Hi guys :) This is my first post on your forum, so please please do not shoot  :)
I try start new topic here https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,76.0.html but It seems i do not have permission to do that.
Firstly sorry for my English is not perfect,i hope that someone will understands what i want to say :)

Ok. so I know many people have noticed the clouds in the UP3, did not look too good ,when you run  game in high resolutions, do not blame anyone, don't get me wrong.
Basic issue is the clouds are too small, proportions  between planes, ground and clouds are lost a little bit When I run my game in 1920X1080 resolution, some clouds are the size of the spitfire which does not look too good. So instead of complaining i start work on this ,but there are some problems, and I'm not sure where they come from :)

From thousand clouds mods ,which can be found on the Internet, I re-create clouds mod, which  looks a bit better but still are problems with it, so can you test that for me ?

In this mod there is a new sky texture, sunflare effect and clouds, just unpack this mod, to your #UP# folder ....

Now when you run game in 1280X1024, or any NON-Widescreen resolution, it looks pretty cool, but when you switch to high widescreen resolution in some areas you may see triangles or any other problems ,or maybe it's only problem with my card ??

Thank you for your efforts.

works great for me, thanks....1600x1200 non-widescreen, better fps than what i was using previously.

I wonder, that screen doesn't look like anything I've seen except this Bloom stuff. Atm. I'm using no Cloudmod,
as most of them give me shadowed squares on Landscape, not the squares at the high clouds.
Unpacked and installed, I had the same colour as before, maybe you use some sort of Gapa or other non-IL-2
related tinkering? In highclouds I do get squares, but only in some weird angles of view, clouds are indeed bigger,
now comes the but, your Mod looks good until hazy weather, as soon as I switch to Blind, it's too dark, but very plain shadowing.
I use Clouds=3, no other FX so far.

Clouds = 3? you mean TypeClouds=3?   ???
i'm pretty sure there's no such setting.
now what would it be defaulting to, i wonder?
it's either 0 or 1, afaik, so 3 won't be doing what you think it's doing, i'm pretty sure...

Manysh, this is a very interesting mod, good job ! The triangular shapes remind me Bender's Ultimate Environment square clouds, maybe an alpha channel problem ? I don't know :( I've tried myself to fiddle with the textures by adding alpha channel without success. If you can solve this problem, this will be a very nice cloud mod, it looks fantastic and it doesn't hit FPS at all.

Hi

Thank for replay guys.

Knochenlutscher you can get this colour on north korea map, i set late time, like 17:30, or something like that i don't really remember at the moment,, some seasons may give you good results.

I not really mod maker at all, but i spend all 2 weeks look on this problem, and i think this triangles, have something to do, with visibility distance. Visibility is drawn by game engine Spherical, if the clouds are on the edge of the Spheric , game engine start blend visibility ,and this clouds should vanish. Problem is, widescreen, (with is not supported by engine ) Spheric become Elliptic and  512 texture can't be drawn properly. This issue is different on every single map, and different time, seasons, ect..
I don't really know how clouds spots, are configured in game, if we can increase number of this spots,or increase visibility, problem will gone.
First I thought this numbers in  Data.cld file is clouds position ,but not. When i remove this numbers, clouds was in the same position, but I save FPS.Funny is, if you remove all this numbers ,game will crash :)
[GEN_TABLE]
   0.410260
   0.615040
   0.919614

   0.300180
   0.575701
   0.320353
   0.268746
etc..

I am sure someone from Ultra pack team, or SAS, has knowledge how this all works, you guys move clouds up :) This would bring much light for all :)

I will keep working, you keep testing :)

I tested this mod with HSFX 5.01 in the MODS folder and works very well. No issues, actually I like the clouds much better then Stock, I gained Fps and I like the flare effect.

I tested your mod with DBW 1.6. No issues,so far.The clouds look really awesome to me,especialy with my GAPA settings. The Cloud size, and the sun reflections seems very close to reallity, and it eats less FPS as some other cloud mods!!

Again,really good work,and many Thanxx.

