Title: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: SAS~CirX on July 16, 2009, 03:19:21 AM
5% crash on loading indicates

~You just upgraded Il2. During this you missed an SFS file Somewhere. Go back and repeat.

~You just installed a mod enabler. Then , also you might have missed an SFS file (could happen with some enablers) or, your copy of IL2 is a direct to drive copy bought over the internet. That means One of your SFS files and some of your dlls are spiked by UBI. The fix for this is here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1531.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1531.0.html)

~Somehow your soundsetting is something other than 44.1KHz, and this is somehow screwing everything else. I personally have never been able to reproduce this crash. But know about it anyway, Access your sound settings through the IL2Setup.exe , or IL2SET.exe in your game folder. This seems to apply only to old UI installations anyway. One of those "funny little spies" :D

~You did nothing and now there is a 5% crash. One of your SFS files somehow got lost or corrupted. Count them and replace them if needed. Copy all SFS files over from a backup of your game

...you did make a backup right....

the 70% crash troubleshooter

a Much rarer crash, but more tricky to pin down.

70% cdt indicates a conflict between one of your ini files (static.ini, technic.ini or chiefs.ini ) and actual new objects in your mod files

To fix it you need to find out which line in any of those .ini's points to a worngly installed or missing object. Best thing is to revrt to backup and start over.

the 60% crash troubleshooter

This article assumes that you have a modded version of IL2 that worked in the past, but that now crashed to desktop at 60% load after you installed a new plane.

Here is a step by step guide that will get you out of it 99.9 % of the time.

The 60% crash explained :

60 % crashes are caused by a broken chain of reference between your games air.ini file, the contents of your mods folder, and your buttons file.

When you load the game, it boots up these three things in the following way.

1) It loads the air.ini file, which tells it what planes to load.
2) It then goes to look for these planes, first in your mods folder, and if it doesn’t not find them there, it looks for them in your game’s own “SFS” files.
3) When it finds the plane, the plane’s files will tell it which Flightmodel data’s needed for that plane. Flightmodel data is contained in the Buttons file.

If at any stage in this process, the game is told to look for something and it cannot find it, it will crash back to desktop at 60% loading time.

Steps for fixing your 60% crash:

Step 1:

Open up your main IL2 Sturmovik 1946 folder, that’s the one with your IL2fb.exe file in it. Click Search at the top of the window, enter the search term “BUTTONS”, with the parameters shown in the picture, and do a search of your Il2 Sturmovik 1946 folder.

NOTE: These screens were taken for an article I wrote for AAA, where the old "Files" folder is still used. People who uses the SAS Modactivator, your Buttons file will be inside your STD/Gui/Game file in the MODSs folder.

You should only have 1 buttons file, and it will be located in 1 of the two following places

…\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Files\GUI\GAME\buttons

or

… \IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Mods\STD\GUI\GAME\buttons

It can be in either of these places, but if there is a buttons file in BOTH places, the game will ONLY load the one in the mods folder. So make sure that  THATis the one you updated. Delete the other one to be sure.

Step 2: Download the latest buttons file from our Activators and Utilities forum, and MAKE SURE you replace yours with it as per the instructions there.

So, now you should have the LATEST buttons file for YOUR type of mod activation, and it should be at …\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\GUI\GAME\buttons

And there must be NO OTHER buttons files in your game directory. If you can confirm all of that, but still have a 60% crash, move on to step 3.

Step 3 : Open up your air.ini file. The air.ini file you want to use is found here:

..\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\STD\com\maddox\il2\objects\air.ini

(Read the article I wrote on customizing your air ini file in the school forum)

Find the place where you entered the line for the new plane(s) you installed just before your game started crashing to 60%.
Disable it by placing “//” in front of the entry

SAVE the air.ini file, and try to relaunch your game. If it still crashes, repeat this step with every entry of new plane in your air.ini going backwards in time. See after each disable whether your game will start. At some stage it will. That is when you will know which plane is causing the crash.

If you had to disable more than one plane, go back and re-enable (Remove the “//”) them one by one, except of course for the one that first fixed the crash issue when you disabled it. This is unless you are SURE that the plane you disabled is the only one causing trouble.

Once you have done all of that, you can move on to step 4:

Step 4: Fixing the air.ini entries and plane files.

Go to your computer and find the file you downloaded for your new plane.

If it is an auto Installer, don’t auto install it again. Use 7zip or something similar to EXTRACT to contents of the installer to another folder, as if it was a zip file.

Inside it you will find a txt document that will give you a line to add to the air.ini file. Sometimes this info is not in the file you downloaded, but the author would then have written it in the post where you got it from.

Most of them will also give you lines to add to other files, like planes_ru.properties, but you need not worry about those now. Plane_ru and weapons_ru are not needed for your game to load a plane, they just add cosmetics in the game itself. So don’t worry about them now.

Now, compare the entry that the mod-maker provided for your air ini file with the entry you have

Verify that they are 100% identical. Copy and paste again if necessary.
Verify that there are no DUPLICATE entries for that plane in your air.ini file

If you have deduced that the crash is caused by the entries of more than one plane, repeat this step for all of them.

When you have fixed all the lines of errors (if there were any), don’t forget to re-enable them by removing your “//” from the entry, if it is still there.

Now, SAVE your air.ini file, and re-launch the game. If it boots, verify that your new plane is available in QMB. If it is not, that a whole different issue, but at least it is not a 60% crash.

If your game still crashes at 60%, move on to step 5:

Step 5:

If you have gotten this far, and your game still crashes at 60%, then the problem is in your mods folder, in the folder of the plane you installed.

Go back tot he file you downloaded and re-extract the files. Dont use windows' own extractor, it does not work. 7zip is recomended. You must be sure that you have extracted all the files, so use reliable software.

Then repaste the folder that has to be put in your mods folder, to the mods folder, Delete the old one in your mods folder. Verify that the file you downloaded is the same as the one you put in your mods folder, like the picture show and ect.

NOTE: A COMMON MISTAKE:

A Common mistake people make is to paste the aircraft folder into the mods folder at the wrong file depth. In other words, in the file I downloaded, there was a folder called “MODS”

And inside the mods folder was a folder called SPITMK1, and inside that was a folder called 3DO and so on.

