=====================================================================================================================
Greetings again, my dears!
It's been yet another hot minute since I last came forth with an update on my audio work. Thankfully, quarantine and staying at home have given me the time and essentials to keep my creative gears rolling. After a month and a half, I am extremely happy to report VSM 7.3 is complete!
Designed with WW2 era modpacks specifically in mind, I cranked out an overhaul to the engaging aural experience for anyone looking to improve IL-2's soundscape. This time around, newer and more refined engine audio samples have been put into the framework of the mod. Having gathered bites from countless airshow videos and online sound sources, as well as assets from audio gods like Jafa and Tiger33, I've provided myself the nuts and bolts to give my mod a new breath of fresh air.
The result is a complete set of replacement engine sounds that will put any of the stock sounds to shame. You really must hear the new DB 600, BMW 801, Merlin, and Allison sounds - They are music for the ears! Don't forget the thunderous roar of US Radial engines - These will power through the skies with brute force! The Russian and Japanese piston engines have that familiar cool growl from the previous releases, but have been further refined and tweaked for greater flavor to your auditory senses! As for any familiar sounding engine sets, they too have been retouched in ways that bring out a greater taste!
All in all, the engine sounds in this version have been heavily polished and balanced to provide the best sound immersion possible, and I think you will enjoy them. Dare I say, I managed to make this mod even MORE fly-by worthy, without any classfile trickery of any sort! And as per tradition of SAS modding, all sounds are sampled at 22 kHz in Mono, for efficient operation and downloading!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the advent of it's own new buttons file and tools (courtesy of FL2070), I have made an even wider array of engine sounds to ensure diversity among IL-2's sound sets in the FMD and EMD files! Now with VSM 7.3 you'll get to hear more unique and distinctive engines at work, boasting a number 32 new audio presets! To get an idea of the variety you can expect, here's a list of aircraft families ( to name a few ;) ) you should consider trying out now:
- DBM-3
- Mig 3
- PBY Catalina
- Bristol Blenheim
- Gloster Gladiator
- DeHavilland Mosquito
- Avro Lancaster
- Fokker DX
- Ki-45
- G4M
- BF109C and D
- BF110s
- Junkers-52
- Ju88
- He-111
- P-39 and P-63
- Hawk 75 and P-36
- R-5
- I16
- MC202
- Ki-46
- MS406
- D3A1
- B5N
- B-17 and B-24
- C-47 and DC-3
- F4U Corsair
- TBF/M Avenger
- Hawker Hurricane
- SBD Dauntless
- F2A2 Buffalo
- P-26
- Ki-27
- A5M4
- CW-21
- Lockheed Electra
- Ilyusin IL-2
- Peshka Pe-2-8
- and more...
Trust me, this is only a little list I could think of. You have to try and discover the rest on your own! Try out ALL the aircraft on your roster! I swear, you can make a virtual airshow with this stuff. You won't be let down ~ ^^
This buttons version has been tried and tested in BAT - World at War, and VP ModPack. Works in both of them! Keep in mind though, this version was made to work in 4.12 modded installations so that it plays friendly with your default buttons file. To that end, I'm sharing two versions for simplicity's sake:
- One WITH buttons for VP ModPack and BAT-WaW
- One WITHOUT buttons for general compatibility with other modpacks, or just other IL-2 versions besides 4.12
( Both versions will still carry the complete and new sound sets I've put it, just in case people wanna use or listen to the samples. )

