Title: USN - Colorado Class Battleships [4.09] [4.10] [4.12]
Post by: Gofo on January 04, 2012, 08:32:52 AM
Good day all,
I’m glad to present you the first of my ships, the first of a long list (so I'm ardently hoping, taking into account that I’m not a youngster :D).

The Colorado-class battleships have been the first USN vessels to be fitted with 16” (406-mm) guns. These ships were practically identical to those of the Tennessee-class, except for the main battery.
The class was made of three ships, USS Colorado BB 45, USS Maryland BB 46 and USS West Virginia BB 48: initially, it was due to come into service a fourth ship (USS Washington BB 47), but she was destroyed as a target (being only 75% complete) under the terms of the Naval Washington Treaty. The five vessels of Tennessee and Colorado-classes were known as the “Big Five”, they constituted the backbone of the Pacific Battle Fleet for a long while.
No one of these ships was modernised before the onset of WWII, apart increased AA-protection (and armament) in mid-late 1941.
The USS Colorado was the only of the “Big Five” not moored along the battleship row on December 7, 1941. From July of that year she was undertaking routine-overhaul at Bremerton (Puget Sound) Navy Yard, works lasted until March 31, 1942.
Colorado and Maryland had the cage mainmast cut down in early 1942 and entirely replaced by a small control tower in 1943. Whereas, the forward cagemast was retained.
On the contrary, the West Virginia was so heavily damaged during the attack, that, once recovered, the Navy decided to completely rebuilt her in the same fashion as was done for the Tennessee-class ships.

During the hostilities, Colorado participated to several pre-invasion bombardment providing effective fire support during the following campaigns:
Gilbert Islands (Tarawa)
Kwajalein
Saipan
Palau
Guam
Leyte
Lingayen
Okinawa

She was placed out of commission in reserve there on January 7, 1947, and sold for scrapping on July 23, 1959.
The Colorado received seven battle stars for World War II service.

Installation procedure is quite simple and fully detailed in the Readme file within the Colorado’s folder.

N.B. This Mod was initially created for the 4.10 version, but it works even in 4.09.

Many thanks, Gofo, for this beauty! I already have your beta version fully working. Do I just replace the mod, or do I also have to add extre lines? 8)

Bravo Zulu!
I guess that means the end of the overly popular HMS Prince of Wales :D

hi cgagan,
thanks for your appreciation. Delete the old version, add the new folders and follow the instructions. *.ini and *.properties files have to be updated, they are rather different

Replacing the generic BB with it is not such a good idea in regards to backwards compatibility.
It would be better to still have the generic BB, but now as a Colorado class! :)

Gofo:

I'd like just a tad more info pertaining to this vessel:

As it is modelled right this moment, what years did she serve? What differences, if any, were there in 1944?

The reason I ask is because I'm very interested in the Measure 32 camouflage schemes of that year.

I've looked the skin over and it looks like it may a dream to paint.

Great work!

Bob

In this condition: From May 1942 to 1944 or so.
Colorado missed Pearl Harbor (she was in refit at San Francisco at the time) so her appearance was never altered as drastically as those warships that were in Pearl Harbor on Dec 7.
Her afterwards lattice mast was removed late in the war and replaced by a simple pole mast, and AA increased (and a different paint job I guess) but otherwise she remained pretty unchanged.
Same goes for Maryland which was at Pearl but only suffered two hits and got away with relatively slight damage.
Both retained much of their pre war appearance, including the lattice foretop until 1945.
West Virginia was the most heavily damaged battleship restored from Pearl Harbor and was totally different after her extensive refit so for all intents and purposes she was a different class than her two sisters.

Replacing the generic BB with it is not such a good idea in regards to backwards compatibility.
It would be better to still have the generic BB, but now as a Colorado class! :)

That's a fair comment.
To retain USSColorado as USSBBGeneric proceed as follows.

