Yak-3Km (marine)

This is a fictional plane, a navalized Yak-3 with hardpoints under the wings.
This is based off the Yak-3K mod from Aviaskins (Blitz), but with a few differences:

1) The canopy opens from the outside view (inside view will come later we hope)
2) The Slot is renamed to avoid confusion with the REAL Yak-3K, which were test planes for nose cannons.
3) The weapons loadout options of the 3K mod is reduced to more realistic versions.
4) The Gun armament is changed to be similar to Yak-3.

This mod uses the  Yak-3K body mesh, so you may have both versions in your game if you like, using the same body file.

This mod uses the Yak3K FM, included in SAS Buttons v1.0 and later. It is identical to Yak-3 FM, but a little heavier.

While it IS a fantasy plane, it's not as far-fetched as it sounds. The Soviets had the "Graf Zeppelin" in their possession and although she most probably would have required a LOT of work, they could theoretically have repaired/completed her- Stalin was determined to build a navy with modern battleships and a carrier would have been a useful companion. Instead of completing "Graf Zeppelin", however, the Soviets used her as a target and sank her, as they did with the Panzerschiff "Lützow" which had been scuttled off Swinemünde. Stalin's post-war battlefleet plans were ultimately cancelled under Krushchev.
The main difficulty in repairing "Graf Zeppelin" would have been in obtaining spare parts for her as most of her equipment had been made in the Western occupation zones of Germany; quite apart from the disruption of Germany's industry, the Western Powers were hardly likely to allow the Soviets to order the necessary bits and pieces as relations between the former allies had soured and a Soviet carrier would hardly have been in the West's interests.

"Graf Zeppelin" is at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, she was discovered by a Polish diving outfit fairly recently. The Germans scuttled her at Stettin on 25/4/45, the Soviets managed to refloat her in March 1946 and towed her to Swinemünde, finally using her for target practice in 1947. Presumably her damage level was beyond the Soviets' capability to repair.

I downloaded the original Russian mod from Aviaskins when it was released and it's fun- so is this one!
After thinking a bit more about its historical possibility, my guess is that the Soviets would more probably have used a navailzed Yak-9U variant than a Yak-3; the "U" stands for "Ulisennui" or "strengthened", the (9Us had strengthened airframes (the classicists among us will discern "Ulysses" in "Ulisennui") which would have been more suited to the batterings of deck landings...... if they used a Yak at all. They may well have copied the USN's policy of using radial-engined planes, which would have given a navalized La-7. Or they may even have skipped the piston-engined fighters and started with jets straight away. Navalized Yak-15, anybody? For torpedo bombers, add IL-10 with torpedo armament which leaves the Soviet naval dive bomber slot vacant.
Now, where's the Graf Zeppelin model for IL2?????????

By the way, where did you get that skin with naval ensign on the fuselage?
Title: Re: Yak-3Km Russian Naval Fighter

The skin was from the mod originally. I agree with you on the 9U, AND the La7 and IL10 also. But I think this mod was from the beginning more a "lets try it" mod than a serious attempt at making a possible history.

However, if I was to let MY fatasy go, I would say forget 1946. What if that idiot Neville Chamberlain offered to sell a British Carrier to Stalin as an enticement to not sign a non agression pack with Hitler. This gives USSR a Carrier to escort thenorthern convoys as early as 1941, which would probably initially be equipped with Seahurricanes and Swordfish, until the Navalized Yak7's and later 9s, IL2's and Su2 and stuff could get produced.

At first they would probably have navalised the I-151 as a stopgap to help attrition, as well as a U2 utility plane, and later after Stalin throws his famous wing glue hissy fit at Yakolev, a Naval La5.

Is someone else thinking that this would make one awesome campaign?

If someone Get me a Royal Navy Carrier with new slot and skin (and creative name ...the Lenin!?!) I think I might do the pack.

We will need cool naval skins for all the above too.

Original Yak-3M ("Morskoj"="Naval") was created by its author under impression of Sergei Anisimov's book "Variant bis" (alternate history genre). According the book at autumn 1944 soviet navy had a single light aircraft carrier "Tchapayev" build from light cruiser's hull (like Independence-class). Its main purpose was providing of air cover for strike force consisted also of two heavy surface ships in the Atlantic. That because "Tchapayev" carried 32 Yak-3 and Yak-9D interceptors, 5 Yak-9DD fighter-reconnaisance planes, 8 Sukhoi dive-bombers (an improved version of Su-2) and no torpedo bombers.

For a name, "Valery Chkalov" (a famous 1930s Soviet aviator) might be appropriate for a Soviet carrier. As for a possible carrier bribe for Stalin in 1939, he would have been more interested in a KGV, I think. Even after WW2 had decisively proved that the carrier was the new Queen of the Seas and that battleships had gone the way of the dodo, Stalin insisted on battleships for the Soviet Navy. And the only modern carrier the RN had at that time was "Ark Royal"; somehow I can hardly imagine the Sea Lords agreeing to such a transfer, they would probably have resigned in toto- and probably the First Lord as well.

Re Yak-3M(orskoi), or perhaps Yak-3F(lot), that sounds like a more realistic designation than Yak-3Km.

Well, Then the Americans could offer it! Its all fictional anyway,As you see even the 3M is based on a book (Great Info Narvik, thanx)

I do think the Su2 would be a cool naval plane!

Its all fun. Its all good.

Well, the "U" actually stands for "??????????" - meaning "improved" in English, not strenghtened and I don't think it has anything to do with Ulysses. ;)

The plane looks great, Russian/Soviet navy planes always had great design and nice paint schemes.

Talking about fixes, this mod doesn't work too well for me. I get the plane and it flies okay, but none of the stores show up or operate. It is actually just the Yak3K duplicated. So far my virtual Russian Navy haven't been able to make the darn thing work properly. Sigh...

so far it work's great, and i love it, please do more, but one request for this, can you make the hook extend farther? I spent somthng like an hour trying trap, went bolter every time except the last where I trapped with a prop strike.

More late model Yak-7 or 9s would be awesome to mod for carrier operations, perhaps a late war La-7 as well?
As far as bombers go, already the T model Il-2 in game, could be adapted maybe for the carrier use, Su-2 for dive bombers? A navalized Il-10 could start the basis for an add on of the in game Il-10 campaign (which personally I found a tiny bit lacking when it moved over to Manchuria....hardly any resistance at all from the Japanese)

For early war years, navalized I-153 or I-15?

With all of this, a Russian A/C would be nice to have in game....perhaps based on the Illustrious or Graf Zeppelin?

Gerrit, didn't the RN have several modern carriers employed in the Indian Ocean and in the Okinawa campaign in 1945? What if Clement Atlee decided to give the USSR a surplus RN carrier along with the nice Rolls Royce jet engine he gave - that actually ended up being the basis of the Soviet jet fighter industry??!!

In any event, the Yak could get airborne off an escort carrier and there were many, many of those around in 45-46.

On subject of fictional navalized, and appropriate for 46.....mig9, he 280 or me 262 ( whichever had better low speed handling) or he 162......better yet a naval go229 ;)

Phoenix9491, here is the wrong place to post requests, wishes etc. So, why not making proper requests for the planes you have in mind as naval variants in the request section?  :)
