The F-14's wing sweep can be varied between 20° and 68° in flight, and can be automatically controlled by the Central Air Data Computer, which maintains wing sweep at the optimum lift-to-drag ratio as the Mach number varies; pilots can manually override the system if desired. When parked, the wings can be "overswept" to 75° to overlap the horizontal stabilizers to save deck space aboard carriers. In an emergency, the F-14 can land with the wings fully swept to 68°, although this presents a significant safety hazard due to greatly increased stall speed. Such an aircraft would typically be diverted from an aircraft carrier to a land base if an incident did occur. The F-14 has flown and landed safely with an asymmetrical wing-sweep on an aircraft carrier during testing; this capability could be used in emergencies. The wing pivot points were significantly spaced far apart. This had two benefits. The first was that weaponry could be fitted on a pylon on the fixed wing glove, liberating the wings from having swiveling pylons fitted, a feature which had proven to add significant drag on the F-111B. Since less of the total lifting area was variable, the centre of lift moved less as the wings moved reducing trim drag at high speed. When the wing was swept back, its thickness-to-chord-ratio decreased which allowed the aircraft to satisfy the mach 2.4 top speed required by the U.S. Navy. The body of the aircraft contributed significantly to overall lift and so the Tomcat possessed a lower wing loading than its wing area would suggest. When carrying 4 Phoenix missiles or other heavy stores between the engines this advantage was lost and maneuverability was reduced in those configurations.
Ailerons are not fitted, with roll control being provided by wing-mounted spoilers at low speed (which are disabled if the sweep angle exceeds 57°), and by differential operation of the all-moving tailerons at high speed. Full-span slats and flaps are used to increase lift both for landing and combat, with slats being set at 17° for landing and 7° for combat, while flaps are set at 35° for landing and 10° for combat. An air bag filled up the space occupied by the swept-back wing when the wing was in the forward position and a flexible fairing on top of the wing smoothed out the shape transition between the fuselage and top wing area. The twin tail layout helps in maneuvers at high angle of attack (AoA) while reducing the height of the aircraft to fit within the limited roof clearance of hangars aboard aircraft carriers. Two triangular shaped retractable surfaces, called glove vanes, were originally mounted in the forward part of the wing glove, and could be automatically extended by the flight control system at high Mach numbers. They were used to generate additional lift (force) ahead of the aircraft's center of gravity, thus helping to compensate for the nose-down pitching tendencies at supersonic speeds. Automatically deployed at above Mach 1.4, they allowed the F-14 to pull 7.5 g at Mach 2 and could be manually extended with wings swept full aft. They were later disabled, however, owing to their additional weight and complexity. The air brakes consist of top-and-bottom extendable surfaces at the rearmost portion of the fuselage, between the engine nacelles. The bottom surface is split into left and right halves, the tailhook hangs between the two halves, an arrangement sometimes called the "castor tail".
The F-14 began replacing the F-4 Phantom II in U.S. Navy service starting in September 1974 with squadrons VF-1 "Wolfpack" and VF-2 "Bounty Hunters" aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and participated in the American withdrawal from Saigon. The F-14 had its first kills in U.S. Navy service on 19 August 1981 over the Gulf of Sidra in what is known as the Gulf of Sidra incident. In that engagement, two F-14s from VF-41 Black Aces were engaged by two Libyan Su-22 "Fitters". The F-14s evaded the short range heat seeking AA-2 "Atoll" missile and returned fire, downing both Libyan aircraft. U.S. Navy F-14s once again were pitted against Libyan aircraft on 4 January 1989, when two F-14s from VF-32 shot down two Libyan MiG-23 "Floggers" over the Gulf of Sidra in a second Gulf of Sidra incident.
Its first sustained combat use was as a photo reconnaissance platform. The Tomcat was selected to inherit the reconnaissance mission upon the departure of the dedicated RA-5C Vigilante and RF-8G Crusaders from the fleet. A large pod called the Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS) was developed and fielded on the Tomcat in 1981. With the retirement of the last RF-8G Crusaders in 1982, TARPS F-14s became the U.S. Navy's primary tactical reconnaissance system. One of two Tomcat squadrons per airwing was designated as a TARPS unit and received 3 TARPS capable aircraft and training for 4 TARPS aircrews.

