Do217K-1/K-2's engines in historical
« on: January 18, 2012, 11:55:09 PM »

I want to know which type BMW801 engines Do217K-1/K-2 had in historical.

At Team Daidalos's FM, Do217K-1/K-2 have BMW801ML engines.
1st "M" shows engine pylon standard "Motoranlage", not engine's type.
2nd "L" is the engine type - Toropical version of BMW801A.
I read TD's BMW801ML specs... that is the same BMW801A I researched on web (like wikipedia).

And Deutsch(Germany) wikipedia shows - Do217K-1/K-2 had BMW-801L-Doppelsternmotoren mit 1.560 PS Startleistung.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_217
This is matching TD's FM.

But at Japanese wikipedia or other Japanese writing web pages show different about Do217K-1/K-2.
In Japanese written, Do217K-1/K-2 had BMW801G-2.
BMW801G-2 was the low geared version of BMW801D-2, it was 1700~1730 PS. More 100 PS powerful than BMW801L.
And Japanese wikipedia shows Do217E-2 had BMW801A and Do217E-4 had BMW801L.

I'm confused now.
That Do217K-1/K-2 had BMW801G-2 story is... someone write books about Do217 in Japanese, and believed in Japan.
But German not.
Do217 was German airplanes...

I read again Deutsch wikipedia about BMW801 engines
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_801
This page shows BMW801A(L) were built between 1940~1942.
At 1942, BMW801D-2 and G-2 were started.
I think this BMW801 version-up times, Do217K-1/K-2 had BMW801G-2 is reliable.
Deutsch wikipedia isn't right.
How do you think?

And one more...
BMW801 series had "counter rotating variations" for twin engines bombers.
BMW801A's counter rotating version was BMW801B.
BMW801G's counter rotating version was BMW801H.
When 1 bomber had 1 BMW801A left and 1 BMW801B right, engine torque is erased by counter.
But this isn't implemented in TD's FM.
If you agree me, I retouch Do217's FM implementing this counter rotating engines.

Ok, so English language Wiki list the pre-production 217E-0 as having 1,560 PS 1,147 kilowatts (1,538 hp) BMW 801A engines. Next, the E-4 : BMW 801L engines. Next, the K-0: Two 1,560 PS BMW 801L radial engines. All models afterward up to K3 have the same until Do 217M : Bomber; Do 217K with 1,750 PS 1,287 kilowatts (1,726 hp) DB 603A inline piston engines.

Wiki isnt the best research tool available, so will have a look at some of my reference material and get back to you if it says anything different.

(EDITED)
I'm told this BMW801G-2 story is denied even in Japan, so BMW801ML is right.

This is written in the book "Famous Airplanes of the World. No.145 Do217" (Sekai no Kessaku-ki = Masterpiece airplanes of the world).
Author is KUNIE Takao. He is well-known in Japan as an experts of airplanes.

ISBN-10: 4893191993 / ISBN-13: 978-4893191991 / Published in July 2011.

KUNIE Takao write "Do217 K-1/K-2 had BMW801ML".

Just to confuse things further, the Luftwaffe Resource Centre states:
Do 217E-2 & J-2:
Model: BMW 801A or 801M
Type: 18-Cylinder two-row radial
Number: Two       Horsepower: 1,580 hp

Do 217K-2:
Model: BMW 801D
Type: 18-Cylinder two-row radial
Number: Two       Horsepower: 1,700 hp

Then, according to 'Profile 261' (which is very extensive and well researched), the 217E-0 is listed as having BMW 801MA's of 1580 PS, the 217E2 having BMW 801 ML's (no horse power figure) and the 217E4 having the BMW 801 C of 1580 PS.

The K series (K1 to K3) listed as having the 1700 PS 801 D's.

The 801L was the same as an 801A/B but with a tropical filter and the hydraulic prop control mechanism. An 801C was classed as a 'hunter' (fighter) engine with A,B,G,H & L being 'bomber' engines. The 801B was the 'anti clockwise' rotating engine.

The M prefix (Motoranlage (M)), means the engine was delivered complete with cowlings and ancillaries as a 'power egg', ready to be bolted onto the aircraft. So you could get ML's, MD's etc

Oh yeah, and the 801G was a bomber engine, derivative of the 801D-2 with other propeller reduction (D-2: Hunter (fighter) engine with two-speed supercharger similar to 801C with higher compression, 100-Oktan-Treibstoff (100 octane fuel) (1700PS and MW50 boost)

My opinion is that the K models were probably fitted with both the G and the L, depending on what was available and what a particular squadron was tasked with doing. I think TD's choice of the ML is valid, rated at 1560 PS.

That Luftwaffe Resource Centre is errotta.
All BMW 801 series is 14-Cylinder, not 18.
18 was the prototype of BMW801 = BMW132.

But Horsepower spec data is reliable, I feel.

Sorry, I misread Japan forum's written thing.
Edited my #4 comment.

BMW801ML is valid for Do217K-1/K-2, too.

Yes, you are quite right- the BMW 801 is a 14 Cylinder two row radial. Must be a type-o at the Luftwaffe Resource Centre!!

And yes, I think the 'L' model is correct for IL2's  Do 217K-2.
