CREDITS

Special thanks to all the B.A.T. Team and all the modders who, in all these years, gave us so much new content for this beautiful
game. My most sincere thank you to all of you, you guys did an amazing job over the years.

Big thank you also to Danperin, not only for the immense support he gave me during the preparation of this project but also for
making one of my dreams come true. I can't thank you enough for "Smoke II" and "Snoopy Sniper" skins Danperin.
This release is also dedicated to you.

Another big thank you to the map-maker who made this project possible: Dixiecapt - South Vietnam 1968

And now for the skins. The skins played a key role in making my missions.
Major thank you to: Danperin, vampire_pilot, MADMICK71, Texx, dona, mm, vpmedia, ecf111, OC-Tiger, Batbomb,
_Harpia_Mafra55_, wasted, warwagon41, irisheyes, Killer Ghost, MAX-theHitman.

I did some modifications on Texx MiG-21PFM and mm F-104C skins to have some blanks. All credits for the original skins to them.

Thanks also to ecf111 for the mission concept behind the requested mission "Vigilantes"!
Thanks also to dsawan for the mission concept behind the requested mission "Iron Hand"!

PLEASE, if you see your skin or perhaps one you know who belongs to, and it's not in the credits list, contact me via PM on SAS forum
and i'll fix immidiately the credits list. I did a long search to find all the names of the authors but some skins are without the author
name, some are unretrivable and some have been in my game for so long i forgot who made them.
So please, if you see one of your personal skin or one you know who made it, CONTACT ME TO POINT WHICH SKIN BELOGS TO WHO.

And in the end, THANK YOU to all SAS and community.

Hello everyone, this is my very first mission pack available for public use. I did over 100 FMB mission in my Il-2 journey and i always wondered if one day i could publish some missions to let everybody see my works. The day has come.
This mission pack is a long-delayed work of mine, originally planned for BAT v3.5 Musketeer but due to personal issues and continuos delays i was unable to continue my work at a good pace.

This mission pack is SEMI-FICTIONAL, let me explain what i mean:
The missions are all based on real life operations during the Vietnam era, with historical research behind them, and some directly take part in the most famous battles of this war, like Hue assault or the siege of Khe Sanh.
My concept in this Mission Pack is to have historical events fused with more generic or "routine" missions in the Vietnam scenario. All units, vehicles, ships, etc are my interpretation of some of the real operations during 65-73. Instead of researching each and every detail for each mission, i just made a fun, enough historical, challenging mix of various missions spanning between several armies and mission objectives. Some may argue that it's a childrens arcade, and in some ways they are right, but i think that a bit of fictional togheter with some historical events/units creates an engaging environment for the casual week-end player to the veteran ace too.

MAIN FEATURES:

- 40 engaging missions spanning between the period 1965 to 1973;
- Breathtaking dogfights, intense CAS strikes and much more;
- 6 Air Forces present: U.S.N., U.S.M.C., U.S.A.F., R.A.A.F, R.V.A.F. and V.P.A.F.;
- 34 different planes available; from the classic F-4 Phantom to the nimble MiG-17. From the fast F-104 to the massive B-52.
- Challenging enemys, deadly AAA, SAM positions. You better watch your 6!
- Custom targets and attention to details;
- 40 Walkthrough readmes;
- 11 different mission types; from standard Air superiority and Close Air Support to specialized missions like Search & Rescue and Armed Patrol.

Mission pack additional info:

Mission lenght: the missions vary depending on the objective. My missions last an average of 30 minutes but there are of course exceptions. Some may last little more than 10 minutes while others are way in the 40 minutes or even 1 hour (from take-off to landing). I tried to create short missions that would be fun but that do not require ages to get to the target. In the majority of the missions there will be some "travel time" between take-off and AO, so you can admire your plane or plan your strategy.

Walkthrough readmes: i made a readme for each mission with all the info you might need when playing. As the name says, if you have some questions about a section of a particular mission you might want to read them first since i spent a lot of time doing them.

Suggested auxiliary mods: there are a few auxiliary mods i have installed in my game that are not obligatory, but strongly suggested to enjoy the best experience possible when flying. Each mod is listed in the "Installation" readme inside the Pack.

Installing everything: there are 2 readmes present in the Pack. The aforementioned called "Installation" with all information regarding the correct installation of Missions, Skins and the suggested auxiliary mods (please read carefully), while the other contains all the credits.

I uploaded today the 1.5 version, with fixes for the missions In Plain Sight, Awakening and Titans.
Thanks to whistler that signaled these errors now everything works as it should.