F-14A
The F-14A was the initial two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor fighter variant for the U.S. Navy. It first flew on 21 December 1970. The first 12 F-14As were prototype versions (sometimes called YF-14As). Modifications late in its service life added precision strike munitions to its armament. The U.S. Navy received 478 F-14A aircraft and 79 were received by Iran. The final 102 F-14As were delivered with improved Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-414A engines. Additionally, an 80th F-14A was manufactured for Iran, but was delivered to the U.S. Navy.

IRIAF
The sole foreign customer for the Tomcat was the Imperial Iranian Air Force, during the reign of the last Shah (King) of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In the early 1970s, the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) was searching for an advanced fighter, specifically one capable of intercepting Soviet MiG-25 reconnaissance flights. After a visit of U.S. President Richard Nixon to Iran in 1972, during which Iran was offered the latest in American military technology, the IIAF narrowed its choice between the F-14 Tomcat or the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. Grumman Corporation arranged a competitive demonstration of the Eagle against the Tomcat before the Shah, and in January 1974, Iran ordered 30 F-14s and 424 AIM-54 Phoenix missiles.

F-14B
The F-14 received its first of many major upgrades in March 1987 with the F-14A Plus (or F-14A+). The F-14A's TF30 engine was replaced with the improved GE F110-GE-400 engine. The F-14A+ also received the state-of-the-art ALR-67 Radar Homing and Warning (RHAW) system. Much of the avionics, as well as, the AWG-9 radar were retained. The F-14A+ was later redesignated F-14B on 1 May 1991. A total of 38 new aircraft were manufactured and 48 F-14A were upgraded into B variants.
The TF30 had been plagued from the start with susceptibility to compressor stalls at high AoA and during rapid throttle transients or above 30,000 ft (9,100 m). The F110-GE-400 engine provided a significant increase in thrust, producing 23,400 lbf (104 kN) with afterburner at sea level, which rose to 30,200 lbf (134 kN) at Mach 0.9.[85] The increased thrust gave the Tomcat a better than 1:1 thrust-to-weight ratio at low fuel quantities. The basic engine thrust without afterburner was powerful enough for carrier launches, further increasing safety. Another benefit was allowing the Tomcat to cruise comfortably above 30,000 ft (9,100 m), which increased its range and survivability. The F-14B arrived in time to participate in Desert Storm.
In the late 1990s, 67 F-14Bs were upgraded to extend airframe life and improve offensive and defensive avionics systems. The modified aircraft became known as F-14B Upgrade, informally referred to as "Bombcat".

F-14D
The final variant of the F-14 was the F-14D Super Tomcat. The F-14D variant was first delivered in 1991. The original TF-30 engines were replaced with General Electric F110-400 engines, similar to the F-14B. The F-14D also included newer digital avionics systems including a glass cockpit and replaced the AWG-9 with the newer AN/APG-71 radar. Other systems included the Airborne Self Protection Jammer (ASPJ), Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS), SJU-17(V) Naval Aircrew Common Ejection Seats (NACES), and Infra-red search and track (IRST).
The GE F110-400 engine provided increased thrust and additional endurance to extend range or to stay on station much longer. In the overland attack role this gave the F-14D 60 percent more striking range or one-third more time on station. The Rate of climb was increased by 61 percent. The F110's increased thrust allowed almost all carrier launches to be made in military (dry) power. While this did result in fuel savings, the main reason not to use afterburner during carrier launches was that if an engine failed the F110's thrust in full afterburner would produce a yawing moment too abruptly for the pilot to correct. Thus the launch of an F-14D with afterburner was rare, while the F-14A required full afterburner unless very lightly loaded.
Although the F-14D was to be the definitive version of the Tomcat, not all fleet units received the D variant. In 1989, Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney refused to approve the purchase of any more F-14D model aircraft for $50 million each and pushed for a $25 million modernization of the F-14 fleet instead. Congress decided not to shut production down and funded 55 aircraft as part of a compromise. A total of 37 new aircraft were completed, and 18 F-14A models were upgraded to D-models, designated F-14D(R) for a rebuild. An upgrade to the F-14D's computer software to allow AIM-120 AMRAAM missile capability was planned but was later terminated.
While upgrades had kept the F-14 competitive with modern fighter aircraft technology, Cheney called the F-14 1960s technology. Despite an appeal from the Secretary of the Navy for at least 132 F-14Ds and some aggressive proposals from Grumman for a replacement,[88] Cheney planned to replace the F-14 with a fighter that was not manufactured by Grumman. Cheney called the F-14 a "jobs program", and when the F-14 was canceled, an estimated 80,000 jobs of Grumman employees, subcontractors, or support personnel were affected. Starting in 2005, some F-14Ds received the ROVER III upgrade.

