Title: Customizing BAT loading screens and backgrounds - general thread
Post by: SAS~vampire_pilot on February 17, 2020, 10:57:03 AM
Since the invention of BAT there have been a couple of BATMODS sets with variations of loading screens and backgrounds included for the various era modules

In the past there have been questions about how to customize your own BAT backgrounds and here's a thread where all of this can be discussed and where everyone can share new sets.

A few words to introduce what's happening in BAT here: First of all, each BAT era module has their own set of backdrops. So you can address each era module individually in BATMODS.

The path where these graphics go is:
\#[...]3\STD\gui        (#[...]3 being #WAW3, #JTW3, etc.)

The files are limited by the game and are named:
background0.tga to background14.tga  for randomized launch screens
wide_gui_background_de.tga, wide_gui_background_en.tga, wide_gui_background_jp.tga, wide_gui_background_ru.tga  for randomized in-game GUI backdrops

These names are hardcoded and you cannot simply extend these listings.

Quote
note: these do not affect the Country backdrops which are set in the Country folders:
C:\IL-2 Sturmovik BAT\Missions\Campaign\DE  (DE, US, RG, GB....)

These files can be set individually and must be named either wide_background.tga  or  background.tga   - this varies and you must find out yourself in a particular case. These files usually must be square to my knowledge, like 900x900 and you must compensate for wide screen by deformation. Also they must be 256 colors (8 bit) only for all I know.

These are the basics. With this and with studying the examples already available in BATMODS, you can easily create your own custom BAT backgrounds.

To get things started, I have done a boring plain brushed steel backdrop set that does not change. You will always have this, be it startup or GUI backdrop (again: NOT in the individual country folders for campaigns and missions!)

Neutral Steel Backdrop for #DOF3, #TGA3, #WAW3, #JTW3

Not sure about bats but some cats eat dogs for breakfast, seven of them at once.

Hello! It's simple, you download the package from this link:  http://www.mediafire.com/file/brqnhfwigb60jnj/%2523BAT_%2523CAT_Loading_screens.7z/file
And unpack the into the BATMODS folder at the root of your BAT installation with a replacement. Then just turn it on in the manager JSGME ;)

Hello Vampire!
For some reason, the old screensavers are constantly working, although I turn on the new ones. I tried to find them among the files, but I could not find them .. Probably they are hardwired into "sfs" somewhere.
The screenshot shows one of them ..
new screensavers work, but not always
I have a new BAT installation, 4.12.2 + 4.0 + 4.1 ..
I don't know how to fix it  ]dontknow[

I do not understand what you mean.
All you have to do is replace the .tga files of any of my packages with whatever you want, enable with JSGME and then they will show in random selection. You cannot add additional numbers. The files must be in the correct format.

End of story, there is no magic or hidden sfs content involved.

The picture you show is not part of BAT (looks like a VP Modpack picture?)

No, no, I have a clean installation of BAT, and I have not had a VP for a long time, very strange, except for a random skyes I have nothing, not counting a couple of planes, and also flags of countries.
I had these screensavers in the previous BAT,
Well, if you say that these are definitely screensavers not from BAT, then it means that somewhere I added them somehow. Strange, I will search)

Definitely not the current default BAT
There also is no BAT emblem. Monty even in old times always marked everything with BAT emblems.

The default looks like this since 4.x - always:

Yes, Stock and SAS Modact backgrounds are still there, buried in SFS...

................

BAT is built upon the International version of IL-2, the issue comes from your locale=ru. To make it work you will have to use something like (untested):

background0_ru.mat
background0_ru.tga
background1_ru.mat
background1_ru.tga
background2_ru.mat
background2_ru.tga
...

background0_ru.mat would look something like this:

Code: [Select]
[ClassInfo]
  ClassName TMaterial
[Layer0]
  TextureName background0_ru.tga
  tfNoWriteZ 1
  tfNoDegradation 1
  tfMinLinear 1
  tfMagLinear 1

Check other posts and experiment a little. I am sure you will figure it out, DESPEREAUX!

Sorry for the dumb question, but just to be clear, there is no more way to customize the Campaign or Single Player country folder backgrounds correct?  Or is there a way to make that work still?  I have seen some nice mods back in the day for several countries...  I'd be interested in knowing how to do that with BAT if it is at all possible.