Missing J-42 sound samples
No sound when my F80 is flying
-
You sure?
I could work on a fix for that, though some jet presets are glitchy in their classfiles or code.
Some P-80 fighters have their corresponding working presets, while some of them use an older, more outdated sound format in IL-2's code.
-
Can confirm VSM7 contains only one J42 sample:
(https://i.postimg.cc/rFYCjfTJ/image.png) (https://postimages.org/)
Fix is to copy samples from VSM6 JTW.
-
Thanks for the heads-up.
I'll work on a proper fix for that.
In the meantime, copy and paste the J42 samples from VSM6 in the JTW version. That should work.
-
great work first of all!
do you know if it is ok to take out that huge sound sfs file from the BAT03B folder if I copy in your new VSM 7.0 directly into the sounds folder in the modules folders?
-
Thanks!
Hold your horses now! I never said anything about deleting any SFS files. XD
Besides, this version of my sound mod is only for WW2 eras. So naturally this goes into your #WAW3 folder.
-
thats for sure :)
I was just asking if you know if its okay to delete the sounds sfs as your mod is now native to BAT...
for the time, i keep the sfs and the new 7.0 mod in my install :)
-
Hello, I downloaded and installed your mod after watching videos on YouTube. I am currently with the BAT 3.8 mod in version 4.12.2. However, all the machine gun sounds I hear after installing your mod correspond to those in CFS3 and they are absolutely awful and not what I saw on YouTube. Can you help me please?
https://youtu.be/QkF7UcB-kT4
Here is the video I saw about your mod and the sound of the shots does not match what I have. Thank you for your help
-
That's strange, since I used my own custom gun sounds for many of the weapons you hear in VSM since the 5.0 versions and onwards. Though I did use some CFS3 gun sounds as a starting point back when I first created VSM 3 years ago or so.
Are you sure you're not using any other conflicting audio packs? I can assure you clear as day that my MG sounds are tested and work without issue.
-
I believe you, to my knowledge I only use your mod however the rendering that I have does not correspond in anything to what I could see on this video. I installed your mod as you explained and in JSGME it is the only mod to activate. I tried to find where could be wrong but I do not see since it is the only mod I have installed since I BAT. However, I noticed that I had SAS Engine mod installed by default and that there were sound files, can this be a problem with your mod ?
-
Well, my sound mod doesn't carry not use any classfiles at all. I don't know how you're handling your BAT installation so I can't purely know what seems to be the issue on your end.
-
It is very mysterious all that .... I installed BAT and the various updates on a clean installation of IL-2 without encountering errors during the installation. Well, I would continue with these sounds too bad even if I assure you that they are horrible compare to what you do. thanks anyway :)
-
Good morning, sir,
Great! I love what you're doing, but I'll have a question, not a criticism. Shouldn't the sound that pilots hear be attenuated by the headphones and earphones and in the case of WW2 pilots, by the leather of the headphones. I've watched a lot of videos, flying in the cockpit, open and closed, but I haven't had the chance yet to hear the difference in sound with or without headphones.
Of course hearing a nice engine noise is nice and pleasant, but I'm not sure the pilots would have liked to put up with that during the whole flight, which sometimes could last a long time.
So there should normally be a new type of sound, with or without headphones in addition to the open or closed cockpit or outside view. As well as for the voices through the headphones which should be better perceptible, the engine sound being muffled by the headphones.
Again, no criticism, but a simple question in order to perfect the immersion.
Thank you again for your work.

