History:
From 1960, the Yakovlev Design Bureau began work on a VTOL system, using the compact and lightweight Tumansky RU-19-300 turbojet engine, drafting a proposal for the Yak-104, a converted Yak-30 jet trainer with two vertically mounted Ru-19 engines between the inlet ducts of the standard Yak-30 powerplant. Work on the Yak-104 was terminated in favour of an aircraft with a single lift/cruise engine with rotating nozzles, similar to the Hawker Siddeley P.1127, which was nearing completion in England. Unable to find a suitable engine or convince the government to order the development of one the Yakovlev bureau was forced to follow a different course.
In response to a contract for the development of a single seat V/STOL fighter in 1961, Yakovlev proposed a twin engined aircraft with a large nose intake, engines in the forward fuselage and swivelling exhaust nozzles, one for each engine either side of the lower fuselage near the centre of gravity of the aircraft. The fighter version was not proceeded with but four technology demonstrators, (initially designated Izeliye V) based on the fighter studies were ordered.
Four prototypes were completed, one of which was used only for static testing. The second was used for takeoff and landing tests, including free hovering. The third incorporated improvements found in testing, including an improved autopilot which automatically selected optimal air flow for hover stability. This prototype crashed, but was later rebuilt. The fourth prototype crashed in February 1971 and was not rebuilt.
Alternative History:
Thanks to its rapid respond and ability to operate in non-airfield bases, it was favored by many front line commanders as bases point defences and extreme close air support. It have enough range and loiter time to keep situation under control until dedicated aircrafts arrived. Though this is not a good fighter and you'll find yourself in a very tight situation fencing against dedicated fighters like F-4, F-8, MiG-21, 19 or even MiG-17.

Alternative History:
Since the development of the Yak-38 was not very successful. Yak-36 design was once again re-considered and invested. Thus the new combat worthy Yak-36SMF was designed, mass-produced and put into action.
Even though the aircraft externally looks like a Harrier, but it have purely Russian Technology:
Powered by a pair over-powered Tumansky R-27-2000 that produce 5500kg dry thrust each, this aircraft can carry more oridiance and still beable to use S/VTOL. (USE Arrestor Hook Key)
Ordinance can be hang on 8 hard points with a total weight up to 2500kg, consisting of AAM, AGM, free fall bombs and droptanks. It was also fit with NR-23-6 gatling cannon.
It was fit with a slightly modified RP-22 Radar, the RP-22-N, which have limited capability to look down, shoot down (above 2500m altitude). Radar lock display are moved to the HUD to assit pilot in intercepting with air to air missiles and using gun. Locking are automatic. This upgraded version of this radar also have limited ability to scan and identify moving ground target. Use radar mode key to switch to ground attack mode.

Scan range: 30km
Lock range: 15km
Max angle horizontal: +/- 35O
Max angle elevation: +/- 15O
This aircraft featured a mini HUD for this aircraft that based on the MiG-23 layout. Use Toggle bombsight automation key to switch between different HUD mode.

Several aircrafts are also exported to many country in the world.
To use vertical take off landing:
Use your deploy refueling probe key.
When on ground, start your engines, when both engines started, deploy your refueling probe then slowing increase your throttle until the plane lift off. You can use your control surface (ailerons, rudders, elevator) to move the aircraft around. You can deploy flap to 15 degree to ensure safe transition to horizontal flight. For the latest patch, you can switch to horizontal flight when just barely lift off the ground. retract your refueling probe for horizontal flight. Notice that when transit to horizontal flight, you'll experience a sudden drop due to lack of thrust, just use maximum throttle and pull up then you'll be okay. landing gears and airbrake can be retracted before or after switching to horizontal flight, or even in between.
For landing just slow down to 400km ( don't throttle below 50%, only use your airbrake) then deploy arrestor hooks. The plane will slowly get slower until you stay still. Use your control surface to keep the plane stable and move them around, then use throttles to lower the aircraft.

Well I do have some news It works with all weapons and takeoff handling a bit tricky but do able. Done a good job will give you a whole box of brownie points.

Unfortunately i'm having issues too. I have checked all the requirements and made sure i have them in my DBW 1.71. Tried to re-download several times every pack, but still no joy, everytime i try to load the plane launching a QMB mission i get a 30% lock and i've to force-quit back to desktop.

Please post your logfile. If you have the Mi-24 installed, please disable that mod temporarily, the next patch of Mi-24 will resolve this compatibility issue. :)

I actually saw the video of this plane yesterday on youtube and wanted it right then and there, then to my surprise it's here today!! I made a bit hard vertical landing so that the main gear collapsed, but unfortunately, when trying again only my nose remained on ground and the rest of the plane sunk into ground. I looked at the _Clip hooks and noticed that _Clip08 is missing. Just add the missing _Clip08 to some mesh to avoid sinking into ground again.