I'm sorry for yet another update but i forgot 2 times that the loadouts needed the _ between each space...yeah i'm stupid
All other missions work normally.

this is a work in progress anyway ;)

But you could separate the skin pack from the mission pack itself, so the up-  and download volume for a simple mission update would be significantly smaller.

These are great enry 711, being not much of a jet jockey, thought I would give this a try.  The missions could have been really long, but I think you got these just right, with a great selection of aircraft and scenarios.  Your B-52 mission has to be my favorite ( even though I got blown out of the sky with the first Mig pass !!) the sight and sound of 5 B-52 in close formation ( doing a Flyby F3  ) shock the room...Awesome!!! mate if this one of your first mission packs, we can only look forward to your future one's...Many Thanks for these.

Thank you very much NIGHTFIGHTER  :) I'm already working on 1.6
The B-52 mission was one of the hardest to make, since the AI has troubles with this massive beauty and a lot of time was spent to test every modification each time.
Just to start all the engines you lose at least 5 minutes. ;D
I had the privilege to view this beast live at Duxford inside the "wonder hangar" and i always had a soft spot for it.

If you have any trouble with a specific mission be sure to check the Walkthroughs inside the install zip, they contain a lot of info regarding tactics, targets, situation and general infos about each individual mission.
The B-52 is very vulnerable to SAMs and fighters not only due to his immense dimensions, but also because the D/F variants do not have countermeasures aboard and the only defence you have is the 4x.50 gunner. Be sure to travel at a sustained pace during the bombing run in order to minimize the time you are exposed to the MiGs and also to fly close to your wingmen.
Don't forget to pray that the SAMs don't lock on to you ;D

Thanks for that info enry711, like you I recently was given a tour of a 52 after it had an in flight emergency and diverted into our base where I work ( the scale of that beast never fails to amaze me ) Back in the first gulf war I was also given a patch from a 52 crew member stating "B-52 tail gunner...Game Over" this was because they were beginning to phase out tail gunners in the aircraft.

Post by: enry711 on December 29, 2019, 08:05:00 AM
Wow it must be awesome to work on an airbase! Amazing
I always liked the B-52 since i was little when my dad gifted me a nice B-52D with SEAC camo. I played with it so much that i broke it... ;D
At Duxford i was astonished by the incredible collection of rare planes they had inside the "wonder hangar"...U-2 with the SA-2 SAM, A-10, B-17, B-24, even the SR-71. The B-52 LITERALLY took 100% of the ground floor space. It was an integrated part of the hangar structure basically ;D

If you want i can make more missions with this huge beast for 1.6 8)

Mate you can if you want, it's your baby.  but i think you will be limited as you say, not only will it be hard to do but you also have to remember it would take one hell of a computer to deal with the mission.  Duxford is a wonderful place full of very interresting things and im glad ive been there many times, but as i love aviation it's like disney land to me.
Title: Re: Wings over 'Nam (Vietnam 1965-1973)

The hard part is in matching the same waypoint times of the AI B-52s and the player plane (especially with take-off take into the count). It's just time consuming for the main part, then it's a standard mission. Also the N. of planes in flight is limited to only a few squads; the reason is that the B-52 uses A LOT of RAM and i must find a compromise between performance, mission pianification and scene setting (or graphical look).
 ;)

Hi guys, just letting you know guys that this project is still very much alive and currently under development for patch 1.6
Wings over 'Nam 1.6 will include missions with less popular 'Nam planes, that currently struggle to have a proper mission to highlight their true potential or role in the SEA theatre of operations...Expect surprises!

While 1.6 is WIP be sure to download vampire_pilot AWESOME campaign for the F-105s! https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,63300.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,63300.0.html)

Title: Re: Wings over 'Nam (Vietnam 1965-1973)
Post by: ecf111 on February 19, 2020, 04:03:15 PM
Thanks again for all of this! Here's one of a couple of requests, if it sounds interesting.

VO-67 and VAH-21 US Navy P-2 Neptune campaign/missions, night interdiction, sensor/recon gunship missions over Ho Chi Minh trail and elsewhere. The current P-2 franken(BAT) is great but a bit limited in weapons/sensor capability, so I thought these would be great missions for mace's fictional F7F-AJ mod along with the P-2.

Just looking for missions in the sense of the squadron operations, no real dates or missions, which are hard to research anyway due to the clandestine nature. Whatever seems fun in the way of night interdiction, gunship and sensor/recon ops, totally up to you. I envisioned using both P-2 and the F7F-AJ in conjunction. The P-2 AI is not so great at AI ground attack, just level bombing from at least medium altitude, but could maybe do recon runs and flare drops.

