Title: Ro37bis Ready to DL [4.10]
Post by: Dreamk on December 20, 2011, 09:50:12 AM
Tonight, the Romeo Ro37bis is once again speading its wings in the skies of Spain - the  "Cadenas" ground attack squadrons are pouring their full range of antipersonal and incendiary light bombs - so typical of Italian ordnance of the time.

you can download the beast at :

Name of skins folder:
Ro37bis

3dModel and Java Files: Dreamk
The default skin is mine (and I'm really not a good skinner) - but Nashprod is kindly working on the template and skins so expect soon an update for this matter.

As always cockpit specialists and FM gurus are wellcome to try their hand at improving this plane - no need to ask permisison for that.
I hope to have now eliminated all the bugs but the problem of "solitary modding"  is that one does't always pay attention to minor bugs - Only yesterday Nashprod

put the finger of 2 minors mistakes - it took me only a couple of minutes to correct them but without his help I would have been unware of them, though (afterthought) they were rather obvious.

Ro37bis take off instructions:

This is a biplane with a relatively low power radial engine so the take off is not always easy, above all when taking-off from grass landing strips.
Therefore practice first take-off from concrete runways, then pass to grass landing strips, and look at how the AI piloted plane do.

The critical point for torque is at 80km/h. If not managed correctly, the plane will then dip its right wing tip, under the influence of the torque and you'll crash.

2 procedures at possible:

The first procedure is to raise your throttle to 100% while holding your brakes - then let your plane go while pushing forward your stick so as to raise its tail as soon as possible and have the plane running parallel to the landing strip - it will very soon begin to take off by itself, then pull sharply your stick to climb

The second procedure is to raise progressively your throttle till 60-70%. Let your plane run and take speed, pushing slightly on the control stick in order to raise the tail (This is the critical phase) and have your plane run in an almost horizontal position - this allows the aircraft to take more speed (as you raise then your throttle till 100%)  and take off "almost by itself" at around 110 km/h .

When in air, trim your elevators (this is a "nose up" plane as usual with most biplanes) and it flies quite nicely.

Look at the AI flying, to learn about its abilities as a bomber, reconnaissance and fighter (never forget that you have two forward firing MGs - as a matter of fact a few aircraft were even modified in Spain into a monoplace fighter version)

This mod is 4.10 compatible (and uses DiffFm) - checked on SAS ModAct and UP3.0

Please note that this is a late series Ro37bis, as served in Spain - the early series that served in Abyssinia had a slightly different canopy and rear gun position fuselage opening, similar at the ones on the Ro37.

Another wonderful SCW aircraft ... this is becoming an embarrassment of riches. When I first bought Il-2 some 5 years ago, we were still skinning the U2VS and the Gladiator into all kinds of skin hacks, just to pretend having something that ever so vaguely resembled aircraft from this period. And that really required a significant suspension of disbelief ... now look what at we have gotten in the last few days.

Many thanks for these planes.

I've noticed that the Ro37 is a bit more lively than the He46, by which i mean that the few times I've tried the plane out so far it really acts aggressively, hunting out your tail.l The He46 variants act more like bombers, flying on their way without going after other planes.

The Ro37 will also be a wonderful plane to skin, nice and colorful.

The fm is, well, interesting...

I've never managed to ground loop a bi-plane on take-off before xD

Once in the air it flies quite nicely though :)

I've been flying with it tonight and it is an excellent ai plane as opponent. It shows lots of aggressiveness when not carrying bombs. It is however easy to destroy, compared to other biplanes and planes from that era. With a G50, not the heaviest armed of planes by any means, I could even break up Ro37's and have them completely disintegrate in air ...

I don't know how such things are modded, but did these planes really come apart so easily? Maybe they should be made a bit harder to shoot down, to add some extra challenge? Just a suggestion to what is already an excellent plane ... there is really a nice variation in the skies over Spain now ...

Great plane again, thanks a lot!

The ground loops and take-off difficulties seem to be caused by incorrect aerodynamic center position that causes wings to move funnily up and down when you change pitch in flight. The center of the 3d model is about 2 m too back and thus a lot of weight is on the tail wheel.

