Hello everybody ! ...and Thanks God it's friday ;D ;D

This is a re-post of a batch of screenshots previously and wrongly posted in the "New memers safety area" where it didn't quite belong, sorry, believe it should be more apropriate to drop this in here, so here it is   :)

Below is a our map - named Green Hell - ranging from Port-Moresby to Rabaul or Madang to Milne Bay, even further to Woodlark or Samarai Island (for Catalina lovers), for those of you who likes long flights, it takes around 3 hours + to fly between two opposite corners of the map  ;D

thanks all, the map should be released in april, still in the process of improving textures and airfields.
Bellow is a bit of the Milne Bay area :

The airfield complex, on the foreground, Turnbull, just behind on the left is Gurney, then far away Waigani can hardly be guessed
(https://i.postimg.cc/jqN0cKmF/Milne-Bay-complexe.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Yjpsqcp6)

Turnbull airfield

(https://i.postimg.cc/Hsszx9w9/gurney-1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/grQ8tRBx)

Waigani
also called airstrip 2, never completed by the allies and soon left abandonned. This strip ended up solely used for emergency landings, and there were many..!
(https://i.postimg.cc/ZKwSBH1b/piper-b17-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bsSM4xyW)

The entire bay of Milne Bay can be seen at far.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qBX004wC/piper-site-strip2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3WRzFMPK)

This Piper L5 is circling the strip on a search and rescue party, just after a mission damaged B-17E that couldn't make either Gurney or Turnbull, had been reported safely bellylanded there.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3Rx6TQx2/NEW-PIPER-1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CZ9JGtDK)
That Fortress crew is soon to enjoy some warm beer in the mess at Gurney  :P

Thanks for watching, new screens should come up soon again  :)

Very, very nice looking map.  I like the the boundaries of the map which include Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Madang, and Rabaul.  These places, to me, are most essential for a New Guinea map.  I just might have to transfer my B-26 campaign from the stock NBNG map to this map!

Hello Tokyo Rose.
I'm curious to know how you got the idea to think about making this map and its bases? Really curious.

Hi Cricri, no worries, it's not the first map on New Guinea as a few talented mappers have led the way with inspiring releases !
I guess we must be kinda fascinated by this theater of operation, were daydreaming of a map allowing missions within the triangle Port Moresby / Rabaul / Milne Bay and... that got us into that mess  ;D

The bases, if you mean the airfields, are those that were used from 1942 through mid 1943, we wanted to show them all with the most accurate possible look and atmosphere.

Counting about twenty of them so far and we'll post a few screenshots as we are finetuning the details.

Hello again, below a few pics of two small but historicaly major airstrips of New Guinea :

- Wau, elevation 3450Ft and surrounded by moutains, not an easy approach to land as many C-47s drivers found out the hard way ! Due to mountains, this was a "one-way" strip and basicaly once you were lined up and close enough, you were comitted to land with no provision for a missed approach.

- Kokoda, focal strip along the famous Kokoda trail, alternatively taken by the Japs and the allies.

What version of the sim will this map be compatible with? HSFX, 4.12.2 w/SAS Modact 5.30, BAT or all?

Great choice in textures and map-design !   8)  Very cool , Congratulations!

I defenitely want to fly on this great map. Its just beautiful !

Thank you so much for your kind comments !

At this stage, most textures are almost modified everyday, as we never get 100% happy with them.

Well i'm a bit of noob when it comes to IL-2 versions sorry, but this map is being made on a 4.12 vpMedia and works on TFM38 too. Hope it will be compatible with more versions !?!

A few new screenshots of Vivigani airfield, on Goodenough island. This airfield will allow, from late 1942 on, to fly many RAAF birds to challenge japanese forces stationned in New Britain.
Moutains textures there, airfield itself and static still WIP.. endless story  :D

Then a couple more of Buna and Cape Gloucester at dusk.

Cheers ; )

Hello Tokyo Rose,

I believe that the version of the sim will be based on the objects that you used to populate the map with. With what you've stated thus far it looks like it will be compatible with the following:

4.12.2m with SAS Modact 5.30
Possibly BAT(?)
I don't think it will work in HSFX, however I could be wrong.

I know that there are some object finder tools used for folks interested in converting maps for their version of the sim. I'm not sure how there used or where to find them as I don't use them myself.

What is the scale of the map by the way?

No artist is ever satisfied with their art, but I would have to admit, these look perfect for the map.
Don´t change them too much. Overall nice details and landscape textures!

I am also using the VP-modpack (which is cool for me too), which is actually the basic 4.12 game with just a few more mods and
excellent new skins+map textures included into it. So this should work for alot of people using this map in the future.

Good luck and have fun with it.

Those mountain slopes are spectacular!  Very nice SRTM rendering  :)
So I guess there are no 3-D forest trees?  I only see palm tree static objects.

Hi Squashman, the scale is 1/1, say you take off from Port Moresby on a bomb mission to Rabaul, without accelarating the time that's roughly 4 hours + to get there and back, that is if you come back of course  :D

Cheers !

Cztx, 3D trees seldomely used indeed, might even get rid of them all. Btw your Burma Lower map (along with Cyberolas RRR jewel) kept us awake for hours and i like the excerpt you introduced your work with "...and as they descended into Burma for the first time they were struck by the colour of the Burmese foliage - the red and orange tints of the flowering trees which, in due course, we learnt to identify as the flame trees of the forest and the golden mohurs."

Hi Tokyo R

Marvellous!!! I also always make my maps 1:1 - it's nice to have a base to start from and return to - and it makes you realise what a vast battlefield the Pacific theatre was. A tribute to the brave pilots on all sides who flew those epic missions largely over open ocean.

Black Cats squadrons were stationed there and their PBYs would fly long night missions throughout the Solomon and Bismark seas, harassing whatever japanese ships and subs they would encounter or detect when eventualy radar fitted. During daytime, they would go again, but this time on rescue missions over enemy crowded waters.

The hydrobase at dusk, a couple of Black Cats PBYs are preparing to launch. Those missions were flown in the dark at low level, slightly above a hundred knots and often during more than 10 hours !

While some lucky off duty crew are enjoying a good "braai and boose" (for the afrikaners that might be amongst us :P) right on the beach.
They may think that this little island remote from the front line must not be the toughest place of the Pacific war zone to be posted at...

But tonight they're being observed by a rather univited guest...

Enough stories for this evening.
Within the upcoming days (weeks ?) when we're completely done with them, we'll present the two big airfield areas that are Port Moresby and Rabaul ; )

Not much has been achieved lately, Yann is concentrating on textures and i'm battling with Salamaua airfield, third of fourth time i've rethought it.

Rabaul airfields, for those that were there as of 1942 early -43, are getting closed to completion. A few screenshots from Vunakanau and Rapopo should come up in a day or two. Lakunai is still under progress, don't want to screw on this one if possible.

Meanwhile, for a refreshing change of scenery if i may say, we've worked on a few aircraft skins, Ki-43-I, RAAF P-40E and Hudson, Army Air Force Marauders.. Needless to say, all of them are "early New Guinean campaign", and when complete should be released together with the map.

Below a few screeshots showing the B-26 en route from northern Australia (allegedly, since our map doesn't go that south) to Port Moresby for a fuel stop, then off again for a low level bombing mission on Salamaua, seen in its latest (but not definitive) version.
Btw great B-26 templates reworked by Maty12 on the no less awesome Ranwers B-26 mod.
We know this is not the proper model of B-26 for early PTO operations, but we are not aware of any existing mod representing the early B-26s, with shorter wingspan and smaller vertical stabilizer/rudder, please correct us if we're wrong.

Hi guys,

thanks Karo and DHumphrey, and yes this is a 1:1 map ; )
been working on Lae, very important japanese airfield in 1942, home of both army and navy fighters.
Lae was complete... at least we thought ! It had to be entirely worked on again, since Yann has improved his textures or created others that are seen beneath.
Interesting to compare screenshots dating back from january this year, then march, to screenshots of the latest version of Lae that i completed yesterday. A few roads to extend further though, some color and static touch-ups and i'll be done with it.

So, Lae then and now...

In my viewpoint as an artist, I would honestly say you got the detail of a muddy-watered filled crater quite well.
I would use that texture in a map.

Did you ever looked at aerial recon photos of WW1 trenches and their millions of craters?
Look at them close up.
Get real close to a high detailed photo and check out the little details.
You will see some craters fiolled with mud and water from the previous rainy days. It is not a pretty sight.

Better yet, go to your backyard (if you have one) and dig a small hole, as if it was created by a fallen bomb.
Check out its details. Then pour some water on it as if its raining. Wait a while and look at it again.
Take photos if you wish.

Great screenshots once again on this fine creation of a map!
Well done!

Cheers
MAX

thanks for your kind comments and advice guys ! -will try to incorporate again a few ot those craters around Lae strip, althought another reason for their removal from the scene was that we intend to reprensent airfields freshly taken by the japanese forces throughout 1942 and therefore are not totaly devastated by bombs of all sorts, as this was to be the case about a year later.

