Title: WW1 Weapons Pack Ready to DL
Post by: Dreamk on March 21, 2013, 02:18:42 PM
I have had for a long time the feeling that the growing fleet of ww1 aircraft demanded suitable weapons implementa. the fact that its origin was in Frankenplanes resulted in some strange combinations of "ww1-era-looking" planes with at best ww2 guns and bombs, and at worst some strange guns with "interesting" characteristics - so I took myself by the hand, and made some research to find the details of guns, ammo, and bombs. It was not really easy but at last here's the
result: a ww1 weapons pack with 22 guns and 147 bombs (Austro Hungary: 13, UK: 20, France 40, Germany: 29, Italy: 12, Russia: 16, USA: 17)

I also made the suitable java and meshes updates for the ww1 planes already released so you can copy thes update and use this pack without headache. (I didnt not update the initial franken planes are they are too much "unhistorical" but I included update for 3 planes not released to public but as beta to limited forum)

I included in this pack the Le Prieur Rockets by AMT team released with the Camel and the Cooper bomb rack released with the Snipe.

Except for 4 bombs, I succeeded to find detailed trustable drawings with dimensions, weight (and for almost all of them the weight of the explosive and its nature). Remember that some bombs did change, sometimes drastically, along the years while keeping the same name. Most changes occurred in 1918, 1919 and after 1920 - for instance Interwar period French bombs 50kg type A and 10kg PA are different from the same name ww1 bombs. German PuW did evolve throughout the ww1. Another case is Poland - it used late ww1 PuW but also PuW developped in Germany in 1919-21 (German armament industry did continue to function after the armistice !) and also produced its own PuW and even developped original PuW models (5kg and 75 kg for instance)

Remember that most ww1 bombs were under 10kg and with results in accordance - not to speak of the lack of suitable doctrine for the use of air bombs till 1917.

Color of bombs remain an issue - that may be unsolvable in some cases - I went according to information written during ww1 or immediatly after, and used photographs as base in some case - but we all know the problems of the chromatic black and white used before the mid 20s (yellow appears black and such...).
Once again, keep in mind that colors and markings of bombs during the war period were different from 1919 onwards colors and markings (see US bombs for instance).

BTW these bombs bitmaps really need to be improved to look more "metallic" - the forum artists are kindly invited to take a hand in this task  :)

Guns - I succeeded to find the data of guns and their corresponding ammo used in the ww1 period.

BTW I discovered that the caliber variable issue that so troubled other modders is a matter of fact a false issue - Il2 uses a polynomial equation for this variable  (general equation ~ x2/10 - x + 3.6227). Under 20mm this equation curve is almost linear. The adjustments made to individual values under 20mm to "increase

realism" are dwarfed by the magnitude or the error originating in that fact that the data used are from machine guns firing in horizontal fire on land shooting range and

not in a 3D spatial setting - to explain more easily, the Hotchkiss 13.2 of the interwar period when used as a land weapon had a wonderful effective range of more

than 2500m but as a AA weapon of only 1600m. The most important thing in modelling guns in Il2 is to keep internal coherence with the other guns in the game - thisi

has been done for the guns in this pack, and these guns are also coherent with Il2-core weapons in the same range (under 20mm).

ok so here they are:

UPDATE
This pack is for SAS Modact with own slot planes
For DBW1916 Vpmedia has made a pack for making DBW1916 installation easier: here it is:
[included in DBW-1916]

After installing the plane updates - always check that the names of the mods folders are the same- , delete the cod and arms subfolders insid these planes folders - if not you'll get entries doubled in the arming screen (just unesthetic - it will not cause other troubles)

hi,

Somehow I got 60% CTD after instalig this, its not about the air ini, I copyed the new files into the correct aircarft's folder, after that I checked the  cod files and deleted them, right after that I checked the weapons ru and made the modifications, did I miss something?