Hello, I finally managed to activate your mod and I must tell you, hat for your job! The game has entered a new dimension, I love it!
However, I encounter only one problem: during machine guns on the ground, the game freezes for 2-3 then after it comes back, and it does so on each pass as well as during normal flight.
I have an MSI GL72 laptop with 8GB of RAM, 2.60GHz Intel Core I7 processor, Nvidia GTX950M graphics card. What setting would allow me to reduce / fix this problem?
-
Still busy as usual!
Expect the 7.2 update in a week or so! ;)
-
Thank you. All the sound upgrades are first class. Unexpected was the new tyre squeek upon landing, nicely done, and the irrelevant 'boom' sound at the start of a new mission is gone too.
Something I don't understand about the updates; I have no VSM folder after the patch install, so I installed the previous update to this one using the same path as the main patch. It seems to work correctly, and I do have a back up of the BAT sounds folder, so if you could point out what I may have done wrong, I can easily re-install the whole lot.
-
Thanks again Victor!!!
-
W.M., you must install base VSM7 from first post to get VSM folder.
Example from by BAT 3.8.3 #WAW3 folder:
-
I thank you for the the trouble you went to on my behalf. And to be sure, I just checked the #WAW3 folder again just prior to this post and let me say again with absolute certainty, there is no VSM folder.
I did install the base VSM as per the first post, and the mod works! Right from the opening screen during load up, the sounds of F4F's sitting on the carrier deck, right down to the skid noises on landing at the end of a mission.
It does make me wonder whether the first update patch worked at all given the situation.
All I can do I suppose is replace the #WAW3 folder with the back up and repeat the whole process.
Thanks again for trying
-
Are you sure you're not muddling something up?
-
Is there a 44 kHz version?
-
VSM has been 22khz from the start - sadly, there is no 44khz version.
-
I've always personally stuck with 22hz for better filesize, while still delivering quality audio.
On top of that, this sampling rate gives IL-2 better performance and breathing room when processing LOTS of sounds going off at once, like large air battles for instance.
-
great sound mod, but I get a lot of "cannot load sample: null" errors when I use it instead of the integrated sfs sound from BAT....
-
Hallo,
Thanks for this Mod and thanks for the and the continuation of mods. :-*
I have been playing the game since 2001 when I was still at school...Hard to believe...how good a game can be.
But I haven't found one thing yet.
Is it possible to get 12mm & 7mm hitsmokes in version 4.10 ?
My Il2 is so big that it would fill up an old hard drive, and I cannot update it to version 4.12 because it crashes.
it is impossible to find the cause here, but I would like to have the smoke effects.
Thank you
-
I was having something of a problem, just like lufwaffe8523...actually, i DID have some custom sounds installed. I disabled them and now i'm crying with joy! Your sound mod is GREAT! Thank you so much! If i wanted to try and fiddle about with wind sound, which file should i pick out? I'd like to hear them louder and at slower speeds (after all if you take a ride on a bike you usually already hear a nice wind roar while as slow as 100 kmh!)
Anyway: thank you again, great job and new life to our game!
Riccardo
-
Find the sections in presets/aircraft.common.prs called [sample.wind_(...).speed]. Files called wind_rear_(...).wav refer to open cockpit wind, and wind_int1.wav is the closed cockpit wind. In the [(...).speed] sections, find the minlo, minhi, and value entries. The minlo entry is the onset of the wind in knots, and the minhi is the speed at which it is heard at full volume. You can make the wind louder by increasing the value.
Example in current VSM7:
[sample.wind_int1.wav.speed]
minlo 25
minhi 135
maxlo 600
maxhi 600
value 2.0
pmin 0.8
pmax 1.5
This is the same section, but with the values changed to make the wind heard louder and at lower speeds:
[sample.wind_int1.wav.speed]
minlo 15
minhi 110
maxlo 600
maxhi 600
value 3.0
pmin 0.8
pmax 1.5

Of course i forgot to thank you too for this fantastic mod! And for your quick reply! Off topic: i always follow your feats in Fishyy's video!! ;D
All the best!

Hey y'all! Quick update:)
Thanks to the generous help of FL2070 and some technical wizardry, VSM 7.3 will feature it's own new buttons file with enhaced FMD and EMD sound features.
This will ensure a far greater diversity of engine audio for these WW2 birds! However, this buttons file will work best with 4.12 modded installations.
That is all for now. I'll see you in the skies sometime soon! ^_^
-
I've been hard at work on VSM 7.3, so apologies for having gone quiet for a while.
The new version will carry it's own buttons file for the WAW module in BAT (it's also been tested in VP ModPack and it works there too). Don't worry, this won't affect flight model and engine performance. Just the sounds. ;) It's always been the sounds. I won't reveal too much, but I have a feeling you'll enjoy the engine sound diversity once it's released. ^ ^
I will still make another version of 7.3, but without the buttons file. This should ensure general compatibility with modpacks like UP, DBW, and HSFX, etc.

