Title: agracier's Casablanca finished / populated
Post by: SAS~Tom2 on July 28, 2015, 12:23:18 PM
I hope I did this halfway allright.

The map shall be fun to fly and give a glimpse of Northern Africa  not represent the area correctly to the detail, ...but it is fun to fly. Not what you see exactly one on one or 90% close but - I'd say-and thanks to agracier, gives a very good feel for the area. I like acracier's maps because of his choice of areas.

Stand by for updates, even today maybe:
I will re-use coast align, just in case and also revisit a stance of "special". I hope you have the same meditational feeling I had when flying low there.

Readme included.
You will need pretty much all objects, I built the map inside DBW 1.71 and tested it in Mod Act 5.3, notes on how to get maps working in Mod Act 5.3/ 4.12.2
# 1/10/53
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,35419.0.html

Let me know if there are bugs and errors, I mean real bugs not ugly stuff which for sure is in as well. A bug e.g. is a building on the water, obstacles on an airbase or a freak feature accidently added.

The map by no means is as artsy as Sidi Ifni >:(, and by no means as populated. If you wanna see towns and villages fast, best navigate by the map.
My choice for landlight.mat btw is the darker one, I made the brighter one default here, since I hoped most chaps prefer it this way, nothing else. ;)

If you are interested, please check the readme . ;)

Only 3-4 out of 60-80 (?) cities and villages are real FPS eater, especially Casablanca, which I did not even aim at making correct, so for the capital I simply planted what I found adds a tad volume.

The other villages hopefully make up for that. :P

Hope you enjoy.

I did not aim for "WWII only" "Jet Era only", you can fly this map with props and jets. ;)

Link, this is a first and likely will be replaced by one or more fixes and add-ons...ma_T.tga--cough.

Aside all the crap I typed here the readme really says all.

Will upload the latest version soon.  :P
Worked all night.

Many thanks for the kind word, fellas. :)
 :D

Kirby:
I think that was a sort of road plate with the river.  :-\

As for the rivers and their partial stunts, I decided to balance levelling vs. immersion. Today I fully levelled them and it looked worse, so they are ok as they are in my humble opinion as any further change there was to the dismay of the surrounding landscape no matter if on map_h or map_c.   ;)

Cheers

Quicks!

https://www.mediafire.com/download/hp5rhro52mlhr76/Quicks+for+Casablanca+-+in+QMB+folder%3B+extract+and+into+relevant+folder.rar

Hope at least the RedArmor and BlueNone are fun, spent an evening making a few starter Quicks.

Screens later!

If you have issues with FPS, try either another Quick or self built mission farer away from detailed areas or disable a few of the texture bump files. For me and my old 5 years milf rig it works. :D

Placed a few cameras in some Quicks as well.

 ;)

Sorry--update is now in post No 1 as well as here, along with the above Quicks. ;)

Like I said more screens later.

If there will be a new version, I will put it in post No 1 each time.

BTW this map looks best at 15.30-1700 or morning, but can be flown on all times.

Here's a 2nd link lol.
https://www.mediafire.com/download/r65r7r6t8gb5dbj/agracier%27s+casablanca.rar

Today I will upload a last optional file or update anmd then it's good with uploads for the time being.

Hi Thorst
I really liked one screen in the first lot of screens showing a river surrounded by undulating hills that looked more natural.  ;D
I hope it is back to that way.

Have not seen that particular object as a road but definitely as an airfield plate set.

Your map updates should all be CUP maps you know CUP-Thorsten's Map at the beginning of the drop down maps list in QMB Pro as you make them jet age as well.  ;)

Cheer Kirby

Hehe Kirby..the southern rivers to up to east of Casablanca look all ok, the northern ones are a bit spoiled but I kept it a way that allows for fun on 95% of the map.

If you compare their flaw with the initial mod I made for agracier's super Ifni, this map here hits it better and most rivers are fun to fly through even with their northern extremes.

Thanks for the kind words, O can assure you the Quicks for this map, while demanding (NO compromise for object details on coasts)-are fun. At least RedBridge and RedArmor...hehe.

Keep up your awesome commitment Kirby, I could never play in your league.  :)

Cheers

Thorst.

Hello, Tom2

Good job.

Just a question, where did you get those FAP skins on the Mig-17?

Thanks in advance.

A little afternote (you know me, it won't be the last).

Anyone seeing bumps in the coastline-speak up or pm me, I have two alternative sets of the so called map_h.tga, where I applied "coast align" in two ways.