The level at which it must be pasted into the mods folder is with the 3do folder on the second tier.

In other words, the file structure will follow
…IL2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\SPITMK1\3DO

If you have done this properly, your game should start. If it still crashes, then there is a conflicting mod in your mods folder. Go on to step 6

Step 6 :

If there is a conflicting mod in your mods folder, you can disable it by placing a “-“ in front of it.. Do this until you find the culprit. But BEWARE:

If you disable a NEW SLOT mod plane in your mods folder, you must ALSO disable it’s entry in the air.ini file, other wise you will just cause a NEW 60% crash.

Good Luck!

Very nicely done, thanks.

Just one little additional advice, set your conf.ini to log the loading of the game

[HotKey Console]
LOG=1
LOGTIME=1
LOGFILE=log.lst (you can choose the name that you like)
LOGKEEP=0 (with option =1 will keep all the logs and the file will quickly become very heavy)

the loading of the game will be logged on your log.lst file (or any other you have chosen). In case of a 60% (and in many cases of 70%) crash you can trace the loading error (flight model or other) and save a lot of time in investigating the cause.

Hello Mr CirX

One thing I would like to point out is a mistake that can often happen and that is leading to the dreadfull 60%.crash !

Actually most MODS we download are in zip or rar form. When we open the zip ,or else,  we use to copy and paste ( as instructed ) the MOD folder into our Il2-1946 MODS folder. We then check our air.ini, ru properties and weapons ru properties, and of course we also check if we have the last buttons installed . Then , with full self confidence we launch the game  and get the crash at 60%. WHY , WHY , WHY
Well,  most of the time we do not check into our MODS folder to see if the mod we just installed is complete.I mean we forget to compare what is inside  our mod after we put it in the MODS folder , with what it contains in his zipped form.
I experienced more than once ( in fact 4 times ) that all the class files were missing when the copy-paste method was used.

I hope that this explanation will be of some use to anybody and , please forgive my bad english.

It would be nice if people who has experienced the same phenomenom could post .

CirX,

Thank you for the detailed trouble shooting guide. It enabled me to get the P-38G-H series flying in UP2. I loaded fine, but got the ''NULL' error as soon as the program (QMB) got to the aircraft load.

TOO MANY BUTTONS!!!!

This may help someone else who gets this error message  at the aircraft load point.

Well done!!!

Now I'm confused because in your guide about troubleshooting 60% crashes, you seem to say you can only have one buttons file. Only trouble is, when you have Ultrapack and want to use the switcher to run HSFX instead of UP, there has to be the buttons file under the "files" folder structure also. Otherwise HSFX will not run. It also has to have its own air.ini file it runs from.

And also I can't seem to get mods I added later into the mods folder to run in HSFX, they only run in UP. If I try to run the mods folder ( without a dash in front of it ) after I switch to HFSX, I get the 60% crash. If I put the dash back in front of the mods folder, then I can run HSFX once again. But of course those extra planes aren't in my HSFX. For example, just before AAA shut down, I downloaded and installed the Wellington bomber and the Shinden and got them running in UP, no problem. Then I later came here and got the P-47B and TA-183 Huckebein Light. Since they went into the mods folder, they are the ones I can't run in HSFX, have to put that dash in there. I can only fly those four planes in UP, never HSFX!!

I thought I'd copy the same air.ini file I use in my mods folder to the 'files' folder so HSFX would try to run the added on planes but I then get a 50% crash error, similar to the 60% one. I had to put the HSFX version of the air.ini back in the 'files' folder ( luckily I had saved it ) and all is well again but still can't get the extra add-on planes to run in HSFX of course.

You can have a buttons file in files, but the one in your mods folder will load over it, so it is the one you have in mods that will count.

HSFX, which was packed by my good freind CharlieChap, is FOR SEOW, made by SEOW PLAYER, for SEOW ONLY.

Since his SFS use makes such sense and is such an advanced feature, he gratiously made the HFSX sfs archives available to UP, with a few things added, so they could build their next pack using it as a base.

Ultra Pack IS THE PUBLIC VERSION OF HSFX. Unless you are a DEDICATED SEOW PLAYER, you should not use HSFX. Some sites tell guys to use HSFX, but that desicion has more to do with spite against UP, than with what is best for players. CharlieChap helped the UP guys get UP2.0 together, so that it could be a common offline/online pack for casual players like us, and so it could have all the extras and fiddly bits that are not used in SEOW campaigns.

This is why, even though I am great friends with the SEOW guys, and with Charlie, the I do not recommend that you install pure HSFX, unless you know what SEOW is, and it is a big part of your yearly social planning. Get UP (which contains HSFX anyway) and be done with it.

If you get into further hassles adding extra mods to UP, open a tech help topic here or at UP, we will gladly help you.

Another big 'Thanks' for this troubleshooter [my first 'Thanks' was back in May, at Reply #7].  After upgrading my buttons file with the latest one, and then downloading the new Float Swordfish, I stumbled at the 60% CTD.  Following these excellent instructions, I found that the upgrade UP buttons did not overwrite the previous version and 'buttons' files were all over the place.
When that was sorted out, and with 60% CTD still happening, I isolated the Float Swordfish with the "//" with the result that the loading went normally.
So, for now, I will stick with the wheeled Swordfish until I can further troubleshoot the Float Swordfish download/install.
Thanks, SAS~CirX.

I think the floater swordfish is simply a case of downloading and putting the DiFFFM mod in your Mods folder. http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3988.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3988.0.html) , try it out.

Thanks, again.  I downloaded the DiFFFM mod and placed the file -- not the folder containing the file -- in the MODS/Swordfish-2 folder.  The sim loaded properly and the Float Swordfish showed up in QMB.

Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters

that means usually you are missing a weapons, or flyable cockpit mod, that the mod which is causing it needs. for example, if you have a new slot C-47, which requires the flyable C47 mod, and you dont have the flyable c47, you will ahave 20% crash.

Hi guys.

Sorry if this is the wrong board.

