The Fokker Dr.I Dreidecker (triplane) was a World War I fighter aircraft built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. The Dr.I saw widespread service in the spring of 1918. It became renowned as the aircraft in which Manfred von Richthofen gained his last 19 victories, and in which he was killed on 21 April 1918.

Richthofen first flew 102/17 on 1 September 1917 and shot down two enemy aircraft in the next two days. He reported to the Kogenluft (Kommandierender General der Luftstreitkräfte) that the F.I was superior to the Sopwith Triplane. Richthofen recommended that fighter squadrons be reequipped with the new aircraft as soon as possible. The combat evaluation came to an abrupt conclusion when Oberleutnant Kurt Wolff, Staffelführer of Jasta 11, was shot down in 102/17 on 15 September, and Leutnant Werner Voss, Staffelführer of Jasta 10, was killed in 103/17 on 23 September.

The remaining pre-production aircraft, designated Dr.I, were delivered to Jasta 11. Idflieg issued a production order for 100 triplanes in September, followed by an order for 200 in November. Apart from minor modifications, these aircraft were almost identical to the F.I. The primary distinguishing feature was the addition of wingtip skids, which proved necessary because the aircraft was tricky to land and prone to ground looping. In October, Fokker began delivering the Dr.I to squadrons within Richthofen's Jagdgeschwader I.

Compared to the Albatros and Pfalz fighters, the Dr.I offered exceptional maneuverability. Though the ailerons were not very effective, the rudder and elevator controls were light and powerful. Rapid turns, especially to the right, were facilitated by the triplane's marked directional instability.

The Dr.I was considerably slower than contemporary Allied fighters in level flight and in a dive. While initial rate of climb was excellent, performance fell off dramatically at higher altitudes due to the low compression of the Oberursel Ur.II, a clone of the Le Rhône 9J rotary engine. As the war continued, chronic shortages of castor oil made rotary operation increasingly difficult. The poor quality of German ersatz lubricant resulted in many engine failures, particularly during the summer of 1918.

The Dr.I suffered other deficiencies. The pilot's view was poor during takeoff and landing. The cockpit was cramped and furnished with materials of inferior quality. Furthermore, the proximity of the gun butts to the cockpit, combined with inadequate crash padding, left the pilot vulnerable to serious head injury in the event of a crash landing.

1) Please ensure that you have a working copy of DBW/DBW1916 or have the SAS AI Engines Hotkeys Mod (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,23327.0.html) working with SAS ModAct for 4.101m
2) After downloading extract the archive and put folder FokkerDr1 to your MODS, #SAS or #DBW folder within your Il-2 modded install directory.
3) Put folder 0_WW1Markings to your MODS, #SAS or #DBW folder. If needed, overwrite files. If you are 100% sure that you already have this folder, you can avoid this step
4) Later from folder Skins take folder Fokker_Dr1 and put it into your Paintschemes/Skins directory. Not needed, but highly recommended
5) Add listed lines to your air.ini, plane.ru and weapons.ru
6) REQUIRES DiffFM to run

Few notes regarding this plane, please read before asking:

6# Engine management:
Thanks to SAS~Anto for this plane there was developed special kind of advanced engine management. You can change current power on rotary engine in 3 ways: by changing magnetos, throttle and mixture. With Magento in setting one, throttle can be changed from 0% to 33% of power. Setting 2, maximal power is 66%, minimal 33%. At Magneto 1+2, maximal 100% minimal 66%.
Also you can change power by changing mixture level at the same time.

but I have a very strange behavior, the fokker DR1 doesn't move in the sky and remains static.... however the propeller turns !!

Although vpmedia's latest update seemed to have cured the AI hanging in mid air bug,I wonder if anyone else has had the experience of setting up a flight of four of the Dr1's no matter what altitude starting the mission and watching your wing mates dive toward the ground like their on a ground attack mission that you knew nothing about.It doesn't seem to matter what you do they will not stay in formation.Does the AI need some tweaking or is this a problem that only I'm having.It wouldn't be so bad except when your at 1500 facing four Camels or Spads and the rest of your flight is hunting gofers at 100 feet off the ground it's kinda disheartening.

I also have seen this. They dive down ward no matter what.
I use the tab key to rejoin which they do most of the time.

(UPDATE) After doing a little fiddling around I found by removing the AI_MOD_v3_0 folder that they all stay in formation,Although I have not yet experimented to see what effect this has on any of the other planes it would appear that it's this mod that is causing the undesirable effect.

After my post on Jan 06 on the AI_MOD_v3_0 having an undesirable effect on the Dr1's I have flown all the planes in DBW1916 without the mod and I don't see any change in them and the AI triplane's don't have the tendency to dive towards the ground even in my case in QMB none missions with the AI_MOD installed they all dive to ground level.So whatever I'm experiencing is in the AI_mod.

Hi, I have a strange problem with the Fokker DR1 when I fly in a simple editor that's fine but when I fly with bots bots are hanging in the air, and IL-2 is buggy. Game prevryashaetsya in the slide show, if there was anyone taoke and how to solve this problem?

Hey guys, I'm very new to gaming and I have a question about the throttle on the DrI in the game.
I know they had various "throttles" on rotary engines, altering the amount of fuel flow, blip switches cutting electricity to the plugs, switches that killed 3 or 6 of the cyclinders.
As it is now, I start the engine and it runs up to full RPMs.
To land, I cut the engine totally.

Any help?

High Warren, in the game, you'll need to set up controls for your magneto switches. This is how you will adjust your throttle in the Dr.1. It works, but you still have limited control over the throttle.

Basically:

1 Magneto = 33% power
2 Magneto = 66% power
and 1=2 Magneto = 100% power

and to land, you still may find it necessary to cut the engine completely...  ;D

Gunny, if you download the latest VPmedia patch it should be in there with all the other WW1 airplanes, and their latest updates.
The pack has almost everything.

Hello, great plane, it flies very well and looks nice.

One problem i have is that the AI does not work good with it, when spawned in mid-air the plane hangs there frozen, when spawned on a runway the AI starts the engine but then just sits there doing nothing, only when i fly one myself and engage the AI while flying it seems to work correctly.

Downloaded the plane 14-01-2015.
I have IL2 1946 with the IL-2 4.12.2m Mega Patch from this site and the following mods;

I have the frozen ai in mid-air issue too. And also, if i spawn more than 1 AIs, they lag my game well.

I'm no expert but I think the Dr 1 is a 4.10 a/c and is not really suited for 4.12.2......
I've just loaded 8 Dr 1's in my DBW1916 setup and they fly beautifully  :)

LOD100 before = 25969 polys
LOD100 after   = 22203 polys (-14,5%)

LOD200 before = 25969 polys
LOD200 after   =   6521 polys (-74,8%)

LOD400 before = 7818 polys
LOD400 after   =   805 polys (-89,7%)

LOD1000 before = 4004 polys
LOD1000 after   =   737 polys (-81,77%)

LOD2000 before = 2676 polys
LOD2000 after   =   140 polys (-94,7%)

Multiply by the number of planes that the mission includes and you will get the savings from your system.

 Thank You again this works very well.
As for the FPS I used QMB and put 32 Dr-1 in the game .
My FPS held was 79 to 90 FPS  with that many planes...Looks good to me.. ;)

No matter what, DR.1 still just hangs out stationary in the air with its propeller spinning.  And the other version, the one we were told to try, is unusable.  In QMB, you select it, can can't access it, and is invisible when you play the mission.  So one version doesn't move, and another version doesn't work.  And we still have no answers as to why.  I guess we're just never going to get a usable Fokker Dr.I in this game.
