Title: O-1 Bird Dog
Post by: Ont_R on July 13, 2016, 12:30:07 PM
This is the Alphasim O-1F Bird Dog model that was released to us sometime ago so all credit for this model goes to the original creator I merely adapted it to work in game. Also a big thanks to

Flakiten, melissa, and Greif11 for the original L-5 as well as to SAS~Skipper for the Bird Dog - Cocaine Smuggler this is based on. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,38118.0.html

As with my other mods cut and paste the original Cessna Bird Dog folder to a safe location and drop this one in it's place or if you're using CUP simply place this in your #WAW folder and it

should work as there were no changes made to the air.ini or skins folder. Tested in 4.12.2 with CUP.

I've included two additional skins the first is for an O-1D of the 19th TASS one of the first USAF Bird Dogs to deploy to Vietnam in July 1963.

The second is for Major Boung's O-1A which he used to escape Vietnam with his wife and five children. Major Boung is credited with making the first landing by an O-1 on an aircraft carrier, landing on USS Midway on 30th April 1975.

Float Version based on the L-5 Stinson float. Thanks again to Flakiten, melissa, and Greif11 for the original L-5 and as with my other mods cut and paste the original L-5 Stinson float  folder to a safe location and drop this one in it's place. No change to the air.ini but skins use the " L-5_STOL-Float " folder. Tested in 4.12.2 with CUP.

Hello.

412.2 MA 5.3 in QMB i encounter the same problem as  torontotawa.

Seems good if i only change 3do,Presets,Samples, in the  Bird Dog - Cocaine Smuggler .

Just a test i'm not a modder. :-|

I had the dreaded grey horizon with no cockpit at first, but by removing the folder "Sentinel" from the cockpit folder and inserting the pit from the original all works perfectly. Great to have this little bird, thank you. The skins are really attractive.
PS I must be a bit slow, because all I really needed to do was to rename the "Sentinel" folder as "BirdDog"!

Thanks all for your kind words. They are greatly appreciated and I'm glad you like it.  :)

@ Torontotawa. Not sure what would cause that as I've flown this in just about every map in my QMB without issue. Are you using 4.12.2 or another version ?

@ Taskf53 and oldschoolie. Glad you got it working and I'll see if I can figure out what the issue is and post an update if I find it.

Cheers and thanks again,

Ont_R

P.s. Thanks for the vids Mick ;)

The Bird Dog is nice for Korea and Vietnam missions. It would be fine to have a Piper L-4 Grasshopper as well for WW2 missions.
I mean a "real" Grasshopper, not a franken.

Not sure what to tell you torontotawa  :-[

I have basically all that wrapped up in the CUP package and no issues on my end. I'll keep poking around and see if there's something I missed though.

Thanks for taking the time to point this out to me by the way.

Cheers,

Thank you, Ont_R
I'm probably the one who does something wrong, try to do all the steps correctly, see if I get it.
Thanks for your time.  ;D ;D

Found wheels of my Fi-156 have 4 x new skins, literally... when O-1's file present.
412.2 SAS modact530. Not sure if I have a wheels mod active or not on this bird. Seems stock.
If you don't have this issue in CUP, then perhaps 'wheelsmod' hides it.

Hi Hubberranz,

I just went through all my Fi-156's with the O-1 file present and all the wheels appear normal in CUP. So I'd say there's a mod conflict somewhere. I'll put the O-1 into my stock 4.12.2/5.30 and see if I get the same effect as you and get back to you with my findings.

Thanks for pointing this issue out. :)

Cheers,

Ont_R

Well well. I have the same weird wheels, but the Fi156U is normal.  Hope there is a fix as the O-1 is a great little bird.
Title: Re: O-1 Bird Dog
Post by: Hubberranz on July 28, 2016, 08:42:30 PM
I can confirm that when I apply wheelsmod to Fi-156, wheels of fi-156 return to normal. Mat points to Plane\Textures\217.tga in that mod.
So the original Texture name for Fi-156's wheels must be used by O-1: 3do\Plane\Textures\Gear.tga* = is now floats textures in both O-1 files.
"--Gear.tga" does repair fi-156 wheels too, this time to regular stock 'can' looking wheels. Birdod survives: defaults to stock plane\textures\gear.tga; other planes need this.. ?
Land Birdog's Gear.mat leads to 3do\plane\Textures\gear.tga. So renaming that* to O1Gear.tga then adjust the name in these Mats for gear should work.