Great concept plane, SAS~S3. Thanks to you after helicopter introduction, the jump jets start to storm IL2 skies!
However I've noticed some issues. I don't know if those issues are bugs or results of game limitations.
- Pilot is unable to eject while plane is standing on the ground.
- The second one is more interesting and funny. While trying to take off vertically, I increased throttle too fast and my engines became inoperational. Then, still standing on the ground, I switched to normal-fly mode (retrackted arrestor hook) and my Yak immideately got a speed more than 150 km/h (without engines and with initial speed=0!) and I rolled up to the end of the airstrip.
Game version is 4.101+DBW 1.71

The same problem as that of Narvik. Even after turning off the engines, when moving the nozzles in the horisontal mode flight - the plane starts to move at a speed of 150-200 km / h.

guys, these last two reports i think are associated with the hook issue mentioned earlier.
as for the engines failing after rapid throttle increase, this is no bug, nor a game limitation, but an implementation of real life issues. several other jets have this implemented already. it's known as compressor stall damage, and other similar factors which cause this.
as for not being able to eject while on the ground, well....who in their right mind would want to do that, anyway, lol! :D

I was able to take off, circle and land on a carrier on my first attepmt. :) Hovering over the carrier and matching its speed was difficult but it was a lot of fun.

Very expert piece of work, but it only flies without CTD if I disable the F8s I have. Also the FM is very tricky, but then I suppose the real thing was as well. Thanks.

Flies great, though I report the same thing. I do have all the required mods, but I only see Default, 2x AIM-9B and 4x AIM-9B as loadout options. The UB-32 isn't there.
I should report that other than this issue, it's a ton of fun!

I love this jet. I just went and took off and landed again from a carrier. Just to make sure I didnt just get lucky the first time. :) To me, its easier than landing anything else on a carrier. I love it. :)

Nice 3D model and FM seems realistic (close to helicos)
i have SAS modact 3.06, last Buttons, HD True Color mods installed (+L-159G and MiG-21),
BUT: i did not install SAS Engine mod and i'm still running Jet Era v1.2.
and the Yak-36 loads and flies perfectly ! (at least after some missed landings ...)
And i did not get any incompatibility with already installled Mi-24.
Hope it can help those who have not yet updated to Jet Era v1.3

i too, prefer ww2 era planes, but this is still great work, and deserves more praise and less criticism. no-one is being forced at gunpoint to download something they don't like. ;)

Thanks for the comment ;) But there is a special reason why I "precisely" choose this aircraft. It was a "technology demonstrator", a thing to prove that the USSR can build VTOL aircraft; a context that I found very similar to IL-2 modding community ;)

This happened while they are landing in a x8 speed configuration (I haven't tested other options though)
Most importantly, I CAN'T BAIL OUT WHEN I LANDED (especially if it's a crash landing and the fuel tank is smoking... yeah, I'm still practicing to land this plane, I'm successful a few times, at others, it seems that one final requirement to land her is a flat landing spot)

I've post version 1.26 at first post, added a tail hook for Carrier operation. Thus the VTOL was map to the Deploy fuel probe key. Please make your adjustment.

mate, the stock game has issues like this when playing on 8 x speed. i don't recommend this as any sort of testing benchmark.
try it with normal speed and test - don't report some issue with 8 x speed as a bug unless the same happens at normal speed. the game has many difficulties doing many things at 8 x speed, and this is no way to do testing.
the bail out problem has already been mentioned - i'm sure it will be addressed in the future. ;)

Tested it without the speed-up and the AI has a perfect, controllable landing glide speed, until they bounce from the runway and went reverse course and ditches to the sea...
Same result still... check it on Okinawa map Blue side scramble mission in QMB

Hello Eric, thank you very much for providing a low res version of this wonderfull flying machine, I am really growing to love this creation of yours even though I do not usually fly jets. 8)
Would it be possible to have the mod set for low res as default please or can the additions to the latest update be added to the low res version?
When working with FMB it is necessary to deactivate the textures mod otherwise it takes forever to plot waypoints and add detail objects for mission/campaign buliders.

Replace these 3 textures with the ones in the low-res mod version and your game will run fine without the HD texture mod :).

I just want to express my gratitude to all the modders that contributed to creating this aircraft. This is simply the best experience since the jet war came out. Not saying we didn't ever have VTOL (Lerche) but to do this in a modern jet is sort of like a revolutionary progress. It's awesome!

I can confirm. Deploy refuel device does not work in DBW 1.71 for making the VTOL work. But hey! Who needs a tail hook to land on a carrier with this bird? :) Its SO easy to land using VTOL. Just try it. If I can do it, anyone can. :)

I dont think its a problem with thier game.I think that its that S-3 made this with 4.12 and DBW works differently with some codes so some things will work in 4.12 that wont work in DBW or 4.10 modact.