I have a question regarding movies for those of you that are used to edit some, what software/freeware program do you use to edit movies using replays ? got a few ideas here   :D

A question.

Is modern imagery being used to assign landscape textures? If so, note that modern deforestation is much more extensive than for our time period of concern. My approach would be to "re-forest" to at least some extent areas which appear to have resulted in clearing at the hand of Man.

Post by: Tokyo Rose on April 22, 2019, 05:09:08 AM
Hi all, thanks WxTech and sakai,

that's a pertinent question WxTech and we truly apreciate all kind of suggestions !
Nowadays, totaly out of control rain forrest devastation has reached an alarming scale in Papua New Guinea :(

Modern imagery has obvioulsy been used in the process of creating textures and assigning them thereafter. But not only, and from a far. Many historical datas, along with black and white pre- (Aussie administration) and actual ww2 era pictures, have been collected to help us aprehend what PNG must have looked like back then.

That said, we’ve tried to pay as much attention as possible to what had actualy changed, by instance, when Yann first extracted topographic datas to create the map, we ended up with many lakes : we quickly found out that many of them were modern days artificial pump storage hydroelectricity lakes. Those bad boys were seeked and removed.

That below WW2 allied intelligence chart, among many others we gathered thoughout the web, proved highly valuable. It clearly shows PNG wasn't just about thick rainy forests.
(https://i.postimg.cc/gj296SdL/new-guinea-vegitation.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Kkwp651m)

Now, let's see how can a decent batch of pictures of the era come handy. Goodenough, an island Yann has thoroughly researched and worked on :
Vivigani airfield
(https://i.postimg.cc/QCh7g7nT/79-Sqn-RAAF-Spitfire-AWM-P02874-033.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/QCmTfMRn/Goodenough-Island-150951.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/tRNWqrYt/RAAF-aircraft-Goodenough-Island-AWM-image-P02875-154.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Those pictures leave no doubt, mountains and hills are covered by open grasslands, from their base to a height of a few hundreds of meters, when not up until their top.

Simply trying to stick to those photos, below is the scenery result we came up with :
(https://i.postimg.cc/Ls46VTHR/25-mars-19-14-00-30.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/FYq4r0dn)

(https://i.postimg.cc/BvhZ7K6F/25-mars-19-14-02-02.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Let's go mainland and take a look at the Wau valley (note the Markham valley looks quite similar)
(https://i.postimg.cc/mDDkTSqV/WAU-133721.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/3RcRNvQh/WAU-3869723.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/cCtJnLdn/WAU-4001327.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/mhxgNWr6/WAU-6176829.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://i.postimg.cc/g27LrQVQ/33434473-New-Guinea-Campaign-1943-6.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3kgxcLbF)
Once again, quite telling : grasslands as far as the eyes can see are observed and forests are down to poor tiny patches surrounded by large clearings and perhaps cultivated areas. This part of our map is still WIP, but the above scenics are definitly what we'll try to aim at.

Moving south to Port-Moresby coastal region, the PNG vegetation chart posted above states it's mainly "savannah". Pictures below tend to confirm that :
Kila-Kila, known as 3 miles drome
(https://i.postimg.cc/C1TZs864/Kila-Kila-Airfield-New-Guinea.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cKh4svWK)

The town of Port Moresby
(https://i.postimg.cc/kMyVWBNx/Port-Moresby-1942.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/23V8DjK6)
Here as well, seems not to be a matter of tropical forest all around, but rather isolated woods, bushes more or less dense, row of trees on hilltops, but basicaly we’re left with a dry savannah covering a good part of the coast to the shores, with very few sand beaches, if any.
And below is how we tried our best to interprete it :
(https://i.postimg.cc/rmh5CJ7t/28-mars-19-18-08-11.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tZx19hqX)

(https://i.postimg.cc/Wzhg9ZPY/28-mars-19-18-31-09.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YLBv0h0Q)

Now, that being said, our map must be covered a good 85% with thick forest, after all that’s why we named her "Green Hell" ;)

Happy Easter !!

I just saw a documentary film on the History channel about a downed allied pilot working with the local tribes in
Papau Guinea during WW2.  Fascinating stuff.
They were fighting off the Japanese and even tho the tribes had been converted to Christianism
and were a little more "civilized", when they saw their friends being killed, they decided to return back to
their old traditions of being "head hunters"  :o   They killed Japanese soldiers with blow-darts , chopped their heads off
and shrunk them!  o_O
The whole film story was fascinating, because a few years later while helping these tribes, the pilot was also turning himself
into a head-hunter . Shocking true story!
Needless to say, the Japanese were very afraid to hunt down these tribes in the mountains where they lived.

Great Max, just took the time to watch them entirely, those are two very interesting insights of what happened below the thick multi canopy of those pacific islands back then.. :o

Always thought that, as far as the extremely harsh PNG terrain is concerned, had i been given the choice, i'd have had rather been up in the sky - not minimizing aerial warfare risky business at all - than fighting and struggle to survive down under that dense jungle foliage, swamplands, most of the time prevented from seeing the enemy before it's too late and therefore from traditional military manoeuvering...
As you said, shocking true stories ! Any related vids more than welcome  8)

On a side note, presently working on small satellite airfields like Garaina, Bulolo, Bulldog, Aiyura...

Cheers

Thanks guys,

Yes Mandrill, that’s actualy the idea we also have of New Guinea and also the Solomons, maybe, maybe (?) at a lesser extent in the Solomons than in PNG, just an impression.
Worth noticing for those who have watched it, the movie "The Thin Red Line" that has been shot there on site, at Guadalcanal. It shows how large those (Kunai ?) grass areas can be.

Now straight to the point, we have a good news, and a bad news. The good news is that there is only one bad news : we wanted to apologize, due to professional circumstances on my side, i’ve been away from home and a properly equiped computer for 2 weeks and will be until june comes, which causes delay in the process of releasing the map, as Yann and i work together. Sorry for those who’ve been following and waiting.

Still, we were ‘that’ close ! So it’s reasonable to have good hopes for a beta version of Green Hell to be released towards the end of june.

Thanks for your patience  ]notworthy[  ]cheers[

Hi guys,

the map has entered its final stage. Port Moresby airfield complex will be finalized tomorrow. As of now, Kila Kila, Berry, Schwimmer, Durand and Rogers are there. The big ones, Jackson and Wards are to follow.

Rabaul is complete as of 1942 early 1943, i.e with Lakunai, Vunakanau and Rapopo airfields.
For the town of Rabaul itself, we borrowed and adapted Bee "Welcome to Hell - Rabaul 1944" actors.static to our need. He did an outstanding job there and a special thanks goes to him here.

All other airfields are done.
Textures, all of them created by Yann from scratch, have reached their final appearance and will be released as such, although Yann always has ideas to try and improve them ;D

We'll use the following week to work on the static, many hundreds of objects to position... not a walk in the park as the map is... vast ^-^

ADMIRALTY ISLANDS

We decided to add Manus island as it was held by the Japanese since april 1942. It is the only occasion were we "cheated" regarding actual geographical position and the 1/1 scale rule.
The Admiralty islands archipelago should normaly be a hundred miles farther north, out of the map perimater, but we thought it wouldn't really be noticeable, while it is interesting to include them mission wise.

I'm most excited! I presume this will be useable in 4.09? Are any objects not present in Boomer's pack required to obtain?

Thanks for all your herculean and heroic efforts on this awesome looking map.

The airfields blend so well with the textures!  Adding palm trees around the airfields looks nice as well.
I hope it won't be too hard to transfer and edit my New Guinea campaigns to this map  8)

//RELEASE TOMORROW// ]cheers[

Thanks for following and for your encouraging comments !

Our map will be available for download tomorrow evening european time. Please consider it as a beta version. Yann and myself would have needed at least a few more weeks to complete it as per our expectations.
Unfortunatly, due to professional constraints i won't be able to work on it until september now. So basically, it's either now... or in two more months  :P

Still, the map is playable and hopefully, campaigns developpers will use the opportunity to create missions around the map, until we soon release a more definitive version.

Any comments and suggestions more than welcome and will be taken into consideration as Yann should work on corrections and updates throughout this summer.

Cheers !

Awesome Tokyo and Yann !!! I know many of us here have been waiting patiently for your map. :) I know that I'm one of them.  :)  Getting your map before I have to move is awesome.

If I may, please include a step-by-step install process for your map, my PC skills are not what you'd call the best. I need a way to be shown to the light … hehe  :)

Hi everyone,

sorry i wasn't able to open a new topic on "PTO Map". Here is probably not the best place, so any moderator passing by, please feel free to move this post where it belongs.

So, below is the link to download our map Green Hell. As explained above, consider it as a beta, and moreover, our first attempt at creating/releasing a map  :P
Once again all suggestions are welcome, don't hesitate to report any bug, all will be taken care of, as soon as practicable.

Within the next hours, we will write a more explanatory post and give credits to whoever it's due.

