The SAS F#cking Bid Default Skinmod (SAS FBDSM)

by SAS~CirX, SAS~CrazyFlak and SAS~Riken

SFS archives Packed by UP~HaDeS

-----------------------------------------------
Introduction:

The first purpose of this series of mods is to update all the stock slot aircraft default skins in IL2 1946, to a more or less level standard.
The standard will correspond roughly to the new skins introduced in the 4.09 option skins update from 1C, or better.

This series deals exclusively with stock aircraft. modded aircraft can have ther own skins updated if needed.

The second purpose of this series of mods is to introduce a few new default theaters to IL2 (or more to the point, to provide default skins for those theaters when they are released)

Currently IL2 has only 3 available Map theaters : Summer, Winter and Desert. Summer is the default.
Summer is for all maps, with winter as an additional skin for planes that carried winter camouflage, to use on winter maps.
Desert is currently both for planes engaged in the pacific theater as well as the Mediteranian.

We will eventualy change all the pacific maps to something else, and assign DESERT exclusively to North Africa.

This skinmod replaces our previous SFS default skinmod.

It will come in parts. The first release is part 1,2,3,4,5. We divide these into archives smaller than 100mb each, to ease downloading.

Part 1,2,3,4 and 5 are a collection of updated SUMMER and WINTER skins for 307 instances of those in IL2. They are roughly split in alphabetical order.

Part 7 will contain only the aviaskins new 3d MIG-3 default skins

Part 8 will consist mainly of new and reassigned Desert Skins for the mediteranian theater. It will also contain some inevitable fixes

Part 9 will focus on a new PACIFIC theater, as well as other default replacements and fixes.

Part 10 onwards will continue replacing defaults, adding fixes and updates, and adding theaters as the Map mods to support them appear (without them, all the planes flying on that map will simply use their SUMMER skin)

This series of mods are presented in SFS format, courtecy of UltraPack. This is to minimise loading time. In tests on a clean 4.101 install with basic SAS modact, the game with the new default skins actualy seemed to load on average 0.3 seconds faster. We have no idea why! But its cool!

This mod is not aimed at replacing all skins in IL2, only those in need of it. It is also not intended to give every aircraft the "coolest skin there is". A default skin is actualy a very hard thing to do, it has to be believable, yet generic, immersive yet neutral, tastefull yet universally acceptable, and those are very hard to come by.

----------------------------------------------
Credit and Process:

Skins for this mod was and will be obtained from numerous sources.
Many skins from the previous SAS Default skinmod, as well as HSFX, UP, and other collections were reviewed and used. many of the skins come from collections built up over years, and some skins were even custom made especially for this pack. In some instances the stock skin of a plane was good enough to be used as a template, and various recolours, saturations, correcting of lines and other graphic improvements were made. Most of the skins from IL2 skinners used were also modified to some extent where needed to provide an acceptable DEFAULT skin. Generally, skins that came with the 4.09 optional stock skin update were not worked on, with a few exceptions.

Also newly released material from TD were in most cases not touched, as they tended to be good quality already. Skins of the "ACES" were also not edited, as they are just a complete waste of space.

DESERT skins of current planes have been heavily updated, but are held back from part 1-5, since part 7 will focus on them in better detail.

We eventually found it an impossible task to trace all the skinners, template makers and artists who's work are contained in this.

We ask forgiveness if a credit is ommited, and if contacted we will correct this immediately. We are very very thankfull for the astonishing amount of work skinners and template makers have put into their work, and we are very thankfull to use then in this.

The list of skinners and template makers will only be here in this Mod's download thread, and we will update it easily if we hear of an ommision. If your name appears here twice or more, it is just our mistake, but, you probably deserve it anyway! :D

Credits and Thank You, to these skinners, template makers and skin editors, who made this package possible:

Installation for users of UP3:

NOTE: SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING FBDSM SFS FILES FOR USERS OF SAS MODACT 3.06 OR LATER:  You dont have to add lines to your .rc file, just copy the SFS files from this mod, into your SAS_SFS folder, replacing the placeholders already there.

NOTE: SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING FBDSM SFS FILES FOR USERS OF ULTRAPACK 3 and/or DARK-BLUE-WORLD:  You dont have to add lines to your .rc file, just copy the SFS files from this mod, into your main game folder, replacing the placeholders already there.

