Title: Breguet 19 (Lorraine/Elizade/Hispano) - update 01 [4.10]
Post by: Dreamk on June 08, 2012, 01:05:12 AM
To complete this first part of the SCW two-seaters aircraft (I need take a break for the week-end, but next week will see hopefully more surprises) here's one of the symbols of this conflict, an aircraft that stamped its mark on  world aviation history - the Breguet 19.
Here too, as for the Potez 25, numerous versions evolved, with various engines and armament.
In Spain the Br19 was present in various versions:
The Lorraine engined Br19 was bought from France in the early 20s then licensed produced, soon with a local version of the Lorraine engine - the Elizade.
Then the aircraft was licensed produced with an Hispano engine that gave it its characteristic nose shape.
The original standard armament included one frontal pilot fixed synchronized Vickers MkI or II, and a double Lewis MkII/III on a TO observer turret (a French version of the Scarff ring). An additional Lewis was included to be used by the observer through a small opening under the rear fuselage, but was generally discarded.
In Spain the frontal gun was generally dismounted, but could be still seen on original Lorraine or Elizade engined aircraft. Later produced Hispano engined aircraft did not usually sport this frontal armament, and often used a British Scarff ring instead of the French TO turret.
A modification of this plane often seen in Spanish skies was built in order to replace the twin Lewis turret by a much more potent Vickers K on a Fairey Fast Gun Mount (identical to the one mounted on the Swordfish).
The bomb load was rather consistant for the period. The fuel load too - as a matter of fact this aircraft was packed with fuel tanks and bombs compartments inside a fuselage made of thin aluminium sheet forward and fabric rearward - one an easily imagine what happened to these planes when shoot at by an enemy fighter, even lightly armed.

Notes:
1) The pilots wear the white "mono" flying suit, typical of pre-civil war Spanish Air Arm, often seen on aircrews in the early phases of the conflict.
2) I have included 3 variants of the cockpit showing various arrangements known to have been used for the windows and gunsight/bombsight, in this aircraft where frontal vision was almost absent due to the upper wing struts arrangements.
2) The Type D Internal vertical bomb rack, with its characteristic protrusion under the fuselage, will not appear on the QMB selection screen,  when the suitable armament is selected, but will appear on the model.
3) Similarly the Type F "under fuselage cut" will not be displayed on the QMB but will correctly appear on the model.

This plane has a quite special cockpit, with an almost totally obscured frontal view due to the large supporting strut for the upper wing. It's a wonder pilots saw anything at all. So it's a challenge to pilot this in enemy skies.

Thanls a lot, DreamK and agracier for another great plane) Your work is outstanding)
I see one thing - when I look back to my Breget's tail, with a normal (Page Down-key)view  in a standard keyboard, there is a transparend interval between rear part of fuselage and vertical part of tail... I mean I see a small part of fuselage, then nothing. and then a normal little bit of tail)
Maybe, It's only my combuter's bug)
Regards, Andrei)

Well, I warned everyone about that cockpit rear view bug before uploading this series of planes (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,24702.msg269081.html#msg269081)  :(
Cockpits are still a problem (don't look back - the rear cockpit views are awful sometimes) but there is improvement on this point, and if you zoom on the instruments panels you may have some pleasant surprizes on some planes. It's only the beginnning... :)
Title: Re: Breguet 19 (Lorraine/Elizade / Hispano) Ready to DL
Post by: Birdman on June 08, 2012, 05:12:09 AM
I attached some fixes:
- The propeller of Hispano variants now rotates when engine is running.
- I centered the Hispano propellers and Lorraine damaged propeller better.
- I repositioned engine, tail, pilot, left aileron and bomb bay doors to avoid any holes.
- I removed misplaced rear faces of rotating propeller spinners.

Any there some FM updates coming? Now some planes are suffering from severe engine overrevving and some can fly a lot faster than expected, in some cases even accelerate over VNE at SL in level flight.

Thanks a lot for this great and needed plane!

The icon of the early stages of SCW!!!

And an excellent target for my Legion Condor virtual fellow!

About the weapon , to avoid missing update what about add the release date at the download name?