I am new to this whole modding thing so forgive my mistakes and ignorance in advance! ;D I wanted to install some 109 sounds and got the SAS activator pack. I backed up and I believe I installed correctly, but got the CTD at 60%. I did not download any button files or any newer versions of the files for the activator as it is a stock '46 4.09m.  :(

Any ideas?

Which modactivator did you install? better yet, post the question in the thread of that modact, and I will give it a shot. 60% are very simple to solve, but unfortunately, also very easy to cause, especially if you are new.

Hi..

I just tried to install the HSFX mod and now im getting crash at 5%. If i disable the mod it starts just fine (4.09m)
I tried to reinstall and replace the SFS files from the back up but it didn't help. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Edit: Oops seems like i had 4.08m  ;D Got 4.09m on my computer so I'll give it a shot first.
Edit: Okay, when the HSFX mod is enabled it says 4.09m and it crashes, but when it's disabled and it starts up it says 4.08m

sounds like you did something wrong along the way.
i'd recommend starting over with a fresh install, patched up to 4.09m before installing any mod versions.
make sure the default 4.09m loads up correctly before starting with the mods...

I installed it all over again. 4.09m was working fine before i started installing the mod. But after i installed HSFX theres no mod called HSFX History mod in jsgme. So a clan mate sent me that folder but it just crashes again. And when i disable the mod and start up it says 4.08m again.

Watch for the Game path with HSFX install. Some times it will rewrite to a folder inside the game folder.  Forgotten Battles.
If you have that that's the problem.

Hi, again great stuff Cirx and following your instructions saved me when I installed JapanCats Zero's. As is often the case the folder containing the mod files was not at the right 'depth' it should be C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\JCats_A6M_v20101118 and not C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\JCats_A6M_v20101118\JCats_A6M. A beginners fault, but it happens sometimes.  :-[

but you need to describe exactly what is happening with your game as well.....the logfile alone is not enough.....
but there are a few threads in the help section regarding Tiger's flyby sounds, maybe if you look through them, you will find a solution?  ???

the older buttons files (7.5) is actually for 4.09, so i wouldn't expect it to work on 4.10...
4.10 uses a slightly different buttons setup...stick with the buttons that comes with the modact (7.6) and you'll be fine....
4.09 and 4.10 buttons are NOT compatible.... ;)

Hello Everyone,

I wouldn't have bothered any of you with this because the guideline has been and is very useful, but I'm getting %70 crashes lately that I can't get rid of.

Now in the first page it mentions that the %70 crashes result from a conflict between the .ini files (static.ini, technics.ini or chiefs.ini) and the actual mods in the MODS folder. I use JSGME, which I have to admit although being somewhat tidier than the MODS way of doing it, also makes it harder to install or troubleshoot new mods since everyone talks MODS and not much else.
I'm not complaining... I just think that some would appreciate the thought (i.e. me).

Anyways, the last (and only) mod I've installed that required me to tinker with the above mentioned three .ini files was the [Cruisers]USS Chester,USS Houston,USS Portland by Sani, which I have uninstalled after realizing it was the cause of the problem (again would have been much easier if I hadn't used the JSGME). I am positive that I have deleted all the additions I've made into any .ini file, but unfortunately I neglected making backups of the original files.

My question is; are those three .ini files are the only ones that will cause that problem? Because even though I have uninstalled the mod (and reverted the prior changes) it still gives me the %70 CTD.

And if it's possible, would any of you care to supply me with the stock UP2.01 .ini files?

Thanks in advance
Looking forward to your response.

make sure that you have clean out completely the ini files and for the next time remember that when you set up a new mod first back up the modified files so that you can easily revert to previous configuration. The second advice would be not to use the JSGME for individual mods (unless you are an advanced modder), always place them in the MODS folder and they will still work.

Thanks Frankiek.

I wouldn't call myself an advanced modder, not for IL2 anyway, but I know my way around basic folder and file manipulation. I have more than half a dozen mods I've modified to work with JSGME, but I have to be honest I wasn't sure if the two (JSGME & MODS) would work together...

... Actually came to think of it... why wouldn't they?

I have changed those three .ini files with the unmodified ones (found under MODS) just to be sure, and I've took notice of the modification dates; all of them were the same (I've switched them before, wasn't sure if they were clean, they were).

That brings me to my initial question again; are those three (static, technics and chief) the only files responsible for %70 crash problem?

have you already looked in your console log (normally log.lst), you should get some indication there

Yes I have, but it wasn't very useful. In fact there was no sign of an error at all... which is curios because there used to be error messages all the time that I have come to expect.

You have written that buttons should be only in one place
… \IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Files\GUI\GAME\buttons
or
… \IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Mods\STD\GUI\GAME\buttons
But in which of these places? Or in it there is no difference

The first one is for UP (I think), and the second one is for SAS Modact =D
If you have SAS Modact, then it's in the MODS/STD/Gui/game folder =D

no lol. The SFS files are basically the game itself, an enormous amount! The thing to do, if you think you lost one, is to make a list here of all the SFS files in your main game directory, and put the list here, along with your game version info (4.09/4.10/4.101 ect) and what modact you have. Then we can see which one it is, and send that one if possible.

Oh, I know exactly what you did now (if, by "latest modact", you mean v2.72), You installed a modact for 4.101m, on a 4.10m install :)

Download and install the 4.101 official patch http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,8528.0.html and install it. You can install it right over your current 4.10 with Modact 2.72 install. Just be sure that any files in the MODS of FILES folder you may have fiddled with while trying to solve your problem are back to normal before proceeding to install other mods and stuff.

good luck!

Hi Milan, I was wondering what sort of computer or laptop you use, and what its specifications are? as a total crash means your system is either struggling very much, you don't have enough 'free space' on your Hard Disk Drive or some Operating System (Windows/Linux/Mac etc) problem(s).

Also if in doubt, re-read from the first post, this thread, then check the threads for what mod pack you choose, relax and try again when your less frustraited/worked up/lost in the woods for all the trees.

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Laptop, not really new but from 2008 i think. Normally I can play without problems on it, but when I installed Modact it did that. I have 55 Gb free space, should be ok.
I had already installed modact once, then it went back to desktop at 60%. I reinstalled the game, put another install of Modact on it + the buttons, and now this.

