Well, its a non-Il-2 related choice really...
I have since late 2000 had a history of ATI cards (coincidence, back then i didnt have a clue), had no real issues with them, and IF i had a problem, it was because i had fudged things up myself.
so i was sitting here and comparing things... 570, 580, 6970, 6990...
what i requested was :2 Gigs of memory either series 500+ or 6000+ card, two monitors
i red a few articles on both cards, or more, the entire family of cards. User and tech opinions, numbers i understood, and politics i did not.
These articles did not really help me, because there was a lot of Hype in them, and they were debating "the best card in the world" all the time.
I did not want "the best card" - i wanted an excellent card, one that can do more i need right now, and for the two upcoming years.
then i took a look at the tech specs of both cards, compared them in two browser tabs. I asked myself technical questions.
do i have the PSU power and connectors to run them? (PCI-e 6pin + PCI-e 8Pin). Yes i had them both. Am i aware that this will "up-grade" my electricity Bill? Connectors? resolution?
I was Favoring the 570 by then: for price and Il-2 features (perfect wate), and a vague feeling that the Nvidia Crew was more gamer-like, the ATI side being more for professional Graphics work, movie-making and similar.
In the end, i wanted to know what the constructors thought of their own creations.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gtx-580-us.htmlNvidia lost it with the following statement:
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580 is the world's fastest DirectX 11 GPU. With screaming performance and an innovative new thermal design, GeForce GTX 580 rips through the latest games while running quieter than the previous generation. GeForce GTX 580 – don't play DX11 without it.
i thought: what arrogant B-starts you are, thinking that, once you have one inch of advance, to write such self glorifying things about your own products. (mumble mumble, grunch)
all four cards, 570/580 and 6990/6970 gave me what i needed, and i was even ready to shove out 500 balls for a 580
So, in the end, the ATI card
-with 2 GB instead of 1,5, (+33%),
-a longstanding "habit" of using their cards,
-Nvidia shooting themselves in the foot with such a "we are the roxxorx" statement
have made up my mind.
Again, like with single engine fighters: there is no "one best" card out there. Its an ongoing war/race, and the Card does not matter. The Pilot does.