Do not delete the entries for the Generic BB when installing the Colorado.
They can be disabled temporarily by add //
example:

//[Ships.USSBBGeneric]
// com.maddox.il2.objects.ships.Ship$USSBBGeneric

Install Colorado as per Gofo instructions and check it works.

Create a copy of the USSColoradoBB45_41 folder in ShipGofo/3do/Ships
Rename to USSBBGeneric folder

In the USSBBGeneric folder find skin1o.tga and create a Copy in the same folder.
Rename the copy skin1o.tgb   --- If you do not do this the model will pick up the KGV skin :)

Paste new entries into ships.ini as follows:

So, from what you say, I could paint USS Colorado BB-45 in her MS-32 Design-3D (Modified) and we'd be good to go. Also, from what you say, I could paint USS Maryland BB-46 in her MS31-32 Undesignated Design using this same ship. Would this be a fair statement?

Asheshouse:

From what you say I could paint USS Maryland BB-46 then place her in the Generic BB slot of the game. Is this a fair statement?

From limited research (I'm just starting) these ships seem to have been painted in very early versions of MS 31 or 32 starting as early as late 1942 or early 1943. USS Maryland wore her paint from this period right through to late 1944 at least. (information here: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-co-mk/camouflg/usn-wwii/3--bb2.htm (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-co-mk/camouflg/usn-wwii/3--bb2.htm)

I'm beginning to get pumped about doing this.

hi all,
forgive me for being so pedant, but precision and reliability of data  have been compulsory partners of my professional life (they keep affecting my behaviour albeit I'm retired since 2007 :D)
Answering Plowshare's questions and doubts:

Finally, both reverted to a MS 21 measure during the last stages of the war.

Of course, you can put any skin on the model I proposed, but it would be not historically correct. If you care of details and correctness, be patient, I planned the building of all "version" of the Colorado-class, they are already on the drawing board ;)

Gianni:

Thank you for the update. This is the information I wanted. Like you I prefer things as accurate as possible and if you're doing these ships for the later stages of the war then I'll be patient and wait.

I've installed your ship as both the USS Colorado BB-45 and then replaced the USSBBGeneric with your ship as well. I'll go in and add some weathering to make the two vessels distinguishable from each other.

Where did you get the drawing of Colorado's MS 32 scheme? I haven't found anything yet.

Again, thank you for the work.

Finally & what a beauty she is too! can't wait until some bright mission maker is able to trade all the British battleship stand-ins on various Pearl Harbor missions with this one!
Just as an aside: is such a process difficult? :-\

Not at all, actually you can do it yourself with notepad.
If you follow Gofos instructions on how to replace the generic BB, this will even be automatic in all your missions without you or anyone else doing anything.
Since the KGV is much longer than the Colorado, there's no risk of them colliding, as you replace a larger ship with a smaller one.

Hi mate!

Great ship!

Anyway you can change the icon to from 410 only to 409/410 compatible because I have just installed this masterpiece and her sister Tennessee on my 409 installation and both are sailing and fighting correctly!

The only difference in ship between 409 and 410 is only for carriers because the 410 one have the beacon that make them CTYD on 409 installation , but removing it make the mod 409 compatible!

Your haven't becaon so them are compatible from the start!

All the best!

Is there any advantage in staying 4.09?

Have all mods we have collected and harmonizer over a lot of time working flawless among them and add at the orchestra I build the new compatible one developed in the meantime for example!

Anyway I believe that 4101 isn't a so mature installation as 409 was!

You can't install so many planes at the same time and many mods are still incompatible , there is a new 411 version behind the corner that can potentially give again great rouble and what we have new is still more or less WIP!

