Title: Typhoons over Normandy - New campaign!
Post by: SAS~Poltava on July 22, 2012, 02:21:59 AM
Inspired by the fact that Crazyflak and 101tfs has given us a completely rewamped Hawker Typhoon (and as a sort of "thank-you" to them and all involved) I have made this campaign for it:

You are a RAF pilot, flying in a Typhoon Squadron, and given the supremely important and dangerous job of attacking German ground installations and troops. The Luftwaffe has been pushed back, but are still a major threat.

You can download it here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=1315

It is a semi-historical, 9-mission static campaign, set during the early summer of 1944, portraying the fighting over Normandy before, during and after the Overlord landings in the summer of 1944. In the initial phase you will participate in the campaign against German coastal defense radars, but also go on the odd mission against "Noball" targets, i.e. V1 bases. Later you will give the troops landing in Normandy much needed ground support. All missions are based on history in some way, and follows the action of the actual day. I have also tried to follow the actual weather.

This is part 1, covering the war in Normandy up until June 10 and the famous so called "Dinner raid", when an entire German Panzer Corps headquarters was eliminated by Typhoons. (The upcoming part 2 will cover the rest of the Normandy campaign up until the Falaise pocket battles.)

The map used is "Circus" by Catsy and I/JG2_Assi - it gives us the whole area from the UK down to Normandy. As the map is pretty demanding in itself on your computer, I have decided to leave out most of the action that you can't actually see (or possibly could see) from your cockpit. But there still IS a lot of going on down there on the ground, which is unavoidable as you are hunting for ground targets. (And you will always be able to find “targets of opportunity” besides the actual mission targets.)

If you are having problems with the FPS I recommend that for example you perhaps try and use a less demanding effects MOD’s. (I love Gurners FX's, but for this campaign I had to switch back to the stock effects, but then again my rig is over 5 years old.)

REQUIREMENTS: This version of the campaign should work in any of the newer 4.101 compatible MOD-packs, like HSFX 6 and Ultrapack 3. It has been built in Dark Blue World 1.7 though, and if you have DBW you have everything that the offline-player needs. No extra download is needed, except that I STRONGLY recommend that you get Crazyflak’s new Typhoon, which completely updates the old “frankenplane” version – the new one is a beauty. You can find the new “Tiffie” here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,26690.0.html

In order to make this campaign playable even if you don’t use Crazyflak’s new Typhoon (you are crazy if you don’t) I have decided to use the old arming options, even though they aren’t 100% historical – Crazyflak’s new load-outs are. This campaign also comes with skins, as the new version is fully skinnable, but if you use the old version of the Typhoon it will just ignore them.

With the download comes seven skins, most of them by Texx (thanks man!), and made for the new Typhoon. More of his skins for the Typhoon can be found here:

Hey many thanks for this, I will DL this when I come back home. In two weeks I will embark on the most dangerous task any fighterpilot had to do. :)
Your continious work to give our planes something to do is very much needed. Many thanks

Hi Poltava, many thanks.  :)

Just tried to run the campaign. Set the rank to "Flying Officer" as recommended, but I get a warning that IL-2 campaign manager has changed the mission because the rank isn't enough to fly plane 1, or words to that effect. No matter which rank I choose, the same warning appears, and the game crashes at 100% mission load.

I'm on DBW 1.71 with Crazyflak's new Typhoons.

AFAIK that is a problem connected with Mission Pro Combo. Do you use that Mod?

Hi Poltava, thanks for the reply.  :)

Yes, I use Mission Pro Combo.

I've run a quick test with the a single Typhoon in a QMB scramble mission on the same map with no problems.

I've produced logs for both this test, and mission 1 of your campaign, but can find no difference in the listed errors between the two, but this warning appears in the campaign mission log:

WARNING: TRenderManager::TriangleList_ProjectiveShadow()- internal buffer overflow.
[15:22:45] Too many vertexes or faces per shadow hier mesh!

I'm running on an integrated chipset, and my guess is that it can't take the load. I'll edit the mission in FMB and run another test to see if I can root out the cause.

Cheers mate.  :)

There you go: problem IS obviously with Mission Pro Combo. And belive me, the 1st mission is NOT very demanding FPS-wise.

So disable Mission Pro Combo and everything should be fine.

Sorry mate, Mission Pro Combo's not the problem. I disabled it with the same result.

I've conducted a few more tests in FMB:

First, I removed all static objects, leaving just moving vehicles, ships and AC; Same 100% load crash.
Secondly, I removed everything but the AC; same again.
Last up, I reduced the AC to a single flight; no crash.

Weird, ain't it?  ;D

P.S. Next up, I'll set up 12 Typhoons in a scramble on an different map, to see what happens.

Stay tuned......

A short while later.....

100% crash on On two different maps. So its nowt to do with your campaign mate.

Cheers Poltava.  ;)

Thanks Poltava for this!!