This is a little option, only for very nitpicking pilots who saw gaps in the coastline somewhere. Readme inside, personally, I prefer the stock map_h.

Still repetitions on this map after the latest fix on page 1, but at preferred altitudes of sea level to 1000 acceptable. ;)

... many THX for this map, Tom, I'll have to try it since I was born in Casablanca, way back in the ancient times, and came to France when I was 9, but never saw a mill there though, unless my memory is betraying me, which it does, more often than not ...  :D

Just getting back to speed after some time away.

I d/l and installed this new version and it is stunning and beautiful with the new textures ... they look very different from other maps, but that makes them all the more fun to fly over.

Wonderful work.

Downloaded and installed the map in HSFX.  Game loads and map loads in the FMB, but won't save.  I assume I am missing objects.  My install has only the objects that came with HSFX and and the _tex and objects that came with  modded maps that I have installed;  I.e Marshall Islands etc.

What objects/ object packs will I need to download and install to make this map work in HSFX or any other modact version?  With the USS Ranger now available (already tested it successfully with stock maps) this is the perfect map for Operation Torch.

Did the original version of this map have stock objects and textures or did it have new objects and textures added to it as well.

Thanks.

What should I be looking for in the log?  I didn't see anything that I would recognize as an error message.

I can load the map in the FMB.  I can place ships and aircraft on the map.  I choose to save the mission.  When I try to exit the FMB I keep getting asked if I want to save the mission.  The only way I can exit the FMB is to select no when prompted to save the mission.

If you want me to post the log here, how do I do that?  The log is pretty lengthy (yes I deleted the content prior to launching the game so it would only have text from that session).

Thanks

Mailman, read here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=39780.0) which part(s) from the log to post
and how to post it. (code option!)

When you want to post all lines of the logfile use pastebin, read here how to do this:

I had selected the # and saw it was code, but wasn't sure it was correct so I opted to ask how before using it.  Thank you for explaining it.  I will probably create a new log file and look for any "error" as was shown as an example tomorrow night.

Thanks again

I have the map working.  I must say it is a beautiful map.  Since you asked to have errors pointed out I observed these three.

Just off of the coast NE of Casablanca not far from one of the transport areas there are buildings sticking out of the water away from land.

Started creating a mission with the Ranger when I noticed a couple of important Vichy airfields missing for November 1942 time frame.

The airfield 4 miles SW of Casablanca was missing; Cazes Airfield.  I have found many references (no photographs) to this airfield and Cazes is actually described in the book "Wildcats Over Casablanca" "Cazes airport, our target has a green surface and runways, with rust-covered hangars.  There was no sign of movement, but French aircraft could be observed on the ground.  The fighters were dispersed to the north, with the bombers to the east."  I also have descriptions of this airfield in "Vichy Air Force at War.

AA guns started to shoot at them so the prearranged code phrase for the Vichy putting up a defense "Batter Up" was radioed to the Ranger which replied with another prearranged code phrase "Play Ball" to commence hostilities against the Vichy.  The Wildcats commenced strafing DB-7 aircraft at Cazes and then fought a mix of Hawk 75A's & D520's over the airfield.

I tried to put runway plates in this area, but the terrain is not flat.

I could not find any refernces to Tit-Mellil airstrip except as a post war replacement for Cazes/Anfra airport.

Port Lyautey is described as having two concrete runways which the P-40's from USS Chenago to after its capture.  This field then was transformed into a Naval Air Station where the Sea Bees lengthened the runways to 6000 feet, added a seaplane ramp and facilities for blimps. There is actually a photograph of this airfield after the Sea Bees converted it into the NAS at the Hyperwar site.

Can you upload missing objects for HSFX please?

I have no idea how to upload anything to here.  A friend (long, long distance) fixed it by fixing the static.ini and I am not sure what he added.

You can pack map in your jsgmemods folder with 7zip for exmaple and upload here http://leteckaposta.cz/

Than just post link here. There will be more HSFX pilots interested I  believe too.

Hi kukulo

Pls. see the "Downloads4Mods/Maps" section at mission4today.com

I've taken the liberty of 'scuttling' the outcrop of buildings & palms offshore from Casablanca, too much of a hazard to shipping; original actors.static is included as "atlantis.static" if you'd like them back for target practice 8~)

Currently working on Port Lyautey airfield so an update is likely; will see about Camp Cazes as time permits.

Many thanks to the original authors/contributors, esp. agracier and SAS~Tom2

No need to thank me.  I didn't do anything.  It was all emmett's work finding the static.ini entries and creating a new static.ini
