Title: 900x440km RLV map (night / hi-alt map) ~London to Leipzig; beta v0.5
Post by: sputnikshock on June 18, 2011, 12:39:12 PM
Large RLV_Night map BETA v0.5

-----------------------------------------------
CHANGES IN v0.5:
-Newer, better, more realistic forrest areas
-Rotterdam and Hamburg ports fixed
-Koblenz is now located where it should be
-New airfield RAF West Raynham
-Missing runway plates fixed
-----------------------------------------------

~900 x 440km 1:1 scale map. Covering London, the Netherlands, Belgium, northern France and northwestern Germany (incl. the Ruhr area, Cologne, Farnkfurt, Hannover, Hamburg, Leipzig, Dessau, Chemnitz, Schweinfurt).
Extensive river network. SRTM derived map_h.

This is intended as a nightfighting map (but should be good enough for high altitude daylight missions as well), therefore:
THE MAP IS UNPOPULATED, TEXTURING IS VERY BASIC, THERE IS NO MANUAL FMB TOUCHUP OF map_h, MEANING IN SOME PLACES RIVERS MIGHT STILL FLOW UPHILL IN NARROW VALLEYS...
...and the 'low altituders' among you would probably be disappointed with this map.

The map would need more work still, but is fully playable and considered 'good-enough' for (beta) release. I am not working on it currently, so a final version will only be around in the far future. In the meantime, feel free to improve this map further yourself.

http://www.mediafire.com/?z1091hep0zrho8r (http://www.mediafire.com/?z1091hep0zrho8r)

Airfields on the map:

1. Modelled after historic prototypes:
- Muenster-Handorf (on custom texture)
- Rheine-Hopsten
- Venlo (Rwys only)

2. Modelled after historic prototype typologies (for example: 3 concrete runways in triangular layout, etc):
- Luebeck-Blankensee
- Stade
- Nordholz
- Wittmundhafen
- Varel
- Leeuwarden
- Neuruppin
- Vechta
- Wunstorf
- Stendal
- Twente
- Plantluenne
- Rheine (Bentlage)
- Jueterbog
- Deelen
- Volkel
- Eindhoven
- Kassel-Rothwesten
- Koeln-Butzweilerhof
- Bonn-Hangelar
- Langendiebach
- St. Trond
- Le Culot
- Florennes
- Cambrai

3. RAF airfields (many are simplified versions of 352nd cross channel map airfields):
- RAF Lympne
- RAF Hawkinge
- RAF Manston
- RAF Detling
- RAF East Church
- RAF Rochford
- RAF Horn Church
- RAF Stapleford
- RAF North Weald
- RAF Martlesham Heath
- RAF Watton
- RAF Horsham St. Faith
- RAF Coltishall
- RAF Oulton
- RAF West Raynham

For those preferring a greenish H2S like overview map, you can download it here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?spxf2v02tsu368w (http://www.mediafire.com/?spxf2v02tsu368w)

and change the MAP2D entry in the load.ini from ed_map_1.tga to ed_map_1-RAF.tga.

For the mission builders, here are three "empty" mission files. One contains all the radio beacons and runway lights, a second one additionally contains flak and searchlights (Checkyerflak! mod by CY6 required), and a third one is for daytime missions, as it has only the beacons and flak (=no landing lights, no blind landing aids and no searchlights). Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?m32b0ybr2bs2sqt (http://www.mediafire.com/?m32b0ybr2bs2sqt)

Enjoy the map and happy (night)fighting.

Hi Sputnik,
Thank You for that wonderful map!
Ist there any chance to create Qiuck Missions for that map?
Honestly speaking - I'm not so good missions - creator....
Thank You.

Great work Sputnikshock !!!

It will be the right "sandbox" for the Mosquito NF.30.   A good motivation to continue the work on this plane !

Thank You for this great MAP

Well, given that a Mossie at cruise speed would need about 3h to fly across the map east-west, I wouldn't necessarily speak of 'sandbox'... LOL

The "old" version with the bumpy plates works fine in DBW. I haven't had a chance to download the "new" version because my home was without power for 24 hours because of a big storm.
I found that I only had to load the new map textures.

