Title: BAT setup (installer) won't work
Post by: NobleNerd on January 04, 2018, 01:24:36 AM
I ran the torrent for BAT and then tried to run the setup, but it says my PC can't run the application.

Really frustrating. Over 2 hours for the download and the final step doesn't work...

You are an Admin on your own PC, right? Or arn't you?

Fist provide some serious information, like a screenshot of the message itself, or there can't be any help.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm an admin on my own PC, and I even selected "run as administrator" at one point, but still the same thing.

I'm not much of a tech person... I have an Alienware and bought IL-2 1946 on Steam. It had been handling mods like HSFX just fine, and I decided to wipe the game and reinstall it to try out BAT. As I said, the torrent worked fine, but now the setup application just won't work.

All it says is to "contact the software publisher," so... here I am. :/

Is you Steam game folder (IL-2 1946 installed folder) is under c:\Program Files\ or c:\Program Files (x86)\ ?

Program Files, I believe.

However, I moved the entirety of Steam to the much larger D: Data. That's where my main IL-2 folder is.

Maybe this is the problem: every time I try to download the installer, my computer gives me a "threats found" warning and then the application appears as 0kb. Any way past this?

Your PC's Anti-Virus protect application may work blocking unknown new ".exe" files downloaded / installed.

Open the Anti-Virus application's launcher -- sand box page, recover moved BAT installer exe file.

This sounds familiar with using Windows 10.  When you try to execute the installer file, Windows 10 does not recognize it as a legitimate file.  When this occurs, there is a small button on the warning screen that allows you to continue, something like "run anyway." The installer will continue after you click this button.

FYI - I'm not next to my gaming PC so I am unable to bring up a screen shot of it.

Okay, this is odd... I checked the threat history and they were titled "Trojans." Is the download itself corrupted?

If not, how do I bypass Windows Defender to download it? Where's the "sand box" page?

JM -  see my post above

It's not that simple, I'm afraid... No "run anyway" button.

I'm concerned about it classifying a file within the download as a Trojan. It's labeling it as a severe threat.

JM - I have done this, there is something on the warning screen that allows you to proceed.  This will happen for each executable file associated with BAT.  This means that Windows will identify the file for the BAT install and each of its updates as a threat. Run a virus check using a anti-virus program other than Defender.  I have Mcafee and all of the files downloaded through this site have been scanned prior to being completely downloaded and none have been identified as being a threat but when I opened them they all were identified as a threat by Windows Defender.  Secondly, I routinely run a scan of my system and no threats have been identified since I installed BAT and all of its updates.

Windows Defender maybe different to other 3rd party anti-viruses ..... no "Run Anyway" button , no Sand-box, no Isolation Chest.

Help menu and choose "Send sample to Microsoft" (I don't know its correct display text in English) and .... wait some days .... MS will make a new virus database to ignore BAT installer.

Or , in your own risk ....
Stop Windows Defender service by Task Manager only in minutes of downloading and executing BAT installer.

JM - can you post a picture of the warning screen?  Also see if there is a definition update for defender.

This is what Antivirus programs see in BAT Installer:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/18370ce26ca370cdffbb1caecbfc768b1d6b2b4f5e979b9fbe9258592eeedb7b/analysis/1515132730/

2 false positives, not too surprising for an NSIS installer file: One time a vietnamese (sic!) antivirus application doesn't recognized the compression algorithms used in the installer, and one time McAfee (sic! that McAfee that lets through 99% of viruses...) thinks it'd be ransomware.
No one thinks there'd be a trojan in that file.
To be sure, I just put the file on our SAS Gameserver, where Windows Defender is running and the Server never saw any bit of BAT before.
Windows Defender says the file is safe. Microsoft Smartscreen says so too.

I tell you what I think: Either the thread starter runs a PC where Windows Defender has not been updated during the past few years, or he's just trying to pull us a leg.

Cheers!
Mike

On my Pc, it's possible to go to windows Defender's settings and turn it off, or at least turn off the feature that prevents you from running your program. On my PC I also had to adjust the Trend Micro Anti-virus on it by making the BAT installer an "exception".

Now that both Windows Defender and Trendmicro don't see anything wrong with the BAT installer (talking about the installer for BAT 1.0 here), there's nothing much needed to do but update your Antivirus software, since that's what could cause false alerts if your signatures are outdated.

Cheers!