I have it as (PaintScheme/skins/Yak-36S) but the templates didn't show up until I changed the format to bitmap (.bmp)
then I was able to show the Templates. Assuming you're referring to the Skin and template created By GGM. (note I have not updated to ver. 1.26, unable due to broken link)

Hello again Eric, not sure quite why but when I try to get the mod V1.26 from vertical take off to level flight the aircraft pitches forward and goes into a plummet to earth which is virtually impossible to recover from, to have any chance at all you have to be really high.
With the low res version 1.25 I think the transition is much less a drama and a really smooth transition whatever the hight.
Am I doing something wrong or did you change certain flight perameters in 1.26 that could explain this strange behaviour?
Flight tests done in modded 4.11 and 4.12.

For 4.10 users, you can use 1.25 ve cause the only difference is the tail hook.

The Tail Hook Function makes since, I mean I'm content with the choice of function for operation. I can easily land and take off Vertically. Now I'm trying it with bombs to see what differs from not having bombs.

I have my skin folder exactly the same as the air ini.The skins are in bmp formatt but they still dont show.I did however change them to 1024 size from 2048 but I have done this with other skins and never had a problem.:^(

In addition to changing them from 2048 to 1024, you'll also need to change them from 24bits to 8bits as well. a software called Bright can do this very nicely.

it's not a refueling probe, it's a vale-controlled diverted thrust that linked to the aircraft autopilot system, which control aircraft stability in VTOL mode. There are 4 points on the aircraft that mark with a yellow rectangular. :)

Eric, i feel for you, mate - the general level of incompetency throughout the last few pages, and basically failing to read what has already been stated, is astounding. :(
if it was me, and i got one more post from someone who simply hasn't read properly so far, i might scream like a little girl.
to the several hundred silent members who have downloaded this plane and are happily using it without problem, could some of you be so kind as to just post a little thankyou/comment of appreciation, please, because looking at the pages of 'bug reports' so far, which have primarily been members just failing to read or understand what has been said so far, and not actual bugs, i feel really sorry for the modder here.
if it was me, i would've packed my bags and left already.
modders take days/weeks/months out of their lives to bring everyone a mod for free, and so many just can't be bothered to just take a few minutes out of their time to read the thread properly, so we end up with repeat questions, and plain lack of understanding the basics.
it's embarrassing, is what it is. :-[

just some musings on the K13 missiles, not necessarily related to this mod....
armed with 4 of these babies, i went up against 3 Tu-4's, and on the first run i was behind them, but also had the sun directly in front of me. guess what - all 4 of the missiles ignored the Tu's, and seemed to head for the sun, lol.
on the second attempt, i made sure to have the sun way off to my left, and this time, i had 100% success rate. the first two missiles hit, third missed, and 4th hit. nothing but burning debris from the Tu's left.
i love these liitle details, and i am having way more fun with this jet than i ever expected. :D
i'll say it again - BIG THANKS for this, Eric - it's like a nice ray of sunshine over these last few wintery days here in Cape Town. :D

What a treat this aircraft is! I agree with someone's comment that the hover stability is fantastic. Some people think it's ugly, but I think it has a brute purposefulness to it. This has become my favourite jet by far lol!
After a few test flights I've got the hang of it and now in some test dogfights against multiple enemies I've been transitioning to hover, catching my breath and then screaming off at terrain level to avoid AAMs! Jets trying to splash me have been flying into the ground after not being able to pull out of high speed gun runs and their AAMs have been slamming into the turf regularly. I think the latter is due to the accurate modelling of early AAMs and radars with limited 'look down/shoot down' capability.
I have only one question: I've seen some stats saying that the top speed of the '36 was 1,150 km/h, but at full throttle I've only been able to manage about 850 km/h, though at low level. I may have answered my own question there, but given that the stats don't specify whether the top speed mentioned is at sea level or altitude, does anyone have any more reliable stats? Either way, many thanks to Eric for his great work. What a corker!

SAS~S3, I have 4.10.1 + DBW1.7. I'll try a 20% fuel loadout + empty but it will be a quick dash as this bird has short legs. I have run out of fuel before as I just keep flying around in this thing; landing on carriers, going around, touch and goes - great fun! Good job the ejector seat works though as I lose track of how much fuel I have as I'm buzzing around. Also good job it's only a sim lol!

Guys that use DBW or 4.10.1 can use version 1.25, which is also on first post that retaining control key "Deploy tail hook" for VTOL mode. The only difference between 1.27 and 1.25 is the tail hook (3d and function) that's all. :)
I've made correction on first post. The VTOL mode will get its own dedicated key in the next SAS Engine mod for 4.12.1 and hopefully new DBW. ;)

As I said before... who needs a tail hook to land on a carrier. :) This bird will touch down smooth as silk and then just lock in the chocks. :)

You'll get new features with newer game version, that's the unspeak rule. Besides, there's nothing wrong with current 1.25 for 4.10.1, I'll fix major bugs, if there's any.

