Finland - Suomussalmi Map
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:57:50 PM »

It may be a bit of the same, but then again this is an area where the Winter War was fought. And since in this far northern region inhabitants and villages are scarce, it is easy to populate with objects. And so here is new map, soon to be posted of part of Finland - Suomussalmi.

The idea for the map was suggested by Cracken and Kapteeni as an inhabitant helped out naturally. The map will be in the traditional summer-autumn-winter formats, but here are a few screenshots of the summer version.

please note that this version has several 2048 textures and that the populating of airfields and a few of the larger villages is still minimal, but functional

Yes. Can be used along with the Lapland map to make a very scenic campaign! :)

We are almost ready with the map - just some villages and harbors to make.

In the meanwhile, here are a few shots of the autumn map ... the first one is of the summer map to show the difference in colors...

A campaign combo map pack with the Lapland map seems very appropriate to me. I mean the maps practically connect so this seems a logical progression. Looking forward to this...

I do not think that the above are on this map - but probably will be on another one for the area further north.

I also believe that kapteeni made one winter map in which water is frozen solid and which allows landing of aircraft on frozen water.

ahh too bad... we lack only a small part to include F19 area on this map

Actually F19 was pretty much in charge of the air cover up here during winterwar as the Finnish squadrons focused to support the troops on Karelian Ithmus and the area around Salla/Märkajävi was pretty much the area up here which saw any action.Other than that is was quite calm here.

BTW. If this is to depict a map for the Winterwar I would loose the German flag in the map,, The Germans ept a very low profile during winter war due the Ribbentrop/Molotov pact...

too bad I saw this work beeing done so late.. the map would indeed be covering more important areas if we saw some more around Kemijärviand Rovaniemi and eatstwards towards Salla... the Salla front was crucial.

Still very nice map!! thank you

A great coverage would have been:

more here:
http://www.oocities.org/finnmilpge/fmp_faf_f19.html

reenactment here

For us in F19 it would be so cool to fly on a correct map.. We made the J8 (Gladiator MKI) flyable back in 2003 (F19_Haddock) ..what a nice addition this would be :D

But still.. even though most of the action was at the Salla border, F19 had bases also around Oulujärvi lake(Ulrik 2) and Oulu (Ulrik)

I see that those airfields are on your map!! yippii

Don't worry about covering the area. More maps will be done ... we aim to make Finland the first large nation in surface area to be completely mapped for Il-2 ... the Suomussalmi map was so large already there had to be a cut-off point somewhere ... I think there are just 2 more maps to go for the rest of the country.

The German flag is there because this map will also be useful for 1944-45 scenarios ... or so I am told at least ... by making these maps I am also learning more about the history of the areas covered.