I have installed a clean Il2 1946 Disc with the patches in the correct order, and Modact 2.72, 4 times now. Latest 4.101 button. I cannot get the game to run beyond 70% and I get crash to desktop, and I'm damned if I can figure out what the problem is.  I have checked everything in the STD folder and it looks fine to me, anybody know of anything I might have missed.

the problem is that you are missing a java class for a static plane: the P-47D. It looks like that you are also running DiffFM. So inactivate all mods with JSGME (rigth sections empty), inactivate all mods (is sufficient to put a - in front of the folder name)  and try to run the game
Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: crazyeddie on March 20, 2011, 03:36:29 AM
Thanks Frankiek

I have no mods installed yet, all I have is the basic game with the patches installed in the correct order and JSGME, with DiffFM not activated yet, nothing else.  I start the game and it gets to 70% and crashed back to desktop.
So:
If I am missing a java class for a static plane how do I fix that ?  I would assume that comes with the original game disc, in which case I might be screwed because I have tried a reinstall 4 times and the same problem.

I might try removing the P47D references in STD and see if that works. (Nope, that didn't work either)

Thanks again for your quick reply, much appreciated.

PS:  Problem solved, downloaded all the patches from another site and did the whole damn thing again, got it working at last. Must have been a corrupt patch along the way.

20% CTD means a class problem, either a conflict between mods using the same class, or a missing or corrupted class file. for the 85% have you tried to look at the console log?

Male sure that you game is regularly patched up to 4.10.1m (Il2 1946 +4.08m+4.09m+4.10m+4.10.1m)

Make sure that you have your console log file set up in conf.ini

[Console]
HISTORY=1024
HISTORYCMD=1024
LOAD=console.cmd
SAVE=console.cmd
LOG=1
LOGTIME=0
LOGFILE=log.lst
LOGKEEP=0

then launch the un modded game using the regular ilfb.exe (it should be around 4Mb) not the mod activator one 156Kb and verify if the normal game loads

if yes then the problem is with you mod activator

so download again mod activator and install following instructions, then before installing any mod launch the modded game to verify that everything is working if yes proceed with mod installation and remember some golden rules
1) back-up before any major modification or install
2) install one mod at a time and test immediately after install if everything works

Hi,
thanks for the tips. Yeah, my unmodded game is working fine.
I will download the modact again, see if it works now.
But I didn't understand the thing with the logfile, I compared it with the one you wrote, but on mine it says LOG=0 instead of your LOG=1 Does that mean anything ?
Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: Frankiek on March 25, 2011, 06:41:06 AM
Log=O is the default setting, this means that the console log is not activated, just put Log=1 and the console log will start. In this way by opening your log.lst file (in the main il-2 folder) you will be able to verify eventual errors and crashes. You can also check your console log will in game by  using shift+tab

Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters

This is very strange If I understand well you have a fresh 4.10.1 installed that is working well then you install the mod activator 2.72 (fresh download) on top of your vanilla 4.10.1 and then when you launch the game it crash 20% this is very strange.
Are you sure that before reinstalling the Modactivator you have removed all the folders called Files, jsgmemods and MODS from previous installs?

Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: Frankiek on March 25, 2011, 04:15:00 PM
no it is not the same, when you overwrite the old ones you may be keeping some file that is clearly creating problems (just one is more than enough). So please delete (or move out of the way) the three folders and install the fresh ones from the mod activator recently downloaded, then launch the modactivated game and verify that everything works before installing any new mod

okay, i did what you said, started again and...60 % CTD. I did what is explained in the article about it, but the situation that is assumed there is that i have a working installation, and after a new plane installed it does 60 % CTD, but i don't have any mod installed.
Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: Frankiek on March 26, 2011, 06:14:28 PM
there isd a contraddiction between:

1)I don't have any mod installed

2) and after a new plane installed it does 60 % CTD (this looks a mod to me)

I would suggest for you to have a vanilla 4.10.1 working then you install just the mod activator (no new planes, nothing else) then launch the game as it is

if you have any doubt follow this

The thing is, I don't have any mod installed (mod folder empty except "Mapmods" and "STD".) Or is it possible that there are mods located anywhere else ? But when I start, it does CTD at 60 %  :(
What do you mean with have a vanilla 4.101 working ? Should I uninstall the game, reinstall until 4.101 again or just deleting the Modact files ?

You should also have a Files folder in the il-2 main directory and inside the File folder you will find a gui and cod folders and a file .rc. check also that your JGSME mods are all inactivated. Before starting launch JGSME and check that the right window is empty. Finally you will have to check that your buttons is the  latest version http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,97.0.html and that you have the correct air.ini file. To stay on the safe side  inactivate the air.ini putting a "-" in front and rename  "-original air.ini" to air.ini
then launch the game

LOL i did it that way too but what honestly I believe you had a conflict with too many buttons. A shitload of buttons comes out of the jsgme install of this mod. I only had a decent amount of luck when i put it directly into my mods folder. I can talk about this all day but thier needs to be one standard and one standard only. So if and when you started to crash, you probably deleted all the buttons files you could find (which the majority are in the jsgme is you installed that way) so the MODS folder portion could work. And bam!! there ya go. hehe

There was no need to delete the modactivator to verify if stock version works you just go to JGSME select the 00_Stock_4101m and bring it to the right side in this way  you are sure that you are using the unmodded ilfb.exe. What most probably has happened is that you have deleted the Files and MODS folders but kept the 156K il2fb.exe (modded) this exe is not able to launch an unmodded game it will stop loading at 95%. So no worries just use the big 4,442 Kb exe and you will have the vanilla up and running

Previously I had a 60% crash with HSFX 4.11 too, but updating buttons was all what was needed. If MODS is present it always lists the first plane in air.ini before this exception. Has anyone experienced similar problems with Wine?

