Title: new 3d trees and bushes....can these models be used?
Post by: SAS~Malone on March 21, 2013, 04:00:33 AM
i found this site while searching for alternative options for trees/bushes, etc.
http://www.3dmentor.ru/free-models.html

another here: http://www.klicker.de/plants.html

many of them are free, and i was wondering if a 3d guy would look at them, to see if they could be imported for use in IL-2.
i hope they can be used, without too much effort, as we really do need more variety with trees, etc...
wishful thinking, or possibly doable?

WOW  8) those palm trees look great. Superb
Stick a few of those on the IL2 beach, pass me a
cool tequila-sunrise drink and let me relax all day in the sunshine.

yeah, i'm hoping it could be done with much less work than a plane, for instance - these models (in theory) would simply need to be imported,  - they don't need all the different detail/damage level models done, nor any java work - just basic objects for populating maps with....
that said, i realise if something like this looks easy, it most likely isn't. :D
anyway, 3d gurus, or even aspiring 3d guys, please take a look and let us know...

Lol, no hit boxes on trees or bushes,??

why go to that trouble, when, all we really want is to see them (eye-candy)? - unless you have specific desire to shoot at them or want to crash into them - all i'm interested in with these is to be able to populate maps with more cool stuff to see. :D
it will be up to the 3d guy, at the end of the day - i won't expect them to do twice the work just so i can physically crash into trees, i'd be happy just to see 'em in-game. ;)

No 3d guru here, but I`ve examined briefly two of the models (one simple tree from Malone's post and a palm tree from one of Max's posts)
and they look as made for architectual or design visualization environments rather than simulation game scenery assets.
The first one has 3d trunk and branches with a texture for every leaf:

the palm tree has trunk, branches and every leaf modeled in 3d:

First model is over 18.000 tris, second one over 29.000 tris.
Considering capital ships and carriers in IL2 are in the 10.000 to 20.000 tris range, maybe is a bit of overshoot for any single tree...  :-X
Anyway, maybe some of the other examples is more suitable for the intended rol, or perhaps would be better to improve from the existing models making more variations from them or detailing them more.
I agree with Malone in that it could be a good starting point for someone wanting to learn the arts of the dark 3d side.

hi folks

I've heard rumors of an new program called plant factory that semes to come in a LIGHT version  (sorry for misspelling not native english) :-[

"Plant Factory is a revolutionary 3D vegetation modeling, animation and rendering software, dedicated to the CG, SFX, Architecture and Gaming communities.".....

I see there is a free "personal learning edition" of Plant Factory

Is it possible to create Trees in a format compatible with IL-2?

http://www.plantfactory-tech.com/download/

perhaps it could be of interest for some of the 3D artists here? , anyway is an interesting site to browse  :)

Cheers Dakpilot

The auto generated trees in IL-2 add much to the immersion along with forest IMO.
If you have managed to get the hi res trees while they where up and also grabbed SAS~farang65's jungle trees and Boomer's palm trees (hi res), you'd be very much settled for trees...

And

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,35205.0.html

His trees are in the download link..

Some shots...I could upload the hi res trees again, but I don't wanna backstab mate Uufflakke...he made them and his links are down, dunno why but that is not my business here at all. Hi good right.

The shots are some of his hi res trees (maybe one downsized to 1024x1024) and hires desert/MTO ones and SAS~farang65 and UP~Boomer's new trees.

I've downloaded trial version of plant factory

its a pity you can't save any work in the trial version to export int 3d's etc.