In BAT, map loads fine, but can not save missions. My list of missing objects :

buildings.House$AirdromeRadar1B
buildings.House$ponton_bois
buildings.House$WoodenWall1
buildings.House$Jap_House05
buildings.House$DT_DMG_2
buildings.House$Jap_House02
buildings.House$Jap_House03
buildings.House$Spitfire_DMG_2
buildings.Plate$Runway_Generic_Short
buildings.House$JerryCan_water24_dead

Seems you have some mods I do not have, henkypenky... LOL

Will try it in VP Media pack !

Reporting results for BAT 3.6.2
Map loads fine and looks great in viewer. The detail is outstanding.
Cannot, however, save missions. I think there are objects in VP Modpack that are not in BAT.
I will investigate.
Great map all the same  ;D

Hello every body,
I've read vonofterdingen and henkypenky posts and just download the map from mediafire to check it.
As the co-author of this map no need to say it works in my VPmedia install !
I feel sorry its not the case for you and apologize for this due to hurry in packaging yesterday  :-[

First investigation in readme file makes me discover one part missing in static.ini addon.

So please add the following lines at the end of // Title Airfields Green Hell //

[buildings.House$ponton_bois]
Title           ponton_bois
MeshLive        3do/Buildings/GH/ponton_bois/mono.sim
MeshDead        3do/Buildings/GH/ponton_bois/mono_dead.sim
AlignToLand     0
AddHeightLive    -1.0
AddHeightDead    -1.0
Body            WoodMiddle
Panzer          1.9

I'm gonna check quickly other objects issues and will assure "after sale service"
Thank you for your very usefull reports.

Yann

Can confirm missing objects entries in BAT 3.6.2 static.ini

Code: [Select]
buildings.House$WoodenWall1
buildings.House$Jap_House05
buildings.House$DT_DMG_2
buildings.House$Jap_House02
buildings.House$Jap_House03
buildings.House$Spitfire_DMG_2
buildings.House$JerryCan_water24_dead

I guess these will be found somewhere in VP Modpack static.ini

My response was a bit too rushed, in case you don't have mixxpack textures just drop "Mixx_Pac/Spdr_Mixx_fields" in Tex_GH file and change last line of load.ini for:

TEX_GH/Mixx_Pac/Spdr_Mixx_fields.tga,4

I'm going to suppress all the erratic objects from the actors.static as they are not essential, except Jap_houses that I will upload the pack as soon I find where it comes from...

////////// GREEN HELL-new pack //////////

This is a new Total pack with corrections which should allow all of you to play on this map.
Some objects have been deleted in actors.static others have been imported in "STATIC_GROUND_Green_Hell" folder, popup trees should not appear on runways and all textures needed are now in Tex folder.

I am now loading and saving. I was still getting an error loading 2-3 textures and I replaced them in the load.ini with textures from other maps. I am running the Graphics Extender mod with my VP Modpack so that may be the cause of the incompatibility. Later today I will disable the Graphics Extender and try the original load.ini file again.

Very good news at least ! :)
Could you tell me which textures you had to change?

I changed:

HighCloudsNoise  = CloudsNoise003.tga to             HighCloudsNoise  = CloudsNoise.tga
Lowland0 = TEX_GH/Genericjungle_CLAIR.tga  to   Lowland0 = Pacific/Burma/Spain_1024_Ind_Green_17.tga
AirField2= TEX_GH/POM2048d222.tga  to              AirField2= Pacific/Burma/Palel_airfield_a.tga

OK, I guess you don't use High Resolution Texture mod as the main textures you had to change are 2048...

Please try with those 1024 textures instead, using original load.ini

You are not dumb, Henkypenky... a zip file would be good, because Mediafire asks us to become Premium (probably paying...) members to download the patch...

EDIT : ooooooooops... has been made when I was typing...

So... now, if I understand correctly, I must download :

-the pack in post 99,
-the trunks in post 102,
-the textures in post 106,

and that's all. Right ???

And the CloudsNoise003.tga ? where ?

By the way... I still have missing objects in VP ModPack :

buildings.House$MaintShed
buildings.House$Supplies
buildings.House$FuelDrum
buildings.House$MaintShedHoist
buildings.House$WorkTable
buildings.House$WheelChock
buildings.House$ToolBox
buildings.House$StepLadder
buildings.House$MaintStand
buildings.House$RepairShop1
buildings.House$TallMaintStand
buildings.House$MaintCart
buildings.House$Tent_1
buildings.House$HangarThreeNoObjects

Also, found a mistake in one of the objects.

You wrote :

buildings.House$WoodenWall1] which is wrong.

It should be :

[buildings.House$WoodenWall1]

And this time... map loads fine in VP Modpack, but can't save due to missing above mentioned objects.

But in BAT/WAW, map does not load for me.

I have this error :

EDIT : found my mistake in BAT ! These were the Genericjungle_CLAIR.tga and bump I placed in the wrong folder !

Yes at last! Works marvellously in BAT 3.6.2. Finally can save missions - that wooden wall brackets typo threw me for a while (one square-bracket missing was enough to prevent mission save), but yes fantastic beautiful map.
I highly recommend this map with ReShade using the "technicolour" pre-set, and weather on Hazy, with water=4 in conf.ini - time of Day 4pm on 15th June - stunning lighting and shadows. Wish I could show some screenshots but the postimage ap isn't working for me at the moment.

Only had a few test flights around Salamoa and Lae, but love the little details on the airfields.
Also, how great to have Port Moresby and Rabaul on the same map at 1:1 scale.

Well done Tokyo Rose Team and thanks very much

Good morning, found the typo Gaston menioned, such a small typo with great effect, however in my install the map works and missions can be saved. Map is looking really good, can see clearly why Dutch pilots called it 'flying over the kale' when flying over PNG. Thanks for this great addition, hope to see it in the next BAT update.

This is a fantastic and well crafted map - congratulations to all involved.

Installed in VPmodpack, just flew a P40 mission out of Milne Bay to look around the Trobriand Islands - beautiful!  I echo henkypenky in that it warrants inclusion in next BAT update.

I can foresee lots of time spent in this theatre. Now I just have to move my flight sim setup outside into the heat, mud and rain (and mossies) to get the right ambience  :D

Distance and true track from Jackson to Lakunai

on map:             792 km / 041°
on google earth:  796 km / 43,7 °

...so yes it's 1/1 scale !

Installation into my vpmodpack was quick and easy with the latest download file.  I did notice a misspelling for Rapopo airfield spelled with a K.  If that's the biggest error on this map then I'd be proud as the mapmaker  ;D

Hey CzechTexan ! thanks for those awesome screens 🤙🏽

Question tho, is your B-26 (nice skin btw !) a mod of the earlier version, i.e the one that served early in the PTO (featuring shorter wingspan and vertical stabilizer, high wing load etc..) or is it the most common later one ? (It seems so, although not easy to tell)

I’m asking because Yann and i have been looking for an early version mod but could never find one.

Also, we made a small skin pack for early PTO B-26s intended for Green Hell or any PTO related map.
It just needs some final historical livery check, then we’ll upload it, you might find it of interest 😜

The B-26 mod is the later version with longer wingspan.  There is no early version, as far as I know.  Anyhow, It's good enough for me.  Shorter wingspan (and its adjusted FM) is not really a big deal for me.  I'm just glad to have a B-26.  You all know we waited many years just to have it! ;)

As for correcting the text, it's much easier for users to open the Text file in the Map's folder - and then find the name and correct it - then save the file.  IMO much easier than downloading a new file.

Are you sure the B-26s over New Guinea had the early roundels with red circle in the star?  When I made these skins, I think I read that the red was painted out, but I'll have to find that source.  It's been a few years!  I made that campaign about three years ago but never released it!

There were B-26s flying out of Australia with stops in New Guinea as early as April 1942 conducting raids against Rabaul. The center red Dot was starting to be phased out in early May '42. The book "Samurai"about Saburo Sakai mentions the raids by B-26s in the spring of '42 as well. Far more B-26s flew with the white star field of blue circle in the Pacific. I'd say both are correct.

I need to correct myself.  I found pics of the wreckage of B-26 "Dixie" on PacificWrecks https://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b-26/40-1496.html
This a/c belly landed on August 7, 1942.  The pic shows that it still has the red dot in the star.  Apparently, some, or at least one a/c, still wore the red dot as late as August '42!

I've just (finally!) Updated from 4.08 to 4.09, and have just finished copying over the plethora of mods I've both accumulated and made myself.

I gather that this map requires some objects beyond those included with 4.09 and Boomer's Object Pack (as available at m4t). 'Twould be nice to have a comprehensive, single list of the non-Boomer objects, as well as the location(s) from which to get 'em.

The downside of the never ending creation of objects is something of an ongoing headache. Perhaps a collection of everything available following Boomer's assay could be packed into an SFS archive (or two, if needed)? Just an idea... ;)

Hi WxTech,
As a 4.09 user may you tell me all the objects you miss and send your static.in for comparison?
I would maybe able to definitely solve any problem...
By the way I don't know how to create an sfs file, I m only able to extract but it's a good idea.....