HSFX6 already has earlier versions of Tennessee and Colorado included.
If installing these new versions then look for the existing text entries in ships.ini

Disable the lines for extra guns which appear after the line //Hsfx Multi Turret

Otherwise you will see the ships in FMB but they will be frozen when you run the mission.
The alternative if you are to keep the Mullti-Gun Turret function is to add Shellstart Hooks to the relevant Gun*.msh files, instead of disabling the lines in ships.ini

Make these changes to the msh files

Gun1.msh
Code: [Select]
[Hooks]
ShellStart1 <BASE>
ShellStart40 <BASE>

[HookLoc]
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 -1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel

Gun2.msh
Code: [Select]
[Hooks]
ShellStart2 <BASE>
ShellStart41 <BASE>

[HookLoc]
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 -1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel

Gun3.msh
Code: [Select]
[Hooks]
ShellStart3 <BASE>
ShellStart42 <BASE>

[HookLoc]
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 -1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel

Gun4.msh
Code: [Select]
[Hooks]
ShellStart4 <BASE>
ShellStart43 <BASE>

[HookLoc]
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel
1 0 0   0 0 1   0 -1 0   14.03  0 -1.2  //rot X -90    x dim is length of barrel

Making changes like these to the main guns balances the relative power of ships with multiple gun turrets compared with say single gun turrets.

Changes to the Tennessee are similar except the turrets have three guns rather than two.

===================================================================================================

I just looked at the drawings and some photographs of the below ships:

Wyoming Class had 12 x 12" guns [six twin gun turrets] Wyoming BB32 [primary guns removed and was training ship during ww2] & Arkansas BB33
New York Class had 10 x 14" guns [five twin gun turrets]  New York BB34 & Texas BB35

Nevada Class  had 10 x 14" guns [two triple gun turrets (lower) two twin gun turrets (higher)]  Nevada BB36 & Oklahoma BB37     Only class that had gun turrets for the main battery with two different configurations.
Pennsylvania Class had 12 x 14" guns [four triple gun turrets]  Pennsylvania BB38  & Arizona BB39
Tennessee Class had 12 x 14" guns [four triple gun turrets]  Tennessee BB43  & California BB44
Colorado Class had 8 x 16" guns [four twin gun turrets]  Colorado BB45 & and Maryland BB46 & West Virginia BB47

North Carolina Class had 9 x 16" guns [three triple gun turrets]  North Carolina BB55 & Washington BB56
South Dakota Class had 9 x 16" guns [three triple gun turrets] South Dakota BB57 [only had 16  5"/38 secondary twin mount gun turrets to allow for additional flag officer space] & USS Indiana BB58 [20 5"/38 secondary] & USS Massachusetts BB59 [20 5"/38secondary] & USS Alabama BB60 [20 5"/38 secondary]
Iowa Class had 9 x 16" guns [ three triple gun turrets] USS Iowa BB61 & USS New Jersey BB62 & USS Missouri BB63 & USS Wisconsin BB64

Now Gofo's ships on the other hand use a different mat name, SailorUSo.mat
That will not work for 3dgunners=0
To fix  rename to Sailor1o.mat
and in every Head*.msh file search for SailorUSo and change to Sailor1o
This will appear multiple times in each Head* file.

USS Colorado works good in 4.12.2/SAS ModAct 5.30.
Also there is no need to replace default US Genetic Battleship with this one as it is requested in instructions.
Both ships work together without problems.

USS Colorado fights against IJN BB Nagato.

Well there kind of is a reason to replace the US Generic Battleship.

Even though they both work in the game, take a good look at the generic US battleship.  The game used the King George V for the generic US battleship.  No US battleship ever had the main battery configuration found on the generic US battleship.   The game has been around long enough for this to be corrected in the stock game, but hasn't.

Dear Mailman,

With all respects I suppose it is up to anybody's private decision either to replace defauld US generic battleship or not. I prefer to have both of them.
Title: Re: USN - Colorado Class Battleships
Post by: -)-MAILMAN- on January 11, 2014, 09:21:33 AM
I meant nothing by it, but was simply pointing out that the ship model referred to in the game as a generic US battleship is not really a model of any US battleship ever built, but rather it is a model of the King Georg V, a Royal Navy battleship that is also in the game for GB.  I just thought after all of this time from the release of Pacific Fighters thru 4.12.2m that Oleg & now TD might have changed this.  I am just glad some mod makers have come out with an early US battleship and a late US battleship we can use that look correct.