i doubt it, Kant....this mod was designed on 4.11.1, and any further development will only be for forward patches, not backward.
it already works in DBW (4.10.1) - isn't that enough?
you have to realise that any new features will be made only for newer versions, so it's better to just be happy with the current 4.10.1 version, and consider making a new version install. ;)

The point is that 4.101 is not exactly the "older version" - most people still use 4.101 bc the last big modpack is for 4.101 - UP3 development stopped on 4.101 and will not go any further, UP guys are adding 4.11/4.12 stuff to 4.10 instead.
That means that if someone switches to 4.12/4.11 he leaves all UP3 stuff - most importantly maps and objects, at least in my case - behind. A lot of that stuff is only obtainable by UP3 + DBW, bc they aren't simply few mods thrown togeather, it also includes a lot of compatibility work + it's in SFS.
Until DBW for 4.12 is out and that, if ever happens, is long time away, a majority of community will stay on DBW 1.71.

Looks, thoughts and oppinions is welcome. But what a modder or a group of modders do is up to them, it's purely their decision. So if you're still insisting on making stuffs compatible with this and that. Good luck. :)
And if you want to do something your way, then do it yourself. I am happy to share everything about this project, from the 3ds max file to the java source code and flight model.

But in general this statement is simply wrong for "maps and objects".
I have all the regarding UP3 (and DBW) SFS objects files in my 4.11 and 4.12 Modact,
works without any problems. And maps never were a problem in any Games version.

i second that - maps and objects are the easiest things to carry over from version to version, as they do not touch classfiles at all, in any way

got it working in dbw 1.71 with jetwar 1.3; however, the skins dont show up from the various skinners, only default. I labeled the skin folder according to air.ini entry. Anyone else having probs getting skins to show?

Latest report DBW1.71; used of 125 is OK; tested 126 and 127 W/O loading problems.
using 125b NULL loading; also have tested 128 result was Null loading similar.

the plane sunk into ground. I looked at the _Clip hooks and noticed that _Clip08 is missing. Just add the missing _Clip08 to some mesh to avoid sinking into ground again.

I have problem with it, it crashes on 70% when uploading the game, the same effect was with MiG19.
I followed all instructions but doent have a clue why it crashes, it doesnt give error message of any kind. I can fly witout problems with MiG21 and L159G.
Can someone guess what would be a problem, is ti maybe with jetwar 1.3 mod?

Adler, firstly, if it's crashing at 70%(more likely 60%, but the problem is probably the same)
then you MUST have some reference to it in the game's error log.
in the game root folder, this is by default the 'log.lst' file.
please note, instructions on how to properly set this up in the conf.ini file are explained here:

and, if you don't have it already, you will need to install the 'Instant Log' mod, here:

once those are in place, then the error will be found inside the error log, log.lst file.
normally the relevant info is toward the end of this file, last 1/3 or so, so you need to look there, or if you don't know what to look for, then paste the text into your post for us to look at it.

It is a very beautiful mod . I use it in 4.10.1 + Modact 3.06 .
But I noticed that the canopy can be opened at high speed without bringing aerodynamic trouble, which is not realistic .
Same thing for the landing gear ( In fact, the gear is jammed at 670 km/h , which is very fast ) .

I can lock the cockpit door when gear is off the ground, if you want :). And have a message on screen: "Draken, you are not suppose to open the canopy at this speed". Just mean you can, doesn't mean you should.

Edit: Now when i use the Yak I get CTD sometimes on takoff or during flight, any soultions? The log repeats that last bit 1000 times or so so I left the rest of it out.

Edit: Now when i use the Yak I get CTD sometimes on takoff or during flight, any soultions? The log repeats that last bit 1000 times or so so I left the rest of it out.

hi, the harrier is not working as i get 70 percent crash. i dwlded the 1.25 without hd mod. when i do the file without the harrier, it works. any ideas? was the harrier included in the 1.25 without hd file?

Only version 2.5 have SMF variants. you have downloaded version 1.25 from "Old version" section of the post thus does not have this new aircraft.

It does work in 410.1m/dbw/fullmonty
From out of the box no changes to files copy the original yak 36 to a -temp file then drop in the new yak36 to your mod file allow overwrite. plus do the air.ini for the yak36smf and plane ru.
This is the way I did it and it works all weapons and takeoff and hovers quite nice

:P yes I got the Null mission load message after installing the new version over a working single Yak-36. I read the forums and re downloaded the latest Engine mod 2.6RC Final from the supplied thread. Try it it worked for me, back up your old one first though. Hope it helps anyone with same issue?

it's impossible, physically. You should read about how these old/early radar work. in RP-22, the radar panel litterally, physically spin to cover a large area in front of the plane. However, when locked, the radar stop spinning, and the panel is automatically adjusted at an angle where it continously "beaming" its radar wave against a single target, disregarding other target in the areas. So bascially they do not know where the other is. If they want to acquire another target, they have to complete another scan before they can start lock on again.
A side note, have anyone test the engine overheat for these 2 VTOL in 4.11? Does it get overheat too quick like other jets? If the overheat issues is considerable here, then I'll apply similar fixes to the MiG-21 series.