I can not get this to load with DBW, tried the original and the new beta version.

The map shows up in the list, but when i try and load it i get a blue screen with the following message at the bottom.

World.Land().LoadMap()error.Java.lang.RuntimeException:Landscape'RLV_Night/load.ini'loading error.

anyone please have any suggestions, has to what this means and a possible workaround?

many thanks

Did you put the "Handorf.tga" into the Tex/land/summer/RLV folder?

Without this tga, you'll get a map error.

Yeah, i followed the readme, copied the folder
Quote
Inside the 'RLV_Night' you will find a folder named '_copy contents to the _Tex folder inside your Mapmods-Maps folder'.

which has the Handorf TGA in the correct place.

i have been through the installation a few times, to make sure i have it right. I'm stumped, if you have got it working in DBW it must be something particular to my installation.

Cheers Boomer for the advice, i have copied all the files as you mentioned above, i did not know about the shift/tab to get the error report, so i will try that when i get home from work and see what is missing.

This is the first map i have tried to add under DBW so i hope i am on the right track, i have however loaded quite a few maps under my old 4.09m installation, so i am not completley new to the process.

Just to be clear i treat the #DBW folder as the 'mod' folder in previous installations? Altough as the map appears in my map list it must be in the correct place.

This is really weird,

I have just done a complete new install of DBW, carried out the instructions in the readme to the letter, and i am still getting the same error, really stumped now as to what it can be.

Could someone who has this working please post their mapmods folder, so i can try with a confirmed working folder.

Your game should look like this

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/#DBW/MapMods/maps/_Tex/land/summer/RLV/Handorf.tga

If you follow the path through the game, and you end with Handorf.tga, your map should load without error. Handorf.tga is the only new thing in this map.

part of the error message says 'water map will not load' i seem to have textures missing but i cannot see how, i have a clean install of 4.101 followed by UP3.0 and then DBW, have tried to install under UP3.0 and DBW using switcher still can not get it to load.

pissing me off now, thanks for your help

slipper,

could you PM me a screenshot of your FMB with shift/tab active?
Also, when loading the map in FMB, do you actually see the map or is it just a blank screen?

No clue what the problem might be but am sure we will sort it out here.

Thanks all for your help,

Yes i have downloaded a few times and tried it, with no luck. Its made me wonder if there is something basically wrong with my install, but i installed over a new 4.101 upgraded with UP3.0 and then DBW, so i cant see where i might have gone wrong.

In work at the moment but will post/pm a screen shot of the error log. Do not really want to do a full reinstall if i can help it, weird thing is that it happens with UP3.0 and DBW so it must be files common to both. Everything else seems to be working fine though and even added other maps.

Cheers all

For some reason i can not take a screenshot of the error screen. If i load a map i can take a screenshot, if i try to load this map i get a plain blue map screen with the error message, but print screen does not seem to work with it.

Thanks for all your help i think i am going to do a complete reinstall, its bugging me that there is something wrong i am not sure of and i do not want it reappearing again.

once again thanks for all your help, i will let you know how i get on.

Right i have done a full reinstall and still the same problem, i have also noticed that i cannot load any of the channel maps 40-45 i get the same error, so i guess it must be something to do with these textures as this map uses them.

Can anybody else confirm that their channel maps load ok please in DBW.

p.s were can i find the full download of Channel tga's?

I just double-checked the load.ini and texture folder. All the CAN_Channel textures used in the map are in the texture folder that comes with the install. So unless there's something wrong with your texture folder paths, it is unlikely that your problem is related to the CAN_Channel textures.
Anyway, it would be most helpful if you could load the map in FMB, hit shift+tab and then make a screenshot by hitting the 'print' or 'printscreen' key on your keyboard. In GIMP/PS/PSB etc then create a new empty image and hit ctrl+v to paste your screenshot.
If you could PM it or post it here we could see the error log and then it shouldn't be too difficult to solve this riddle.

Success at last !

After everything i have done, reinstalled twice, spent ages trying to track down the paths for tga's, the answer in the end was simple.