Hi guys

I think I solved the problem with widescreen. I come with simple idea, to use mulilayer clouds, and it seems working well .
basic, first layer of clouds (512) are drawn to the end of visibility distance, and second layer (small 256 clouds) on the edge visibility distance. That may reduce FPS ( I have not tested yet ) but i don't thing is bad, my sigle core AMD 3500+ can handle, so your modern PC will be ok with this :) I do not see any triangles, except for small problems.
Now, i don't have time to test with all resolutions, i will leave this for you guys

I got nvidia and DBW cant see anything wrong, but then clouds is not a thing we are used too in this game lately. In early IL2 it was terrible to fly in rain and storm why have we lost that oppurtunety lately

DBW 1.6, Prokhorovka map, time 12:00, weather blind, clouds height 2000m, resolution 1600x900 ("Ecran wide" activated), GC Nvidia GT240M, all settings maxed up in conf.ini AFAIK. I have checked that no other cloud mod is activated (I love playing with clouds  :D), maybe the problem is on my side with my GC configuration ?

Evening, for that colour, Ok, thanks for the hint.
Test: Donbass, alt 5000m/Clodsheight 1750, hazy and bad, no probs here, no squares or strange stuff, it's sth. different from
your previous version, clouds are really bigger now.

As far as I switch to blind I get the squares as Korrigan, under blind I feel how it should look like, contrast is OK. Unfortunately Rain or Thunderstorm multiples the amount of squares of clouds and lessens the contrast between the dark and bright clouds too. The dark is very thick, plain, squared and like running thru chinese paper.

Did a second test on Crimea Mud?, same results for bad/hazy=excellent, blind=squares on top, rain/thunder not good.

NVIDIA GTS 450, CloudsType=1, I suppose it's my GC configuration too,
using Nvidia Inspector instead Nhancer.
I love playing with clouds too, recently threw Flushys over board, was a bit sad, well let's see.

No other fx Mod, curious Benders Environment is working flawless, in Big, tried even Huge, with no squares, strutters.

I see squares and triangles in 2nd version too. 2560*1600 but using Santobr FOV mod. Nvidia GTX295 on W7 64bits. I don't have this problem with Flushys cloud mod, or Bee cloud mod.

But, I see the same problem with Benders cloud mod and yours.

Thanks.

Right. i dont have time now,to check what is going wrong, but ... if you open Cloud4X4.mat file .....

multi layer clouds .....
This is a BIG one
[Layer1]
  TextureName               clouds4x4.tga
  PaletteName
  Frame                     0.0   // Float 0.0 - first, 1.0 - last
  VisibleDistanceNear       0.0
VisibleDistanceFar        1000.5 //.................... If you reduce this number,  it may help you
  TextureCoordScale         0.0 0.0  0.25 0.25     Uo   Vo   kU   kV
  ColorScale                1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0  R G B A

try play with this number, i will set up my PC to your resolutions later, I'm not at home right now ...

Knochenlutscher what driver you use ?? I have the same Nvida Gts450, AMD3500+ 3.25GB ram ..... work well

Manysh, working well for me, can't see any squares or triangles(I don't use widescreen, if that's relevant). I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of adding the data file for Huge clouds in Bender's mod to yours and I now get gigantic sky-filling clouds.

I think that the problem is not the mod, but the widescreen resolution. In fact, if I change my resolution to 4:3 I don't see any square or triangle. Probably the limit is in the game, not in the mod.

I can't upload screens now, but it's the same. The typical squares (square clouds) is what I see. I'm pretty sure you know what I'm referring. In 4:3 all is well.

I'm not using this mod, but a long time ago I had that squared clouds when I was testing large FOV (132º).
The squared clouds were in the corner of the screen, in front they were OK.

Has nothing to do with FOV, if I'm getting this without using FOV Mod.
That with squares, shadow-blisters or other stuff appearing at the screen edges is a game-limit, but if you have square clouds right in front of you. Dunno where the worm sits, maybe my Vista, Nvidia-Cyclepedia or maybe IL-2 not capable running too much HD Mods.
I get squares if using native "forced"4:3 1024x768 over conf.ini or my beloved 1280x1024,
we tried better Resolution, I could test up excellent, just bet my lousy underwear, I'll get squares. Squares is all I see.
These Mapsquares seems to be DBW issue, I'll get it with empty DBW folder?! Running out of ideas.

Hi
I came home and tested this mod at last 1.5 hour,I set up dedicated server, with this mod and four people play with no problem at all. I run game with all resolution including 640X480 ( I could not believe how it looks  ;D )  was not any squares, triangles, at all.

