a simple matter of remapping in 3ds, problem is you would have to re-export every piece (LOD's etc) because each part contains it's own mapping coordinates and not just LOD_0.

I agree, it is pointless remapping a skin for such poor 3d model...

possibly in the future some brave souls might decide to tackle the IL-2's 3d, a la the fantastic MiG-3 rework, which would be awesome, and in that process, could map the skin properly.
we live in hope. ;)

Maybe this helps to better understand what happens:

As you can see, there's a small bit on both parts of top horizontal stabilizer fairing, (the highlighted areas) that falls OUTSIDE of the boundaries of the texture. whenever this happens the part affected takes the texture from the opposite
side. (like if the texture is tiled, side to side in this example, but also can be, top-bottom) Each one of the parts mapped this way, takes the texture from the opposite side of the skin, making it look as mirrored.

this is the end of the tail seen from top view:

There are two different repeating patterns that you can see in the blue and yellow areas, (sorry for the crap editing).

In the skins for the IL-2 I've seen, most have this part painted with the same colour in both sides to overcome this.
hope it helps.

Good skin as i think, thank you.
For mapping issues try this: http://forum.aviaskins.com/showthread.php?t=2072 or same thing at SAS: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=14554.0