Guys I really don't get it working  :(
I was so confused about all the different problems that I decided to completely reinstall my game. I did it now. After every patch being installed I checked it if it works. No problem, 4.101 works. Then I installed the modact (downloaded it again). But now it doesn't start up at all !
I don't know if it matters, but in my main folder i have to il2fb.exe, but both 156 Kb, no 4,442 Kb one how you said Frankiek.
Hmm...I don't think that it's a problem, but I have some campaigns and the IL2 Shturmovik Stab from M4T, is it possible that they are not compatible with modact ?
Please help me, i would like it so much to finally get it working !  :-\

First, make sure you have the right modact for 4.101 there. It is currently modact 2.72. (this one: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13832.0.html )

then, open your main IL2 game installation.

First we have to get your stock game back and working again.

So, open you main game folder.

I want you to completely DELETE the following things in there:

the whole "MODS" folder
the whole "FILES" folder
all the .exe files that are called " il2fb.exe", not other exe files should be deleted.
the whole "jsgmemods" folder

dont second guess me on any of this, just completely delete them all.
Also, delete any shortcuts to the IL2fb.exe you may have made to put on your desktop or so.

The, go to THIS topic, and download 7zip. http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,2123.0.html
install it (if you havent already). Use only 7zip to open 7z files, such as the one the modact comes in. Some will tell you that other unzippers will do the job just as well, but they dont hang around our tech help section so much.

Now, go to this topic:
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1117.0.html
And download the il2fb.exe that is downloadable there. Use 7zip to open it, and put the il2fb.exe in your main game folder. It is about 4.3 mb or so big. Now, click on it to launch your game. If you had a working 4.101 previously, and you followed my steps above, then your game should start up. If it doesnt, it is because you have deleted sometheing else.

But lets assume it starts up. If it does, shut it down again.

Firstly, take the ENTIRE IL2 installation folder, (I think it is called something like "IL2 1946 Sturmovik" or something,) and COPY AND PASTE the whole thing to somewhere else on your PC. This is so you have a backup. you dont need the CD to play the game anymore anyway, you can copy and paste as many installations as you like.

Then, take the downloaded modact 2.72, and use 7zip to unzip it to some folder where it is alone. If your download is corrupt, 7zip wont open it at all.
So, unzip the download. Inside, you will find exactly 11 items.

a folder called "DGen"
a folder called "FILES"
a folder called "jsgmemods"
a folder called "MODS"
an exe Called Il2fb.exe
an exe Called JSGME.exe
a dll file called wrapper.dll
an INI file called JSGME.ini
an SFS file called SASBasic27.sfs
an SFS file called SASSound01.sfs
a file called Readme SAS Modact 2.7.txt

if you have anything else, or anything less, then you either did not use 7zip, or is not PC savvy enough to own a pc anyway.

Now, select ALL 11 items. COPY and PASTE them into your IL2 sturmovik installation folder. (the one where the il2fb.exe is)

When your pc tells you that you will overwrite files, say yes, overwrite them. If you miss any part of the modact, you are stuffed. make sure you copy all 11 items in.

then after that is finished, click on your il2fb.exe to launch the game (this will now be the new one that came WITH the modact, about 150KB or so big), to launch the game. IF you did everything exaclty as I said, it will start. If you negleted any step, or tried to keep some old mods or files, or decided for yourself to leave out pieces of the modact, then it will not start.

Beware iof you have a nanny PC, that hides files. IF you copy and paste and your PC tells you there are hidden files that it is not copying, you better make them visible and copy them. Il2 has some odd files in, and it is possible that something could have gotten missed.

IF you struggle with that, the physically drag and drop the files into the game folder.

Follow the steps and let me know how it goes.

Okay. One by one.
I verified, it is Modact 2.72. All the things you said are deleted (FILES is pretty big). Shortcuts are deleted.
7zip downloaded and installed. The new il2fb.exe put into main folder.
Now starting...and it works. Puh.
Okay, now, modact unzipped, all 11 items there and copied and pasted in il2 main folder.
Now the big moment, will it work or not ? YEESS !! Finally, I got it !
Thank you so much CirX, I'm so happy to have it working now !

Glad you got it sorted  :)

Sorry about the process, but I thought it would probably be unproductive to go bug hunting in detail, so we just hit it with "the Sledgehammer".

I should perhaps put this process into a sticky, for those at the end of their tether.

Hi again.
I have another problem now  :(
I wanted to install the jet era now, but i can't add the air.ini, plane.ru and weapons.ru lines. I have searched about this problem, but found only one who had this problem, and that was because his game was a downloaded version, but mine is from cd.
Here is what it said :
Cannot create the C:/Program Files/Ubisoft/IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/MODS/STD/com/maddox/il2/objects/air.ini file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

Hello, guys

This is my first post as I spend most of my time lurking and reading, but for the first time EVER, after years of playing this game, I've hit a snag that I haven't been able to resolve myself. Frankly, it's baffling.

It seems similar to the above mentioned "crash at 20%" but there are differences, so I wanted to make sure this wasn't something else before going through the lengthy process described earlier.

Now, the details. I'm running a fairly recent installation of IL-2 using 4.101 and Mod Activator 2.7. I do have a few mods installed, but not very many. The game has worked flawlessly and I haven't had any issues with the mods I've installed.

Then I tried installing the West Front beta maps. The thing is, the maps were designed to be used with JSGME, so it was a simple matter of dropping the maps and airstrip texture folders into the jsgmemods folder and then activating them, which I did.

Ever since I did that, the game crashes somewhere between 15% and 20%. I say "between" because it seems variable. Sometimes it crashes at 15%, 16% and even 20% depending on which mods I have disabled. It never goes beyond 20%. The crash itself is strange since, normally, the game just closes. In this case, the loading screen turns white and the game stops responding. If it makes it to 20%, the loading screen doesn't change, but it'll hang on 20% until, again, the game goes unresponsive.

I disabled the map and the texture in JSGME but it still crashes. I deleted the files completely, but it still crashes. If I disable the entire MODS folder, the game runs fine, both stock and with the mod activator. Now, I was under the assumption that activating a mod via JSGME wouldn't overwrite files without warning since that would make it impossible to completely uninstall it, nor were there any warnings about an overwrite on the main page of the map. Yet somehow, installing the Western Front map has screwed up something in my MODS folder - yet I've gone through and disabled each MOD and it still crashes.

