Title: Introduction
Post by: TRB604 on February 22, 2019, 04:38:25 AM
Greetings all. I've been playing IL2 online with my friends from all over the world, every Sunday evening, on a private server, for nearly 20 years. I'm 68 years old, and my hobby is building computers. As I'm retired, with plenty of spare time on my hands, I thought I'd have a bimble through the various IL2 forums. When I compared some of the screen shots to what I see on my comp, I was absolutely astonished !! What I play bears no resemblance whatsoever to what you lot are playing, with regard to planes, graphics, terrain textures, etc. In a nut shell, I want some of that too!! I've tried CUP, BAT, and VP mods, installed on fresh copies of base game, following install instructions to the letter, but I must be missing a trick somewhere, because none of them work as I suspect they should. I find this whole subject of modding absolutely bewildering. Please bear in mind, when offering advice and suggestions, that at 68 years old (ex RAF armourer),  my compliment of brain cells is somewhat less than it should be !! LOL
Comp specs:-
1000w PSU
Twin GTX 970 vid cards
Phenom II Black Six CPU
Soundblaster Z
64G RAM
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
8 TB of Hdd Storage.
Op system on 225G SSD
Any help and advice will be gratefully received. Thank you.

I've been away for years and when i returned things had drastically changed. I read all i could to get up to speed and installed all the mega-packs,(VP modpack,CUP,UP3 and a fully updatedIL-2 '46),and it took a couple of times but got them all installed correctly. One missed step can cause a lot of headaches. May i recommend VP modpack as it is one of the easiest to install and has a lot of great mods.CUP offers a ton of stuff but is more complicated to install, though easier than the old mega-packs were. I wish you luck and please read up all you can in the SAS essentials/basic mods threads to get you up to speed for VP modpack. There are a lot of things you can add to IL-2 '46 but i like to keep it simple and keep the mod-packs stock except for some missions added.Regards,Scott

What exactly are your problems? Visuals not up to expectations, functionality limitations, errors when running, not running/loading at all? Please be a bit more specific  ;)

There is also the package at Aviaskins -DGen Pack 2.1:

http://forum.aviaskins.com/showthread.php?t=4386&highlight=Dgen (http://forum.aviaskins.com/showthread.php?t=4386&highlight=Dgen)

It is less common on english speaking pages, is however worth to try, too.

Hi TRB604, Welcome!

Deceived by a screenshot? Don't! Many images have been edited by fine artists to look more realistic and/or powerful. Sometimes an unusual camera angle can give outstanding results.

Show us some screenshot from your cockpit and from outside and let us judge! You have to post 5 times before you can link images.

This is a good as '46 can look in my opinion:

What a fantastic video Whistler!! Well,  I bit the bullet, and have downloaded all the mod packs from scratch, (finished 04:00 hrs this morning), and will rebuild game folders later today. Would love to know what version mod pack was used in the video, what mod enhancements, what terrain mods etc. As I stated earlier, I'm finding all the mod and settings advice somewhat bewildering! LOL. I started learning how to build computers 30 years ago but, with regard to modding, I haven't got a clue.. To me, it's like trying to explain how a jet engine works, to a caveman!! LOL.  I'll report further once I get everything installed, and working properly. Thanks to all for your welcome, and advice. Believe me, it's much appreciated.

Hi and welcome

Quote

Just to make sure you a) don't waste time and effort and b) get at least the one-in-all pack going, I woudl advise yopu to ignore CUP completely. It is outdated and superseded by BAT. BAT is the only mega pack here on SAS that's being serviced and still developed and supported.
VP Modpack is something different and more for the custom tailor... not sure if that's for you right away, given your story with modpacks?

Yeah, as I said: you only need BAT (and maybe VP Modpack), but for sure not CUP.

If your sole interest is WW2 then go for VP-Modpack (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50919.0.html). It comes with all 3D updates/upgrades and the terrain repaints you are after. A superbly crafted super-mod by master vpmedia. Check also out the optional JETWAR (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,58461.0.html) addon.

If you like all eras of aviation from WW1 to modern jets and helos, then B.A.T. (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,264.0.html) is the right choice. It comes with an equally impressive WW2 module (World at War) and a ton of maps. It is a huge download but it comes with everything IL-2 has to offer.

Both super mod-packs are supported here at SAS so you will get help if you need it.

Once you are set, share your conf.ini here so that experts can have a look and recommend optimal settings.

