Important:

Before posting a bug please make that it hasn't been posted in this thread already.
Also make sure that you followed all the instructions in the readme (https://gitlab.com/vrresto/il2ge/blob/master/README.md).

For me to be able to help you, you will need to post the contents of the log file: il2ge.log.
For the log to be more informative an additional library is needed:
Download https://github.com/jrfonseca/drmingw/releases/download/0.8.2/drmingw-0.8.2-win32.7z and copy the file bin/mgwhelp.dll to your IL-2 directory.

Hello Guys,

I know, it is not a bug per se but I am kind of clueless:

I wanted to test GE and have it installed according to the readme. When I load a mission in game, my game crashes using the GE mod.

I've checked the  il2ge log but I failed to analyse it:

With version 2ge-build_238146133 I had exits to the desktop every time I tried to enter in the plane, in several missions of the SAS Server, something that was not happening with the immediately previous versions. The same thing is happening to me and several mates in HSFX 7.0.3.

Here I leave the eventlog and the il2ge of the last failure with UP3.2, this happens at the moment of touching the "fly" button.

On BAT 3.62 it's all ok.

The latest version, il2ge-build_245214463, gives me the same black screen problem in BAT, the only installation where I tried it.

The previous version, il2ge-build_242724627, works perfectly well in BAT3.6.2, UP3.2 and HSFX7.0.3.

I can confirm there is a crash when zooming in in the FMB, although with a different message:

The latest build fixes the FMB crash that I was having.

Hello,

I don't know if it's a fault or it's normal at this stage of development but cyrrus clouds appears only at certain highest angles of view and sometimes the sky become black.

I'm using the latest release with BAT 3.6.2. I've tried it on Crimea and Smolensk maps.
The same happen with a vanilla Il2.

No one else experience the same?

P.s. Many many thanks slibenli, this mod is always better and better!!

I believe that the latest downloads autogenerate the ini file. That is probably your best bet but here is what is in mine if you want to create your own:

Yes this Modact 5.3 version has been mercilessly modded and tweaked over the years but normally plays flawlessly with steady 60 fps.
Indeed the previous builds of il2ge have worked fine.
If I reinstall previous build of il2ge the game works again.

This build works, but with two caveats
1) Several attempts are needed to start the game - min 4, max 12 (to date) - each time an error report is generated.
2) Game will not start with cirrus clouds enabled

I also thought the fact that I have Benders Ultimate Environment installed may be having an adverse effect, but after disabling this there was no difference in any of the builds.

Is this the latest build or a variant?

Note -
The successful launch required 27 attempts to start the game - each time, after the splashscreen for a few seconds, it went back to the selector
The unsuccessful launch was selected from one of the 27 fails

The mission played fine with steady 60 fps and good il2ge effects

EDIT - Now I'm wondering if previous builds would have started eventually, as this may be the first time I have persevered and tried as many as 27 attempts to start the game!!

I have copied the whole drmingw-0.8.2-win32 folder to my hard drive, and then copied the file mgwhelp.dll to the il2 root directory?

Yes, the game gets to main menu, open FMB, open mission, press play, mission loads and crashes at 100%

BUT - with the previous builds, the mission actually loaded and I could fly the mission; the problem was that it was taking (for example) 27 attempts to start the game (ie the small "loading" splash-screen appears, then crashed back to the selector)
This latest build only took seven attempts to start but, of course, as I say it crashed when mission is loading.

So, in some ways the previous two builds that you sent were better in the sense that a mission could be played, albeit after a very protracted series of starts.

Looks like this build did the trick.  ;D
It still takes several attempts to start the game (which I can live with), but it plays fine - got the cirrus clouds (great, by the way) and black sky (not so great) as per other users.
Despite the experimental nature of il2ge, the lighting and graphics look superb!!

How does this work?