Korrigan i run all what you say, but on Ultra pack not DBW ( i dont thing is difference)
DBW 1.6, Prokhorovka map, time 12:00, weather blind, clouds height 2000m, resolution 1600x900 ("Ecran wide" activated), GC Nvidia GT240M, all settings maxed up in conf.ini AFAIK. No, you wrong, game engine is old we all now that, but all mods cheats game engine, if your card can't handle 512 texture in right spot that mean something is wrong with your card, driver, or settings.  i am pretty sure if i will remove long distance clouds, you will have the same problem. I was using nhancer before and i know, if you play too much with this software,or any other stuff, you may get something what is call  artifacts, problem is when you want back to default settings........... Nothing is bad with my card, settings or driver. Nothing. I know my work. Firstly, nHancer is not compatible with modern Nvidia drivers (250 and up). Second, I am not the only user who is experimenting this issue with your mod. Third, I don't see this bug with other cloud mods like Bee or Flushy. Fourth, if I go to 4:3 blocks don't appear. It's not a problem with texture size or my system don't handle 512Mb correctly.

I'm going to check with landgeom=2 to see.

Thank you.

Manysh, thanks for your help, the problem for me was the Landgeom setting indeed. Now I can enjoy your nice clouds  ;)

Not that you asked, I deinstalled my Gainward Tool (useless Tool), Nvidia Tools and deleted all Nvidia Drivers, rebooted, then installed Driver Sweeper and run in safe Mode under admin to delete everything with Nvidia, rebooting etc. according NVidia Forum hint for re-installation.
For the Registry, maybe there's some deadfile left, I can live with it, last time I used TuneUpUtillities and screwed my Registry it made more harm than everything else. Since I don't touch this part of my rig, all is well, in my eyes. I can't afford the risk formatting my rig in favour of a game, I need my rig for the job. You won't hear me crying no more, will just try out things others post, maybe there's a solution. Thanks for your support anyway

NHancer is outdated, was a very usefull Tool, but it's time is over. Instead NVidia Users can get free NVIDIA INSPECTOR,
no hidden stuff to search your butt off in this Tool, everything minimal and compressed at hand.

LandGeom=3   ---->  triangels
LandGeom=2   ---->  no triangels

Holy sh ???, works, get freaky, Thanks a bunch, let's go for Clouds

Hi,

Thank you for your work, great clouds.

I also initially had problems with the triangles and have found that it with the setting of "LandGeom" in the conf.ini related.

LandGeom=3   ---->  triangels
LandGeom=2   ---->  no triangels

My configuration: DBW 1.6, resolution 1600x900, Ecran wide, NVIDIA GeForce GT555M, Driver 280.26

Sorry for my english.

Jan

Man Thank you !! Your English is better than mine, thanks !!  ;)

I made some improvements, so new version 2.1 in first post

Thank you

Hi There,

Here's a few screens from WIP Java map

It's around 3pm and poor weather conditions landgeometry 2

I prefer the original size screen version as Win 7 hates full screen game

I have this note in my cong.ini:

LandGeom=3 * Added a new mode for increased visibility distance. Visibility increased from 36 km to 72km under "Clear" and "Good" weather conditions.

I think you just confirm my theory, because i use LandGeom=3 and have no problem with this clouds now, but before, when i have single layer clouds I have this problem with triangles, etc.I am not 100% sure, but that may be Nvidia drivers issue. Nevermind is working :) Still trying to change a little color and light to those clouds, so work in progress :)

:D You know what, I can run LandGeom=3 without having squares, all I did was forgot that I exited/switched off this green icon Nvidia Panel from Taskbar. Just tried accidently with 3, was wondering.
The other way around, leaving Nvidia Settings Panel in taskbar, produces squares under 3.
Now that I know for sure, I made it blacklisted in my Gamebooster v.3.
Really cool work MANYSH, thanks a bunch for all your help and care

very interesting :) so you switched off all Nvidia settings for this game. I wiil send this idea to my mate, he want keep LandGeom=3 but he  have problem with squares, will see how it goes. Thanks Knochenlutscher

You were right Knochenlutscher is working :) My mate tested that, and he say the same, its WORKING :D. So basically it must be driver settings issue from nvidia. Thank you

I have used every cloud mod in the known universe and there was always an issue(s) with each , usually causing fps drop and/or increase in stuttering. This mod is without a doubt the BEST! Great realistic looking clouds , no fps drop and no additional stuttering! Well done and many thanks!