Only thing I did was add in the latest wepons pack generation 2016 and the latest engine mod. 2.8.11;both from the installation in post 1. Any ideas here?

I experience problems with carrier take offs with external droptank loadouts. The gear seems not able to with stand the stress, it always breaks. Mostly nose gear. It seems not critical with loadouts without the tanks....
Anyone else has this issue?

For me plenty of nose up trim does the trick. But the poor AI still hasn’t figured it out yet. They get off the beck ok but then settle into the water. My o’ my when will they learn?

BAT 3.5,  with the correct EngMod version.

My AIs take off just fine.....
But my player take-offs on Nimitz in 2 out of 3 cases end with broken gear, even without tanks.  100% with tanks.

Edit:
Full aft trim on take off definitely helps, now the take offs without tanks are going okay!

Hey, guys! I still cannot move the smile from my face!!! 3D Model is great! But, I have few questions (sorry, everyone is the critics), and possible bug. So, here it is... I had this cockpit. These two HD displays, are they functional? HUD has only this reticle. Is it correct, or something I missing in my game? Analog gouges works fine.

I try to reproduce same situation with MiG-21, F-4, and F-5. Nope! That's happen only with F-14. And more, there's nothing in log. Here's screenshot (video would be more funny :D )

2. this is a problem on your end. in my BAT3.5 this effect is working normally. Be sure you have all the necessary EngineMod stuff correctly in place.

I'm a bit disappointed because of cockpit, but hey, is almost 20 yo game engine, we can't get everything, and surely it will not stop me to fly this bird 8) .

About effect (I did not mention that I'm using the 4.12.2+SAS 5.30+JET ERA), I have SAS Engine MOD 2.8.11 w already, but you're right about problem on my end. My old mule with AMD core cannot get things like that, it's a graphic driver issue. New drivers solve the problem.

by the way, by now I found it the most pleasurable experience to set "Realistic Landings" to OFF when operating from a carrier. Otherwise the whole gear damage thing is too much of a hassle for me

This difficulty setting basically makes your gear indestructible is all...

HI

I have had no problems with catapult launches from the Nimitz or the French Carriers.Realistic settings.
1) Extend wings
2)full flaps down
3) Slight trim up
3)Full afterburner 110%
4) Activate catapult and pulling back on stick( Failure to get nose up quickly results in nose gear damage)

Load: 100% fuel 2  tanks, 4 x AIM 9L ,4 x AIM7M

Carriers at 32 kph no wind.

Tested with AI no problems. Adjust catapult power in STD folder.

A long time ago I got all excited when the F4U Corsair was put into Il-2. I was then all excited when the F-4 Phantom was introduced. This plane exceeds the excitement of both those planes put together!! Thank you so much for this new plane.

Before I go further let me say I've only been testing the F-14B over the South Vietnam MissionBug map. Aircraft weight: 100% fuel; no ordnance except "Default." Test altitudes: 2,000' ASL to 10,000' ASL. Speed range: Mach .70 IAS to Mach 1.4 IAS (ASI on panel).

Has anyone noticed control surface problems? I'm experiencing these phenomenon:

1/ Unintended rolling. At ~Mach .70 and above you roll left with full stick throw, pause until the plane rolls level and centre the stick; the plane continues to roll left a little slower. You then move the stick to the right - not all the way - to stop the roll and suddenly the plane is rolling right rapidly. I'll mention here that this tendency seems a tad random because I have moved the stick to the right past centre as the plane rolls level and the roll stopped but, sometimes, the plane then does the roll to the right. Looking from an outside view I notice the horizontal stabilizers, acting as elevons, seem to move too far and, again sometimes, the spoilers stay out. Both these events lead to the rolling.

2/ Lack of down pitch. There seems to be a large amount of down trim needed. The Input board shows my Elevator Trim as running about 55%-65% just to keep some semblance of level. When I'm flying level and pitch down the horizontal stabilizers go just a little bit down and the plane does a slow nose-down pitch. There then comes a moment when the plane ceases to pitch further down as though the horizontal stabilizers have leveled off. This I can live with if that's the nature of the beast but, if I'm doing something wrong I'd like to fix it.