I made skins for both aircraft and squadrons:
P-2 Neptune: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,55222.0.html
F7F-AJ (now in BAT): https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,62944.0.html

Wiki and a website for the squadrons, I can help with more research.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VO-67
http://www.vo-67.org/vo67_opening.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VAH-21
https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/ap-2h.htm

Suggested optional add-on but not included in BAT for the P-2, A rework of Stefan SG's folders for adding the bombsight and additional weapons, compatible with BAT. Place in #JTW3 and add to the weapons.ru
http://www.mediafire.com/folder/97johaiw9swdz/!P2V5_Neptune_4.11_4.12

Sorry if that sounds like a lot, just something I wish I could make but just end up skinning. Most of my skins are made because I wish missions were around for those particular aircraft.

Thanks again for all of your work, I'll post a few more requests that aren't so complex soon.

ecf111:
Great suggestion! I made a single mission some time ago with the Neptune in the Falklands War (private but i can share it if someone is interested) and i tested it togheter with some C&C features. I managed to have a reliable, working ship-searching radar and crew thanks to these features and the final result represented quite well the sensor capabilities of the Neptune. I still need to test them all to exploit the full potential.
In some of my missions, especially the dogfight missions in planes with 2-pilot crews, you will notice that i managed to use to full potential the Navigator/WO in the back seat. It will warn you of enemy contacts, your '6 and to start evasive manouvers. Try out "War Thunder" or "Victor Charlie" missions to better understand what i mean.

Your request is very welcome! I will finish writing the Walkthroughs and then start working on 1/2 missions for the Neptune.
Regarding the T-Cats: i know that they are incredibly well-made and full of new feautures aboard (that i wish they were also in other planes) but since, technically, it never existed in this version, i must do some testing before making this exception. For now i can assure you i will start testing both the F7F-AJ and the Neptune, and see what's best to obtain the sensor/recon capabilities you wish.
If the F7F-AJ is needed, i'll be happy to include it too in the official plane roster.  :)

Thank you very much for the skins too!!! Your works are always amazing.

dsawan:
Sorry i didn't understand the comment...You mean "Send missions, at least early ones?"
Please confirm.
If correct, i need to think about it. Mainly because i costantly modify them to obtain 3 goals: Fun/Scenario/Performance.
Sometimes i make small adjustments, sometimes i make a major overhaul.
If i make a provisory WIP download it would be obsolete in 2 days.

Hi, I meant Sead(suppression of enemy air defenses) since the last patch(3.7) added sams of some type, would it be possible to do them with the f-105 in early operations.

Whoops...my bad sorry
Of course I can make them ;) I already made a mission called "Danger Zone" where you suppress SAMs with Skyhawks. I'll do at least 1 with your specs.
Be sure to try out vampire's amazing campaign ThudRidge for more F-105 action 8)

thx. Reason I ask is because of the YGBSM incident where the early f-105's had to bomb sam sites and another group provided cover. Think it was before the shrike or ecm countermeasures for the thud.

dsawan:
Ok understood. Interesting idea.
I'll work on that and let you know of the progresses.

ecf111:
Could you please send me via PM more details about the Neptune ops? I mainly need the precise roles, sensors and coordination between the sensor-equipped Naptunes and of the intruders.
I might have found something similar in the C&C objects to simulate the sensors aboard but it's still under testing. Tomorrow i'll the the F7F-AJ.

I started to work on the mission requested by ecf111  8)
I managed to recreate, via testing and intense use of FMB, a semi-realistic method to represent the sensors of the leading Neptune.
Nothing too special but for now TOP SECRET  ;)

Hi Enry,

Sorry for the delay. New advanced sensors of the day that were originally tested on Neptunes included FLIR, low-light TV cameras, ground vehicle radars. The Neptunes were outfitted as gunships and some of the technology applied to later aircraft like the AC-130 and A-6 Intruder. The VO-67 squadron using OP-2E Neptunes would drop a sonobuoy like device into the jungle to listen for ground traffic. I'm not sure this could be replicated. The VAH-121 Squadron developed on this with more advanced sensors and electronics. I only suggest the F7F-AJ because it has side-looking radar, low-light TV cameras that would be on the Neptune. The Neptune is sorely lacking in the gunship armament so the F7F is there to help with weapons delivery. You really only have bombs with the AI neptune, if you add the files I posted it will utilize the flares or target markers.