Greetings, I have no problem with the engine overheating, DBW 1.71 JETWAR 1.3 , 4.101m with buttons 10.3 . I did however have a problem with a bad download of this same file, would not work in 5 attempts. Re-downloaded, installed works like a charm. This is one mean beast. Thanks for the great work.

Will there be a low resolution for this Yak36 variant? Just thought I would ask, cuz for some reason the texture, true color mods in the jsgme ME is NOT working even though I have it on the right side, so I figured if there was a possibility for the low-res. If not no problem I will use my other cpu that has 4.11.1 MA 4 (I added this plane and LOVE IT)but would love to have it in DBW 4.10.1. Either way thank you!!

Did a long flight in 4.11 yesterday, a strafing mission where then 4 F-100s appeared, shot them all down (2 with Cannons! ;)), did a hoover landing when returning to homebase, and although I often had to use full thottle I had no overheating (drop of engine power or burning engine) so far. BUT: I had "HudLog" off in conf.ini, so I can't tell you anything about warning HUD screen messages. Will repeat the mission with "HudLog" ON later. :)

I've got a slight bug with SMF:
On the normal Yak-36 I can use the refueling probe key to switch the hovering on, on SMF only arresting hook key works. Not a huge thing, just annoying to have two separate keys for different aircraft.
Otherwise, great work! ;)
Edit: Oh, and running 4.11+JetWar1.32+EngMod2.6RCfinal+Both Mig21 mods.

For guys that have null error on mission load, even if you think you have the latest SAS engine mod, please download and install again. This I'm 100% possitive.
Reason, in FMD, to enable AI closing canopy on carrier take off:
CCanopy 1 (default/stock value for open canopy)
In this FMD:
CCanopy 2
The game won't recognize value 2 and will throw a null error message. Only latest SAS engine mod have this feature.

Had the 1.25b installed and working in my DBW1.71 with the tgb resized to 1024x1024 as my rig does noe handle the HD mod very well: switched today to the 2.5 and the game loads fine (resized here also the tgb for the two versions) but in QMB when clicking on the button to display the aircraft nothing happens and when loading the mission I get a typical no cockpit screen...

I do not use the HD mod, because, like gianlucabagatti, my machine does not like it... so a non HD version would be appreciated (for the normal Yak-36, I took the tgb/tga files from the non-HD version...).

the yak-36 v1.28 works but the v1.25 doesnt work(null error)
now i copied the v2.5 over the v1.28 and v1.25, both times it didnt work (null error)
the v2.5as standalone didnt work too. :(
any ideas what i did wrong?

As for SMF - I'm using HD version, dind't try to convert it to low-res.
Testing on DBW in configuration as above, I had to use Arrestor Hook and increase throttle to take-off.
Tested on ground. In ship I guess you have to get chocks-off first. Make sure you have buttons 10.3 and re-check Jetwar1.32+Eng2.6 RCfin (May-June 2013) installation.
As for nonSMF - indeed vertical start doesn't work. strange... Tried with both Refuel and Arrestor
But on the other hand - 1st post explains package with SMF won't work on 4.10.1

Downloaded and applied files line for line as directed. Works great, awesome fun. However, I lost all of the cockpits for Jet War a/c, i.e., F-86, earlier MiGs etc. Any easy fix besides uninstalling the Yak? Thanks.

This a/c is my absolute FAVORITE and the ordinance makes this plane........NOT to be messed with!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to S3 and all who had a hand in making this plane it TRULY is innovative!!! Many naysayers out there said/posted/thought jets couldn't be modeled in IL-2, let alone ones that have VTOL capabilities/active hud display/modern jets/etc.....they said "It couldn't be done".....BUT IT BE DONE!!

Finally found which tga file to resize, etc... and tested both.
-the original Yak-36 engine does not come in hovering position, no way to do it work. But is *Deploy Refueling Device" for this function ? or is it something else (I have seen nothing regarding refueling probe...). This apart, the plane takes off normally, and in flight, it handles well.
-the SMF... WOAW ! this is a real BEAST ! Arrestor key to make it hovering works perfectly, and the plane is flying very well (I must not forget to retract the air brakes once in flight...) !