Hi Mosquito
Packing SFS files is the easiest thing imaginable with Benitomuso's TotalMOder
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,42295.msg475889.html#msg475889, even I can do it  ;D

The map of course now works fine in BAT, but I can't get it to save missions in my standby installs of SAS Modact 5.3 or CUP (updated to Part 22, which I believe is the latest)
Can I add the missing objects to the list? After all it would be great for all users to be able to fly missions over this fantastic map.

Mosquito,
I wasn't in any way suggesting that *you* do the object collation into an SFS file. You've already done enough on this front. ;) I was merely mooting a notion for the community at large.

I have no idea as to how complete Boomer's Pack is with respect to different game versions and their stock object inclusions with each. It obviously contains lots of objects not supplied with official game updates.

What a stunning map, brilliant effort overall.
Map loads & saves in BAT Blitz for me.

One thing though & this could be at my end?

In FMB I can set Home Bases & assign their army successfully to all airstrips.
However when I open the mission, the Kokoda Home Base is missing (I can see all the other Home Bases)!?

Thanks for your map art.

Just a follow up on my previous post.

Has anyone else used Full Mission Builder to set up a Home Base at Kakoda, saved it, and subsequently found when opening up the game to spawn at Kakoda that the Home Base can't be seen?  All other airstrips on the map work fine.

Thanks in advance

I would like to ask the map authors and anyone who has downloaded this magnificent map for a small favour.

Please would someone mind simply opening the map in FMB, place a Home Base at the Kakoda airstrip, save the mission as whatever, then open the mission to see if the Home Base is actually showing and can be spawned at or otherwise.

This will answer whether there is either a problem within the map build or if the problem exists only in my download.

If you don't mind, please advise your findings to help solve this mystery.

Thanks again.

Sikshoota

Some pics below to highlight the process I've taken...

First, Kakoda airstrip with Home Base assigned to Red successfully in FMB.
Second, Kakoda airstrip in mission with Home Base now missing?...note the two other Red bases to the North of Kakoda showing in the mission pic as per normal.

Hello Mousquito,

Thanks for the rapid reply, much appreciated.
Well I'll re-download/install etc to find if I can fix whatever it may be.
I'll advise if successful in case anyone else may get the same issue.

Just installed this map, and checked out much of it in the FMB. Fabulous!!

I've been toiling off and on with my own update to the *stock* New Guinea map, and the areas shared by both maps has become pretty familiar territory. The textures used here really capture the variety of vegetation and ground cover. Render's my effort thus far as largely superfluous.

A bit of a missing element in this excellent map is rivers. Those present tend to be the flat, sea level variety, often terminating not so far inland (where the terrain begins rising to any significant degree.) I've found that painting thin rivers on map_c even up into mountainous terrain is fine. Although my implementation was planned to have the 'layer cake' forest textures covering much of such rivers, to partially hide them (which is typical for narrow rivers in reality) and thus make less evident the vast distance under them to the sea level water texture far below. ;)

I knew I'd be missing objects in my 4.09m game, even after installing Geezer's objects and Tomoose's groundcrew. (And I have Boomer's object pack, in 4 SFS archives...)

The missing objects:

The couple of "46" entries are puzzling, as I thought all those were already long since stock with 4.07...

And the blank plate entry seems odd, too...

So. Where to get this stuff so I can start flying?

Thanks again for the marvellous map; it'll be a highly ranked favourite of mine for some time to come!

A helpful hint..

All the runway (and Kokoda River) textures included in
3do/Airfield/PlateS/

have alpha channels. But their .mat tiles do not take advantage!!

Therefore, do this. For all of the base.mat files, change:

AlphaTestVal 0.5    to    0.0

tfBlend 0    to    1

This will rid you of the awfully sharp, artificial, hard-edged cutoffs, and smoothly blend the textures into the underlying landscape textures. Much more natural looking!

Another hint. All base.mat files are identical. Edit just one, then copy/paste it into all the other folders, replacing the originals.

Well, with no help coming thus far on my list of missing objects a couple posts ago, I did the following in order to be able to fly on this fantabulous map. ;)

For the blank plate object, I faked it by using the existing blank runway plate.

For all the others, I made them the same as the Russia Sortir (the outhouse, or outdoor crapper). You see, years ago I made this object very simple, with a single low-detail model having no collision box, no shadow, and a visibility distance of practically zero. Mainly because the Murmansk map was lousy with the damned things. So now when I have some intractable missing object problem as now... Ta da! No more missing stuff, and I don't have to bother with trying to divine some reasonably similar substitute. Just put up with the missing stuff by making it invisible.

I really should cook up a dedicated 'invisible' object for just this purpose. But this was an expedient solution for now.

In other helpful hints...

The pop-up trees (whc_Jungle) were too light in tone, standing out rather garishly as bright yellowish things in a darker landscape. I made a version for this map (GH_Jungle) that was made darker and of a slightly cooler hue (by adding more cyan to offset the yellow). Now they blend into the general green of the landscape textures much better, which has the salutory benefit of hardly calling attention to themselves when popping into and out of visibility.

Well, with no help coming thus far on my list of missing objects a couple posts ago, I did the following in order to be able to fly on this fantabulous map. ;)

I've personally never played 4.09, but my 4.12 installs (BAT & Modact 5.3) have benefited from adding the extra 3do sfs files (fb_3do27, fb_3do28) from the 4.13 game version.
Perhaps 4.12 has an expanded 3do file complement over and above that in 4.09?

Vanilla 4.12 goes to fb_3do26 and vanilla 4.13 goes to fb_3do28 (don't know extent of fb_3do files in 4.09)

I'll gladly put these in a Mediafire link if you think you might need them.

EDIT - By the way, thanks for the tip about altering the base files. It gives a pleasing improvement to the airfields.

Squash,
Never played 4.09, eh? Should we be checking behind your ears for dampness? ;)

Thanks for the offer of posting those later SFS files. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll let you know the latest for 4.09 when next I fire up my 'puter.

About that business of the texture transparency. It surprised me when I found numerous instances in the *stock* files where such failure to properly implement it was encountered. For instance, in the Japanese compass, such as found in the Zero and Ki-43. There, the .tga applied a gradient to represent diffuse shadowing upon the ball carrying the azimuth tape. But the .mat file's neglecting to command transparency resulted in a hard-edged cutoff in the shadow, instead of a proper blending. Makes one wonder if the original artists fully understood the various parameters controlling the way the graphical elements interacted.

Hi Tech
You are fully correct in your suspicions about the moisture levels immediately behind my ears and, sadly, I fear it will be some time before these areas are completely dry. Hearing advice from yourself and a few other notables has, however, accelerated the evaporation process considerably, though the odd drip does still occasionally splash silently onto my keyboard.

With this in mind could you explain in more detail how you "faked" the missing objects and how you changed the colour of the trees

Squash,
Second time doing this, as the computer locked up when almost finished...

Faking static.ini entries, in...

MODS\STD\com\maddox\il2\objects\static.ini

1) Create a new section just before the end of static.ini, naming it as you like.
2) Copy the names of the missing objects, as reported by the static ini checker utility, enclosing them in square brackets.
3) Copy/paste the contents of the object that is already in static.ini and which you wish to use as a substitute.

Here is the start of my new section, with the first few entries. The blank plate uses the existing runway blank plate data much earlier in the file. All the remaining objects have been given the same data as for the Russia Sortir (sh!t shack) I long ago made effectively invisible.

As for re-coloring the trees, this was done in photoshop. Because two of these three tree image files have alpha layers for transparency, the graphics software must be capable of saving files utilizing alpha layers. The freeware GIMP works fine.

I merely darkened the image brightness, added some cyan emphasized toward the shadows, and slightly boosted the saturation.

I'll post the result to mediafire for all to download, here in this thread...

Here is my darkened tree texture set (3 files), which blend in better with the general greenery and hence do not so 'loudly' call attention to themselves when popping into and out of visibility...

Note that this does not deal with the palm trees, only the so-called pop-up trees.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/07ez1rkmic0oazg/Darkened_trees_for_Green_Hell_map.7z/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/07ez1rkmic0oazg/Darkened_trees_for_Green_Hell_map.7z/file)

Enjoy!

If the map makers wish to link to this download in the first post in this thread (or wherever), that's OK by me. Or if they want to incorporate these files into the general map release, that's fine too. All my work is offered for anyone to do with it as they wish, without restrictions of any kind.

Thanks for the above!

Your "Faking" technique is nothing short of marvellous, in that such a simple solution potentially means an end to the irritating missing object problem with maps.

The tree colours are also a great deal more realistic.
Great work

In my post #159 I pointed out how to make the runway textures better blend with the underlying land textures. Now, I don't know if the following was present to any degree *before* I made this alteration to the .mat files (probably not), but it sure catches the eye after application of a zero threshold for transparency cutoff!

I discovered that for a few airfields there was present a partially transparent, dead straight line or two a short distance from the field, like a 'border'. Particularly obvious where located on/over water (as for Lakunai and Gasmata). Another similar effect was found at Schwimmer, where the border floats above the river just to the south.

Upon looking at the relevant textures, in the alpha layers for these there was a noisy fringe of partial transparency along one or more edges. Painting over this narrow fringe with black (for no transparency) cured that issue.