I too have some Korean-era Neptune missions WIP, and the sensors can be simulated with C&C and the mini-radar. I just thought it would be fun to utilize some of the new stuff on the F7F-AJ since I'm not capable of adding it to the Neptune or additional weapons loadouts. I think it can be done since mace left a bunch of modder info in the F7F read me, but I'm not sure. It might be possible to add many features to other aircraft with some modder magic and mace's blessing.

All missions were in support of Trail Road Interdiction, as well as targets at sea.
VAH-121 operating out of Cam Ranh Bay:
https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/ap-2h.htm

VO-67 operating over Ho Chi Minh Trail:
https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/op-2e.htm

I appreciate you looking into it, it's really just an armed recon request I guess. However you decide to make it I'm sure it will be fun! Mission particulars are hard to find due to the clandestine nature but I will keep looking.

Thanks again!

Thank you very much DarkBlueBoy! Many more will come.  ;)

Dsawan and ecf111 your missions are READY and will be included in 1.6  ]thumbsup[
I hope that you enjoy them, i think i achieved a good result for the Neptune mission (especially considering the resources we have in-game) and a fun and enjoyable mission for the F-105s.

AHAHHAAHAH bigans!!! What a funny night it has been!
Some severe difficulties aboard USS Shangri La  ;D
I was in the orange F-4 and bigans in the red tail one. A weird bug made us spawn in the same place, with rather hilarious and explosive effects. :))

I'm working on making all my missions available for multiplayer, with some differences here and there to increase compatibility. They will not be included in 1.6 unfortunately, since i need to refine/translate all the missions. The one seen in the video is the multiplayer version of the mission "War Thunder"

Check this out! Me and Bigans flying "War Thunder" and attempting to land the mighty Phantom. After a few attempts we both managed to land it, with some fails and close-calls here and there (my best close-call at 15:35) 8)
Bigans lands flawlessy at the 1st attempt, while my successful landing starts at 15:51. We both had a lot of fun, and when i will release my missions for multiplayer i'm sure you enjoy them as much as we did.  ;)

Thanks mate!  8)
For now i can say that 1.6 will have 10 new missions spanning between all years of conflict. (65-73)
As shown and said some days ago they will mainly focus on not so popular 'Nam planes that in our beautiful BAT have little or no love unfortunately.

I wanted to do more but in this period i'm full of things to do and i really want to let everybody try these new missions. This is why there will be "only" 10.
Be sure tho that for 1.7 and 1.8 i have already big plans with more missions, more popular planes and with the already mentioned multiplayer missions.

I will update this thread periodically, with news and patches so stay tuned!  :)

The missions and pack are made by me while my dear friend bigans helps me by playing the multiplayer versions and providing feedback.  ;)
I'm currently working on "translating" all 40 missions to be available in multiplayer.

In the mean time, enjoy the current ones. Me and bigans will keep you updated on their progress 8).

Just to let you guys know that, yes we are still very much alive  8)
I did a lot of work in the last few days and i can finally say that all the 30 missions from 1.5 are compatible with multiplayer!
In the next days i will work hard togheter with bigans and hunter in testing, optimising and reinventing these 30.

Some screenshots taken today:

We had a lot of fun...and a lot of crashing  ;D

I'll keep you updated ;)

Are there any plans to make a full-fledged dynamic campaign on the map of Vietnam?
Title: Re: Wings over 'Nam (Vietnam 1965-1973)
Post by: enry711 on April 18, 2020, 03:29:31 AM
Hi Phantom11

Right now i don't have plans for a dynamic campaign, i'm focusing on the contents for 1.7 but it's a solid possibility for the next updates

The plans for 1.7 are the following:

+20 singleplayer missions
+20 walkthroughs
+30 multiplayer missions

So in total there will be 60 singleplayer missions and 30 (at least) available for multiplayer
I converted all the original 30 missions from 1.5 to be available to play with up to 6 players simultaneously, with several plane choices, strategies and locations.
I'm still unsure about converting the 1.6 missions but 80% i'll convert them too
Singleplayer will recieve a lot of new missions with the more popular 'Nam planes (since in 1.6 i specified that i wanted to introduce specialized/unpopular planes) and i'll be focusing on F-4s, F-100s, A-7s, A-4s, A-6s as well as some plans for the other Air Forces.

Of course you can send me your REQUESTS if you want a specific mission with your data and instructions  ;)

Finally i had some time today to work on 1.7. The first mission is almost ready!
Regarding multiplayer, i'm proud to announce that ALL 40 missions (1.6 included) are now translated to multiplayer!

The hard part is now testing: i need people to try them out and send me back feedback.
Bigans and Hunter are already helping me but there's room for more volounteers! If you are interested write down here a comment like I am available for testing!
If somebody is interested i'll organise a session on Hyperlobby or via Direct IP. I have Teamspeak 3 and Discord if needed so we can coommunicate better.