I question this just like I questioned the use of a Lexington Class Carrier (umarked USS Saratoga) as a generic US carrier when only two were ever built, CV-2 USS Lexington (Winter '42 configuration) and CV-3 USS Saratoga (after spring '42 overhaul at Puget Sound) and both were already in the game.  I would have thought an Essex Class would have been more appropriate as the generic US carrier because it was the most numerous during the Pacific War.

Anyhow, not trying to start an argument.  We each have our own opinions.

the user decides to install this or to leave it.  ;)
Title: Re: USN - Colorado Class Battleships
Post by: Griffon_301 on January 11, 2014, 09:53:57 AM
I am with mailman on this;
there are quite a few users who moan about sublte 3d defects in certain aircraft types, yet Battleship row full of KGV BBs (only 4 of those were ever built) does not bother many guys;
if we strive for added realism, the choice of a KGV BB as default US BB is one of the gravest realism errors that can happen in any WW2 PTO flight sim that can happen;
KGVs were only present at the beginning of the war (when the Prince of Wales was sunk) and at the last stages, when the British Pacific Fleet finally came into being;
so replacing the default US BB with something much more realistic should be a prime topic for any PTO afficionado;
I am sure using Hurricanes as replacement Wildcats would stir quite a few US guys as well, as wood using Spitfires as stand in Yaks and so on...

but Gerax is of course right as well, its up to the final user to either install a mod or not - the need though is certainly there and it is fully justified historically speaking ;)

regarding carriers, I guess the best choice for a default US CV would surely be USS Enterprise, as she could be used through the full timeframe of the pacific war...

I don't see any purpose for the "generic" ships anymore.
I regard them as just spare slots.
Mission/Campaign builders should use the named ships.
Old missions/campaigns can easily be edited to use named ships.

New to installing mods

Followed instructions at the beginning of thread, installing to the #UP folder and copy/pasting over the USSBBGeneric lines in various files

USSBBGeneric ship still shows in FMB???

Any ideas of what I might have done wrong, seems as if I had done a half assed job of it, nothing would have showed up?

Is there something outside of the #UP folder that needs to be taken care of?

Thank you for your time

You probably have an error in the ships.ini file.

You need to delete the old USSBBGeneric entries and copy in the new ones given above.

Ensure that you keep a backup.

did a search, Ctrl-F, of the files requiring the replacement of the USSBBGeneric lines and have found no trace of the USSBBGeneric

the Colorado lines all seem to be in place

one last ? before I quit bugging you, is the path below the proper path for the GoFo folder?

C:\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#UP\ShipGofo

had the UP folder as #UP# but the extra # seemed to have been crashing the game

thanks again

If you want to replace the USSBBGeneric with USS Colorado then you should still have some traces of USSBBGeneric in your ships.ini.
Read this post again   http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,20755.msg432302.html#msg432302

The folder reference    C:\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#UP\ShipGofo   looks ok.
The folder name ShipGofo can be renamed to anything you like.
Within that folder you should have 3do\Ships\USSColoradoBB45_41

The folder reference    C:\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#UP\ShipGofo   looks ok.    ----- #UP# is wrong.

No, No.
About Ultr@pack3.0RC4 , #UP# is right.

Inksetter's #UP# makes IL-2 craching is.... only writing the ini entries of chief.ini / stationary.ini  ships.ini are mistaken or folder position (with classfiles) are mistaken.
It's standard behavier of mistaking of installing ship MODs.
Not to remane #UP# folder into others, that nothing solve.

I followed the readme and it made battleship row in the Hawaii maps vanish(which I should have expected seeing as they were scripted to put the Generic battleship there). That being said does any one have a copy of the Generic battleship,s data so I can reset and try it the correct way?