Try to rename the 0_WW1Bombs_ folders in _ww1Bombs_ or AAAww1Bombs_, though a problem with these files would cause a 20% ctd error.
What si possible is that you have installed ALL the update files, including for mods that did not exist previously in your mod folder - this could cause a 60% CTD error.

ok than what should we do about this? I mean that the last option what did you say must be the problem.

I am speechless ...  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G arsenal for WW1 fans everywhere.

THANK YOU so much (http://serve.mysmiley.net/animated/anim_37.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-animated-smileys.php) DreamK.  (http://serve.mysmiley.net/party/party0012.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

This must be tested slowly to see if it all fits in everyones game. Testing takes some time and
we will take time to test!
Do not worry folks, everything will be ok.

I am installing and testing each plane seperatly. So far the Se5 and Se5a and the Spad7 check out ok in
QMB have not tested them in FMB. The Fokker DR1 works in QMB but not with AI contolled aircraft they
are frozen in mid air.

I started by loading gun and bomb folders.
I made copies of all my plane folders. Then started updating
Plane by plane. I found the Fokker DVI causes a 60% ctd

Thanks DreamK! I'm gonna have fun time while testing this, but its gonna take a while.

My guess is that with the new weapons added,  many missions and campaigns will require editing and retesting which will be quite a task for the future. I think planes usually explode when they got a bomb ordnance which doesnt exists anymore. Needs to be tested.

About install problems and crashes:

- Fokker Dr.I has a good set of classfiles only in my DBW-1916 update because I had access to previous versions and when the "plane frozen in mid air" issue was reported I reverted to an earlier set and it solved the problem. The version you can download still has the FM problem. 'Mid air freezing' is not realted to this mod imho.
- Nieuport 17 and 23 is not in DBW-1916 (...and I'm getting very tired to see screens of them all the time!)
- Fokker D.VII is not in DBW-1916 only a frankenplane
-Caproni.42 doesnt have its own slot yet so its not in DBW-1916
- Friedrichshafen G.III still has the SM_S55 slot because the own slot version was unable to take of so I could not import it into DBW-1916 (reported the problem many times)
- because of mission compatbility DBW-1916 still has the old slot Nieuport.11, so this upgrade will not effect it

When I'll install this I'm gonna copy all files into one common folder and load them first (in DBW1916 call the folder #00_DreamKWeapons then it will be loaded before every other folder), theres no need to overwrite anything. Duplicates are not a problem if the right version is at the first place in the load order. Its not elegant but neccesary for testing. Just backup your weapons_ru.properties file before editing it.

Cheers

Boeing is correct the DVI is causing a 60% CTD crash on my system also.
Boeing, this is easily fixed by replacing the aircraft from your backup copy.

if it turns out some guys are struggling with this, can i ask, Dreamk, Istvan, would you guys consider incorporating this into a future 1916 patch/update?
it might make life easier for those who are a bit confused...
Title: Re: WW1 Weapons Pack Ready to DL
Post by: vpmedia on March 22, 2013, 12:41:32 AM
I gave it a try but getting the 60% crash despite that I only added the planes which are in fact in DBW.1916.
After a few attempts I've found that a classfile caused the crash in the Rolland D.II folder of the arms upgrade. (D767974CFD948F78). Now I see that this was for a different slot which is not in DBW.1916 because of mission compatibility.
I've also found that the The Fokker Dr.1 classfile causes mid air freezing of AI planes + the Fokker D.VI classfiles indeed will cause a 60% ctd.

Only these will work in DBW.1916:

AEG-CIV
Albatros DIII
Albatros DVa
Aviatik(il)
Aviatik(multi1)
BE2c
CaproniCA32
CaproniCA33
Dirigibile_M
Fokker EIII
Fokker DVIII
Lohner_L
Macchi_L1
Oeffag DIII
Se5
Se5A
Snipe
SPAD-7(Multi1)
Zeppelin_M
Zeppelin_P

The ones which had to be removed / reasons:

