Title: Yoxford Boys - Historic P51 campaign for DBW and UP
Post by: Stratodog on January 31, 2012, 07:56:04 AM
The Yoxford Boys

For DBW1.6 and UP3.0RC4  This campaign should work with DBW1.7 I haven't tested it yet, so let me know either way.

Download it here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=1064

The 357th Fighter group.  One of the most successful Fighter Groups to operate P-51s. It's also noteworthy that they exclusively operated P-51s and never transitioned to or from another fighter type while serving in the 8th AF.

In this campaign you will fly 18 historic missions.  4 missions in the P-51C and the rest in the P-51D.  The dates, times, mission routes, opposition, and many other details are as close as I could get them based on a lot of research and within the constraints of the maps.  The main non-historic aspect of the missions is the length/duration and the number of planes.  Most of the missions take 1-2 hours to complete and are flown on the "Westfront44" map created by GilB57.  The other missions are flown on the "Channel Summer 43-45" map created by Canon.  The number of planes has been reduced from historic levels in order for your computer to be able to handle it.

You will be the leader of the 357th on each mission and so this campaign will really test your airmanship.  As the leader of each mission, you will be responsible for assembling the group after take off, navigation, finding the bombers to escort, finding ground targets if applicable and finding your way home.  You must select the highest rank (Colonel) for your pilot in order to make the missions work properly.

The missions are based primarily on the experiences of 4 prominent Aces of the 357th.  Richard Peterson, Leonard "Kit" Carson, John England and Clarence "Bud" Anderson.

This campaign should really give you an authentic feel for 8th AF escort missions without having to fly for 5 to 6 hours.  There are also plenty of ground targets for strafing on most missions so good luck and good shooting.

Good to know.  Let me know if the rest of the missions run and I'll add HSFX 5.01 to the compatibility list if it works out.

On HSFX 5.01 the first 3 missions work ok but at the 4th cannot open the arming window to change the skin and the planes explode on tarmac falling from the sky. If I bypass that mission on the 5th the map is not there and "Landscape Can_english channel/Gsummer 43" loading error. So with HSFX 5.01 only the first 3 missions work.
Just to let you know.

Thanks TICI, Try mission 009Yoxford_07_25_44, I'd like to see if it works.  The mission you mentioned has some objects from the command and control mod by checkyersix.

MUST READ INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Yes, I probably should have mentioned to write down some of the briefing notes, like heading to landfall, heading to R/V, cruise altitude and cruise speed.  One would get a bit lost without the info. :)

Milantarik, I'm impressed that you can post here while flying the mission! Talk about multi tasking!

Glad you like it so far.

BTW, I've made a slight revision to missions 15 and 16.  After I test run the missions with DBW 1.7, I'll post a version 1.1 with the revised missions.  If anyone needs the revised missions 15 and 16 before Tomorrow or the next day, let me know and I'll get them to you.

Lol yeah actually I went here while I flew to see if there was actually something useful in the donkey dingus post^^ because I struggled a little bit to set the right cruise settings...And I thought I'd just give a short thanks ;)

Now I'm on my way back home, Anvers on my left wing...and in my mind I'm already painting another kill mark on my fuselage...  8)

 :)

For me, the best way to find the proper cruise power setting is to level off at the cruise alt., and continue with climb power (95%) until I've sped up to the cruise speed.  Then start coming back on the power until it will stabilize at the desired speed.  You will end up going a bit too fast at first, but that's much better than going too slow.

Same here. Normally I leave my manifold pressure very high (55-57) and adjust prop pitch for desired RPM. The instructions in the first mission brief were great. I was really glad/amazed how the bomber stream appeared directly in front of me!

Updated to version 1.1

Revised missions 15 and 16 for playability, and mission 18 for scenery.

Also tested and compatible with DBW 1.7