Installation For Other Packs and older modacts than SAS 3.06(short version):

Users of the old SAS Default skinmod, in either MODS form of in SFS (SAS_Skins01.sfs) should remove it and its entry into their .rc file completely, it is totally obsolete now.
Also remove any other default skinmods you may have, as they will cause this to not load into your game completely.

1) Copy the archive .sfs  file you extracted form your download into your main game folder
2) Find the .rc file in your FILES folder (or MODS Folder, depending on your installation) in your main game folder. Open it with wordpad or notepad. At the bottom of the file, find the lines that MOUNT sfs archives. Find the last line, it will be

#preload REGISTER

and just above it, enter the lines for the SFS archives you have placed in your install. The lines for the first 6 parts will for example be:
Just check your particular install.

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

Save and close the file, and you are done.

Installation for Other Packs and older modacts than SAS 3.06 (Better explained):

Users of the old SAS Default skinmod, in either MODS form of in SFS (SAS_Skins01.sfs) should remove it and its entry into their .rc file completely, it is totally obsolete now.
Also remove any other default skinmods you may have, as they will cause this to not load into your game completely.

To install any .SFS mod, you simply copy the SFS archive into your main IL2 game folder (where all the other SFS files are already)

In UP3x, there will perhaps already be "placeholder" SFS archives with the same names in your install. They will be empty archives that you can simply replace with these, no other steps needed.

For other users, you must then find the .rc file for your particular modactivator or pack.

In most packs like HSFX, this file will be in the FILES folder.
In older SAS Modactivators it will also be in the FILES folder

Once you have it, make a backup of it for safe keeping. The open it with any text editor like wordpad.

At the end of the file, you will see a list of SFS archives and the order they get loaded in. Archives lower on the list will overwrite content in archives higher on the list.

The list may look something like this (this is just a short extract, not the whole list):

@sfs MOUNT fb_maps15.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_maps16.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_maps17.sfs

@sfs MOUNT fb_sound.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound05.sfs

@sfs MOUNT SASSound01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT SASBasic27.sfs

#preload REGISTER
@file .preload

So, to make the game load the new SFS archive on startup, you need to add it to this list, like this

@sfs MOUNT THE_NAME_OF_THE_NEW_ARCHIVE_HERE.sfs

so, for example, for an archive called "sasup_fbdsm_07.sfs", the line will look like this:

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_07.sfs

NOTE: You must be carefull to not add incorect lines, or lines for archives you dont have in your game folder. This will cause your game to crash after 5% of loading. You can choose to load any or all the FBDSM skinmod parts seperately as you choose. They can all be in your install, if they have a line in the .rc file, they will load, if not, they wont.

Now the next thing you must take care of, is where you add the line.

There will be a general suggestion for every such SFS mod, pay heed to it.

For the Default Skin Mods, we recommend you add the lines right at the end, right BEFORE the line that reads:

#preload REGISTER

So, for example, In my installation it looks like this:

Quote
....
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound05.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound06.sfs

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

#preload REGISTER
@file .preload

Install the additional archive in this series always after the first one, so, if I installed the first 6 parts, the lines will look like this:

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

And then you are done. If you did it incorrectly, your game will either crash at 5%, or the new default skins will not be visible.
If you did do it right, you will have beautifull new default skins to look at. To see a list of skins changed in parts 1 to 4, see below:

Congrats on the first SFS release :D and a great one too!

Thanx, but it is not our first by a long shot. We have had the soundmods in SFS for more than a year already, and most of our modact in it since this year :)

Thanks for the awesome job you did with this collection, a great improvement indeed!

Actually, I am not sure how much Hades will include. I assume the new UP will mostly only have the usual selection of new def skins, to keep the DL size for other more improtant stuff. There will however be a number of "placeholder" SFS files in the new UP, that you can just drop these downloads into and replace, so it wont affect your online crt or anything. It has all ben "organised". ;)

Great Skin mod! but why FW190A4,5 skins look like painted with oil? I am really not sure if FW190A4 should be painted as it as in history, which was introduced in 4.09patch?

crazyflak, thanks for your explanation on it. maybe just for me, I feel the Fw190A4 A5 skin theme is totally different with others, seems A4 A5 are made of different material. LOL but as you said, there are lot of skins need to be done first, I will be waiting for your further update on the skin mod. Thanks for your great work on it.