CaproniCA42 / no slot yet, not in dbw.1916 solved!
Fokker DVI / ctd
Fokker DVII / unavailable/wip
FokkerDr1 / mid air freezing
FriedrichshafenG.III / different slot, not in dbw.1916
Nieuport 17 17Bis 23 IV / unavailable/wip
Nieuport11 / different slot, not in dbw.1916
Roland_DII / different slot, not in dbw.1916

I hope this helps but I also made a DBW.1916 compatible version, only 5Mb compressed:
http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/zip/DBW1916_weapons_patch_v2.7z
I havent edited the weapons_ru.properties yet, this will be updated later with it.

feedback on the vp_compatible version - works well from the getgo, no loading problems.
it seems that some of the planes now suffer from the minor issue of having their loadout entries doubled in the arming screen, although to be honest, perhaps they were like this before this update - i didn't check them all previously...
it works, that's the main thing :D

Yes I get the same here Malone a few double entries in the load out menu but this has no effect on the runing of the game.

Ok I'll check the Fokker Dr1 and DVI - I forgot to say that this mod was tested with the "own slot" planes - not on DBW1916 - so it will tun without troubles if you install these own slot  planes

The 0_WWI_PlaneWeapons folder does not interfer with this mod - if you changed all planes with the present update, you do not need it longer, but teh old ww1 frankenplanes still need it.

Thats excellent! Thank you! This was the only plane which was available but not in DBW.1916 yet.

Btw I understand that many ppl cant have a 10Gb+ DBW 1.71 download so  they cant enjoy DBW.1916 either.
DBW.1916 really should have been made as a standalone pack, it would be more popular and accessible.
Maybe in the future. :)

Realy cool mod. Vpmedia your update saves me a lot of time. I noticed you left out Camel as being compatible in your update. It still tries to upload the new ordenance mod but it can only fire the left
machine gun. I wonder if the Camel is trying too use the loadout file fore the Snipe sinse it has the guns
firing on seperate triggers.

I see the Camel problem, it needs to be removed from the DBW.1916 version. I'm already working on the second version of this weapons patch, retextured all the bombs and I'm testing the planes. Since some folders need to be deactivated I'm gonna have to release a new version of DBW.1916 with these weapons later.

A cameras pack is on its way as is a bombracks pack
Cioncerning problems in DBW 1916 with some planes, the source is not in the armament but  in the rotary engine used by these planes - the same java methods are used and they demand to have SAS AI Engines Hotkeys Mod installed.

I installed this mod in to my game.
It did not work. so i removed it. My DR-1 are stuck in mid air.
So no big deal I have two back ups of my install which I had not installed the mod. Reason they are back up's.

When I tried those they also had the DR-1 stuck in mid-air.
Getting a little more than  upset at this time I formated the  "D " drive where all my games are located.

Now today after a total new reinstall it's still the same stuck DR-1's

Any idea's??

Thanks for any help.

Many thanks to all concerned for the new weapons pack, obviously a labour of love (?) ;D

As an aside, does anyone know how to get a B.E.2c aloft when carrying a 336lbs Long?
I can just about get the old girl off the ground loaded with the lighter ordinance (more by luck than artifice :D), but carrying the 336 usually results in a rather noisy and dusty 10kph tour of the airfield!
No chance of a Prieur/JATO mod ;D

Cheers

The real problem with the BE2c is that now it fires to the left instead right where the gun is pointed at.
When I deactivate the BE2c files the missions wont work.

The real problem with the BE2c is that now it fires to the left instead right where the gun is pointed at.
When I deactivate the BE2c files the missions wont work.
This is easily corrected:
Look for the mesh called Turret1C_D0 in your folder #SAS\BE2C\3do\Plane\BE2c
replace the lines:
[HookLoc]
-0.422618 -0.906308 0    0.906308 -0.422618 0   0 0 1   -0.28 -0.6746 0
by:
[HookLoc]
0.34202 -0.939693 0   0.939693 0.34202 0   0 0 1    -0.28 -0.6746 0

(let the second line of the HookLoc entries as it is)

I tried this too DreamK and yes, the gun is now firing from the correct side but the tracers seem a little too far too the right I think.