I know all the MODs work because they worked before I installed the map, so with the map gone, I would think the game would work again unless, somehow, a map mod screwed up an aircraft or ship mod by overwriting or deleting a file. Yet I can't figure out which aircraft mod.

Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: razor1uk on April 22, 2011, 07:36:08 AM
75% crash fix should be the same as a 60% fix, just happened more slowly - so counter got to 75 instead. Relax, calm down. have a smoke and/or a beer - tis Good Friday, - and reread tutorials/guide linked on 1st postings page.

If in doubt. re-paste backup STD folder to Mods, and seperatly paste the required details or air, weapon and plane/ship etc into their correct '.ini' file and save each one.

Oh check that your your IL2 Folder location is Not Set to (via properties) to Read Only.

I need some help here. I'm pretty certain I know what the problem is, I'm getting 5% CTD, but I can't get the fix.
When I dl the Direct2Drive patch, which I've tried 3 times, it refuses to open both by Winrar and 7Zip. Says that the file is not an archive via 7Zip, and that it is in an unknown format or corrupted with WinRar. This I'm quite certain is why I've been tearing my hair out for the past few days trying to get this to work.

Had 4.09m with UP2.01 working fine for the longest time with no D2D fix, but being stupid me I un-installed, re-installed fresh version and tried to get to UP3.0 and 4.10.1. 4 installs later I'm about ready to break my mouse.

And yes, my game is D2D, not a disk. Couldn't find a copy anywhere in my area, game stores refuse to carry more than 3 racks 2 feet long worth of new pc games. EB Games sucks...unless you like XBOX

I'm having 5% Crash errors and I've tried everything listed to no avail.
I'm running IL-2 1946 v4.101m with Ultrapack3.0_RC2 installed. The stock game function doesn't even work, however if in JSGME UP3.0 is deactivated, the game goes back to it's old self and works fine. I also checked my log and it says I'm missing the following files: fb_3do22.sfs, fb_maps17.sfs, up_sounds.sfs, up_sounds02.sfs, up_sounds03.sfs, and up_sounds04.sfs. I reinstalled then updated back up to 4.101m and reinstalled UP3.0, followed by RC2, and none of those files showed up even after that. Can someone please help me and most likely make me feel as dumb as a brick. I'm new to this so show no mercy  :P

I've become confused about the folder structure under Modact 3.06... Is it still the case that the game will read a MODS folder? Does this MODS folder now live in the IL2 root directory, or under #SAS?

Thanks chaps.

The "MODS" folder just changed it's name to "#SAS", so instead of having a "MODS" folder in the IL2 root directory, now you have an "#SAS" folder in the same place.

Best regards - Mike

I've installed 1946 version 4.10.1m.  Installed the Direct2Drive patch. INstalled Modact 3.06. Updated buttons.

Cannot get the IL2FB.exe to launch.  The il2fb_stock opens fine, but when I attempt to open the .exe, the IL2 Executable Selector does its countdown, disappears and the Windows double-bell sound occurs....then nothing.

There is no error message.

the 70% crash troubleshooter

a Much rarer crash, but more tricky to pin down.

70% cdt indicates a conflict between one of your ini files (static.ini, technic.ini or chiefs.ini ) and actual new objects in your mod files

To fix it you need to find out which line in any of those .ini's points to a worngly installed or missing object. Best thing is to revrt to backup and start over.

how can i do this?
i'm not very expert about theese things
if there is a tutorial about this argoment i will be very happy XD

20% at the start of the game means (often, very often) a problem is an incompatibility in the Java code.
Example in code 409:
if I did not delete realistic navigation in code, I have a 20% ctd
Code to review!

Any hints on that?

Hi my problem is as follows. I try to deal with him for over a year. I still do not know what is. I've had it. For some time I wrote on the Polish forum. Unknown to what it is. Maybe here's the good modders and people who know something more about the IL 2 UP3.0 or DBW 1.7. v4.10.1. So this is it ... It is a clean original version of IL 2 that I have to V4.08. Installs in turn as it should be patches v4.09, v4.10, v4.10.1. Finally it's time to UP3.0 RC then RC2, RC3, RC4 and RC4 Update. OK, everything is as it should be ok.
But wait ... When I run JSGME loads mods such as RPS 5.0, # UP # _Gurner FX, FX DBW_Gurner # 3 AI 1.71. and smaller mods. The bullet trails etc. But never mind that half the problem.
The problem is this ALWAYS ALWAYS stress after loading Modas in JSGME or install it manually. Whether in UP3.0 or DBW 1.7 RC4. In UP3.0 in a 5% load or 35% of the game either freezes or crashes to the desktop. More is 5% the game crashes, and 35% hold the game crashes to the desktop.
The DBW is similar. I installed it so that only a fly on these wonderful mods. However, the game crashes at these mods at 20% load. Please help. I do not know what to do. Other people can se play without problems on these mods. But each UP3.0 or DBW is the same. But for me, probably not: (I can not install any mods.

This is a very strange case of IL2. I am surprised why this is so. So can someone tell me or help. Thank you.

I'm getting 60% CTDs on DBW 1.71.  It was fine until I installed the Spanish weapons pack, J7W1, D510, and MiG-19 this morning, and now I can't get it to load even with the new planes disabled.  I copied my backed-up STD folder into #DBW just to make sure I hadn't accidentally broken something when I made the edits, and it still won't load.  I followed all the steps on the first page.  Vanilla 4.101 loads fine.

The issue described in the above post has been semi-solved.  Apparently having the Shinden's files in the game causes a crash, even if the Shinden's entries are completely removed from the air.ini, planes_ru, and weapons_ru.  I had to delete the plane completely to get the game to work.  So I can get the game to load, but the Shinden itself is still broken.

Hi all.
I have 60% crash and can't do nothing with it.
I've installed SAS_Modact_3.06 on IL2 ver. 4.101. No mods installed. Latest buttons and  selector installed. Tried different things (clear installation on fresh copy of Il2, renaming air.ini...etc) but still nothing. Stock version starts but when I push any menu button in game or "Win" key it crashes to desktop.

