Yea redrum, that looked more like a Monitor resolution too, the other being the Vidcard. Wasnt sure tho...

Well, CWMV, if you are able and willing to do the change, go for it.
i would not say that the ram is running at half speed, maybe more like your RAM is ok, but the Mobo can not let it run on full pull or something wonky like that.

i am the type of guy who likes to think things through, and spend a lot of time looking for the "one" thing that slows me down.
and then replace that "one" thing. Always tight for cash. students life.

So, if you really wanna go get that upgrade, then by all means do.
OEM PCs ... not the best gaming platforms anyway.

Ok Lets do it then.
Whats your budget, what are your ideas?
2x4 GB DDR3 1333, and a new mobo, right? What are the artickles you are looking at?

CWMV,

After reading this thread, I would like to offer a suggestion or two.

 1. Will the HP let you enter the BIOS to check the RAM timing and other settings? If you are not familiar with tweaking the BIOS, forget this.

2. With DBW, I can use Plutonium only with the class files removed but still get fairly good effects. I now use the HSFX control sfs for my effects.

I built my current setup and spent hours tuning for FSX which resulted in DBW running smooth, so please ask if you have  any questions. I have also tuned the off-the-shelf machnes but HundertzehnGustav
probably has as well and he offers good advice as do a lot if the 'hardware' guys here.

My system is now 2+ years old and I have no intention of changing soon.

P6T Deluxe MB, i7 920 @ 2.8 (FSX runs smoother not overclocked, go figure), 6 Gb 1600 RAM, 460 video card running driver 275.33, Win7 64 Home.

You know whats really pathetic is the lack of computer stores around here. Its been wiped out by console gamers.
110G thanks much, will reply after class!

and its an ATI card... a choice that was hard to make in the face of IL-2s Nvidia features.
before i had like  "maxed" not "perfect" settings 1280x1024, 10 Fps and hickkups.
Couldnt hit a Barn door with a B-17 Profile on it.

Things is smooth now 1920x1200, and my Playing time can finally be used to relax, not twisting toes and gritting teeth in frustration.
No, i do not have a life that does not involve my Joystick Keyboard and Mouse. ;D
lets see what DBW can do to my new hardware. Burn, Ati, Burnnnnnnnnn :P

Hello 110

May I ask you what made you choose a ATI 6970.Was it the price compared to NVIDIA or the fact that it allows you to run more than 2 screens and that it has more video RAM than NVIDIA.
What about all  those little "problems" of ATI with Il2 ?
I am myself considering building a new rig but  I can't decide between ATI 6970 and NVIDIA,say 580.
Thanks for the infos.

Well, its a non-Il-2 related choice really...

I have since late 2000 had a history of ATI cards (coincidence, back then i didnt have a clue), had no real issues with them, and IF i had a problem, it was because i had fudged things up myself.
so i  was sitting here and comparing things... 570, 580, 6970, 6990...
what i requested was :2 Gigs of memory either series 500+ or 6000+ card, two monitors

i red a few articles on both cards, or more, the entire family of cards. User and tech opinions, numbers i understood, and politics i did not.
These articles did not really help me, because there was a lot of Hype in them, and they were debating "the best card in the world" all the time.
I did not want "the best card" - i wanted an excellent card, one that can do more i need right now, and for the two upcoming years.

then i took a look at the tech specs of both cards, compared them in two browser tabs. I asked myself technical questions.
do i have the PSU power and connectors to run them? (PCI-e 6pin + PCI-e 8Pin). Yes i had them both. Am i aware that this will "up-grade" my electricity Bill? Connectors? resolution?

I was Favoring the 570 by then: for price and Il-2 features (perfect wate), and a vague feeling that the Nvidia Crew was more gamer-like, the ATI side being more for professional Graphics work, movie-making and similar.

In the end, i wanted to know what the constructors thought of their own creations.
http://www.amd.com/de/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6970/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6970-overview.aspx#2
and
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gtx-580-us.html

Nvidia lost it with the following statement:
Quote
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580 is the world's fastest DirectX 11 GPU. With screaming performance and an innovative new thermal design, GeForce GTX 580 rips through the latest games while running quieter than the previous generation. GeForce GTX 580 – don't play DX11 without it.

i thought: what arrogant B-starts you are, thinking that, once you have one inch of advance, to write such self glorifying things about your own products. (mumble mumble, grunch)

all four cards, 570/580 and 6990/6970 gave me what i needed, and i was even ready to shove out 500 balls for a 580

So, in the end, the ATI card
-with 2 GB instead of 1,5, (+33%),
-a longstanding "habit" of using their cards,
-Nvidia shooting themselves in the foot with such a "we are the roxxorx" statement

have made up my mind.

Again, like with single engine fighters: there is no "one best" card out there. Its an ongoing war/race, and the Card does not matter. The Pilot does.

Hi 110

This is what I would  call a perfect approach of the problem, and the kind I am trying to adopt. The problem is "How far can we trust all these tests " and how "objective" are they ?. I never see a test taking  simulators into account ( FSX-Il2 - DCS-WARTHOG )

I only was a ATI customer before.I had a Saphire ( what type I can't remember ) that crashed after 2 years of loyal service.( I thought it was a kind of a short life for a top card  at the time ) so I decided to go NVIDIA and since then I 've been running an AGP 7800GS without a glitch !.I think that she now deserves a good retirement !.I always remember  my ATIs cards as giving better colours ... but this is simply my opinion.

What bothers me more is ATI with Il2 and Open GL.
COD has gone directX but I do not intend to buy it before 6 months.. ( You know the bugs...).

Can you tell me your experience with your new ATI 6970 and Il2" Perfect Mode" and... water .
Do you run other sims ?

Thanks a lot
Madcop ;)