I´ve got a furious dogfight right in the begining and then have got some damage on my plane on D Day first sortie. I also manged to have multiple scores against convoys, no peace to those trucks and armoured.

Until now, mission 6 all is good, I am still alive!  ;D

I had a similar issue with 100% crash on mission loading. I looked back at the main thread for the Typhoon and it seems that there is some issues with it involving a class file.

I did as some of the others and removed the class file 21C7DD1C66D55376 and all works perfectly for me now. I believe Crazyflak is updating the aircraft and correcting these issues but in the mean time the removal of the class file seems to fix any problems.

Hope this helps and oh Poltava, another brilliant campaign!

Note: if you are seeing some weird skin effects on the Typhoons it probably means that you are using a game installation with the OLD Typhoon. There is a simple way to fix this: download the latest version of the campaign at mission4today (see link above) and in it you will find a folder with campaign files that are adjusted so this problem disappears.

Sorry about the inconvenience  :(

Finally got this great campaign up and running, thanks to the fixed Typhoons from Crazyflak; thanks Poltava.  :)

Despite disabling Mission Pro Combo I still can't choose to lead the mission, whichever rank I select. The best it lets me have (and the only way I can control any events) is the lead in flight 3. Is this the way it should work mate? Forgive my ignorance, I don't play many campaigns.  :-[

June 7, after a low level attack on convoys I´ve got myself into the crossfire of another Typhoon and the convoy.

Having been hit by rocket shrapnels of that Tiffy I lost one main gear and had to belly land in Omaha...

Good to hear!

Well, it is not imperative that you are the Squadron Commander, even though it's more fun to direct the whole attack yourself. So being just a Flight Commander is not against the idea of the campaign. Hope you still can enjoy it!  ;)

Fantastic work!

I do have a comment and a question though:

I have long tried to get fighters to fly in 'squadron formation' in the FMB, but with no luck. Like most others I have seen, you have to line up the flight with perfect timing and positioning.

BUT, when flying fighter-bomber (or fighters armed with bombs), you CAN get squadron formations by setting the main flight as target for the remaining flights at waypoints.  (Maybe you knew this off course)

This is actually not a lot of work (did it for this campaign), and it looks so much more right and awesome seing these fearsome machines flying together rather than 'queing up' and gunning for France.

Thanks for you hard work- and hope that part 2 is not that far away!

TICI - I will have a look at this, trying to edit the mission in HSFX, to see if I can get to run there. Having a campaign to run smoothly in both HSXF and DBW would be nice  :D

Yes, it is. It's just that I am heavily involved in some other projects as well, right now. But "Typhoons over Normandy, part 2" will come. In that one you are based on the continent, and fly from one of those new bases in the beachhead, as they indeed did historically.  :)

Using TFM install. 25 mins into Mission 5 (D-Day) and my game (and computer) suddenly froze. Did the three finger salute and got the error message "IL-2 6Dof/TIR Enabled Executed for modded IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 has stopped working". Funny thing was, Task Manager indicated that IL-2 6Dof/TIR was still running, but Sturmovik was not responding. I had a similar error flying the BoB section of Monty's JG 53 Campaign, I think I ended reinstalling TFM and starting the campaign all over again. Don't really want to have to do that again this time - I'm sick of looking at the English Channel!

Anybody have any ideas how to resolve this problem?

PS: Great campaign (so far) Poltava, looking forward to pt 2 when you are ready.

Cheers

It is a pain in the butt - but that's a bit extreme ???

Actually, never had this problem before installing TFM, so must be a conflict in there somewhere. Might just migrate fully to 4.11.1 and bypass it.

I don't think that this error is campaign related.

Another thing: I also think that water, water and water can be a tedious, so why not cheat a little bit and use "Time shift", just to get you to the next waypoint? I know I do, not seldom...  ;)
Title: Re: Typhoons over Normandy - New campaign!
Post by: vegetarian on March 05, 2013, 09:19:17 PM
Yea, I think it is TFM, not campaign related. Strangely, I opened mission 5 in FMB, saved it as a single mission and it few without any problems. Love the Normandy landings - flew around a bit just to take in the view!

Any solution yet on the issue as posted on Nov.08 ?. On HSFX 6.017 everything works well except the fact that cannot save the missions. The campaign always starts back without saving the progress done,

a fast and rough one: open that mission in FMB, then just save it. And then have another go.

Just information; I upgraded to 4.12.1, Mod Act 520. I installed this campaign and had to use the old campaign due to conflicts with the skins. Attempting to "Apply" the first mission, the yellow cursor froze on the button. Any attempt to remedy caused the game to crash, and I got the "IL-2 6Dof/TIR enabled, executable...." message. My solution was to start disabling Jsgme options. The culprit was "Mission Pro Combo by PAL." I substituted "Mission Pro Combo by P.A.L." and that solved the problem.

Perhaps by then we will have DBW using 4.12, so that we all can taxi our rocket-laden Typhoons out on the Normandy airstrips...  ;)