Very nicely done, thanks.

Just one little additional advice, set your conf.ini to log the loading of the game

[HotKey Console]
LOG=1
LOGTIME=1

Thanks for this old note Frankiek, I do have a 60% crash issue which prevents me from enjoying my first aircraft mod. I would like to try what you describe here, but I need to better understand what the third line should read once one has put the chosen name. Should it be LOGFILE=chosenname.lst or something like LOGFILE=log.lstchosenname ??
Thank you.

LOG=1
LOGTIME=1
LOGFILE=log.lst
LOGKEEP=1   <----          [1 keeps the file]  [ 0 does not keep the file.]
This is how I have mine if this helps.
I just delete the log file when it gets to large. Next time you start the game it creates a new log file.

I'm running UP3.0 and I'm trying to get the Zeppelin P class in it but instead il2 gives me a 70% CTD, is there a way to get it to work or is it only for DBW?

I found this sequence in my Conf file but couldn't find log.lst.  I created the file with a text editor and the data didn't flow into it.

Where is the log.lst file? and the other files you mentioned.  I couldn't find them under #dbw anywhere

lordish, it will be in your main IL2 game folder, not in #DBW folder.
the same place where your il2.exe sits.
it is all explained here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13457.0.html

although that same info is in the posts prior to yours.
i hope you've read them....

Nope, log.lst isn't under my game file.  It's nowhere.  I made up a filename of log.lst and and rebooted the game and when it crashed at 70% the log.lst file I created was empty so I deleted it.  There is a file named initlog.lst that updates every time I start the game, but I've found the information there incomprehensible.  I just downloaded the automatic log reader.  Maybe that's the ticket for now.

As for reading the appropriate posts, I have several times.   Here's the initlog.lst

shelby,
Are the up_planes SFS files showing in this log entry residing in your root directory?

Answer my other question. Did you install this mod "DarkerNight" or Dark Skies? It's definitely NOT part of my Install of DBW+UP.

The only other advice I can give then is to reinstall your game. I've never seen that error myself and I've installed ONLY DBW 1.71+UP3RC4 a "few" times.

I'm not looking at that shit until you modify your post and use the code tag (# button) and get rid of the superfluous log entries that have nothing to do with the error.

I have a 20% CTD with a new plane i am installing what did i do wrong I followed the steps to the letter
Title: Re: 5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters
Post by: SAS~Boomer on June 17, 2013, 06:02:19 AM
20% CTD is very difficult to troubleshoot
re-installing is usually the only option AFAIK

Planes may need an alternative Diff FM to install the plane
They may only work on certain Mod versions, example> 4.10 or 4.11
not all planes work in all versions of the Modded game

without knowing which Modded game version you are using, and which exact plane you are trying to install
it is impossible to troubleshoot anything at all

Always try to give as much info as you can when asking for help,as there are numerous versions of the game these days

I have a 20% CTD with a new plane i am installing what did i do wrong I followed the steps to the letter

post your modded game version, and a link to the aircraft in question
I may be able to help   :)

Ok,makes it a little easier
You need... to read more closely  :)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This has been developed using 4.10.1, Modact 3.06 and Jetwar 1.2. Please do not request support if you try and install it on any other setup.

You have to have JetWar 1.2  installed  ;)
there is now JetWar 13 so I imagine it would work also
I have these installed and working fine in my JetWar 13 >
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,34417.msg371637.html#msg371637
and you may need these installed for the sound anyway

4.   If you do not already have the L-39 installed, you may need the sound files. Download, unzip and put the L-39 sounds folder in your SAS/Mods folder:

So I imagine the  L159F would too,if installed on JetWar,with the L-39 installed for the sound files   :)

hope this helps
Cheers

if you already start your game clean, try enable logfile, then copy/paste the last 1/3 your logfile here, we'll see what's the problem you are having.

yesterday night after hours of trying it worked... but now after failed aircraft addition and 60% and later 70% crash
I reverted with Modact.... and again 5% crash

losing my temper soon and smash my PC

cant get over it... Using steam 4.12 version and using the "installer for dummies" of the mod act... and nothing works...

So I had a previously working modded IL-2 and lost it. Re-installed from 4.07m with Modact 5.20 and Modact flyable AI. Did everything I did the last time, First time the game crashed before it even loaded. Did a few tweaks got to secondary loading screen then went black and crashed. What am I not doing?

Intel Core 2 Duo E 7200 @ 2.53GHz
3 GB DDR2
1GB Nvidia Geforce 120GT
Running all my games from and external HDD. Installed all mods to IL-2 1946 stored on HDD

Hey guys, I'm a new member on this site and it's has been a while since I started downloading from here, but I have a little bit of trouble when modding my il2 game. :(
I downloaded the 4.12.2m patch, mod activator and AI flyable planes mod. I tried downloading a few new planes (F-4 phantom for example), I placed the files in my "#SAS" since that is my mods file, edited the "air.ini" file etc... but when I run the game it disappears or crashes at 20%, with every plane I add, and it works perfectly without them.
any idea how I can fix this issue, and thank you in advance.  :)

F-4 PhantomII is one of the most hard to install MOD, not recommended to learn how to installing new aircraft MODs to beginners.

3 other MOD components are required by F-4 and they are all written on its topic's 1st post.
You might forget to install them or failed to set the folder positions needed.

also.... do you reade these sticky topics?
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13457.0.html
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,39780.0.html

The error log has to be attached in the post when you ask others in this forum "not to work a new MOD" or "game crashes after installing a new MOD".

Very nicely done, thanks.

Just one little additional advice, set your conf.ini to log the loading of the game

[HotKey Console]
LOG=1
LOGTIME=1

Hello, i am need help Plz

Hello all.

As you can tell this is my first post so be gentle :)

I'm new to IL-2 modding but not to the practice in general. I think I know my way around launchers/JSGME/File Movement.

Having trouble with CUPs WAW module. 70% crash.

I bought IL-2 1946 on steam, which currently comes updated to 4.12.2M. I copied IL-2 out of the Steam folder first, then I installed Modcat and the Map Module. Then DAW, TGA and WAW, following instructions and using the Restore points.