Again, my heartfelt thanks for this great addition to this simulator.

This is great! I have BAT, what exactly do i install? Having bat, i think I already have a few of these mods installed but i'm not sure exactly what. I've also never installed a single plane or a single mod so help on that would be appreciated.

Hi, did install the latest engine mod but still does it. If older classfiles, is there a way to find out which mod is conflicting with?

I have already made screenshots with the mod F 14 installed, but now I meet a funny problem, I can not do any screenshot without having a CTD.
If I delete F 14 I can redo screenshot.
If I reinstall F 14 a screenshot drives the CTD.

Hello, I'm having some trouble running this mod. The game loads fine, and I can see the plane in QMB, but when I try to actually load into the mission, it gets to 100% and then my game crashes. My log is at the bottom of the post, it might indicate the cause.

TY for your time, and I'm excited to see this plane make it into IL-2 in such high fidelity.

Hello all,

I'm having some issues with this mod. When I make a mission in QMB and try to start, it loads to 100% and then crashes. My log is below. TY for your time and for this mod.

Engine mod is not updated correctly to current required version or conflicted with old incompatible classfiles.

Scratch that, it was a class conflict with the old weapons pack mod. It's fixed now, just had to delete some old class files.

The F14 is non flyable during landings. It rolls then crashes at low speeds with wheels down.  :(

 Having a similar problem on landings. AI flights ( F-14s ) , extra F-14s crash and explode on takeoff. No problem F-4s or other mods with extra flights. Using 4.12.2m .

Retraction!  When I use the normal in flight view to land, no problems. Tried several times, no problem. When I zoomed in ( F-1  view key ), landings with flip overs , broken gears etc. No problem with landings  F-1 views with other aircraft mods.

The F-14 is relatively tricky to handle on approach but landing on land is absolutely manageable for me (that refers to the latest BAT version 3.5 which comes with the latest Engine Mod version... )

Watch your speed, descent and angle. Don't come in dropping like a stalling stone because you insist on being too slow. If I can do it, you can do it. Raising pilot view to up most position on approach is advisable.

As for carrier take off damage - just deactivate realistic landings in difficulty settings for this type of mission.

AI can take off and land, no problem. If they crash for you something's probably wrong with your install environment.

Nope this mod not ready for prime time. Tried everything. Even at high speed the F14 bump turns. Landing impossible using every method including using trim. Wasted a whole day on this time to move on. (BAT Linebacker and all other planes work without issue).

I loaded the F-14D today and on this occasion there was no CTD using the default load out, the aircraft loaded with cockpit showing in the mission. o_O

This was okay with some load outs, however, selecting others gave the CTD again. :o

As mentioned before all the advised dependencies and patches for them where already there for the first test and have not changed, yet we have different results, not sure what is going on.

There should not be any problem class files in my game because they were cleaned out previously following the instructions from western.

Anyway, I do not fly much these days, certainly not in jets, however, I like to have them installed and working.

I have find st16range problem. If I play quick mission with MIG-21 (or MIG-23) and I want to shot down F-14 or F-16 or F-4 with rocket my gane crashed. If I try to shot down Mirage or B-52 or other plant  all is ok.

I have newest weapeon pack (with old packs this same problem - I have backups) and other files.

It's not weapon pack. All planes with RWR features have this problem. When enemy MiG-21 will try shot down you F-14, game will crash too.

Looks like some overlapping mod installation issue.
The missing link is from western's "Guided Missiles" mod, but both files involved are part of that mod so there must be one other mod overriding the base "Missile" class with an outdated version.
The best person to shed light on this is probably western himself, as he created these classes.

The last CTD issue for me would happen if I used a load out that has fuel tanks. o_O

I have not had time to investigate over the last few days but the above was following what was then the very latest engine mod update to 2.8.14w_full_20190304. ;)

Tried to install it in the BAT mod folder and without BAT, still crashes at 60%.

Almost certainly a mismatch between your air.ini and the a/c you have put in your game.

Check folders. Check if you used the air.ini lines from the first post in this thread. Check if you DELETED another a/c when you installed this one.

So far, this baby works in BAT, but unfortunately it isn't starting inside the cockpit. Just outside the map and I can't control the plane at all.

