Title: China and Formosa
Post by: MR_G on May 25, 2013, 11:32:03 AM
This is my poor attempt to take one of the maps from farang65's China Starter map pack, and try to make it slightly useble. I copied many of the airfields from agracier's Formosa map, added a seaplane base, and attempted to place an airfield in China (not very flat).
Again, this is a poor map, but I hope that someone who knows what they are doing can work on it.

I've tried every trick from the Ultapack site, but I always end up making it worse. There are a few airfields on Formosa that aren't flat either.
Since this is not my map, anyone if free to improve it.

It could be a nice map for use of the Ki-10, Ki-27, early Ki-21, B4Y-1, and hacks to make E7K-1, and A4N, for Japan.

Hi there,

Thanks for having a go at one of those old starter maps.  ;D :D ;)

That is how Sth Vietnam started an initial starter map by me then Mission Bug took on the extreme effort of completing the map.

To level airfields

Go into fmb +

Use the fill tool in the objects list way down HEIGHT around the bottom of the list ( it will have peek, fill, and blur)

Mark around the airfield using fill. You will see the ground drop some.

When finished click save in fmb +

Go to your works folder in IL-2 1946/ maps/XXXXXXmap

Open the map_h tga in Gimp.

Source the airfield by zooming in to the area.

You will see a black outline around the airfield made by you in fmb+

Choose a colour in the middle of the airfield using the colour picker

Then paint using a 1 pixal brush filling in the outlined area then finally the outlined area.

Save your work for new map_h  in Gimp.

Copy and paste from IL-21946/MAPS/XXXXX(map) to MAPMODS/maps/XXXXX(mapfolder and overwrite)

That should level off your airfield.

Cheers

Kirby

I will see what I can do.
In the past, doing this sort of work causes my eyes to start to bleed and my head to catch on fire.
I have no talent for this sort of thing, but I'll give it a go, when I get some spare time.

PS Do you know what causes the green beach areas?

Any progress on this very useful map?

Recent added planes need more space to fight in the Cino-Japanese war....

Thanks in advance for your reply!

i've done a new version of this map.
Half of Formosa with Shang Hai and Nanking included as well as some mountainous areas.

i am slowly learning object importing via kev p's airfield plates and barn tutorials.

To make it unique at least a genuine Chinese object pack for it (thinking about the 2 major cities and towns)

Will be a process importing genuine Chinese architecture

Great news mate!

Did you plan to share it as beta in the future?

That area , extended to Shang Hi and Nanking , 'll be a must for the Cino-Japanese war!

It's good to know that somebody with actual map skills is working on this area.
Everything I tried with this map, and the upper Burma map, ended up looking like crap.
The only map that I had any luck with was the Cape Gloucester map where I moved Lae
to a north south direction, and added a few airfields north east of Lae.

Kirby,

If you can import some Chinese architecture, you will be my personal hero. Something map-makers sorely need.

learning the process now and sourcing suitable 'free' Chinese architecture to try.

I'd think you'd need at least 50 or so new objects to make the cities look different and not just factory auto popped style look.

Once I've learned the process then start experimenting with the sourced Chinese architecture.

Have found a very good source for IJA IJN airfields for Formosa as well.

When I made the Upper Burma map not knowing at the time the height cut off point in il_2 the mountains looked horrible.

I'm not convinced you need totally new buildings. You can take the Uflaake approach and just put new skins on the old Slovakia buildings. Apart from pagodas and other unique buildings, a brick or wood cottage or labourer's house is going to look much the same anywhere.

Now that we got the excellent Henyang map, this map would fill a BIG gap! Not least when it comes to the early phases of the Sino-Japanese war: several crucial battles in 1937 took place on the area covered.

I hope the projects isn't dead ...  :-|

Any news on this? We seriously lack some China maps