Unfortunately some of the skins don't match up with hsfx5... the zeros and the mig3s. I didn't put the zeros in and tried using the sfs extractor to delete the mig3 part of the sasup_fbdsm_04sfs file but I don't know how to get it to work. Is there a version that is not in sfs format. My pc is fast and load times don't worry me.  I would love to be able to customize my own default skins to the models I have in my install. Old crappy skins really erk me. Even when it's on a plane i don't ever fly. It's like an obsessive compulsion to have all my defaults skins matching...heheh

Damn, I forgot that HSFX has the new migs, and UP will probably also. I will do an Part 6 or 7 option that will adress that. We have to do new skins for japancats zeros anyway, the ones they have are not so good.

Regarding the zero's, the thread expressly states that part 6 is at this time only for users of the stock zeros.

To fix your issues at this time, do not have part 6 in hsfx5, and extract the migs from hsfx's archives with sfs extractor and put the default skins in your mods folder.

Thanks guys for not only this default skin pack but all of the work to help make IL2 what it really is becoming. Looking forward to UP3.0. I am so grateful that this sim is still getting better after 10 years. I do agree that the FW A series skins, and the PE2 series, and the Il2 series of skins could be looked at in your future work. With UP3.0, Mod act, DCG, and 4.10+ patches things are really coming together. Thanks again guys for all of your time and hard work!

Hi everyone

With the Help of Sani, we have posted two mirrors in the first post where users can, if they want, download the entire FBDSM Part 1 to 5 in one go.

Part 6 is not in there, because it deals with Default Zeros, while many have Japancat's Zeros. We will in future post an alternative archive 6 for JC's zero's, at a time when there are some more skins available for it.

Coming up soon (this week) in a new thread is part 7, which is for people using the new MiG3 models from aviaskins, as well as right after that some big archives, dealing with the Desert war, the Pacific, Burma, and the Spanish Civil war default skins (as well as a small map mod to make those work for guys who will not have UP3, or the future SAS UP3 map pack)

Naturaly so long as some visible credit is given; recommend in 'Visitor' TTF font its like LCD digital pixel style and can be typed as small as to be read clearly at 8 pixels actual height.

Title: Re: The SAS F#cking Big Default Skinmod (SAS FBDSM) PART 1-6
Post by: Thunda on May 31, 2011, 03:46:05 AM
Ok- thanks for that- I wasnt aware it was a work in progress. Its certainly not that I dont like VVS camo, its just the low quality of the standard skins (panel lines, rivets etc) that I dont like. When you put them up against 3rd party skinners (like the guys that are credited in the FBDSM mod-) then you gotta agree, there is no comparison.

What I have done is added the old skin mod from my UI1.2 install, which has fixed all the Yaks/Laggs/Me109's, although I will have to do something about the Fw190's.

(have you applied the 409m skins patch?)

this is my guess also, you probably dont have that yet. This mod works alongside that patch. We have had not reason to reskin most of the planes in that patch yet, as those skins (109's,190's,Yaks and laggs) are quite nice.

I think it should have. How big is your fb_3do20.SFS file?

post a screenshot of any of the LaGG or La fighters,  in the default skin that you say is not good, and then we will know for sure if we are talking about the same thing.

When I click the 'add image' button, I just get [img][img] in the reply box, and no option to 'point' at the folder where the image is.

the lanck is a franken, it is not realy truly skinable, other than by guys who realy know their stuff, and there is no void for it. So it is also not being covered currently by this mod.

As for other planes from UP3, yes, as of the next archives (being uploaded later this week), this skinmod is customised to cover the planes and slots from UP3 exactly, because it is also the base pack we are using for our first big "offline" pack.(in fact, our "pack" will just be a small download for sas modact, you will be required to install UP3 to use it)

Which F4Us exactly, and under which country, do you refer to?

The F4U skins in this mod ate in any case very early attempts, before we "found our groove". They can definitely be improved.

I flew the F4U A, C, and D with USAAF, USN, RN, and RNZAF markings, but the skin was the same each time; the same default skin shown before I ever installed the mod.

Also, the F4U series had beautiful defaults in UP-2.01, but in UP-3.0, they were switched back to the skins used in stock 4.09.  Was that supposed to happen?

Dunno, UP3 is not a continious development of UP2, it is a completely new and different pack.