Yes, I see what you mean, the dark line is quite visible over water. There seems to be one also on the landward side of Gasmata but is barely detectable against the land textures.
Any chance you could put up a link to your modified files?

Squash,
As per your request:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/84b0sg8kbz9lcwj/Green_Hell_fixed_runway_textures.7z/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/84b0sg8kbz9lcwj/Green_Hell_fixed_runway_textures.7z/file)

The readme file contents:

NOTE: If you like the original 'hard-edged' appearange of the runway textures, then you may not need this mod at all. To at least check if you need the affected textures replaced, do this. Open up Green_Hell in the FMB. Go to Schwimmer (14-mile) strip and carefully look around the river immediately to the south. If you see the ghostly presence of a straight line hovering in the air (at the same elevation as the runway) over the river, you might want to replace the textures for:
- Lakunai
- Salamaua
- Schwimmer

Go to the obviously-named folder here, then copy/paste the SkinHi.tga file to the same-named folder where you first installed it.

Otherwise.....

This replaces *ALL* runway textures (NOT terrain textures!) and accompanying files for the Green Hell map. To do this, simply drop the plateS folder into the same
..\3do\Airfield\
folder where the current plateS folder resides. That is, you are overwriting the current plateS folder, which in turn contains some two dozen sub-folders, each for an individual runway texture.

What have I changed?

1) For every individual texture I altered its .mat file so as to enable transparency. This makes the edges of the represented runways, taxiways, revetments and roads blend smoothly into the underlying base terrain textures. Hence the inclusion of ALL related folders.

2) A few of these now transparency-enabled texture plates revealed narrow 'border' strips along part or much of one or more edges of the 1024px square texture, being particularly visible on/over adjacent water. The three strips suffering most from this are:
- Lakunai
- Salamaua
- Schwimmer
A handful of others have had similar edge strips fixed, even though being over land makes them difficult to see.

This fix involved simply painting over these partially transparent edge zones with black in the alpha channel, so as to make them completely transparent.

No other changes of note have been effected.

Hi all,

that's been a while we havn't been able to follow this tread, coming back at it, whoooow ! many things to say, many thanks to give !

Well, with no help coming thus far on my list of missing objects a couple posts ago, I did the following in order to be able to fly on this fantabulous map. ;)
Sorry some of you seem to have waited for aftercare and had to troubleshoot themselves, we both have many other things to do aside, families, jobs etc..  :P as far as im concerned, far from home with no access to a photoshop/il-2 equiped computer :(

Makes one wonder if the original artists fully understood the various parameters controlling the way the graphical elements interacted.

Well, no wonder anymore : i have close to 0 understanding how this works and relates all together  ;) i basicaly discovered the basics of photoshop and the intricacies of IL-2 1946 while creating a few skins and drawing the airfields for this map  :)

That said, many thanks for your outstanding work and improvement of our work WxTech  ]cheers[

- Your jungle trees suit our textures much better now !
- Your modification of the base file and your work on the alpha layer just wonderfuly changed the look of the airfields, althought we must admit it's a bit of "magic" to us as we're still trying to understand what the "alpha layer" really is.

We are just back working on the map, as you suggested, the rivers are being vaslty reworked and extended, many new pre-war strips are in the process of being added, and the static is being improved thanks to a pack of Australian very detailed maps Yann just dug out from the web.

Now, if we may ask for your expertise here WxTech, our runway objects have an awkward look when viewed under specific conditions as dusk, dawn or bad weather, they kinda shine, with a flashy greyish or icy look... we would like to modify this so those runways look more mat and or dark and keep their detail, but have no clue how to do this. A couple of screenshots below to illustrate :

Below, under fair weather conditions, everything looks as it should be (one again congrats on your modification WxTech, that greatly improves the runway objects edges and blend them marvelously with the underlaying textures !  :o )
(https://i.postimg.cc/wTv1c2Px/22-juil-19-10-45-50.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Dm9f7rnR)

Below, at noon, stormy weather problem :
(https://i.postimg.cc/L4zst7NM/22-juil-19-10-43-40.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/c6LZZFpD)

Is there maybe something to change in the light parameters of the base mat file ?

Anyway cheers for the follow up and help, we'll post a few other screeshots later on today to show how cool the airfields look with WxTech modifications ; )

To better match earthen object textures to the landscape, try adjust
ting the two most important parameters, diffuse and ambient. This might also require to tweak the texture's overall brightness as well, once some combination of .mat file values is found to give the best overall gradation of appearance under all lighting conditions.

You might start with setting both ambient and diffuse to, say, 0.7.

Or vary only one, in steps, over a large range, while leaving the other at 1.0. Do this for both parameters in turn, to see what aspect does what.

It might take some time to do all this!

Make sure specular and shine are set to zero.

Be aware also that the LandLight parameter the game is using plays a role. You can set your own LandLight value for a specific map by giving it a unique name. I recall Carsmaster did some work in this area, and a search should turn up more useful info (I'm getting ready for work at the moment, hence the brevity.)

Tokyo Rose,
I looked at the runways under all kinds of lighting and weather conditions, but see nothing quite like your screenshot, where you get a somewhat bright surface against the much darker surrounds.

My LandLight.mat (default location in Maps/_Tex), and which controls map-wide lighting, has:

[ClassInfo]
  ClassName TMaterial
[LightParams]
Ambient 1.0
diffuse 1.0

If you have no such file, create LandLight.mat, and copy the contents above into it. The values of 1.0 are almost certainly the default. If you wish to go darker, Ambient and Diffuse could be, say, 0.6 and 1.3, respectively. Or for a brighter map (potentially useful for winter), Ambient and Diffuse could be 1.0 and 1.4, respectively.

Now, I'm running 4.09, and the graphics dll's could be different from yours. All the default values of 1.0 in both LandLight.mat and the Base.mat files for your runways are working satisfactorily for me...

Hi Marat
What version of IL2 are you running?

I have GreenHell working perfectly in my BAT 3.6.2 install and in my VP Modpack install but, in Modact 5.3 and CUP (to part 12), despite having no missing objects, I cannot get missions to save - The map loads fine and I can open it in Map Editor, but no missions - Go figure?

This is a problem with so many different versions of IL2.
I now only use BAT as my benchmark.

It may be a texture issue? I will keep investigating.

It occurs to me that another factor is likely contributing to--if not fully responsible for--the anomalous brightness of runway plate textures. And that is that cloud shadows do not affect *objects*. These runways are just like houses, etc., in that they are illuminated at a fixed level, whether a cloud is casting a shadow upon it or not.

But the underlying terrain texture *will* darken due to a cloud shadow.

Sorry Marat, I'm not experienced enough to cast much light on your problem from your logfile.

It looks like there is at least one missing object which is logged many times - for example;

[18:49:43]   INTERNAL ERROR: MeshObj: Can't load SIM 3do/airfield_KDP/Path1/CountryLong_{0}/mono.sim
[18:49:43]   Mesh 3do/airfield_KDP/Path1/CountryLong_{0}/mono.sim not created

In your 3do folder there should be airfield_KDP (which I think for 4.13.4 is /#SAS/Mapmods/3do/airfield_KDP/)
then there should be a folder "Path1"
Inside this folder there should be a folder "CountryLong_(0)"
Then inside this folder are two files
Body.msh
mono.sim
You logfile indicates a problem with these two files

There may be other problems but try checking to see if you have these two files first.

I've just checked by searching in my SAS folder and found no such folder or such files. So, where it is possible to get them from?  :)

Map objects are not necessarily placed in the mapmods folder. Most are normally inside one of the SFS files in the game's root directory. (Unless one has a rather exhaustive list of modded/repainted objects in the mods folder.)

The best place to verify the presence or lack of an object (besides using the static Ini checker tool) is to look inside the static.ini file itself, normally located here:

MODS/STD/com/Maddox/il2/objects/static.ini

(The parent folder for /STD/ might be named differently, depending on the form of your game's mod activation.)

If an object does not appear here--even if you have all its related files in your mods folder--it's nonexistent to the game.

I just searched my static.ini using "KDP" as the search word, and found listings for road plates, concrete plates and paths.

I think these objects are included in Boomer's Object Pack (in 4 SFS files). At least, I greatly expanded my own 4.09 object count thereby.

Later game versions *might* have most or all of this stuff in Boomer's pack. But as a 4.09 Rebel I can't say with any certainty. ;)

I think Marat was saying that the static.ini checker tool found no missing files for the GreenHell map, but the map will still not save missions.
I tried a test of the GreenHell map in a Modact 5.3 install. Same thing - could not save missions even though the static checking tool found no missing objects???
Can you think of anything else that could prevent missions from saving?

Stand by Marat - from WXTech's post above, those files probably have nothing to do with the GreenHell map - the static.ini checker is obviously a better guide!

Perhaps consideration of every variable is in order. One thing which I've always had problems with is the presence of objects in the [House] section of a .mis file. These objects are short alpha-numeric codes of something like four or a half dozen characters, the meaning of which I am clueless. ;) If I can't fly a mission and find these things present, deleting them solves the issue.