(whoops vampire beat me to it ;D)

I am not an expert for sure ... still making questions here in the forum and learning for mods etc (I also like older versions as DBW  ;))

but what i can say as a not expert user, if you use vpmodpack or bat you already have all the mods you need. Well, in my opinion you need to add the whistler "NG-mods" and "DaveB Tiger sound" and have everything you could dream  :) .

But I think I can say the as important as the modpacks are, and maybe more important for visual effects:
- conf.ini settings
- nvidia settings
- sweetfx

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, they are much appreciated. I'm in the process of building all 3 versions, so that I can decide which one is best suited to me. Will report back when finished. Again, thank you all.

Update. Got CUP & BAT versions running perfectly. Lost patience with the VP version. Does anybody know where I can get some good dogfight maps from? As I stated earlier, a group of us fly on Sundays, on a server I set up on one of my computers. When I get all the chaps "up and running" it would be splendid to be able to offer then something new for our weekly dust-ups! Any suggestion will be gratefuly received. Oh yes, my CONF.INI. Suggestions for both CAP and BAT would be very nice. Just one small problem; the native resolution on my moniter is 1920 x 1080 but if I try to run either of the games any higher, even by ammending the conf.ini, the game crashes.  any suggestions? Thank you.

Great you got everything running :)

However, I think you still missed the message where everyone says : CUP is the three years outdated predecessor of BAT.

It's a bit like insisting to make a fresh install of Windows XP...

as for conf.ini, the BAT master thread even contains an explanatory conf.ini
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,53691.0.html
Title: Re: Introduction
Post by: whistler on February 24, 2019, 01:11:28 AM
That's right. If you have B.A.T. you no longer want CUP. Delete it.

IL-2 should not run from your Windows "Program Files" folder. Move your games to C:\GAMES\IL-2\ in example. This probably solves the problem you have setting the right resolution. Make also sure your conf.ini is not set to read-only. Follow the link provided by vampire_pilot to get good conf.ini settings.

And remember, B.A.T. is being developed as an offline super-mod. Some parts may not play well online. Take anything working in multi-play as a bonus. Don't bother asking about online compatibility, B.A.T. is not meant for online play.

Have fun ;)

One step at a time Whistler, one step at a time !! This is a major operation for me, with a lot to take in, and understand (or try to). Having been retired for 3 years, some days I don't know whether it's Tuesday, or King's Cross station.!! Your comment about CUP illustrates to me just how long I've been out of the loop, so to speak. A massive upgrade like CUP, and already it's 3 years old. Anyway, I'll get back here once I get BAT up and running. Thanks to all.

OK, so BAT is up and running. Just one problem, I'm getting abysmal frame rates.

Windows Pro 64bit SP!
AMD Phenom II Black 6 1090T
32 Gig DDR3 @ 803 MHz RAM
Gigabyte GA-990X Gaming MB
Twin Nvidia GTX 970 vid cards

Sat on the ground, in cockpit, I'm only getting 10 - 15 fps. With my specs I don't think I'm being unreasonable in expecting a bit more than that. I've spent days reading through the forums, trying every suggestion I could find regarding tweaking the config file, but nothing seems to give any improvement. If anybody has anymore suggestions as to what else I can try, I would be very much obliged. Thank you in advance. P.S. Game is installed in separate folder, and not in Program files.

BAT WAW tends to show FPS issues, especially on some missions where lots of actors are active at the same time.
We call it the "Java Wall".
Nothing particular you can do if you happen to hit it and to make matters worse, the dreaded "Java Wall" doesn't kick in at the same time for everyone, and when it does, it's severity can range from "single digit frame rates" to "barely noticeable".

Anyway, stand by for BAT 3.6, it'll hold a nice surprise for you ;)

Question:

Size doesn't matter.
Your folder is such big because of all the skins. They don't matter at all.
Actually DBW and UP3 were the first games where plane slots have been limited due to the Java Wall.
That's why some previously separated slots got merged, e.g. on the 109 slots you will find the 109 K-6 and K-14 as separate slots in UP3, but not in DBW (where they are loadout options of the K-4 instead).
Reason was that DBW was supposed to be a mod-friendly offliner version of UP3 and as such, it should have a couple of slots free for user-selectable mod planes.

Now compare the number of planes in DBW to the number of planes in BAT WAW and you see why the Java Wall kicks in so badly on BAT.

Anyway... wait for BAT 3.6 ;)

Danke Mike,