Thank you for a great job! The effect is excellent as usual.
I'm using the 4.13.4 version of the game with the buttons file from mod activator 6.4 with small updates needed for some mods. Can you specify - which emd files you modified in your buttons - I would add to mine.
-
Sent you a PM.
-
Splendid job Victor! Many thanks.
-
Anytime! ^^
-
that sounds are just insane! after first optimizing the sound in the game (enabling EAX following a mod and guide found here) and then adding the first rendition of the sound matrix unlocker together with the previous version of VSM, this new version is just - well, insane! the sound when using proper earphones (plugged in my Sennheiser earphones) while doing carrier circuits in those big radial powered Grummans and Voughts is music in my ears!
that new version of VSM MUST GO into the next BAT patch!!!!
thanks a lot for compiling it and doing all this work!!!!
ps.: I have one question though: the buttons file in your mod is way smaller than the one I am using which came with the soundmatrix unlocker-which one is the better to use?
the one from the unlocker does work properly with your mod it seems, no troubles on P&W and Merlin and Allison engines... ;)
-
Thank you so much!! ^_^ Happy you enjoy it!
I pretty much used the exact same buttons file from the Sound Matrix Unlocker, and modified it from there to use more sound Presets to work with. Even while packing and unpacking the file to test ingame, the size kept fluctuating. Nothing went wrong and all works fine, though it was weird to see.
Still, my buttons file for VSM 7.3 contains far more engine sound diversity, which I'm pretty sure is going to make WW2 aviation fans and audiophiles very happy.
-
Evening All.
So was wondering if I could have a little help here, I installed VSM 6.0 (base pack) then all the way to VSM 7.3
Unzip, drag and drop, overwrite as required but.... nothing... sounds dont match the ones from the samples unzipped from the downloaded folder.
I dont know if there is anything to be changed in confi to activate the mod?
I have done it through JSGME, paced directly, everything but nothing seems to be working.
Running latest BAT installation with Pegasus.
Thanks in advance!
-
Ah so your buttons contain the same stuff and more compare to the unlocker one?
Good to know, will test it tomorrow then :)
-
VSM7.3 vs. BAT SoundMatrix Unlocker
VSM7.3 was made by Victor with a custom buttons to expand the variety of engine presets available to a further extent than has ever before without presets from the the my_presets folder (in which presets can be made per-engine, i.e. different sound for each of DB605A, AS, AM, ASM, B, D, D with C3, etc). There are many presets which have never existed before, and sample sets for the new presets Victor created. VSM 7.3 does not modify the gun sound matrix.
BAT SoundMatrix Unlocker, on the other hand, doesn't do anything "new"—it allows modders to use varied engine and gun presets as were used before but were since deprecated. For example, motors like the R1820 (and its heavy bomber variant), the DB700, etc, all have their own presets. It also separates guns of similar parameters to their own individual presets named like the ones used in UP3's gun classes.
This means that while the VSM7.3 buttons is more varied than the BSMU buttons, its new soundmatrix is not compatible with other sound mods, unlike the BSMU.
-
This is a far more detailed explanation. Thank you.
Also @Griffon_301, don't forget that my buttons version works best with VP Modpack and BAT's World at War module (#WAW3)...
-
Unpacking my 7.3 download (4.12 Buttons) in 7Z returned a 1 :Data Error! ?? It appears to have unpacked ok after cancelling 7Z through task manager tho? Win10
The button file crashes my CUP #WAW 4.12.2m install (something about a FM_156 button problem) - if disabled ok!
Are both downloads essentially the same except for the 'gui/buttons' folder?
-
Dude, this buttons version is for BAT #WAW3.
You'll have to download the non-buttons version to work with your CUP installation
-
Hmm download page defo states 7.3 button version for 4.12 mod installations?
-
True, but make sure you're not using any other sound mods, or even older versions of VSM.
-
No worries just a wee bit of confusion on my part - great sounds dude!
-
I'm having a seniors moment :-[ In a BAT installation, do I place the complete folder ! VSM Sound Mod v7.3 into the #WAW3 folder. Does the buttons file in the included gui folder thus take precedence over the buttons file in STD>gui folder?
Also, in my VPMod installation, do I place the complete folder ! VSM Sound Mod v7.3 into the #SAS folder?
Cheers
-
Yes to both of these! ^^
Just drop it into #WAW3 and bam! Done!
My modified buttons file is based on BAT - WAW's default buttons file, so it will take precedence, but I can assure you it's safely compatible. :)
And yes, drop it into #SAS and boom! Done! The buttons file version also works safely here in VP.
Hope this helps ~ ^^
-
Thanks for getting back to me. All done, and the sounds are bloody fantastic - love the Wildcat! Congratulations on a great mod.
Cheers
-
Hello guys.
Does this mod work on the vanilla v4.14m patch? And how i´ve got to install this one correctly?
greetings from Germany
-
Thanks for the great sounds! :)
-
Request for making rocket shooting sound much louder, thanks. Or is it any idea to make it louder manually?
-
To all VSM 7.3 (Buttons) users, I should probably warn you that my sound mod MIGHT not be compatible with other sound mods, like Tiger's flybys for instance.
Reason for warning this is because both mods carry their own modified buttons file. Tiger's works in that it incorporates flyby audio functions for IL-2 1946, meanwhile mine works at adding more WW2 aircraft engine sound variety to the game's roster.
Conflict with both buttons files might crash your game.
-
Thank you Victor! Awesome work.
-
How do you install this mod in some simple steps? I'm quite new to modding here in 1946, and I need some help.
-
Move the "! VSM Sound Mod v7.3" to your active mods folder. The mods folder will be called #SAS, or #WAW3, or something else like that (always has a hashtag as its first character). and resides in your main game folder, the folder with il2fb.exe in it.
If you don't have that folder, you need a modpack (like BAT or VPmod) OR a modactivator first. If you don't have a modact or modpack, you should ask for help in the New Member Safety Area (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,204.0.html).
-
Ah, thanks FL2070. I'll make sure to get VP.
-
Hi there, Ive been trying to install this mod but Im having issues. I downloaded the No buttons 7.3 version for my VP modpack IL2 on version 4.12.2m. I only have this mod however Im unsure which place to put the VSM Folder, Ive tried in SAS and it doesnt work and no luck in putting the samples and presets in their own "my_presets" and "my_samples" folder. Do I need to disable the Jivers sound mod included in VP modpack for this to work? Or do I need to install something else like a base mod?
Any help is much appreciated, its been doing my head in as I've been struggling with this for the past few hours.
Thanks
-
Ive tried in SAS and it doesnt work
You had the right idea—the #SAS folder is indeed the right folder. If you've put VSM there and still see no difference, then you the issue could be:
(1) You have directly put the presets and samples folders into the #SAS folder
(2) You have inserted VSM into the #SAS folder under a subfolder, like this: #SAS/
VSM/
VSM/
presets/
samples/
instead of how it should be, which is like this: #SAS/
VSM/
presets/
samples/
(3) The loading priority of VSM is lower than that of the other sound mod which was put in by vpmedia.
Check to make sure that the folder structure is correct, and if it is, then the problem is loading priority. You should increase the loading priority of VSM so that it loads above all other mods. Read about loading priority here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,65812.msg721162.html#msg721162).
Hope you can solve your problem :)
-
Hey, I apprectiate your help. I've tried doing what you said with putting the VSM into the #SAS folder directly and still no luck. The VSM is at the top of the folder list within #SAS so it should have priority, which is strange that it wont work. I still have the folders my_presets and my_samples in main il2 folder directory filled with the contents of the VSM aswell, as told by someone else that was all i needed to do. Should I take these out and only have it in #SAS, rather than both?
I've been referencing this persons video for what the sounds should sound like in mine, and I cannot get the same as his for some reaosn (specifically the flyby sounds he has), unless that isnt the sounds of this mod, rather something hes added in after?
https://youtu.be/jRQ82XRjQjs?t=330
I have attached screenshots of the folder structure.
Thanks