Hmmm, okay, I have this installed for UP3 RC2 and DBW 1.0.  From what I've seen, every plane seems to work for every country(definitely one of the more tedious testing jobs I've done in a while...), and with the exception of the Bf 109G-6(early) for Hungary and Finland.  In both modpacks with this installed, the plane is unflyable for these two countries.  It doesn't show up in the preview box in QMB and when you click to fly it loads to the mission without crashing but it goes straight to the weird screen with what looks like water below and sky above. (Note, Finland(Postwar) in DBW does work).

Edit: I have no other mods besides these two packs and the FBDSM 1-5/7-9 installed.

Crazyflak is correct. This is a bug in the UP3 base. It has already been identified and fixed for the next updates.

In my infinite wisdom and glory installed pack 6 and now most of the zero default skins are all messed up,  any help as to how I can fix this?

Hmmm... uninstall pack 6...? The pack is only for the default Zeros, as it says on the page.  I'm guessing you have a pack with Japancat's updates A6Ms in it, which this version of Pack 6 doesn't work for.  Hopefully they'll get out a working one soon :).  Just delete the sfs line from the .rc file and that should do it.

yes, delete it, the take one of the other placeholders you may have, like part 12 or 13 (placeholders are only about 25kb big), make a copy of it, and name the copy sasup_fbdsm_06.sfs

Hi mates!

Just a little question about part 6 and JC Zero:

The skin in part 6 we have atm are for stock planes and can't be used by the JC ones and is specified that a compatible version 'll be developed in the future...but the stock and the JC have different skin name entry (and if I understand correctly the working behaviour of the FBDSM too) that 'll avoid any strange issue between , why the new part 6 can't be anyway developed as an update of the existing one to allow have all Zeroes new skins in a single and common part 6 without must choose one of them?

I'm asking because even if the JC new Zeroes are a must I have a lot of old stock zeroes skins that I love and still use....

All the best!

walter

Thank you very much, they are fantastic. :D

 Do they work with 4.09? Is there to do some modification to work with this patch?

 In UP3.0 I have them working perfectly but in UP 2.01 and HSFX 5.0.1 do not get to work.

 Not that I'm doing wrong. :(

 Greetings and thank you.

No they don't work in 409m... I would need to reduce the categories available here http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,8262.0.html to match the ones used in 410m. Then add an rc. file in the mods folder to get the game read the extra SFS files and modify all the load.ini files from maps.

For HSFX5 you would need it to be able to "read" more SFS files by adding an rc. file in the mods folder for HSFX and modify all the load.ini files from maps. Unfortunately, it will not work online or with "expert mode" activated ... You cannot use customised installs for online play with other vanilla HSFX users.

Ok, thank you very much Crazyflak.

Howdy,

I just installed DBW on top of UP3 4RC and all is well. But when I installed this skin pack I wasn't able to see any new skins. The (sasup_fbdsm) files were extracted and then dumped into the main IL2 folder, replacing the placeholder files, but I don't see any new skins anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.  :)

I am not sure I understand exactly, but if it is that you dont see additional skin choices, then, this does not give you new skins to choose from, like the ones one can download and put in the skins folder. This package changed the default skins, iow, the ones the planes are wearing as default.

Ah, okay. I thought I should have seen extra skins, not just the default ones. And yes the new default skins do look great, I simply thought there would be a few I didn't recognize.

Thank you for the quick response. And I'm seeing your name on some of the mods I'm using right now and I'd like to thank you for those as well.  Great stuff. 8)

Just a reminder... Do NOT download Part 6 (sasup_fbdsm_06.7z) if you have UP3 or DBW. The current version of Part 6 is not compatible with DBW/UP3 and will mess up your default Zero skins.

Edit: Part 6 (for the old vanilla IL2 models) has now been moved to its own thread.

I'm running a vanilla install of DBW 1.71.  Should I/Can I install the FBDSM packages?  Does that make any sense at all or are these skins already part of the DBW package.  Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I haven't seen a definitive answer on this.  :-[

EDIT: put them in the main folder and it runs fine.

With DBW + FULL MONTY, do we need to install FBDSM?

I need some help getting the various skin packages to work - I'm running DBW 1.71 and have the entries in the .rc file but DBW uses default skins. DISREGARD - verified packs do work but second question is relevant.
I do not have the 4.09m skin pack installed, so question is can I do this within the DBW 1.71 or am I looking at another installation dance?

Thanks in advance,
Duke

From time to time I like a new look&feel while starting the engines. Am I the only one who would be pleased having a new version of this great pack? If no we "just" have to look for someone who is able and has the time free to create a FBDSM-update.