Thanks for comments

If for any reasons you guys thinking the previous version was better for you, let me know I may try to remove all issues and upload again, But i think 2.1a is eating less FPS from all previous version. I may be wrong :)

This mod should surely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, be one of the basic mods added to every install, no matter what version. It changes, and vastly improves the appearance of clouds immensely. And without any noticeable loss of frs either ... in fact, on my install clouds are now never a factor of slowing down ...

This mod is a fine piece of work.

I think the line "TypeClouds=X" should be in the [game] section of your conf.ini and the value should be set to 1.

check you folders structure

-UP2.01 = ../MODS/Clouds BIG V2/Effects/clouds
-UP3.0 = ../#UP#/Clouds BIG V2/Effects/clouds
-DBW = ../#DBW/Clouds BIG V2/Effects/clouds

if you extracted the big cloud archive there inside UP folder you may get Clouds BIG V2.1a\Clouds BIG V2.1a and that may be problem :)

if in your config.ini you have "TypeClouds=" remove this, you not need it

The o.ly reason I hold off on this is that te AI can still see through them.
Otherwise they look great!

Are there any other clouds, modded or not where the AI can NOT look through?

So if all clouds have the same AI quirk, why not go for the best cloud mod in appearance and frps?

no that's why I don't use cloud mods...

Cheers!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot for this wonderful mod that gave another boost in this sim!

However in F2 view I get much clouds flickering which almost doesn´t happen in F1 or F3 views. The funny thing too is when in F2 I change view with the mouse it stops flickering. See this video

https://www.mediafire.com/?8c142bkhy0wfxw5

I´m on UP 3.0RC4/ GTX 680 -306.23/ Benq 24" @ 1920x1080 120hz

Thanks,

Also I´d noticed that seen in F2 from above or below it doesn´t flicks, only in central/horizontal FOV it happens..

Solve it! I was using a Benq gaming monitor but in a Dell U2711 doesn´t flicker at all, works great. It might be some config in the Benq.

A great Modification, truely a legend. What's a modded IL-2 without these proper clouded skies.
Everytime after a reinstall it's this Mod I need to have back the most, when flying through default emptyness.
I haven't tested 2.1a with my new hardware yet, I was on 2.1 all the time, will give it a go.
Thanks MANYSH

I can see why the game came with the underwhelmingly small cumulus clouds. Being represented as an agglomeration of textures, visually they behave differently from a modeled object, like a plane or building. The best way to see this? With this Big Cloud mod installed, go to a wide FOV of at least 90 degrees. Observe the overlap region between any two fairly close clouds when you are very close to one of them. You will often find the cloud edge changing position VERY significantly! Often times going from full overlap to wide clear sky gaps. So just by swinging your gaze (especially with head tracking) you can alter the obstruction and see past the clouds where you should not.

The underlying reason is this. Simulators use the gnomonic projection, the characteristics being well seen at very wide FOVs beyond about 90 degrees. The enlargement for far off-axis angles becomes considerable. A 'sprite' is not similarly stretched, and so with increasing off-axis angle becomes progressively undersized with respect to the landscape and other objects built upon polygons.

The cloud modelling seems to strive to overcome this by building a cloud from a number of textures in their own little cluster. But when you get close to such a cloud, the angular separation between some of these texture centers can become large enough for the differential stretching to have an impact.

The cure--outside of modelling from polygons--is a more densely populated cluster of textures as view distance decreases. But of course the issues of frame rate lowering must be considered.

And so right now one should not employ very large FOVs when close to these clouds. My 'default' is 105 degrees, which well reveals this odd behavior. But I don't like a smaller FOV, except when zooming for detail for limited periods.

I've started a thread (with download link) for my own investigations on these clouds over in the New Member Safety Area. My notes on my findings--and the DATA.cld file I use--might be of interest.

I find (in 4.08) that the frame rate seems to be more affected by DENSITY (cloud numbers) than by BASE_R_DISP (cloud size.) And so I have the former set to 1, and the latter set to 4.5 (with base at 1000m, tops go to about 7000m in thunder.)

To get all clouds on a common base height (which is virtually universal in nature), make the F_UP and F_DOWN parameters zero for both LEVELS.

This is all noted in a fairly thorough readme.txt file...