Ok, I swore not to waste precious S3's time anymore, but something still tickles inside, I can't let it go.
So:
In last my post about problems with SMF i've included log file, which led to conclusion that outdated version of Engmod is to blame.
Since then I've spent countless hours redownloading and reinstalling every required mod from first to last, except maybe L-159 and true color, since it would be simply absurd. I have replaced:
- Jet era 1.32, + hotfix and patch.
- Buttons 10.3
- SAS Engine mod +hotfix
- Mig-21.
Guess what? Nothing changed. The only possible reason for such tragedy that I can think of is my exceptional ability to make outrageously stupid mistakes in the most unexpected places.
So, I want to ask some idiotic questions. Hopefully they will be the last ones, and if nothing changes I give up.
Currently I have two folders in my #SAS directory: !SAS_Engine_Mod_4101m_v26 and 000_1956_Core_v13. I think, maybe this is not a proper place to install both these mods? I have tried to start them both with JSGME, that resulted in ctd. I have tried to put them both into #DBW, that changed nothing. Engmod installation instruction implies it can be either in #SAS or in #DBW, Jetwar core installation instruction recommends to put it into #SAS. Question for those who have SMF working in DBW install: where are your !SAS_Engine_Mod_4101m_v26 and 000_1956_Core_v13 folders?
Second thing. Link in the first post leads to Engmod topic by Anto. There is a huge red link screaming "Download 2.6 Release Candidate Final *Both Game Versions*(updated 02 May 2013)", this is where I've got my !SAS_Engine_Mod_4101m_v26 folder from, and I haven't used any older versions of Anto's mod. I've simply downloaded aforementioned folder (along with 4.11 version), extracted it into my #DBW (moved to #SAS), replaced Catapults.ini, replaced some classfiles with hotfix (another red screaming link), and here I am, getting "Mission loading failed: null" message. Is there something that I may have missed? Is there some older mod required to have, or fix/patch somewhere in Engmod thread, or anything else that I could have missed? What is the correct procedure for installing latest Engmod?
Last (and probably the least): is it somehow possible that hardware limitations are causing my problem? I have quite old rig, so far I've had some minor problems with true color mod, nothing serious (AI piloted planes with HD skins sometimes tend to simply disappear, it never led to any error), even more - I've resized default SMF skin to 1024, with no result. But maybe some state-of-the-art effects are too much for old hardware and it causes game not to recognize some values in some files? (yeah, this is variant is pretty weak)
I am fully aware that most of these questions are absolutely dumb, yet currently I am at the point of such desperation that I don't even feel ashamed of myself. Also I am sorry if my English is unreadable at some places of this stupidly long and complicated post.
S3, no matter what, you've made an incredible job - who could have thought such things are even remotely possible in Il-2 skies.

After installing 2.5 I can't get the V/TOL junk to work on the original version. SMF works great???
OK so I'm using 4.10 DBW, the original Yak-36 V/TOL gear worked great. Is there a way to get the V/TOL gear to work with 4.10 on the 2.5 version?

One version uses the "Deploy Refuelling Device" key and the other uses the "Deploy Arrestor Hook" key (I think the SMF uses the arrestor one).

It depends on what version of the game your running. In DBW its the arrestor hook key. In later versions of the game its the fuel probe key

G'day!
This has most likely been mentioned before, however I have scanned through the entire thread and have not come across anything.
After install the Yaks, (they work great by the way) the aircraft seem to have limited the loadout options on some of my other aircraft. The Fishbeds do not have their GP-1 gunpods, K-13 missiles or droptanks. Very strange.
Has anyone had, or does have, a similar experience?

Merry Christmas to all involved with this project ,and site users. When the fuel probe key is activated it now shows up on screen. Got both versions to work in my new 4.12.2 install after re-installing Jet War "33" version with patches. Now if I could do the same in my DBW version.

Thank you very much, everything works just reinstalled Java! But there was one question. Missiles Kh-66 is very capricious, rocket loses goal after a few seconds after launch. A very big difference with Kh-29 from L-159G that catch goal per mile and go to her very confident! Maybe I'm just wrong using them. If so, explain or show where you can read about this...

A Great work indeed, but I've got a strange bug, I installed this plane in my 4.101+DBW1.71 and have installed all those mods necessary for this plane. But when I select this plane in my QMB, the plane didn't appear. I mean, when I select this plane and want to change the skin of it when playing quick mission, I didn't see anything in the block.
Anyone has an idea what's going wrong in such case? THX really really much!!

People need more info than that.
What version of the game are you running? Can you fly any of the required planes?
I had to enable the HD mod tru the JGME module for example.

Finally got the SMF working :D
However there are a few things.
First: There are some pretty nice and awesome mods in il 2 but in my opinion this one is the best congrats :)
The second thing is some issue with the lights. There is no tail light, niether landing lights. Whitch i guess was not intended. So could you fix it or if its a simple thing could you tell me how to fix it?
And the last little thing would be a suggestion.
I thought if you could just assign another key to the exhaust pipe controlls for example the select radiator position key(which can have more than two positions) a real short take off could work(when the pipes are around 45 degrees) and the transitioning could be also smoother. I dont know if its possible but it would be sooo fun :D

No, Tom. I do not use Hi-Rez mod. And the 2 planes work perfectly. I just had to change the textures of the plane folders (but did not touch anything in the cockpit folder), using the textures of the previous 1.25b Low-Res version (the 2 planes use the same tga files). Et voilà ! Superb planes !
And I can also use the custom skins, after resizing them to 1024X1024/8PBB with Irfan View.

ill try this 4.11 version then, i even re-installed engine & hd mod. mig-19 too. tried re-install this yak and using those different fms. nothing yet hasnt seem to help.