Now, for my own self-made missions nothing (thus far) ever ends up being written to the [House] section. These things have only ever been present in missions I've downloaded in campaigns.

However, the big problem here is that no mission is created; nothing happens when the save mission button is pressed - so there is no .mis file to analyse.

The *only* thing I'm aware of which results in no mission save in spite of a map successfully loading in the FMB is one or more missing objects.

I wonder if the static.ini has an entry (or entries) there all right, but no corresponding  object(s) present in an SFS file or somewhere in /MODS/.

Does (or can) log.lst, or the console (SHF TAB while the map is open) give any hints to this?

This is for the first time I experience the problem when after successful checking the object with static ini checker the map does not allow to save a mission. No such problems occurred with other maps for me before. The maps with missing objects could be loaded in FMB (that's true), but in case any missing object of course the mission could not be saved. Then checker showed what object(s) was/were missing. After installation of all missing objects and checking again with checker, the missions could be saved. The situation with this beuatiful map is very strange for me. Of course I am not a professional and am very far from understanding of how the maps work, but I have no idea how to solve the issue :)

@Marat:
Static.ini checker compares only static.ini file with actors.static file. There is still the possibility that not all files writen in actors.static file are really present in 3do folders. This must be checked manually, and files present in static.ini must be added into 3do folders. Otherwise the missions will not save.

As a quick test you could try this -

I assume you have a 3do file inside your Mapmods folder? If not just make one (ie New Folder and rename to 3do)

Then inside 3do make new folder and name it airfield_KDP; then inside this make new folder and name it Path1 etc.

So you have the folders going down Mapmods/3do/airfield_KDP/path1/CountryLong_(0)/

then copy a .sim file from somewhere and rename it "mono", then put it inside Country_Long(0) folder
next copy a mesh file from somewhere and rename it "Body", then put it inside Country_Long(0) folder
Maybe copy these from Geezer Objects/SmallCrate

This should perhaps make a fake object so the map can save.
If memory serves me correctly I think the object is a small piece of pathway that can be joined to make a longer path, but not sure.

This may not be the only problem

Hi all,
Thanks for keeping this tread alive during holidays!
I did not have so much time this week but I feel so sorry about Marat's issues I searched for KDP paths.
They don't appear anywhere in sfs files or SAS folder (absolute mystery for me) but I found them in an old up_objects01.sfs in my computer...

So here you are:

To speed things up, because there may be more objects missing after this one, try this way -

Mosquito's download link has only Path1 objects, - so

Make a folder named Path2 inside airfield_KDP folder,
then copy the CountryTurn45_(-5) from the Path1 folder and put it in Path2 folder - these country pathways will look very similar in the map.

After this, if another object is missing in logfile - do the same again - making sure folder name and object-name are exact.

If necessary, rename a copied object to match the missing object name.

In this way you can tell quickly how many objects are missing and find them at your leisure - meanwhile you can save missions.

Maybe more simple, change your static.ini entry for this:

[buildings.Plate$Path1CountryTurn45]
Title           CountryTurn45_{-5}
Mesh            3do/airfield_KDP/Path1/CountryTurn45_{-5}/mono.sim

I extracted sfs file without checking path1 or 2 was involved...

Bwf,
Your list of missing objects looks suspiciously like my list! If you go back a couple pages or so, you'll find my temporary solution, which in a nutshell involves creating a 'fake' object for each and every one of your missing objects in your static.ini. In my case I used an essentially invisible object by modifying one of the objects I don't miss seeing--the Russian outhouse! ;)

I really should make up a simple, invisible object for just this purpose, which anyone can then use when in such pickles as missing some small number of objects that no one seems able to supply a link for, and which keep us from flying a map. I might call it "Temp_Placeholder", or some such.

When that happy day does come, where those pernicious, missing objects should come to light, one could then simply alter the temporary placeholder entries in Static.ini accordingly.

Simply copy one of the other folders eg CountryTurn30_(-6) into Path2 folder and rename it to CountryTurn45_(-5)
Make a list of all the fake objects; you can change them for correct ones later

In the searchbox at the top of this page, just enter the word Tomoose and you will be surprised what you find.

Also - click the Members button at the top of this page and you will find a "search for members" facility - search for Tomoose then select his posts and scroll until you find the right Mod.

Hi all, I have said it before and saying it now this game is designed to make you crazy! Had a working copy June 26th and wanted to try if I could see the differences between the 'default' edges and the ones Wxtech offered in answer #169. Guess what: couldn't safe a mission  o_O
Ok, so I tried a complete new install of the map, this time with Green Hell Beta and Geezers objects, I even swapped the alternate textures. A quick check with static.ini checker; all objects are found in your static.ini. But, you can feel it coming, still impossible to save a mission. And as there's no object missing, I really don't know what to do next to find what's wrong.  ::(

Logfile entries:

Can't open file 'Effects/Explodes/Objects/House/Rock/SmokeBoiling.eff'
Can't open file 'Effects/Explodes/Objects/House/Fuel/SmokeBoiling.eff'
Can't open file '3DO/Effects/TEXTURES/test_blue.mat'
Can't open file '3DO/Effects/GunFireDay/TEXTURES/GunFlare37mm.mat'

plus 10 times INTERNAL ERROR: Str2FloatClamp() - Clamped 0 -> 1 (delta = 1) to Range 1..512 although with different values. But I understood that these could be ignored.

Any advice is welcome.

PS complete log is still on my computer, if needed for any research

Addition: these files:
Can't open file 'Effects/Explodes/Objects/House/Rock/SmokeBoiling.eff'
Can't open file 'Effects/Explodes/Objects/House/Fuel/SmokeBoiling.eff'
Can't open file '3DO/Effects/TEXTURES/test_blue.mat'
Can't open file '3DO/Effects/GunFireDay/TEXTURES/GunFlare37mm.mat'  has got nothing to do with this map. I made a log of just opening this map and Crimea Summer - where I can save a mission - and all of these lines where in both logs. Quick search; can have something to do with conflicting mods.

Here's my temporary substitute object to stand in for missing ones that cannot be located for download. The default is invisible, but you can choose a visible magenta 'pointer' triangle (in order to see where and how many) by simply altering the static.ini path entry--for any or all objects of interest--from "Invisible" to "Visible".

Extensive readme included, as well as a template file whose contents are for pasting into your static.ini (BACKUP first, as always!) The template happens to be for my own list of 31 missing objects for Green_Hell, but is easily edited to suit for your own situation.

Hello there,

I've not been posting anything during holidays but I'm back on Green Hell business...
The map as changed a lot (I hope improved) since I found Australian ww2 maps and was able to plot many small airfields referred as Emergency Landing Ground or "ELG".

Some new textures have been developed and rivers flow very deep in the inland. All we need is to complete map_T  and static.ini.
By the way the final goal before release will be to identify every problematic objects and supply them as a separate pack for those in need.
So...I don't think this will be done before October... Sorry DHumphrey!

Nice!

I trust you are maintaining the proper river elevations, and not pushing them down to sea level? ;)

I wonder if adding the multi-layer forest textures over areas of boringly uniform forest might be worth doing. This would help with those rivers that run far inland and normally are hard to see due to the tree canopy. Or at least add these textures along much of the upper extents of the rivers to partially hide them. I raise this because it's odd to see what are in reality a cascading series of rapids on a quite narrow river turned into a calm, navigable waterway of considerable width.

Which leads me to suggest making stretches of rivers narrow and shallow so that they take on the shallow water texturing. This suggests those rapids so common in steeper river courses. Combined with forest cover in places, the effect will be far better than the usual river treatment.

The stock New Guinea map includes a field at Wedau (if memory serves). I see on Google Earth the faint remnants of it, although in a somewhat different place than the game has it. Will it be included?

I notice in the final screenshot of the last series that a number of short streams and tributaries are represented on the ed_map. Does this mean they are present on the terrain? I hope not, for that harks back to the old stock maps, which gives the awful appearance of a world dominated by great rivers all over the place. In reality, the lesser streams are so minor that they can safely be omitted, for one must be practically wading in them to know they're even there. ;) And even the major rivers are sometimes hard to see from any kind of distance due to tree blockage. Particular in their upper courses on higher, rough and forested terrain.

Hello there, i have tried to install this beautiful map, but got some issue. I found that all airfields have runways, except one its name Pongani, so i cant to save missions. Maybe somebody else faced this problem.

I do agree wide and bright blue rivers are not realistic but Il2 remains what it is and has never been developed to display a good landscape ... I remember what kind of stock maps we all enjoyed overflying 15 years ago! We have to skew geography in order to get an acceptable result so do not trust ed_map rivers width. This has been done only for identifying and navigation purpose when creating missions. They appear on game as small as I could draw them on map_c  (but still not enough...).
(https://i.postimg.cc/90tV9pFs/21-51-43.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/sGXtd5WJ)

Of course I spent many, many hours to get those rivers stuck on relief !
Your  suggestion about stream on rivers is an interesting and pleasant idea failing to be a simple one. Anyway, I'm gonna try to achieve it despite hundreds of kilometers of mountainous rivers... :-X

Wedau airfield remained unnoticed to me  :-[ and will be implemented soon.
In fact it seems there were two strips according to this 1945 Australian map. What about 1942 ?