I had been playing about with the IL-2 executable selector, and accidentally disabled the '4GB adress space' check box. I could kick myself, can not believe it was something so simple, hope it may be a lesson, or help someone else out in the same position.

Thank you all for perservering with me on this, and for your valuable help.

Thanks Sputnikshock for a really excellent map.

I am sorry I somehow managed to omit the .mis file when I packed the map, and when I realized this I couldn't find the file anymore. Anyway, as Nachtjagd Mission Generator 3 is available now, it will generate all the runway lights, beacons, flak, searchlights etc for this map.

By the way is there anyway i can obtain .mis containing all the runway lights, beacons, flak, searchlights etc for this map, from within NMG3 at all please?
Also wondering if there are any plans to extend the map at all? Would love to see the North East of England and East Anglia included for realistically placed Bomber bases, would also be nice to have 'The Big City', Berlin at the other end.

Sutnikshock

I have been playing around with this map in the unlocked fmb, adding detail to airfields and cities etc. I deally i would like the map to include the eastern uk so that RAF and USAAF bomber airfields, Berlin, Dresden, Nuremburg and Dresden may be included.

I have asked for some advice on expanding a map, but so far no luck, is there anyway you might be willing to expand the map please? i would be willing to add textures, airfields etc, i just need the map made bigger.

Hi  Cheers for this massive map.

I have installed it under 4.09m and is playable.

My only gripe is the land textures at night are far to bright for nightfighting.  Are there any dark textures available that I can use to make the landscape so dark that it cant be seen from above 1000m?

apart from that its a great bomber command map.

Cheers

It's something you can do yourself in let's say 15 minutes time.
Open the .tga files in your photo editing program. If you don't have one download GIMP (Freeware) and decrease brightness and/or contrast to your taste and save it with the same name.
Don't forget to back up the original .tga's. Just in case...  ;)

Tried it today but doesnt work.  I have opened files with GIMP, changed mode to RGB, adjusted brightness/contrast , chnaged mode back to indexed and saved.  Map wont load   Dont see any errors.

Wonder if anyone else has any luck darkening the textures.

This is the way I edit textures: in Gimp changing mode to RBG, adjusting brightness/contrast or whatever (I don't select 'indexed' afterwards). Instead of 'save' try 'save as'  and save it as a .tga with the same name. When a window pops up and says something like 'this filename already exists, do you want to overwrite?' click Yes and in the next screenie uncheck 'RLE compression'.
Just try it out with just one edited texture and leave the rest unedited, when the map loads go ahead with the rest of the textures.

If the map still won't load press SHIFT TAB and a list shows up. At the bottom of it you'll see what's wrong.

I can not try it out myself because I don't have this map installed.

On the subject of darkness, is there something that can be done generally re the lighting on the map to make it darker? I remember Avala was messing with a "lighting" file in his Serbia map.

As well, are the runway lights a mod or a stock feature of Il-2? I have never flown at night before. If they are a mod, where do I d/l it?

Aarrrrrrrrrrrgh! I had just written an excessive answer to your post when I ccidently hit the back buton in my browser!  :'(
So I this will a quick one now. Sorry for the shorthand.  :(
But first, welcome to the dark side of the Il-2 day.  ;)

Ok, runway lights:
- lights themselves have been around a long time.
- runway lights only being turned on at your request with airifelds being darkened by default (as they should be in a warzone)
  was added in v4.10.
- how to use:
   1. Open map or mission in FMB
   2. In the objects menu select stationary objects and scroll down until you find Lighttype 1, 2, 3 and 4.
   3. #1 and 4 are white lights (different intensity), #2 and 3 are red and green lights
   4. Place on airfield(s)
   5. Lights by default are assigned to army/side white(none). Such lights will be ALWAYS ON.
   6. To have lights being turned of and only come alive when request them from tower, assign them to your own army/side.
   7. In order for the tower to actually turn them on, you need to: request them, be close to the airfield  (very close! ;), and no enemy
      planes in the vicinity.*