In PaintSchemes/Skins folder, did you create a Yak-36S and a Yak-36SMF folder to put your skins in ? did you put some skins in ? if not... nothing but default skin will be available !
Then... are you using HiRez mod ? if yes, there should be no problems.
Personnally, I do not use it. So I did what I said a little upper on this page with the tga files of the Yak-36SMF. And I also resized the skins to 1024X1024/8BPP with Irfan View. And it works perfectly !

Hi Tom2, thanks for your reply. Well, I have High Resolution / True Color Textures Mod already activated via jsgme, but I have not carsmaster Lights in the IL-2.

I have to say these two air-crafts are the most exciting thing I've seen ever since I started to play this game, yet I'm a little confused.
I've installed the Yak-36S on my 4.10+DBW1.71+everything required until I found that there's a SMF version updated here, but as the post said "version2.5 for 4.11", I 'm wondering whether it could fly in DBW1.71?

This happens with most of the jet planes. When there isn't a real speed (and this is typically with hovering as you can do here or with helicopters) the behaviour of the game is the one of an old plane, considering that there isn't any incoming air flow for refrigeration, so temperature goes up easily.
There is a lot of work to be done to adapt WWII modelling to modern jets like these ones.

I cannot make it work without the NoOpenCanopyAI patch though :-X No other mods use it, that I am aware of. Otherwise it works just great!

SMF needs a overheat fix for 4.12.2
I am tinkering with it. Have fixed the overheat issue but tryint to rid the thin smoke trails I get in my 4.12 SAS ModAct 5.3. Looking in the classfile but cant find it. I'll post up the FM soon.

Agree, or at least that when selected country is GB (or US or whatever you like the most) the Harrier. If possible.

May I ask a thing - there was an issue, when I got a wing shot off at the SMF, but the plane kept on flying. It was even working with thrust bent down (harrier had those movement things in wingtips - so it would be inoperable), will it be on the new Harry?

However, there is a little issue : My computer cannot display 2048 pixel graphics and therefore I cannot use HD textures mod or fly with these planes. So is there any chance of somebody uploading 1024 pixel textures of these 2 planes ?

I am sorry to disturb again, but niether of Yak-36 planes appear on QMB preview screen... I dont know if there is a problem from the fact that I am using non-HD textures (I modified the HD ones to 1024 pixels and 8 bit colour depth). Below is the logfile of my attempt to fly with Yak-36 SMF. While I entered the game screen, there was no plane at all. Any kind of help and advise is appreciated. Thank you

strange. I tried the Yaks with and even without HD-Mod and both variants loaded without any problems. And: I get no log lines dealing with this planes :-X
I would reinstall this mod from scratch and read every available info in this thread before doing so. Also I'd use search to find any similar reports ..
do you have all what is needed? Engine mod etc?

I re-installed this mod from scratch and still the same thing... The funny thing is that L-159 and Mig -21 mods work fine.

I've spotted a few minor issues though.
The landing gear have a tiny glitch.

Is this plane confirmed to work with 4.12.2 version with ModAct 5.30 ? Because I have tried everything to make it work (apart from HD Mod) and still nothing.. I am a bit confused

Sorry for the really late reply.
For your problem, there are some textures inside the 3do folder of the aircraft that are in 2048x2048 so you won't be able to use the mod without the HD mod. However, if you have photoshop or any texture editor that can edit .tga files, you can open and resize them to 1024 then save. it should work perfectly.
Otherwise, let me search my files for the resized textures that should work for you.

Well, I would prefer it if you could give me your textures (if you are able to do it of course) I tried of course to resize the tgb files (and make the colour depth 8 bit), but again nothing.
But are you sure this is the problem because in the past I loaded other airplane mods with HD and they showed up, but their colouring was bright pink or something like that. I have posted the error logfile at the end of page 35 if you feel like seeing what my problem exactly is.. and one more time thank you

Update : I managed to make v 1.25b with low-res textures work... so I guess it was the textures problem all along... I will try to add the textures from this version to the newest and see if it works

You're putting an aircraft 3d, into a different aircraft slot and ask where is the problem? ;D. No, seriously..........
For more information, problem is in java animation code: the angle was reversed. If you can access the code and add a - in front of the angle value, it'll fix this.

Very nice aircraft
I install the SMF Version V2.5 on a DBX 1.71 4.101 and others necessary mods..
I was obliged to reduce the size of TGA and TGB in 3DO folders to run without HD .. but it's easy to do .
All is working perfectly .. the most amusing jet in the game easy to land (jet are generally difficult.. for me)

Is it only me, or does the SMF version especially have a very bad elevator response? When I try to pull up, I need to have more than 750 km/h IAS or it won't even pull up without flaps. Kind of difficult to do ground attack when you can't pull up from a dive at all. I am running on 4.12 Modact and all the required mods.