I am now getting the 70% crash when I try and load up WAW. DAW works fine.

Do I need to reinstall my entire IL-2 '46? Or just CUP or WAW?

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. Will a logfile help?

Yes! Your 70% should be easy to fix...but a reinstall of only WAW and sticking to the install guide might be the better option.
With Up to date WAW you should not get a 70% crash any longer.
Just try to reinstall and if the error persits post a log...could also be a corrupted download

Thanks for the response Griffon.

I'll do a reinstall and let you know. My internet isn't that great so a corrupt DL is the probable cause.

Dear All-

I have been away from the Il2 mod scene for a while, and have re-joined it with a fresh IL2 1946 install of steam. I have followed the instructions for MME, and I can use the stock game, or JSGME to activate some mods, but I cannot get WOW working- CTD at 60%. My log file shows that :

PlMisAir: class 'air.Sea_Avenger' not found

Same issue as the chap "Comm Cody" in this thread- "60% crash with C.U.P"  .

I have tried 2 fresh installs , including extracting into a file then copying across.

Any thoughts on how to move forward?

Kind Regards

Andrew

Not needed i18n/weapons_ru.properties (to version 4.11.1m) or i18n/weapons.properties (from version 4.12m) by game system.
They are optional.

Step 2: Download the latest buttons file from our Activators and Utilities forum, and MAKE SURE you replace yours with it as per the instructions there.

Don't do this step if you are using the Modact 6.40 or if you'll change the button file with older button files  the game when launched from the selector will crash at the 60%. Use the button file present already in it and don't change it until new button files will be released!

1 - Depending on the version of the game or the installed pack, sometimes the "weapons.properties" file is used!

2 - the absence of this file does not cause any problem to the good progress of the game!

we need the log.lst to help you, not the initlog
and a 60% crash is a sure indicator that you messed up while adding aircraft; either the file path how you added the aircraft is wrong, or you forgot to add something to air.ini or there is classfiles missing;

I have tried every step listed here: checking for extra buttons, comparing / disabling most recent plane mods in the air.ini, adding the Diff_FM mod
I'm afraid I understand...
What is the version of your game?
I hope you don't have fun changing buttons as you fiddle around!
And for the Diff_FM it's the same... some packs already have the Diff_FM integrated!

Little reminder :

Read how to get the log here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13457.0.html), and the instant log here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19308.0.html).

When you want to post only the relevant parts from the log
read here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=39780.0) how to do this. (code option!)

If you want to post all lines of the logfile we suggest to use https://pastebin.com/
to paste your log and then paste the link here which you got from them.
Read and see here (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,39780.msg627220.html#msg627220) how to do this.

Note: It is preferable to provide the LOG in its entirety!

Log.lst -- not init -- found it, thnx.  Adding it here via pastebin:

https://pastebin.com/RL1BeRGf

I am running VP modpack with SAS ModAct 5.30/4.12.2.  Selector version is 4.02   It's been hard to retrace my steps... I think I got into trouble when I tried to add three really nice looking mods which are all listed as 4.1.2 compatible:

Ranwers' "Avro Lancaster Mk III v.3.2 - with collated updates and fixes"  which instructed me to install the "latest" buttons point me to a download link of 2 sets of offline and online buttons (confusing) dated 2/20/13.  Which is weird because my pre-install button (which I saved in a backup folder) is actually dated 11//22/2017.  There is also a 3rd button version (dated 10/30/13) which I extracted from a fresh install of the Modact 5.3 to a temp folder -- I tried all three button versions one at a time to no avail :(

Ranwers' "Halifax - Re-work" -- tested after install, no problems.

Sani's "B24J with more loadout options and with new fm" -- didn't get to test.

Full disclosure: I did install the Common Utilities mod for the "Me-264 with BMW engines v1.1" which I also downloaded but didn't get to install....cart before the horse here - yeah probably.  Wondering if maybe that caused some problems?  I have since un-installed CU and the dll file along with it.

Anyway -- thanks for your replies so far -- hope I can get this thing solved.

there is so much errors about ships in there I dont know where to start ... if you want to point the 60% to an aircraft though, here we go:

java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.maddox.il2.objects.air.Leo_451

as VPModpack is very old and oudated, I would switch to BAT for 4.12 modded game pleasures;
also, as you said you cannot retrace what you did - thats the worst thing you can do if you dont know how a modded game here really works! just throwing mods into a folder and hoping everything will run fine is a sure way to spend many hours in frustration;
if you are new to modding, add one mod at a time, read through the release threads, even if they are several pages long and for heavens sake BACK UP the ini files first!!!
there is a lot of documentation for newbies here how to back stuff up and how to configure the game, would be a good idea to read those first...

retracing is easy once you know what you are doing - otherwise, you end with a crashing game and dont know what to do...

I back up my entire STD folder every few days -- so pretty good about ini files and such.  Weird to see the Italian mod ship errors in the log.lst because I have NOT downloaded or installed any Italian ships!  Have never installed the LeO-451 either -- must have come with VP Modpack.

But I hear what you're saying about best practices: add one mod at a time, read through the release threads, etc. -- good be be reminded about all that.

I decided to go with VP Modpack because I'm mostly interested in WWII (not really into jets) and because of the smaller install -- but I will take your advice, start from scratch and install BAT 4.12 ...80 gigs [gulp].

Back to square one.  Thanks for you reply.

For WW2 you just need redcore...and trust me, its head and shoulders above anything that VPModpack can offer...and there is a lot of campaigns that need the added content in BAT...

It's a bit of a work to download and set it up in the first place, but once it's running, it's easy to maintain and you will like it I am sure!

But don't think I'm turning my back!
Rebel I am and Rebel I remain!  :P

Hello WWIIBuff65,

what's now? Problem solved or not?  ;)

WWII cinema without Lancasters and B-17's is possible, but not fun!  ;)

You seem to have added  F_86D40 to air.ini but there are no classfiles for this plane.

That means, you installed them wrong

Wrong install of that plane is the reason for your CTD. air.ini is looking for a class that does not exist (or is misplaced)
That is all.