You can test my fix for that by opening the hier.him in Ro37Bis\3do\Plane\Ro37bis and changing the Attaching line for CF_D0 from
Attaching 0 1 0 -1 0 0 0 0 1 0 -0.1 0
to
Attaching 0 1 0 -1 0 0 0 0 1 -2 -0.1 0
This moves the plane 2 m backwards to fix the aerodynamic center position. Then the cockpit is not in correct place anymore, so you'll have to also open the hier.him in Ro37Bis\3do\Cockpit\Ro37bis and change the Attaching line for body from
Attaching 0 1 0.011378 -1.000000 0 0 0 -0.011378 1 1.03 -0.125 -0.20
to
Attaching 0 1 0.011378 -1.000000 0 0 0 -0.011378 1 -0.97 -0.125 -0.20
This moves the cockpit back to original position with respect to the plane. Then you can also remove an unwanted part in your windscreen by commenting or deleting lines
[Z_ReViTinter]
Mesh Z_ReViTinter
Parent _ROOT_
Attaching -0.00251516 -0.999994 0.0024547 -0.999938 0.00255145 0.0108588 -0.01087 -0.00243 -0.999938 0.29387 0.06147 0.72112

Title: Re: Ro37bis Ready to DL
Post by: Dreamk on December 21, 2011, 12:40:07 AM
The Ro 37 was indeed a typical pre-war Italian biplane - very nimble and acrobatic although underpowered....and highly vulnerable, as were the Fiat Cr32.
On the other hand the Italian monoplanes were known for their surdy metallic structure - and heavy weight with badly suited engines - engines engineering was the weakest point of the Italian aeronautical industry at the time. This made planes like the Cant Z501 or the SM79, for instance, nearly impossible to shoot down by 7.7mm gundfire, and even quite imprevious to 12.7mm, as the SCW war records show. Another weak point of Italian aircraft was the weak gear arrangement - take off and landing were highly critical phases - any tentative to strenghthen the design resulted in.... considerable drag.
A las point - quite consequent in Il2 modelling: centre of gravity issues - a plague of some Italian aircraft of the period - due to the fact that fuel tanks were located at various locations in the fuselage and furthermore that there were "evolutions in design" of teh planes that were not always in full accordance with the initial design: one cannot transform for instance a reco biplace bomber into a monopost fighter without moving the COG forward...therefore it was not uncommon to read in operational manuals of the planes instructions like " if less than 115l of fuel remain in your centre fuel tank you are forbidden to use flaps when landing" and such...

A few improvements
First, another batch of wonderful skins by Nashprod are available for download at:

http://narod.ru/disk/35045465001/Ro37bis.7z.html

Nashprod is really a great skinner and works very fast!

Then I thought that the engine can really be better looking and quite colorful as they really were ( there are now a number of original Ro37bis Piaggio engine on display in various museum in - ex Spain or Afganistan) so you can download the modifications with their installation instructions at:

http://www.mediafire.com/?kursrjhhisxxju6
or
http://ifolder.ru/27722680

Note that this archive includes also a hier.him file including Birdman's fix.

Enjoy

Great looking aircraft and addition to the game!  Unfortunately when I try flying it in QMB I get a "data file corrupt" window pop-up for it or any other aircraft regardless of the map I use.  Removed it from the game all works fine again.   Tried a couple of times to reinstalled but got the same results.  Any ideas why?
Title: Re: Ro37bis Ready to DL
Post by: FANATIC MODDER on December 21, 2011, 08:08:02 AM
I admit I waited for this a lot. I was curious to experience how it flies and the results were positive. I did 4 vs 4 dogfight vs I-15s and I can tell that Ro37bis were a tough plane to dogfight with. It could follow the I-15s in most maneuvres and only once I had a sudden spin trying to follow a I-15 to a very tight, slow climbing right turn. Then I took the I-15 and it felt slow and unresponsive by comparison! I should try again with I-15bis and I-16-10.
This addition looks, sounds and flies in a way I can think is nothing less than perfect. The 3D model looks exactly the plane looks in the photos, the plane flies in a way that seems 100% compatible with what is written in the history books. The only thing that bothered me is the cockpit position, that seems to be in a more frontal position that it should have been in reality (check from the in cockpit view the lower wings and then press F2 and you 'll understand.)

Now, I hope that more skins will be available and more loadout options. I 've read about the 180kg of bombs and it's use a single-seat fighter in the SCW with no gunner. And according to the old David Mondey book, 275 planes were still in use by the R.A. when Italy entered the war. So, there's much more than just SCW scenarios with this plane.

If you want to get back the original cockpit position, then just do the cockpit hier.him editing part of my fix I posted earlier. The Dreamk's improved engine files include my fix for plane hier.him, but not the part for cockpit leaving the cockpit 2 m more forwards than originally.