According to those screenshots, you have done everything right. There is absolutely nothing I can think of that would prevent VSM from working properly with the setup you have.
As for steven197106's flyby sounds, he gets those from a different sound mod (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3258.0.html) which uses scripted flyby sounds.
-
Ah I see, this is what I was afraid would be the case, that I was actually getting the correct sounds and the fly by sounds etc are from something different ::( So it must work then, and I was fixing something that was never broken hahaha o_O
Thanks for your help anyway,
Jazz
-
Saw this upload and immediately knew I was going to download before reading anything. Never clicked a download button so fast.
By far the best sounds ever made for this game.
-
At low speeds, the damaged engine sound is played, irrespective of engine condition.
I recorded a video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4QLSr_7I3g
BAT 4.1.2 - VSM 7.3
I tested both the buttons and no buttons versions, behavior is the same.
Absolutely terrific work btw.
You've improved on what was already a very impressive sound mod.
-
Thank you kindly! ^ ^
As for the engine sputtering sounds, there are two types:
-Damage backfires
-Low speed coughs
This low speed cough was my attempt to replicate how inline prop planes make pops and bangs when reducing throttle while landing, however I knew something was missing from the motor presets using this sound.
Not to worry though, as I fixed this little issue by adding the missing sound control to the presets. That way your plane won't make sputtering sounds while flying at low speeds with the throttle at max, or when gliding slow with the engine off.
I'll make sure to upload this fix sometime soon, and thank you for the feedback. :)
-
=GO TO FIRST POST=
Both download links have been updated with a fix for inline prop sounds when they slow down to land. Now you can hear your Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitts, Mustangs, etc sputter while spooling down and descending for the runway.
Thanks to @TheOligopolist for pointing out!
-
Thanks a lot! Nice to see the mod is still being developed and improved.
Is it possible to release a package only with files that have been modified? Looking at the mod's structure, it shouldn't be a problem.
-
True, but for now I'm sorta' focusing on updating the full package rather than separate little patches. That way everyone is up to date with this mod each time they download it.