I am having a problem with the aircraft freezing up while turning. The other airplanes keep flying normally, however the F-14 is stuck in place until i ease up on the elevator. At lower speeds I can maneuver the plane as much as I want - spins, snap rolls, you name it....
My guess is that the game isn't able to process the high amount of g-forces??? Its really weird  - I have no other issues with the plane otherwise.
Is anyone else having this issue?

The plane itself is fantastic but the flight models are a bit weird.

it's really fast althought it bleeds speed like it's nothing when turning

also for some reasons i'm having a lot of trouble pushing the nose down it just takes forever and i often find myself rolling 180° and just pulling back on the stick

it also like to wobble a lot when pitching and gain a lot of momentum when rolling unless you're VERY gentle with the stick

overall it's unlike any other plane in the game, modded or not and it kind of put me off at first, it definetly takes some time to learn and i'm not sure if the flight model is bugged or something but hey i've never flown a real plane in my entire life, let alone a variable geometry U.S jet fighter like the tomcat so who am i to say the flight model needs work :)






EDIT: ok after spending some more time with this plane i've noticed a couple of things that made my suspicions about buggy flight models grow, and look i may be talking complete BS but just hear me out

basically the faster the plane goes the more positive G it pulls, to the the point that it pulls 6 G with default Trim and neutral pitch and it can pull 10+ G with maximum negative pitch but for some reason it can only pull 2 negative G no matter the speed i've also noticed that using the rudder causes the plane to roll way faster than in should


i''ve been using the F14 included in BAT 3.6 Blitz so i'm quite confident there's no installation error or anything

I've got a problem with this mod. IL2 runs normally, but I can't fly the F-14. I spawn outside the the plane, if I press outside view I can see my aircraft, but can't control it. Bots have no problem.
I downloaded all required mods, and I have no idea what's wrong. I did everything I was supposed to do, in air.ini, plane.prop etc.
Please help, because I'm new to modding.

My game needed DLL 2.  Then the spawn brought up the cockpit, controls work.  Now if I could stop crashing into mountains etc.

There are sounds file "Cartrige Start"wav file.(version 2.8.14 w) So I looked up "US_JetCockpitCommonMaterials" but there is also nothing I found exactly the sound I'm looking for amongst the audio files, just not in the folder with the plane then I don't know where he is...

Oh... That's one of failures in simulating F-14.

The official flight manuals are referred to implement instruments or exteriors, but about AoA Indexer --- They describe only about the relationship between "Unit" number and indication.
I cannot know in which method the "Unit" number is calculated from AoA degrees or pitch degrees.
When I'll get the correct formula how to calculate the "Unit" number in IL-2 1946 flights for F-14's AoA Indexer, I'll fix it.
Do you help me ?

Or ..... even if no knowledge about the formula itself.
Some imitated but better AoA Indexer calculation way from AoA and pitch degrees will be given, I'll implement it as an update.

Patch V1.11 is released in 1st post , only classfiles.

Change AoA units calculation in landing situations.
AoA Indicator and AoA Indexer become to behave historically.
They refer Speed + Weight , instead of Pitch or Angle-of-Attack.

But !! They are still not useful for landing in IL-2 1946.
From flightmodel and flight engine problems, this F-14 mod stalls easier than real F-14. This mod needs 10 knots or 20 knots faster speed to succeed landing.
New AoA units value doesn't consider that mod-originated speed circumstance.

the f14 is one of the more frustrating planes to land especially on a carrier because the stall speed seems to be higher than even things like the phantom. I typically trim the plane all the way up so that I don't need to pull back as much and set the flaps to 10 degrees. If you try landing with full flaps it loses speed to fast.

- Change AI Bombing procedure, still a bit buggy.
- A bit decreasing fps damage in transonic ~ supersonic speeds.

Hi Western.

I played a bit with the FM (and started work on the HUD). After looking up footage on the internet, the landing AoA is 10° of real AoA (measured from weapon boresight - the center of HUD and the aircraft reference line are depressed by 5° compared to it). After changing critical AoA in the code and Cy0_0 and Cy0_1 the plane lands, when fully loaded, at 130 kts and just around 10° AoA. Even managed to land it on the small, vietnam era carriers (I also decreased plane stability and pitch sensitivity, increased roll sensitivity - now the plane holds pitch very nicely and does not over-roll as much).


I would like to ask one thing from you - because I cannot edit or look into COD loadouts, could you rotate the wing sparrows by 45° and send me the new files?