Wow, this is just amazing: three new planes for SCW in a row. Thanks a lot, DreamK. With these reinforcment, Franco's air forces are going to be hard to defeat  :P. This is even more essential than pava. Used in most battles. I was planning to make some skins for Letov S-328 to play as Ro-37, now I'm really glad to haven't started that...this is much better.
It's true this plane was easier to shoot down than others, probably because it was slow too. No republican pilot was able to shoot down a SM-79 along the whole war, but this one was a frequent prey, also because it was used so often for "cadena" ground attacks.
Thanks again.

DreamK thank you for the Linx, another great plane for the Spanish Civil War and Italys early Africa campaigns of WW2.Some were also sold to Hungary, so this bird will also fit into early Barbarossa missions. The plane matches up nice with Republican I-15s and the bombs are working nice for ground pounding.I believe these are dual 7.7mm MGs which can bring most birds down if you stay on their tail. This is entirely probable with this machine as it is nicely maneuverable.Despite "no access" to the rear gunner, the plane is alot of fun. And thanks agracier also for the skins.

Strange thing with arms! Planes under control of the computer (I so have understood their class, it is registered as the fighter) at shooting as rear marksman in a tower and course machine guns, can't get to one air target! Even in a thrust block! At level of skill the expert.

The rear gunner stations are only AI operated presently - at some time or other, I or someone else will do a cockpit for them - but for the present time all (well, let say most, as two coming mods will have them) these SCW planes will be issued without gunner cockpit

I've added to the air.ini, and the plane's folder is in #DBW, just like all the other Dreamk planes I've added (thanks for them!) and have working.  I deleted a few other added planes in case it was  java thing, but still ctd.  Huh????

Hi all I need some help, how can I run this model with the HSFX? I tried to install it but the game fails to 5%, if you uninstall normalmento everything works as before!

Maybe this might help

http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,22.0.html

5% crash on loading indicates

~You just upgraded Il2. During this you missed an SFS file Somewhere. Go back and repeat.

~You just installed a mod enabler. Then , also you might have missed an SFS file (could happen with some enablers) or, your copy of IL2 is a direct to drive copy bought over the internet. That means One of your SFS files and some of your dlls are spiked by UBI. The fix for this is here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1531.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1531.0.html)

~Somehow your soundsetting is something other than 44.1KHz, and this is somehow screwing everything else. I personally have never been able to reproduce this crash. But know about it anyway, Access your sound settings through the IL2Setup.exe , or IL2SET.exe in your game folder. This seems to apply only to old UI installations anyway. One of those "funny little spies" :D

~You did nothing and now there is a 5% crash. One of your SFS files somehow got lost or corrupted. Count them and replace them if needed. Copy all SFS files over from a backup of your game

...you did make a backup right....

Thanks for Boomer, but I could not get it to work with HSFX, I verified that all files are in place, but with the installation of HSFX Ro37 on the package does not work for me. Oh well maybe in the future I'll wait patiently a new HSFX updates will be implemented where these new aircraft. Thanks again Bo ;)

Hi friends I am having trouble installing the Ro 37 because it features two Air.Ini: Ro37bis air.Ro37bis NOINFO i01 SUMMER, displayed on page http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=20396.0 but inside the readme file Ro37Bis displays the following: He45 air.He45 NOINFO i01 SUMMER, I'm confused and MOD does not work.. Grateful to all.

Obviously a mistake and Read Me not updated. The Mod was built around the other. You shouldn't notice that.
I had the same prob as you, then lurked inside the classfiles to see Heinkel entry is outdated.

the inis from the first Post (Header) are relevant and working, update the Read Me and make backups.

Hi Skyrover - I tried these again and can confirm they do indeed work in TFM 4.12.2m, I must have missed the Italian Arms out first time round!

Thanks to you, dear Stanislao, ;) I also unfortunately is not a lot that I connect in a long time.
I took the opportunity to do it now that I reinstalled Il2Sturmovik, and I'm testing the Italian models that work with the "SAS Modact 6.3 for IL-2 4.13.3m" and I must say that this model is ok!  ;D Thanks again to all.

Hi,

Tubesight aim-view Java fix for 4.12: http://www.mediafire.com/file/4volnbskmqx43o1/Ro37Bis_Tubesight-Java-Fix_412.zip/file

The view is off-center though. Can anyone center it via 3D editing?

Thank you Birdman your fixes made good this plane for me! Well, i know i'm a little untimely but since i live on a planet in the proxima centauri system it takes a lot of time for me to get in touch! As i said, the plane now works correctly but i have my gunsight...off sight! The stream of bullets runs quite above the crosshairs. Which entries in the cockpit's hier.him should i fiddle about with? Just put me in the right direction and i'll figure it out by myself!
Thank you in advance and see you about 2028!

Best regards, Riccardo