This latest build gave no improvement - it still took several attempts (variable) to start the game but there was also a significant drop in performance with frame rates down to single figures in certain circumstances.
I flew two benchmark missions - one on the GreenHell map over Rabaul and the other on my own Coral Sea-Solomon Sea map also over Rabaul.
I chose Rabaul because in both maps the town has a very dense object population; actually much greater in my Coral Sea map, where even my 2080Ti is unable to maintain 60fps when the town is directly in view.
With the latest build, however, the drop in FPS was dramatic over the towns, around 50% drop (sometimes down to around 10fps) in Greenhell and 50% to 70% drop (sometimes down to 3fps) in CS-SS compared to the previous il2ge build, which was pretty near to normal performance without il2ge

The performance drop is expected because it's a debug version.
The last log doesn't show a crash though (il2ge_crash.log just remains from a previous crash).

So far it seems that the crash is caused by changes to the logging mechanism.
The latest build reverts to the old mechanism (which uses only il2ge.log as output, so it's best to ignore the other il2ge_*.log files for now).

The performance drop is expected because it's a debug version.
The last log doesn't show a crash though (il2ge_crash.log just remains from a previous crash).

So far it seems that the crash is caused by changes to the logging mechanism.
The latest build reverts to the old mechanism (which uses only il2ge.log as output, so it's best to ignore the other il2ge_*.log files for now).

Copy all that - I only posted the logs to illustrate the performance drop; both logs represent playing the game and flying the same benchmark missions all of which was fine apart from the fps drop in the debug build (I didn't realise this was to be expected)
The start-up "crash" so far, however, seems to endure regardless of other factors when il2ge is enabled.

Once il2ge is disabled there is no start-up crash; the game starts first time and plays perfectly.

I just tried the latest WIP build and got the fail to start "crash" for 12 attempts and then on the 13th attempt the game started and played perfectly.

Indeed, like PO Mak has suggested, perhaps this fail to start "crash" has been encountered elsewhere.
Just to ensure we are all singing the same verse of Jerusalem, the following sequence happens when il2ge is enabled -

Open Il2 selector (latest version)
Press "Start IL2 Now"
The small "Starting IL2 1946" splash screen appears for a few seconds then disappears
Then immediately the selector pops back up and I repeat the process until the game starts.

So far the game has always started if I have been patient enough and kept on pressing the "Start IL2 Now" button (the highest number of attempts so far is 27, but on the 27th attempt the game started and played perfectly.

There must be something installed on my particular version of Modact 5.3, something fairly unique given that no one else has reported this issue, that is conflicting with il2ge - maybe one of the many mods?

In my reply #41 in this thread I told Steven that it would not load, but now I think it would have loaded if I had kept on trying, just like in subsequent builds that you have sent me.

Considering that it only happens with il2ge (but not all versions of it), I think it's worth investigating.

That message is normal when you don't have il2ge installed and doesn't indicate an error.
The crash must have a non il2ge related cause.

This build started on the 5th attempt and played perfectly.
After quitting it then took eleven attempts to start the game which again played perfectly.
I tried five more times and always got the game to start. The greatest number of attempts was 23.

Using a test sample of 30 attempts at starting the game; with only ObjectShaders enabled in il2ge.ini

The first build performed as previously;
Game always started, most often with the first attempt (17) and usually within three attempts (9). On four occasions it took five attempts to start the game. Once started the game played perfectly, with il2ge effects displaying normally.

The second build was similar but with a better first attempt performance (20)

I can live with this level reliability  ;D

Although that's no guarantee that there won't be more crashes again in the future.
A re-install will probably help.

Cockpit mirrors not working properly is a known bug.
The new lighting system didn't do anything yet - so I removed the option as not to confuse users.

OK, the problem is that your driver doesn't support the method glReadnPixels, which is part of OpenGL 4.5.
Installing a newer driver might fix that.
I should probably mention in the requirements that il2ge requires OpenGL 4+.

There is a side effect though, which is wrongly lit objects in some cockpits, for example of the La-7:

Only noticable with the setting Atmosphere=Precomputed.

I'm using the alpha blending mode as a hint to determine whether a rendered object is self illuminating, which fails in the above case.
More precisely: If the opengl blending mode is set to GL_SRC_ALPHA,GL_ONE - I think this corresponds to the option blendAdd in the material definition files.