I just noticed: The AI, when landing on a carrier, will make a perfect approach, but as it is literally about to touch down, it just launches 200 meters into the air and then lands in water infront of the carrier. Anyone got any clue what might be causing this?

I already noticed the ai will freely land as many phantoms/furies/intruders as it wants, but the f14 doesn't work with it for some reason. You seem to be misunderstanding. I am not trying to copy what the AI does. I am trying to fix the AI landing behaviour. And no, landing on an actual runway does not change anything, except that when it does eventually touch down, it's still on a landing strip, still some 500 meters beyond where it should land. MiG-23 is even worse off, it lands some 1500 m further down the runway than it should.

Also the plane does not lose speed on my end ;) because I am in process of (also) fixing the FM. But it will take a lot of time, got more mods I work on, not to mention currently having more pressing issues than games :)) but it will give in. Eventually :))

Here are the changes I did to make player landings possible and not a nightmare. With these you can land comfortably a fully loaded tomcat at 150 kts. 130kts if you're low on fuel.

For now today's patch feels enough easy landing with low speed ; even a bit higher than historical.
.fmd parameters are dynamic calculating and changing in java with wing sweep and consistency check will be newly needed with .fmd edit. It's hard work and not near future.

did the fm get fixed? Last I played you have to be going way too fast to land successfully or else you stall. And if you land on the carrier too fast the wire will just snap you anyway.

Unfortunately Side pylon 3d models are completely merged into the main body part "CF_D0.msh" , and total CF polygon rebuild is needed to edit the pylon shape, or making pylon models switch-able for each carrying missile types "AIM-54 ? / -7 ? / -9 ?" as historical.
I'll try it, but need months instead of weeks.

Don't worry, the RIO does it for you


meaning
it's as simplified as all the other jets in IL-2
just aim your aircraft in the general direction of the enemy, press brake button until the missile is engaged - and launch (given you have a positive tone)

It's work for AIM-9, but not work for AIM-7. Aim-7 has a radar homing head, so it needs a radar

Are there experts out there who can pls tell me how to fly this bird properly in BAT 4.1!? For me it reports "Stall" almost all of the time and it handles like a brick. Sure I'm doing sth. wrong. No Airbrakes extended though, it's what I checked first. Thx for some advise.  :-[

Step 1, turn off all realism FM settings on the first realism page.

That is advise that goes for all the modern jets where FM mostly is handled by java, not the usual FM methods.

I have 1 error with this mod:
Internal error: 3do/arms/AIM9D_gn16/Ordenance1.mat is empty.
PS: v 4.12.2 SAS modact 5.30 with all requirement instaled for this plane.

How can I keep the plane flying level when using the laser view? I tried level stabilizer before entering lazer view but it does not seem to hold. If I try to engage autopilot in lazer view I can't move the targeter. Any help would be appreciated.

were you referring to the 'click' toggles on the interface?..or something / realism settings im missing?
and if this is the right area - what all do i need to 'turn off' to allow the newer /modern jets (with JAVA FM) to fly as designed?

I am new to modding but i have the VPMODPACK and the jetwar addon working, and im thinking of adding the F-14 , but it didnt work. Any tips?
when i fly it , it jumps to an outside view and if i press F2 i can see the tomcat but i cant control it

You'll need to update the Engine Mod as the VP modpack is a bit out of date

Hello I've have to ask but what happen to the refueling probe for the F-14A/B/D no matter what i do using single key hotkeys like "U" or "ALT U" etc but no refueling device deployed so what happen was it a code problem or a physics issue? Thankyou.

Actually recently got back to it, I'm currently trying to display contacts on the TID. Having some trouble getting the radar to scan properly. Plan is to have it use actual radar return simulation and then use it to build/update track files.

It works, somehow:

It's not very reliable however, if you are turning too fast or the target is moving too fast, it will "escape" its track file and clutter the screen with outdated contacts. Mainly because now it's scanning +-65° in 4 bars.
Correct modes would be:
65°, 8 bars - 13 second refresh rate
40°, 2 bars - 2 second refresh rate
20°, 4 bars - 2 second refresh rate
10°, 1 bar - 0.25 second refresh rate
the faster the refresh rate, the less possibility for error
(in reality there's also the option of RIO wizardry of manually setting those instead of using pre-sets)