Ex: actually "_Arms_Spain" can be named "_Arms_Spain v20120608" for example so when we real to download new version of them we can immediately check at the download if we have the last or not.....

All the best!

To find out if I have the correct version, I noticed the end of the download address:
France : 63
Spain : 73w

To each his own method!  :D

Yes , the FM update is being worked - we wait for all these planes to be flying before upfdating as quite a number of them share the same engine families.

Hi DreamK,

Thank you so much for this treasure trove of aircraft, a true gift for campaign makers.

I've been able to install most of your work except for two of the two-seaters. The Breguet causes a 70% ctd and the GL's cause a 20% ctd.

I'm running DBW 1.7.1 with the latest buttons, Diff_FM and updated French & Spanish weapons. As far as I can tell there are no issues with any of my .ini files (70% ctd), and the Spanish & French bombs work fine on all your other aircraft (20% ctd?).

Thanks again,
Sillius_Sodus

Hi, Laufer. This skin looks good. I'm doing a SCW two seater mission pack. People have done Yugoslav, Dutch, Greek, and Bolivian skins for these planes. So, I'll release the SCW pack as a separate thing. Then I'll do a Greek,Yugoslav etc two seater pack. There will be a mission for the CantZ501 in it too.

This is a most welcome aircraft, as this was VERY important in the first phase of the Spanish Civil War, used by both sides.

I really we can get both Nationalist and Republican skins for this beauty. Any takers?  ;) See below.

I myself would say that Nationalist skins are a priority, as the aircraft already has a nice Republican default skin!

Yes indeed, and it's why if your have been curious enough to look inside the folder, you'll find inside the cockpit folder a folder, presently unused, called Breguet_19P, as I intend to give the Lorraine Br19 a "Polish instruments"  cockpit

This highly interesting - I was unaware that Br19 equipped the Vickers K on Fairey Fast Gun Mount served outside Spain - it was supposed to have been a local version, fruit of the collaboration between Hispano and Fairey, that was to evolve till it was cut short at the Outbreak of Civil War, due to the more than ambiguous position of the UK government (not to say blatantly that they supported, and not only  than "morally", Franco's uprising)
BTW I always refrained to use the terms Br19A2 or Br19B2 are they are "functionnal" denomination - the same basic plane could be equipped in the field, using "kits" such as bomb containers, etc.., for A2 missions (A= corps d'armee = reconnaissance, armed reconnaissance and liaison) or B2 missions (B=bombardment)  - as a matter of fact there were also a number of subdivisions depending of the sub-type of mission designed - therefore the official instructions manuals emphasized the differences according to the fixed modifications such as engines, turret mount etc...

Hi,Dreamk. Like the SIS agent flying Franco around at the start of the coup? Ever since the UK owned Gibraltar, they've been concerned as to who controls the Iberian peninsular. A hostile power controlling it could mean an attack on Gibraltar, and lost access to the Mediterranean. They couldn't send an expeditionary force to help Franco. They'd become moral lepers if they did that. They'd just begun re arming against Hitler. So giving his friend support wasn't on.  They couldn't sink Russian ships bringing supplies to the Republicans. War with the [former] USSR wasn't on. They were trying to get it on side.

So, they hit on the 'Non Intervention' idea, and the League of Nations arms embargo. Spanish waters would be patrolled by League of Nations members. Ships carrying war materials to either side could be stopped, and dealt with. It hurt the Republicans more than the Nationalists. Especially after they took the ports up north. The Germans were in the Neutrality patrol. But they were very selective in enforcing it. So, the UK government got what they wanted in the end. A 'friendly' nationalist government controlling Spain, and posing no threat to Gibraltar. Not a Soviet puppet state. At that level, politics is often not a very nice business.

cheers

Tested in 412 and got them working with a gunsight view bug: in all planes except the HV the gunsight is not centered but on the right so when in gunsight view I see only the central strut and can't aim....on the HV the gunsight is little more centered but since this version haven't guns....

EDIT (for clarification)

The wrong isn't the gunsight position in the model but the 412.1 gunsight view management when zoom in the view position....