I haven't had that problem in the past, and I run 4.12.2. I'll have to fire up my copy of modact that is installed on and check that.

It's not only you, it's true. Just compare the size of the elevator and the aircraft itself. Too small. that's why most modern fighter aircraft use all moving elevator/stabilizer to increase maneuverability.
This problem is fixed with the up coming AV-8B mod.
Regarding the progress of the mod, Currently I've fit the F-18 cockpit (under development) onto this aircraft, but the cockpit itself need further work so that's why this project is delayed a bit. But it is being actively working on so it'll get release eventually. ;)

For those of you having problems with "null" loading file... this is what I have found to make it work.
First of all, wonderful MOD. I am of course trying to do my own thing so I am learning how to use benitomuso's Total Modder with a TFM412 pack, it is taking a while because I am installing one pack at a time, but it is working. When I got to TFM412 Pack 09 I hit a problem... (BTW, using that on top of ModAct 5.3). Pack 08 introduces Jet War and Pack 09 introduces Cold War era planes, and the Yak-36s are in that pack (it is the v 2.5)
At first I could not see either of the Yak-36's in the plane selector... I made sure that the HD mod was on, but nothing, so I made sure to overwrite the two dlls (il2_core.dll and il2_corep4.dll) with the mod ones... and you need to make sure you have the right ones, because they all seem to have the same size, so I used the ones dated 03/01/2013. That fixed being able to see the planes and loadouts...
However I was getting a "null" error on loading the mission. I looked at the log file and saw that the error was ID 4, and it had something to do with the "yak36" flight model data file. I tried flying a MiG-21 and all was good... it was only the Yak-36... so I tried in vain all different versions of the "yak36" flight model file in the Mod... same results... after reading a few of the posts here, concerning the ModAct flight engine version I tackled that.
Total Modder loads mods in order, and I had the MOD ACT 5.30 activation files running before Engine version 2.7... Once I had Engine 2.7 loading before the MOD ACT 5.3 files then I was able to fly both Yak-36's. Makes sense since the first occurring version of a file is the one that will be loaded by Total Modder, so the engine files are newer than the ones in MOD ACT 5.30... for those not going through the same process, to overcome the "null" loading, the key truly is loading the latest MOD ACT engine on top of MOD ACT 5.30. The latest engine version is 2.7.

Not anymore... it is working now. The old log file with the error was overwritten with the one that didn't have any errors. Basically the HD mod with *correct* DLLs makes the HD skinned Yaks appear, and the SAS Engine V2.7 ensures the "yak36" flight model file does not cause an error ("null" upon loading a mission). I read this entire 38 page thread and there were a couple of people with the same problem. There was one of the replies that suggested re-installing the SAS engine. For me it was something like that, except that since I am using Total Modder, it was a matter of switching the load order, and that did the trick...
Oh wait... I think you meant "get to the point"... sorry, no can do... it is either a long dissertation or nothing. I choose long dissertation. :P

still you didn't tell, what is the cause... it happens a lot even with other mods, like Mi-24, Su-25... but a small change in mission file is ussually enough to make it run...

you have to assign this button in the "controls" menu,
afair its the "deploy refuelling device".

have to search for it on my HDs first.

about the L-159G - and it's siblings - were these not recently made redundant by the updated L-39 Pack by - i think Stefan SG? - dated 10/09/2015.
i'm also interested in this, because we really need to isolate and eliminate some of these age-old dependencies..... especially when some of those old mods are becoming harder to find....

Gemini, another thing i see that's wrong in your install, is the Engine Mod, and then almost right at the bottom of your list is Engine Mod patch 2.7 by western....
in such a case, your game is not reading most of the updated files from western.
you must take the western 2.7 update files, and put them inside the Engine Mod folder, overwriting any that need....
with your current setup, you should experience several problems.....

lol, while i was using the 36 for testing to sort out others issues here, i just tried to load the SMF model for the first time in some while, and the 3d doesn't load in the preview box...
log is moaning about Turret1A_D0.msh not found... to the best of my knowledge, there is no such mesh.
again, the last time i flew this plane it worked perfectly, and i have made no changes to it whatsoever, so why does suddenly want a mystery mesh...?

the regular 36 variant hier file has no such references for turret meshes, so why does this one?
i've made zero changes since i last flew this plane, and most definitely never edited the hier in any way...

i'm pretty sure the 3d doesn't look right - the tail/rudder section, and those gaps in the wings don't look familiar to me, but as i said, it's a while since i've flown it...

So i have cup but the yak-36 freehand d spawns and dips downward for like 10 seconds and i cant pull up so i have to spawn at a high altitude. Also i cant take off in the yak-36 freehand d because i cant pull up and i cant do it vertically even with deploying refueling device. I can only take off and fly in the original freehand..