Gear.mat
[Layer0]
  TextureName ..\TEXTURES\gear.tga to  ..\TEXTURES\O1Gear.tga

not tested; both planes.   Works. Tested on seaplane + landbird. Fi-156 is OK.

Original L-5_SentinelFloat does not have a Gear.tga in Textures, at least the STOL amphibious version I used. 8)

Thanks for this useful information Hubberranz.

Here I was thinking each file was unique to each aircraft. Now that I know more than one aircraft can use the same file I'll be more careful with the use of these files and their names.
I'll do up a revision to the gear file and .tga and post an update shortly.

Cheers and thanks again,

Ont_R

Hi.
It's outside the unique file.
3do\Plane\Textures\... is common to all,
3do\Plane\Birdog file is unique to the mod, and now the mod of a mod.
Gear.tga can probably exist inside Birdog file with Gear.mat lines:
[Layer0]
  TextureName  Gear.tga

Never tried that one. Seems it would be OK.   Works. Tested on landbird +seaplane. Fi-156 OK.
Cheers   ;D

I've looked into Bird Dog - Cocaine Smuggler:
3do\Plane\Birdog\Gear.mat reads
[Layer0]
  TextureName ..\TEXTURES\gear.tga
but it' s own Textures file has none in it. So it refers to common game stuff...

Therefor U can rename Gear.tga and still share it's use, or relocate it and make it exclusive to this mod. ( ... or even relocate and change name !  :P ).
You have great skills and patience! Thank you for this much needed plane. BoB

Thanks for all your help with this Bob. It's greatly appreciated. :)

Well I did as you said by changing the file names and not that I had any troubles with Fi-156's in the first place all is fine with them. Only thing is now after the file name change I've noticed that other aircraft like the  Me321, G11 and U-2's now exibit the squared wheels. So not sure what's up with that  :(

I'll keep delving into this and see if a cure can be found for all this before I release an update.

Thanks again for your time and efforts,
Cheers,

Ont_R

Be sure you did both mods : Birdog and L-5_SentinelFloat. When your Gear.tga is put back in one of the Textures: skin-boxes on Me-321,G-1, U-2VS I can confirm.
If not that...
..wrong name then, the name you choose must be already in use? Try another name: BirdogGear.tga for instance.
I myself ' ve "relocated inside Birdog", so cannot check this right now . Presently Me-321, G-1 and U-2v have their usual default gear in my 412.
I reapplied O1Gear.tga in Textures and still the Me-321, G-1 and U-2v are stock gear and OK. I wonder what name U used and if "file" you said is the .tga ?
As said earlier, I reapplied Gear.tga in one Textures, and all four planes now wrong. Again, there are two Textures files to correct, doing just one wont do.

...some more info:
From modwheels v5.3 for G-1:
[Layer0]
  TextureName ../TEXTURES/gearII.tga
Me-321 I have not found... ( if really it is not covered by modwheels, then it will try use default gear.tga and suffer even in CUP ).
U-2.. (Russian):
[Layer0]
  TextureName ../TEXTURES/skin1ok.tga
These are not stock, but something similar updated you may have in CUP.
Have not found O1Gear.tga as 'a name already used' in Modwheels V5.3 Textures file. ( note: 'O' letter is not zero ).
Good luck !

Some help please, cannot get the O-1 to  work in VP Modpack ,IE  SAS Modact 5.3 for IL-2 4.12.2m, removed the L-5 folder for the bird dog folder, CTD %60 something missing from the O-1 Bird Dog folder which is in CUP.

Unable to help you with that steven as I don't use that modpack. Perhaps one of the other members has a solution to that for you.

It seems that the Bird Dog has no damage model. (at least I can shoot and outright fly through it). Does anyone have a version that does or did it never have one?

The L-5 does have one so I was wondering why this one does not as it seems to be derived from the L-5.
