Yes, and so nearly didnt get past the development stage- so many early versions crashed mysteriously- some due to the tail coming away in dives, others due to the pilot being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from the 24 cylinder Naper Sabre engine. So serious was this problem, it was a rule that all pilots should wear their oxygen masks at all times. But confidence in the Typhoon was vindicated as the aircraft eventually became the RAF's most successful ground-attack aircraft during 1944-5.

It was Roland Beaumont who, whilst squadron commander for 609 Sqn, was responsible for persuading the air ministry to persevere with the Typhoon- there were many ready to scrap it, but Beaumont had been a test pilot for Hawker and believed in its potential. He subsequently was responsible for bringing the Tempest into RAF service, forming 150 Tempest Wing. If you read his biography, he was 'quite a guy'!

Not really, I just didn't realize that by showing that an upgrade was under way a bunch of extra requests would likely to happen  

I am not as patient as I used to be, so I better took it off before getting a wishlist.

I appreciate the will to help, but unless you have a VERY rare photo showing something special, I think I have covered it all.

(I did know that webpage as well, hehe   I took a look at the Tempests while researching the Typhoon)
