Title: Contest: Re-create an Historical Photograph.
Post by: BravoFxTrt on November 04, 2012, 12:04:55 PM
Hey every body. You wnat to participate in A contest set up for the Re-creation of real life images/photo's, only using IL2 moded or un moded, This Idea was brought up by our Distinguished Artist/Skinner. max_thehitman     https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?action=profile;u=3223
What do you guys think about it. Also to keep it nice and neat and allays on topic, We need a volunteer to Moderate only this thread. Post comments and feelings about this new Contest. Ideas welcome, but Max has pretty much said it all. ;)

R.O.E.
1. Start Posting your Art, After a Historical Aviation Photo is Picked for the Initial Contest Photo to begin the Contest.

2. Then, we have exactly 15 days (2 weeks) to post our screenshots that come as close to the original photo as
possible. Color or black and white , it don´t matter. You can post ONLY 2 screenshots. Make sure
to post your name on them, for the vote.

3. All the screenshots posted are collected by name and put up for a public vote on a weekend,
like Saturday and Sunday. After 2 days vote, whom ever wins gets to choose the next photograph
for everyone to re-create that aviation event.

4. So there can be 2 contests every month and many screenshots for everyone to post.

5. Moderator for the Contest is Ice~Eagle. His rules/words are official and final, and will not be contested. Thanks to all to cooperate. This is for FUN and Awesome Eye Candy for us Old Farts and young alike, lol.

Ice~Eagle Has the Honor of Picking the initial Photo, as to give every one an Idea of how it is done. Thank you. There After, "Let The Games Begin"!!

Good show man, I like it  8) Groooovy!

We practicly have all the airplanes in IL-2 flying around to recreate historical WW1, WW2,
Korean-War and Vietnam-War photographs....and if you search for them, you can even
find a great skin for the real airplane too.

Sounds fun! Let's have try!

What would be the requirements/rules?

We used to have a very similar contest a few years back on another flight-sim-art forum. It was
great fun and gets you motivated to try out new screenshot-styles and airplanes.
The rules were simple.
One person starts off by posting an historical photograph, of any era and any war. Then we have
exactly 15 days (2 weeks) to post our screenshots that come as close to the original photo as
possible. Color or black and white , it don´t matter. You can post ONLY 2 screenshots. Make sure
to post your name on them, for the vote.
All the screenshots posted are collected by name and put up for a public vote on a weekend,
like Saturday and Sunday. After 2 days vote, whom ever wins gets to choose the next photograph
for everyone to re-create that aviation event.
So there can be 2 contests every month and many screenshots for everyone to post.
That is how it worked.

Hmm.. It's pretty nice to see such thread being started. I love the idea, it's interactive in a special way and is definitely a thread to monitor from time to time.
I'm going to post only one screenshot for now though:

So how exactly are you guys getiing them to fly in such close formation? Or are those screens of the Tomahawks & P-51s foto-chopped?

So how exactly are you guys getiing them to fly in such close formation? Or are those screens of the Tomahawks & P-51s foto-chopped?

FMB. For my Tomahawk shot I placed 5 separate AI planes on whatever map and made them fly on the same path with just few meters distance from each other. I then set all the required skins and positioned myself in the leading aircraft. >Mission saved >Fly and just as it hits 100% on the loading screen you hit the Pause button. One must act swiftly as the "formation" brakes as soon as the mission loads. I then turned the mouse so the pilot will look to the left (4.11 was used for this shot), external view, some fine positioning of the angle and voila. Some slight color corrections in PS and it's all done.
You can always use the help of some online buddies too, for even better results. I don't have that much friends flying IL-2 though...
As far as I can see the Mustang "screen" is accomplished entirely by using Photoshop. Every single P-51 is cut out from original in-game screenshots and is then perfectly positioned over a cloudy sky photograph to match the real photo as best as it gets. I might be wrong though, please correct me if that's the case.

Cheers
Gargoyle

HURRAY thanks guys!
Now let me see... for the next historical photo I'll stay in the delicious WWII times. A Messerschmitt Bf-109 of 11/JG 53 sits in the sun on Sicily a few months before the attack on Rouleau's flight. "Yellow 2" as it has been called also sports the Ace of Spades emblem on its snout. I chose this one because it has a really nice setting and I love the second 109 flying in the background. Show some creativity, camera positioning and timing skills  :) Have fun!
P.S. bonus points for an opened canopy  ;)

Best regards

Nope, you got to know how to make an invisible Pilot for it to work.

As you can see in the pic, the canopy is open!!!
inset shows canopy missing. It dissappears as soon as I press eject.

EDIT: tried it with a couple of other aircraft. This only happens with the 109 ????