Night lighting:
- since 4.10 Il-2 has a new dynamic night lighting engine. (Most important new feature IMHO, together with radio navigation).
- This means Il-2 sets night darkness according to lunar phase, thus mission date
- A default FMB date (15/6/40 IIRC) is a very bright night. Lookup a historical new moon date and adjust by going forward and backward in
time by 2- or 3-day steps until you like what you see (FMB night lighting preview is misleading! Check by flying on this date).
- Finally, you can add a bit of weather, poor or blind for example.
- With these steps, you will be able to get very dark nights in Il-2. It can become pitch black darkness actually  :)

EDIT: Next paragraph can be disregarded. Please see Uufflakke's comments in the next post.
If however you still feel the need to tune down land brightness in the map, it can be done.
It's a hassle if you use a map that comes with the stock game or mod pack you are using. If it's a downloaded extra map in your mods folder however, it's not too diffcult.
First create a set of new textures you would like to use, or change existing ones and save them with a new name. Then, open the load.ini of the map you'd like to change, and adjust the map texture paths in this file so they point to the textures you just saved. Now fix all bugs  ;D. No big deal in theory, but as always, one will make small mistakes somewhere and then spend ages finding them...
You will find all the necessary in-depth info in this procedure in the SAS mapmaking forums.

Tuning down textures was a v4.09 technique for nightflying (most prominent example: asheshouse's Ruhr map).
However, with the new lighting model and proper mission date this is no longer necessary in 4.10 IMHO.

Light mods:
- Santobr's Relistic Lights v1.5 tweaks the appearance of runway lights.
  http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3718.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3718.0.html)
It's a great mod, but do a before/after comparison, because depending on your install it may not be necessary to use it.**
- My own Realistic Airfield Lighting v1.0 (beta)
  http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,21562.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,21562.0.html)
Adds low visibility taxiway lighting (always on but invisible from the air).

Anyway, as always, try without mods first and see if everything works.

Notes:
* On certain airfields, on certain maps, under certain conditions (we still don't understand this really) there is a known bug that the game ignores your request for landing lights. Very rare, but can happen. Thread here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,18834.0.html  (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,18834.0.html)

** Lights used for runway lights are the same lights used as a/c nav lights. Therefore, any mod or modpackage that modifies aircraft lights, has an effect on runway lighting as well. Can lead to lights being too bright, too dark, too whatever, and this is exactly where this mod comes in handy.

Ooops, became a long post again. Anyway, hope I could shed some light on nightflying in Il-2.

Best

@Sputnikshock: Making landscapes darker can be done in an easier way just by changing the two parameters of the Landlight.mat.
That's a lot easier than editing texture for texture and changing their path in the load.ini.
The Landlight.mat file is responsible for brightness, darkness and contrast.
Something Avala explained in another thread.

Both screenshots were taken in clear weather conditions at 14.00 o'clock.
I changed the .mat file to a more extreme value just to show what happens.

Uuflakke and Sandbag,

I normally index any tex file that I modify - and I have modified probably a hundred of them. It reduces the file size to about 1/3.

As Uuf pointed out, the important thing is to uncheck RLE compression, as the files need to be uncompressed for the game to accept them.

This is still my favorite map.  I love those long flights to the targets.
Wish we could bomb Berlin.

I agree with Sandbag69. For the gameplay and atmosphere it creates, this is a great map.

Downloaded and installed by the book but my HSFX 6 just closes to desktop.  All other stuff works fine.  Any ideas?

Yep, you messed up your all.ini entry...e.g.  :-\  ;)
That is a failure that happens when you mess an all.ini entry and start the game.
More info!
During gamestart or mission start.?
What does the load text (shift + tab) read when you try to load the map ingame-in case you can load the game.
90% sure if the game crashes while loading, you messed the all.ini text or forgot to add it..ir have a double entry..

Are there any limitations for using this map for day time operations? It looks interesting to me for a RLV day time campaign :)

I am not working on it currently, so a final version will only be around in the far future.

What news about this map? It work perfectly in HSFX 7.02, but there is a hope for new, better, versions?

In the forseeable future, Motörhead, unfortunately not.
However, if someone wants to take this on and bring it to the next level, feel free to do so. And no worries, your efforts will not be spoiled by an "official" release once your done ;).

cheers
