For those map-savvy people out there:
I am working on a Yap-Ulithi Lagoon Map and I keep having this problem that the following pictures illustrate. I can't get the shallow water and reefs to appear as i drew them in GIMP when I load the map in-game.
Here is the Google Earth image of Yap:

I make the map_c with shallow areas like here:
Then I load the map and the shallow areas have the big missing rectangles in them as seen here:

I don't know why this is happening, but in the console I keep getting the error "Bad water if mapRID = 0" This apparently has something to do with not having a corresponding map_R.tga. I currently don't have a map_R.tga for the map and I don't know what it does or how to make one. Does map_R have anything to do with the shallow water problem I'm having? If not, why is IL-2 making me so angry?!?!?!

Sorry dont know much about your problem but when you get it right let me know and I'll try to get a better texture than the rocky floor texture of mine you have in there now. Maybe something closer to the first image you posted. A bit more sand and vegitation. :)
-
thank you for the offer. I will probably take you up on that one. But for now, I need to solve the messed up reefs.
-
Wrong painting technic i guess. I got it too when i started Palau's coral sectors.
Can you post you map_t too please here?

Paint value for the shallow water texture on your map_t in exact areas where is your shallow water on map_c.

Yep that's it. Listen master Avala. I learned all from him for Palau map ;)

Thank you guys! Your tips helped me and now Yap is looking pretty good. Texturing still needs to be done, but I like the reefs. Bombsaway if you would like to make a sexy looking reef texture that's better than the one I got, I would greatly appreciate it.

You got it. :) Beautiful work. 8) Check your pm.

Just an idea....why don't you use Palau's wood texture, the one without roads. It could fit well with map. Good luck.

I hit another roadblock. After finishing the reefs around Yap, I moved on to the reefs around Ulithi, Sorol, Woleai, Faraulep, and Ifalik Atolls. When I was finished with the reefs in mymap_c.tga, I used the map_c toolbox to create a new map_c and map_c table. Then I created a new map_t from the updated mymap_c. Then when I load in game, Il-2 has a CTD in the middle of loading in the Map Builder.

Dave, Check your pm's. :)

Hi Dave,
Agracier was kind enough to give me a method of making reefs in my map_c ;D
He uses Paint Shop Pro 7 for this method.
For a picture have a look in Bombsaways new reef texture.
The one that has more sand and seaweed. :D
There's a picture of a reef that I made with a harvard in it.
I'll dig up that method for you when I get home from work.
Cheers Kirby

I think i figured out the problem but i've had no time to update you guys because i've been busy with a lot of things. the problem was that when i used the "blur" tool, i was accidentally making the value of reef areas outside the normal land areas above RGB 127, causing a mismatch with the map_h and thus the crash when i attempted to load the map. if someone knows a way to make areas outside the original land areas (at or above RGB 127) stay below 127, that would be a quick and easy way to solve the map_c problem. so far i've been working on it and just being careful to not go past 127 when working on blurring the reefs and land.

UPDATE 11/9/10
Owing to a less-busy week, I've had time to finish a lot of the reefs and textures. Here are some new screenshots:

Dave, i think this entire thread should be moved to the map section - it's a bit out of place having what is essentially a WIP thread in tech help.
what'ya say, should i move for you? :)

Yeah I was beginning to think the same same thing. Feel free to re-title it too. Thanks man.