After updating the drivers, the game + GE (normal version) started correctly.

Could you scroll to where il2ge.dll is extracted and make a screenshot of that?

Edit: I'm pretty sure that the problem is because of the space in the IL2 folder path. I will take a look if this can be fixed in the installer.

One other note: I'm doing a clean install of IL2 on my machine and while the installer runs successfully, logs are not created in the main directory, so I'm not sure if this particular install is working as intended. Any ideas?

This looks like an old version of IL2 Selector - at least version 3.4.2 is needed.

Edit: But il2ge.ini should have been created anyway. Do you still get an error message from the installer?

I dl'd a copy of 3.42, which caused il2 not to load at all, probably some file mismatch or something missing, so i reran the Pegaus installer and it now loads and il2ge works as expected. Love this "mod", your work is appreciated and impressive.

This is with il2ge, do you notice the lines that are seen on the surface of the water?

Yes, this could be the source of the problem, the options for "perfect mode" are greyed out in-game despite HardwareShaders being set to 1 in config.ini. Any suggestions?

1/You must use openGL and not directX, could be a clue

I switched back to normal graphics for two reasons:
beautiful as it is, il2ge drains performance quite much on certain maps, making them not really usable when there are loads of planes, flak, ground objects etc..
and second, on quite a few maps, there is trees in the water and on certain winter maps (as has been reported already), ice is not shown but water instead, making those maps "interesting" to use too... one map (cant remember right now which one, but I can find out if there is interest) would not load at all, producing a CTD right after loading of the mission starts...

but all in all, il2ge produces mostly beautiful results and if those performance issues and certain map anomalies can be ironed out, I will gladly reintroduce it to my install...

Me too Griffon_301 my gameplay is smoother without il2ge and i found the lines on maps very annoying.

Guys, this is a WIP project.

@Griffon: If your game suffers from CTDs when using il2ge, you could contribute to the further development of this great extension by posting your logs.
It's vital for devs to know what is going wrong in user installations, and it's endlessly frustrating to get "doesn't work" replies back without any useful information.

@PO_MAK_24RIP: I don't think anyone really prefers "the old graphics", it's rather that some appreciate the new ones enough to deal with the remaining issues while others don't.
The lines on the maps are a known issue and I'm sure slibenli will tackle it one day.
The fact that longer view distances reduce FPS is something that applies to all games everywhere, we'll have to deal with this as long as TD sits on the native library codes and continues to lock down the game further on instead of working together with us.

For the time being, the reduced FPS gameplay is what makes.me stay with the "normal" graphics, beautiful as il2ge is though....

Make sure that you are running OpenGL mode. IIRC perfect mode is not usable with DirectX mode.

Guys - Is everyone running the game with "Expert" mode enabled in the Selector???

I've forgotten to enable this a few times when going back into the game after using the map editor - and il2.ge doesn't seem to run great without it.

The latest builds run great in my BAT 3.8.3 even in my massive Coral Sea-Solomon Sea map
Check Slibenli's readme and make sure all the requirements are met!

Yes it was a bug - which is fixed now.
I only occurred when the intro video was enabled - which is why I didn't notice it.
During the intro video hardware shaders are disabled - hence the crash.
I've changed the logic to disable the graphics extender while hardware shaders are disabled (but still print an error message in the log).

This is for anyone still experiencing the lines on the water issue. I'd been rather tearing my hair out with it . Now I made some changes to the conf.ini & Nvidia settings all at once.
Yes, I know that's not the way to proceed you should do them once at a time, but nevertheless they're gone for me. I don't know which change was effective, but anyway....
In the conf.ini I changed TexLandQual= from 1 to 3
In the Nvidia Inspector I changed:
Anisotropic Filtering to 'Application Controlled'
Antaliasing Gamma Correction to  'on'
Antialiasing Mode to 'override any application setting'
Antialiasing mode to 16x[16x CSAA (4 colour + 12 cv samples)
Apologies to all the experts to whom I'm no doubt stating the obvious, & I know everyone's rig is different, but I hope it helps at least some of you like me who were having trouble with this.