I forgot to mention but the #00_DK_WW1_Guns_n_Bombs folder which has the retextured bombs is usable both in your SAS modact install and in DBW.1916 too. ( its in http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/zip/DBW1916_weapons_patch_v2.7z )

I tried installing this both ways--w/ the orig. link and w/ VP's link.
Both times the Camel is unselectable. Can't figure it out.

I tried this out and then the parts on the 'Snipes' where they were shot turned WHITE(mostly the left lower wing) and damage on the top part of wings were inconsistent with damage underneath. The 'Camel' showed NO DAMAGE when shot. Other planes seemed to be fine. I then removed the two folders added, but what I described above now continues! Any idea of what I did wrong?  Oh, I have screenshots of what I tried to explain: should I post them?(I don't whant to clutter the site). Thanks for a great site!

Is this a modact or a DBW.1916 install youre both talking about?

The weapons patch version I made for DBW.1916 doesnt include the Camel changes because with them only one gun fired so I didnt include the classfile.

As for the Camel and Snipe damage problems, my only guess is to make sure that you play in OpenGL.
(Snipe wing going white when damaged was reported by only one person so its not an universal error, doesnt happen in my install. I think it could be also related to the size of those textures/ too large for some systems). For DBW.1916 we got an error report topic here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,30252.0.html

Hi people!

Thanks vpmedia, it works for me. I have 1916 with all your patches installed and works. The only thing that could be called an 'error' is that when I hit Camel Weapon, appear more than one Default and None option, but this isn't a problem for playing  :)
Thanks also thanks to Dreamk for the weapons.

Cheers

When you get double entries in the ordnance list you need to deactivate the folder named cod in the AIRCRAFT_CAMEL folder by renaming it to -cod. This can only be corrected in DBW.1916 when I re-release the entire pack in few weeks in one 7z file. Then you dont have to install 7 files just one.

Hi VPmedia, can you repost the ww1 weapons pack you did? I can't seem to down load it from the link. Thanks for all you have done to give us WW1 for Il2 as well as Dreamk and anyother modder involved. I know you all have put in alot of free time doing this. Just wanted to say thank you.

That link isnt active anymore because the weapons mod version for DBW-1916 was already included in the last, nr.6 patch.

Pardon me if this question is stupid, but I'm noted that when I release the bombs the majority won't explode, in the last week I'm dropped more than 10 bombs from BE.2 and another aircraft and only one (a 336 lb long) did exploded on the ground. It's a bug or a feature? There's a special technique to drop this bombs that it detonate on the ground?
Title: Re: WW1 Weapons Pack Ready to DL

The issue is not the explosion but the visual effect - since 4.10 Small bombs explosions are visible only very close (a kind of black smoke without fire) this concerns all bombs under 50kg - I must say that, if it is justified to a large extent for bombs under 30kg, for bombs of 50kg it's not realistic.

i think small bombs are like 60 mortar rounds, if you don't hit something that can be destroyed not much happens I think there should be a small dust cloud & then a crater visible for each impact to at least 1000 ft  or 325 meters but over 1500 ft or 500 meters unless you hit something there probably wouldn't be that much to see with the MK 1 eyeball , & as small arms & better flak forced  the bomb carrying planes ever higher,&  the accuracy of dead reckoning suffered badly as a result  :)

And why risk your life with a rack of small Bombs? Big Bombs a better risk to drop on target.

For anyone who is considering modding the really early WWI planes, here is a point to consider. Although many didn't have bomb racks; bombs could be carried. The observer just carried some in his cockpit, and threw them overboard. Grenades were carried too.

70% crash is usually a line written wrong somewhere in one file, or a big conflict with this mod with another, which
is much more dificult to find out where the problem is.

VPmedia, made in his last pack-patch-update the fixed and proper version to use.
Everything you really need to make DBW-1916 to work is in his package. All models and mods have been fixed
and all been put together just right.
