Dear Il2 fans,
Here is the Utterly final version 2.3 of the Gilf Kebir map!!
Apologies for misleading you earlier - but this is the TRUE final version.
This one addresses the problem discussed earlier [& see "Textures" forum], which was largely solved through help from other modders.  Also I took the opportunity to improve the texture mapping in the NE part of the map - which needed extra work badly.

From my view at least, the "Gilf Kebir" map is no longer "work in progress" !

Note: regarding the previous ver 2.1 :
Version 2.1 was found to have some minor texture errors** - so had to be replaced. My apologies for that.
For 2.2, I've also added a bit more texture mapping,
so 2.2 is prettier than ver 2.1, in some places.
Also added one bump file here, to complete the set.

how to run this map:
load map and texture folders as usual
in your maps folder, add the following to the all.ini file

  Gilf_Kebir        Gilf_Kebir/load.ini

Gerhard: very pleased to hear the map runs "flawless" in 4.10/DBW.
Mick: you are right about the screenshots' green tint. I didnt notice till now.
This seems to have arisen during the FRAPS procedure. It's not present in my game.

ps As an aside, a little exercise:
See Ta183's third screenshot above, which is in map grid AS 31. 
If you are interested in the texture problem I mentioned at http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,51121.0.html, note this:
On top of the plateau, just to lower left of the 109s port wingtip, there is a small orange aura in the brown dirt - which I didnt build into the original map!  When playing my game [mod/UP 409], I see this aura here too. But if I switch from perfect to excellent mode, that orange aura will change, back to what I originally built !  [as will some other textures here - eg at lower right]. 
Of course, these alterations are no big deal at this location, but they can be annoying in other parts of the map.  Damned nuisance!  :-[
I'd be interested to know if other versions of the game show the same variability?

It is visible too in DBW 1.71.
I think it has to do with the fact that textures are rendered in a more simplified way in 'excellent' mode.
In Unlocked FMB with settings to 'perfect' the blending of textures is more subtle. And since these spots become noticable then they can easily be corrected manually.

Could you please remove the 4 holes under the keel, near the tail, because although we can see them in a lot of skins, these 4 holes never existed in real life ...  ;)

Hi fatty fin and thks for this lovely map! As Mick I enjoy so much flying over desert!
I tried to create some missions, none and scramble blue, in QMBPro (4.09) but got always the message "data file corrupt" whatever trick I used and I think am not a rookie in this respect at least.
So I wonder if somebody else has ever tried the same and with which result....

I created a fictitious campaign for my own use, using the FMB, with no problem at all ...  ;)

Sorry but I have never created none and scramble blue (or red) missions and never used the QMBPro either, so I can't help you ...  :-[

... well, in fact single missions that I made in chronological order, regarding planes, hence what I call a "campaign" ...  ;)

Hi Mick! With FMB this map works flawlessly, I did create some nice missions either starting from take off or on air but sure your ones are better conceived than mines so if you mind send this campaign I would be very glad to play it!!!

Hello Thorsten,

These FW190F2Trop look strange, with their 13 mm cowling MGs ...  :P

Since there are no Gilf Kebir campaigns, I can post mine if several guys are interested, just to pay tribute to this wonderful map, and make it alive ...  ;)

They are totally ficticious since in reality this part of the MTO saw very few combats, mainly on the Italian side I think ...

I built two campaigns, on the blue side (but it is easy to turn them in the red side):

N°1 starts with the HS123, then Bf190E 3, then E4 etc ...

N°2 starts with the FW190A 2, then A3 etc ...

Just let me know guys (and girls ...?)  8)

Hi Tom tried your missions and they work.... so a big thank to you (and Uufflakke) but I wonder what was wromng with mines....
Comparing the two different versions the only diffrence I could finf was in teh red ac: mine were british (but deisgnated as r0100 and so on of course) and yours russsian.....

OK, here are the 2 "campaigns" ...  :P

As I already said, these "campaigns" are totally fictitious ...

I built them for my own (imaginary) pleasure, to be able to fly on this beautiful Gilf Kebir map ...

So, several planes I used never flew in Africa (Whirlwind, Typhoon, BV141 etc ...)

These missions were made using my 4.09m FMB ...

So several of them won't probably load, simply because of different Class air names, or weapons differences or whatever ...  :(

If you know how to mofify a .mis file with a simple text editor, you'll be able to fly those who won't load, simply using the correct Class air, or weapons names from your air.ini or weapons.properties ...  8)

I finally gave up the idea of providing the skins I used, simply because there are too many, and it would take me ages to find them all in my (very heavy) skin folder ...

Enjoy and do whatever you want with these missions, not need to credit me if you repost them ...  ;)

Very cool looking map! It has actually inspired me to start research on my next DCG Campaign Project - The Afrika Korps Air Force. I am finishing up testing and tweaking my Kanal Front '41 - '43 Campaign using GilB57's Western Front 39-45 Maps (...which I plan to release when I feel it won't get laughed it too much).

Question - does anyone know how to add this map manually to CUP or would it be best to be patient and wait?

I have not added it to CUP but I added it to the Vp Media pack. The install was straight forward following Fatty Finns instructions and the CUP install should be the same. I tried to do a DCG campaign myself but had to abandon it due to AI crashing into the ground constantly.  I hope you have better luck!  It is a fun map.

You'd be safer creating a JSGME install into #WAW - as you 'll prob need to delete a direct entry under MAPMODS when the new update arrives!

I'm becoming a CUP newb myself - & just amazed at the fantastic world all our brilliant modders have created, in the CUP.
Being a sim pilot is hard work, though.    Much harder than my usual occupation here, as "sim plane-spotter" !

For example east africa. Territory of Italian Eritrea for cover Battle of Keren in 1941.