The fact there was no airfield object at Pongani ( there is one now) isn't the reason why you fail to save mission. Check the missing objects in your Game (which version?) and please report them .

I have IL-2 412.2+4HSFX 7.03. Also added couple maps like Burma and Singapore (by cyberolas), Rabaul1944 (by Bee), Marshall Islands (by DaveOD06), Eastern Java, Borneo (by Squashman). Also installed sfs files from 413 version (fb_3do27, fb_maps21 & up_objects for Eastern Java map). All these maps work well.

For Green Hell map i installed Geezer objects and added entrys to the static.ini but it hadn't hellped. So that exectly objects i missing i dont know (maybe there is way how to check it)

P.S. if you say 'that there was no airfield object at Pongani', why this airfield dont have strip and all others have it? Maybe it some kind of bug?

Thanks for reply :)

If you can't save missions it is usually a missing object problem. Have you tried the static.ini checking tool.
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,762.msg8285.html#msg8285

Also read this thread if the static.ini checking tool finds no problems
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,44350.msg497558.html#msg497558

As the second thread says, the checking tool only compares the content of the static.ini file with that of the actors.static list in the map folder, so it is possible to have objects listed in your static.ini, but not have those objects in your 3do game files (or the objects may have the wrong path reference). In this case the logfile can sometimes give you a clue as to which objects are missing.

Try saving a mission once then exit the game immediately; open your logfile and look at the bottom (twenty? or so) lines and the missing object or objects may appear as a failed to load error.

Waiduooklis,
Look at post #219 on page 19. There I provide a link to a file that allows you to create 'fake', invisible versions of your missing objects. The file template can be easily expanded upon for as many objects as you are missing. A detailed readme is included.

At least with this expedient solution you can fly on the map. Chances are these objects are not used to terribly large number, and hence should not be badly missed.

If you're curious to see how many and where these missing things are, you can elect to use a simple, colorful spiked triangle object that will make it obvious just what you're missing. You could use this object for just one, or a few, or all your missing entries, depending on whether you want to locate specific missing objects or the whole lot.

For actual flying, make these objects all invisible.

You can use this technique for any and all maps, so you might want to keep it in your toolkit for those future, problematic maps. ;)

As you eventually locate formerly missing objects, delete their 'fake', stand-in entries and enter the correct info into static.ini.

I'd just like to give a pat on the back for the work on all the rivers - and NG has a lot of them!
I know how hard it is and time consuming to get rivers done well, especially in rough mountainous terrain, because the elevations of the rivers change as they flow from the mountains to the sea.  So, great job on that!

It'll soon be 3 months since the last update.

In the meantime I've been tweaking away:

- Added a number of new rivers, and extended a few already present. I'm striving to keep them as narrow as possible.

- Replaced the major river terminating immediately south of Lae with a multi-channeled one more like the real thing. I have yet to try underlying it with a texture at at least somewhat resembling bare gravel. It'll be hard to get an appearance like reality because of the way very different textures that are adjacent stand out with their lozenge shapes. I'll probably have to choose something less realistic, with more green or yellow than I'd like, so that the geometrical discontinuities are not so obvious.

- For the textures that are all or mostly all forest cover, I've replaced them with the layered forest scheme. I found the relatively small number of small-ish, isolated layered forest bits to be a strange thing where vast tracts of heavy timber are present. My philosophy: Either leave them out entirely, or make heavier use of them as appropriate.

I want to also add the coral reefs that are so prevalent on Google Earth. (I've done just this for agracier's New Georgia map, which makes a huge difference.)
Title: Re: GREENHELL 1942 (Eastern New Guinea and New Britain WIP)

I made up a texture to underly rivers having well exposed gravel/sand beds, like the Markham river (which terminates immediately south of Lae). Several other rivers can use this as well. It looks passably suggestive, even though I had to incorporate some patchy, irregular greenery so the the texture blends better with the surrounding vegetation textures; otherwise the straight-sided lozenge shape is far too obvious and unnatural.

This texture can occupy a freshly available slot in load.ini because I've freed up a few by reassigning the former ones suggesting all or principally forest to the layered forest texture.

Hi WxTech,  and everybody..!

Green Hell was never an abandoned project, and although we truly appreciate your interest in our map, we always intended to complete it ourselves ; )

We just couldn't be working full steam on it, you know how life quickly draws one away from non-essential matters.

When we have released the definitive version, you'll be more than welcome to start another thread to modify or improve our map as much as you like (we know only too much your magic) just hold on a little longer, we've done our homework and Green Hell will be available for download next week !!  :D ]cheers[

Happy new year everybody!
After a very long time we are pleased to announce the release of our map Green Hell 1943. This map has been extended to include New Ireland and Admiralty islands (Manus) on 1/1 scale.
Long researches have permitted to add many emergency airstrips and some new main airfields like Tsili Tsili, Kavieng, Madang, Gavuvu, Lorengau, Kiriwina and Dobodura complex...

Dobodura was the most complicated place to apprehend as those airfields were in constant progress after the battle of Buna. We decided to represent an arbitrary stage sometime up to summer 1943.

---Thus, we are also about to release very soon a 1942  "expurgated" version of the map deleting Dobodura, Ward, Kiriwina and other airfields not constructed at the beginning of New Guinea campaign.---

New textures have appeared and load.ini has been changed. So if you already use our previous map, please delete everything (map + texture files + all.ini entry) before installing.

Please report any problem in saving missions due to missing objects as this might be the main issue using this map on BAT.
Once this fixed we will no more regard this map as a WIP one !

That means every one can at present create missions and campaigns as the general arrangement of the map will not change anymore. Even if we decide in future to update actors.static or map_T to improve it a little we will not change anything.

We wish you to enjoy flying on Green Hell !

The Map loads but missions will not save in my  BAT 3.7.2 install. The missing objects indicated by the static.ini checker are listed as:

buildings.House$CrimeaFarmB
buildings.House$WoodenWall1

Sik,
Those objects you report missing are included in this folder:

++Green Hell 1943++\mods\STATIC_GROUND_Green_Hell

You must copy this stuff over. If you've copied this folder to your MODS folder (or whatever it's named), and you've copied the required new entries from the included "add to static.ini" file to your static.ini file, then the last thing to do is to restart the game if you added the mod while the game was running.

Note that this mod completely replaces the older version. If you had installed the original, you will already have in your static.ini most of the required objects (mostly runway plates). It's OK to have duplicate entries of objects in static.ini; extras are essentially ignored. (But I myself strive to have no duplicates, searching for any possible same-named objects and deleting the dupes.)

Incidentally, in the aforementioned mods folder are two other mods I created. One for simpler, fps-friendly palm trees, and the other being a darker texture for the '3-D' trees. You need not install these; they're completely optional.

Thanks for helping out WxTech, the map now saves in fmb.

The error was all mine, I thought I'd placed those files in my mod folder but in fact I hadn't.
The folder 'STATIC_GROUND_Green_Hell' was in my mods folder sure enough...but that was the first static ground Green Hell folder which of course, didn't have those objects!

My bad!  :-[

Once again, Thanks a lot

Since I corrected my 'missing objects' install oversight during the Green Hell 1943 installation, I am now enjoying overlooking all terrain & airfields and the scenery is pretty outstanding!  However, there appears to be something wrong with the following...

Please note that these observations only appear North from (the entire upper map section, but excluding the Saidor airstrip parallel (approx 57-58 Easting & AA-ZZ Northing on the map).  Saidor and all below looks excellent (except Wau airstrip which seems offset).  Of course, there is always the possibility of these anomalies being either my own eyesight or due to some error of mine (unlikely this time I hope!).

Observations:

ocean unlevel, noticeably around Hoskins (Gavuvu) airstrip, which itself is in the ocean.
scattered trees in the ocean (spaced apart as opposed to an intended 'Swamp like' appearance)
airfields seemingly offset from their originaly intended* locations (*compared to the first Green Hell map, assuming that's where the mapmaker intended?).

Another strange finding...

I can set the 3 airbases in FMB, L-R Bena Bena, Kaiapit & Wantoat, circled yellow below, however when I use the test mission in (multiplayer mode...probably irrelevant), those three bases do not appear when all others I set do?

I hope someone is able to find that there are no anomalies and that my findings wrong for the sake of the map makers great efforts to date.

Cheers

Sik,
The runway positional anomalies result from your using older plates. Some have changed, with the position within the square texture border offset notably sometimes. Wau is one such, which also has a network of roads added around the buildings to the NW of the strip.

Even though many plates are unchanged, better to replace all older plates.

I can't find your "Hoskins, looking SW" location; nothing nearby looks like the hill profile in your pic. In any event, I've not seen any odd sea level bumps anywhere yet.