The 2nd mission is at a good stage! The A-7 is just beautiful for ground attack
Testing is also rather intense...Severe damage has been delivered and severe damage has been recieved
I think that the combo A-7D+M61A1 Vulcan+Napalm+supply depot is one of the most fun ;D

Yep! I'm surely a LOT lighter without those useless metal parts!  ;D ;D

I'm currently building the 3rd mission for 1.7. I wanted to honor the C-135, a beautiful plane that played an important role in delivering troops and supplies all across Vietnam.
I'm focusing on making the mission as pretty as it can be, considering that it will be restricted to a simple and long cargo/personnell travel from Da Nang to Saigon.
You won't shoot down houndreds of MiGs, but at least you can relax and enjoy the scenario ;)

Nice. Pix like that often make me think how awesome it would be if we would have more modern cargo and passenger-planes etc. ingame like Jumbo-Jet, A-380 or maybe Antonov, Galaxy and such. But dunno if that would be technically possible at all. Looking forward to your new version!  :)
Title: Re: Wings over 'Nam (Vietnam 1965-1973)
Post by: enry711 on May 07, 2020, 09:05:37 AM
Thanks Hans-Joachim Marseille ;)
I'm not much into civilian planes but classic planes like the 707, 737 and 747 are surely majestic.
I'm writing this message as I'm flying around in the C-135.
The mission will be one of a kind, very linear. Lots of flying and no shooting but I strongly wanted to honor the C-135.
More "dogfight" pilots will 100% skip this but I wanted to make a unique mission to relax and just fly.
There is still the challenge to actually land tho! The conditions are terrible and visibility is poor, so only skill will prevent you from crashing! ;)

I can tell you that in JTW the difficulty in landing changes massively. Personally for me i find difficult to land with the F-4, C-135 and A-6.
Other planes like the A-4, F/A-18, F-16 and in some degree the F-104 are easier for me.

I just managed to land succesfully while testing; the first attempt ended in a massive tail-strike and crash.  ;D
The weather surely gave me a challenge while landing, no visibility and the weight of the Stratolifter doesn't help. Only runway lights can save your landing.

Hey guys!
I'm almost done with the 5th mission for 1.7. The new missions i'm making are honestly a lot of fun! I guarantee that.
Lots of action with my favourite warbirds, good re-playability and beautiful scenarios.
Finally, i'm implementing mission ideas i had since i first released this project. Due to technical and time issues i wasn't able at the time to make them.
But now that i have both of them resolved i can finally transfer ideas on proper missions! I'm also taking inspiration from Vietnam-era paintings around the internet if you believe that 8)
REQUESTS are still well-recieved! Let me know your ideas!

By the way i made a Poll in this thread to better know your opinions about 1.6 Wings over 'Nam. You can find it above the main page.
I will change it once every 2 weeks, and i ask your partecipation to improve further more this project.
I'll ask you very simple questions to know what you think of several Wo'N-related topics.

In the meantime, 2 beautiful screenshots i made while testing.

I recently started with some mission-stuff myself and all I can say it cannot be appreciated enough - it is a lotta work especially when you want fine details, etc. when "done" you always find tiny mistakes you made often with waypoints and things. I really thank you and man I am so gonna play this! Vietnam is a really interesting scenario. :)
Title: Re: Wings over 'Nam (Vietnam 1965-1973)
Post by: enry711 on May 21, 2020, 02:12:30 AM
Absolutely Hans-Joachim Marseille! Vietnam is not only "Drop Napalm everywhere", but it implies lots of smaller and unknown operations, as well as room for devastating airstrikes and knife-battle style dogfights. There are so many special planes that played interesting roles in this war, and some of the most beautiful jet fighters too!
As shown in the 2nd screenshot, i always try to insert as much details as possible, sometimes even too many for my PC  ;D
The details help to immerse the player, and therefore create a sense of how "real war" was, even if i must descend in darker details like corpses and such.
If you play the mission shown with the Huey at dawn, with the Platoon OST/We were soldier OST, you'll get a chilling sensation.
My goal is to achieve that. ;)

I ALWAYS find smaller bugs or errors in my missions too. Often they aren't critical, but if they do i'll fix them immidiately (like in v1.4.1 and 1.5 upon release).
I'm super happy that you want to play my project!!! 1.7 will be WIP for quite a while, 20 missions + 40 converted in multiplayer takes time.
I'll keep you updated on progresses.  8)