Great stuff. Very nice touch.

doesnt seem to be working with BAT v 4 "Red Core" :(
-
Im ditto with kelso about a separate download for the 'fixes' but if theres a version 7.4 on the horizon I will wait for that victor - with great anticipation :-)
-
Hello victor, your mod is very good ,I have bat, and the sound of the engines is amazing, but the sound of the weapons remains the same, is it a mod only for engines or should I change the sound of the weapons too?
-
Hello victor, your mod is very good ,I have bat, and the sound of the engines is amazing, but the sound of the weapons remains the same, is it a mod only for engines or should I change the sound of the weapons too?
No, VSM has weapons sounds as well. It's that VSM comes included with BAT, so, by installing VSM, you're essentially replacing the sounds of BAT with the sounds that are already there. The engine sound difference is only because Victor put in special code in a version of VSM that BAT doesn't use (which is also apparently the one you downloaded), and this special code adds more variety to engine sounds. If you're looking for more options for weapons sounds, check the Sounds (Arms) (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,96.0.html) section.

The download doesnt state its already in BAT? I musta missed something? Will now disable VSM in my JSGME

It's still worth installing VSM 7.3 buttons edition—it has features that BAT's version of VSM doesn't have (the more various engine sounds).

Great sounds! One thing though, the Texan sound lacks a deeper drony base sound I remember from when they flew here in Sweden decades ago. They were called Sk16 in the swedish air force and were used as trainers, hacks and liason aircrafts for a long time here. Otherwise the sounds are top notch to my ears!

Thank you so much, H! ^_^
I'll try replicating those details in my upcoming update for VSM 7. :)

Hello
I’m using VP mod pack, I would like to victors sound mod the video clips look amazing
Do you need to load earlier versions first or can you go straight with 7.3.
-
No early versions are required for v7.3 to work.

Thank you Victor

I found this mod and I think it is superb! But, it doesn't want to work.... I still hear sounds from basic BAT 4.2.1 with modact 5.3.
But, when I choose stock game version, everything is hearable clearly.
All files are paste in #WAW folder and used by JSGME. Of course, I downloaded with buttons version of mod.
Anyone know the problem, please?

That's because VSM--or, at least, an older version of it, 6.0 I think--is the sound mod which is used by BAT. Some things have changed since 6.0, and some things haven't, and those things that haven't are probably the "sounds from basic BAT 4.2.1" that you're hearing. The mod is most likely working fine.

So, It is as I suspect.
Is there anything I can do to make It work?

What?
I pasted the ! VSM Sound Mod v7.3 folder into all the era folders separately (i have all modules)
It has nothing to do with jsgme