Thanks WxTech, I'll dig deeper, maybe even uninstall the older Green Hell 1942 as well as Green Hell 1943 and all associated objects.  I'll then try a fresh clean install & see how that goes.
Your help is much appreciated.

This looks a awesome map from what I can see in the editor, unfortunately it will not save for me and yet I have added each of the objects others were having issues with and the universal static checker is not declaring any problems. :o

Take care.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

If the USIC doesnt work, I'd try to load the map in unlocked fmb and then check the log.
Btw, which modpack are you using?

Hello everyone Im trying to install this map on B.A.T 3.7.2 and this comes up on the FMB. As it loads its just grey screen with the words     section [MAP2D] not found in 'maps/Green_Hell_1943/load.ini
at the bottom left corner.

Im sure I installed in #waw3 and added the all and static as well the files into the correct areas. Plus the airfields are also in the objects.

I have not installed this map yet but just by looking at it I can tell that this folder structure in the rar never gonna work, you have to rearrange the whole thing.

You dont need a "++Green Hell 1943++" folder and the "Green_Hell_1943" folder should be inside a Maps folder (#WAW3/MAPMODS/Maps/Green_Hell_1943), same goes for the "_Tex" folder.

The "mods" folder is also not required, its contents should be placed directly into #WAW3 (#WAW3/Static_Ground_Green_Hell, #WAW3/fps_friendly_palm_trees).
The folder structure of the Darkened_trees_for_Green_hell_map is also wrong, it has two extra level of folders.

You will also need the missing objects from reply #246 of this topic in order to be able to save missions on this map.

I also noticed that the load.ini has 'desert' setting for camouflage, it should be 'pacific'.

I reworked this map a little bit:
https://ulozto.net/file/vwvgs4gWqMuM/mapmods-green-hell-7z

- corrected folder structure
- all textures bump mapped
- dark textures made lighter
- removed fps killing palmtree concentrations around Milne bay and Rabaul (the fps-friendly-palm trees mod does not do anything)
- navmap improvements
- fixed the white dots around the edges of all airfield textures
- fixed missing cloudsnoise texture
- resized the few 2048 textures to 1024 which prevented the map from working without extra mod

Extract to your game folder and add the included ini entries.
For BAT you will also need the missing objects from reply #246 of this topic.

What kind of trees? The layered forest cover? If so, I like that notion. Indeed, a little while back I essentially 'converted' the heavily forested areas to the layered forest textures.

No, to me adding layered forest would take days and it would change the look of the map.
I added .tree files to the Jungle_0*.tga's, so with forest=3 in the conf.ini you will get autogenerated trees on those textures. People with forest=2 in their conf.ini will not see a change. I just wanted some vegatation on some of the empty textures. I did not add more to other textures because I did not want any trees in the water, which is a common problem.

I tried using this map in BAT 3.8 with all the add-ons and ini's to date. The static ini checker is clean, no objects missing. It ran fine in 3.7 but in 3.8 it will load the map and it will even load a 3.7 version FMB mission, but for some reason it now automatically removes the ticked check in the player box in the properties tab. It will fly this 3.7 mission and will recognize player input, but when I quit the mission and edit in a new object it won't save the revised mission and then won't reload the previously loaded 3.7 version FMB mission. Nor will it save a new mission. When I quit the FMB, the screen displays a blue on blue blank screen and freezes.  I stripped out all the Green Hell ini's, folders and files and will try a new install and generate a loglst if it fails once again, but I thought I would just ask if anyone else has tried this map in BAT 3.8 with success?

Must have been something I ate. A clean install of the map using VPMedia's version with more trees, various static entries, xtra_buildings and path_KDP now works fine in my BAT 3.8.

An odd thing... My cirrus cloud texture is doubled up, with two images slightly offset from each other. Like suffering double vision. This seems to occur everywhere on the map. And it occurs whether I use a 1024 or a 2048 pixel TGA (more obviously seen with the higher resolution graphic because it's less blurred). I don't see this happen for any other map I have. Could it have to do with the large map size? Or could it result from some odd map dimension, it not being a neat multiple of some base number?

Anyone else seeing this? If you use a sky texture having little fine detail, it might not be so apparent.

G'day Tokyo Rose and MOUSQUITO

Firstly thanks for all the hard work, this is a very important map for us Aussies.
In reply #239 you mentioned that there will be a 1942 version of this map, this is the version I wish to build my campaigns with.  May I request that the aircraft revetments at Lae be removed as this was basically a dirt strip and little else.

Hi all, Im hoping some of you here may be able to help me out, Ive exhausted the search function and banging my head on the monitor doesnt appear to be working either. In short, the map loads in FMB, but I cannot save

This is the first map I have attempted to install manually and Ive obviously gone wrong somewhere, Im just not sure where. Ill try and list the install process I followed, which will hopefully help with diagnosing my mistake.

-I am attempting to install the map into the VPmod which is otherwise running fine
-Downloaded vpmedia's updated Green Hell version with more trees  (new version with more trees: https://ulozto.net/file/24JnZZYO9liE/mapmods-green-hell-7z)
-Unpacked to desktop
-Copied Green_Hell_1943 to: #SAS>MAPMODS>MAPS
-Copied TEX_GH to: #SAS>MAPMODS>MAPS>_Tex
-Copied 3do to: #SAS>MAPMODS
-Updated all.ini (file found in #SAS>MAPMODS>MAPS)
-Updated static.ini (file found in #SAS>STD>com>maddox>il2>objects)

The Green Hell map is found in the maps menu of FMB, in the appropriate place, loads fine, appears to have everything in its right place, but cannot save.

Because I am installing this into the vpmod, not bat, I shouldnt have any of the missing objects, but just in case, I did try installing vpmedia's greenhell_xtra_buildings_BAT.7z although this didnt help.

Any advice anyone can give would be much appreciated, if Ive done something obviously stupid, my apologies, this is my first attempt.

Cheers
R33GZ

The 7z has a !MAPMODS_Green_Hell folder inside, that goes into your #SAS folder and you have to add the included ini entries to static.ini and all.ini.

Thanks for the quick reply vpmedia. I have removed all previous files copied over and just placed !MAPMODS_Green_Hell folder into #SAS and rechecked all.ini and static.ini, both have the required entries, but I am still unable to save in FMB.

Due to my inexperience, I have had to take an educated guess as to exactly where the static.ini file resides. I have used the one found in #SAS>STD>com>maddox>il2>objects. Is this the right location?

Appreciate your help.

OK, so I downloaded static.ini checker - Looks like a great little tool - and it is telling me:

Missing objects in your static.ini:

buildings.House$MaintShed
buildings.House$WoodenWall1
buildings.House$FuelDrum
buildings.House$RepairShop1
buildings.House$WorkTable
buildings.House$Supplies
buildings.House$Tent_1
buildings.House$HangarThreeNoObjects

Just to confirm, Im running vpmod with no extra mods. I guess I just add these as entries to the static.ini file?

[EDIT] Have fixed WoodenWall1, it was missing a left bracket. The remaining missing objects were found in Geezers WW1 Objects. According to static.ini there are no missing objects anymore, but the map still wont save.

Im at a loss, Ive learnt a lot in the last 4 hours, but it seems to have been for naught  :(

If you load the map, then tab out of or exit the game, then chack your log.lst file in the game's root folder, you may find out what's causing the problem. It helps to have the instant log output mod installed, as this forces a more immediate writing to the log of any errors that occur.

Also, it can help if you travel over a good part of the landscape in the FMB, passing over at least some number of airfields/towns. After conducting this 'tour' of sorts, you would be more likely to invoke the load failure that is causing you grief, and thus catch it in log.lst.

Actually, whille cruising about in the FMB, you can simply periodically hit SHIFT-TAB to display the console output on screen. This info goes to the log.lst file as well, sometimes formatted a bit differently. But at least it will show with some immediacy if things are misbehaving, whereupon you can inspect log.lst for more completeness.

After hitting SHIFT-TAB (which freezes the game) and perusing the text output, hit that same key combo again to go back to interacting with the game.

Thanks wxtech, will give that a go, although, just to be clear, I can't fly on the map, because nothing on this map can be saved through FMB

Post by: WxTech on March 07, 2020, 01:00:23 AM
Indeed; if you could fly--meanjng you could save a mission--all this would be moot. ;)

At least being able to load the map in the FMB provides us with a kind of 'frozen' flight, with the special property of not requiring to load a plane. In this way we can explore what errors await to address.

The map was built using vpmodpack, so no missing object is possible.

In my game the fuel drum is in

ini entry

I can feel a re-Install coming on  ::(

I feel like a genius! even though I realise I have only fixed a problem of my own doing... kind of

Because I had taken only the relevant pieces from Geezers WW1 objects and for some reason put them in the 3do folder for the Green Hell map, the MeshLive/Dead file locations were different to the static.ini entry. Once i removed them and just took the whole Geezers WW1 objects folder and placed under #SAS, everything worked fine.

Why these were missing from my original vpmod install in the first place, I dont know.

Thanks to vpmedia and wxtech for the help, without the log advice and seeing the ini entry I probably wouldnt have clicked.

Cheers lads!  ]cheers[