I am talking about folders like "\Missions\Single\RU", the original mat and tga background files are there, but they do not work.

make sure the tga is formatted correctly. The country backdrops seem sensitive, the launch screens not so much.
Do not compress them for instance. Otherwise I don't know what else too say that's not written there.

ehm, Desperaux are you sure they go into mapmods folder?

You put the contents of the archive into the batmods folder yourself, and then turn on the mod manager.
Do you want to say, would it be more convenient if the archive was unpacked to the root of the game?

no...I just noted in your zip file that it was zipped up while sitting in the mapmods folder, at least that is what you get when you unzip it keeping the folder structure... shouldn´t such backgrounds rather go into missions\single\... and missions\campaign\... ? I have never put backgrounds into the mapmods folder...
btw I have not used jsgme and never will for IL2;

EDIT: fingers were quicker than the brain....tried it out and the flags now show up :) they look really great as background I have to say...thanks a lot :)

I thought we were talking about screensavers with cats .. read the "mapmods" inattentively ..
With flags, yes, as they are packaged and put them in the mapmods folder, there shouldn't be any problems.

noooo, but recently I have collected quite a nice collection of WW2 pictures of pilots and aircrew with their mascot doggos...
of course it was Johnnie Johnson and Guy Gibson who featured prominently there ....

btw you should maybe check Franz von Werra, who had adopted a pet lion as his mascot....

A good idea. :D
It is a pity that there are a limited number of screensavers.

Well, I really appreciate the information.

As long as you use the

* "#<MOD>3\MAPMODS\Missions\Single\<country_digraph>" or
* "#<MOD>3\MAPMODS\Missions\Campaign\<country_digraph>" folder with a proper background.mat file that has the content:
Code: [Select]
[ClassInfo]
  ClassName TMaterial
[Layer0]
  TextureName background.tga
  tfNoWriteZ 1
  tfNoDegradation 1
  tfMinLinear 1
  tfMagLinear 1

And a corresponding "background.tga" graphics file/picture, it does not really matter what dimension you use.  You can put whatever you want...  Take a look below:

(https://i.postimg.cc/c4M2SD3J/background1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/dL34Rj4M)

(https://i.postimg.cc/FRLCnGmN/background2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/G8bj4FH5)

(https://i.postimg.cc/xd7FRhw6/background3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/SX6rQTN9)

(https://i.postimg.cc/Z5wQ9CVt/background4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/68Gcg6kY)

(https://i.postimg.cc/XvXz94zZ/background5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NyqDcqYY)

And this is nice because I'll be able to have a background for UQMG single player missions again in UQMG (Single\NN).

All the time I want to try your UQMB, but I haven't tried it yet. :D
Are the missions that he builds too heavy?  I mean, if the computer is weak, will it be able to digest the mission?

I like the flags package very much - thanks!

But...I've probably overlooked something very basic, how do I adjust the transparency of the 'metal' overlay so that the background image shows through?

Hi guys! I decided here to draw a new collection with screensavers for BAT-WAW, in the style of the old scheme.
I hope you will like it:)
Installation: Place the contents of the archive in the root folder of the game. Open the mod manager, find a mod called "# WAW_SCREEN_Old-Schemes_EN" and enable it. After launching the game with the WAW module, new screens should appear. Who has the Russian version of the game, respectively, download and include the version of "RU".
All 15 images are ready.
Enjoy;)

one little question are the TGA's 8 bit or 24 bit ?
cannot find a program that will save my tga as 8 bit. any help please ?, I have been doing my own but they are not showing up. the lowest I can save them in Infview & paint .net is 24bit.TGA.
thanks

I am close checking the tga's i changed to see if I "went over the lines" as they say in stretching out my pics to fit the canvas size. infview and paint dot net are great and paint.net is good for keeping layers right. some times the tga's are 8 bit. other times they turn up 24 bit. depends which version of the game I am running . My paint . net will give a choice of bit depth but in this instance it wouldn't let me pick an 8 bit setting, it auto went to 24 bit.
keep looking ! lol. always good to play around with stuff.
stay safe.
cheers

If it still doesn't work. You can just give me your images and I will save them in the format I want.  :)
