Hey Starfighter,
No, I have not seen the paintscheme you showed in response to my request. I like it, but as far as I understand, based on the recollections and (alleged - I have never seen a representation of the painting referred to) evidence of a painting in the possession of Hampton Gray's former CO as I outlined in my linked thread,
your HMS Formidable skin would be correct, except that LtCmdr Bigg-Wither, 1841s CO at the time stated that the 1841 Sqdn Corsairs had been repainted prior to the ship's last WWII operational sortie, so that their Sqdn # (1) and the AircraftID # were separated by the rondel, rather than all in one numeral following the rondel.
Further, the commonly accepted aircraft ID number (*115) represented when referring to Hampton Gray's VC earning sortie in Onagawa Bay Japan August 9, 1945 cannot be correct if RN flight records are considered. In my opinion, Bigg-Wither's comments are of serious import to aviation historians who typically misrepresent the aircraft flown by Hampton Gray in art, even much used in museums!
If you have interest in this skin or a correct 1841 Sqdn skinset, read my thread and check out the info in it. If you can find further more accurate or precise info I would very much like to hear it.
Thanks for your interest.
Sincerely,
Kopfdorfer
