Title: [MOD] Hawaiian Islands repaint by Whitecat - Download now v1.1
Post by: WhiteCat on November 08, 2010, 03:07:46 PM
Hi, this is the last mod of The Pacific for now (and I suspect the last mod for a long time) :)

I must say that the original by Porto72 and Saburo Sakai is an amazing map. Not only very accurate in terms of geography and allocation of textures, but also in terms of objects, they are placed so well matching with the textures that I couldn't be very creative with cities and agriculture, so I decided to change in the end only the color of them. It was a map created with love so I tried to repaint it with love also. It has been both a challenge and a great experience to repaint this map, hope you enjoy it and that you don't find too many defects :)

Note: there were requests for adding smoke to the volcanoes but I couldn't in the end, to be honest I don't know very well how because I couldn't open the original actors.static in modded mode. But they could be added in a mission. Feel free to post that, and many screenshots with Sabres also ;)

Porto72-Saburo Sakai Hawaiian Islands repainted by Whitecat 1.1

Credits:

- Oleg & team of course
- Special thanks to Porto72 and Saburo Sakai this amazing map, very few are populated with so much detail as this one.
- Thanks also to SAS-Bombsaway for the support and for showing me Genetica for the lava textures.
- Thanks to Mixx for his textures, some of them have been the base for the textures in this map.
- Thanks to Avala for his beach, I modified the color but used the texture.
- Please excuse me if I forget anyone else, it's completely unintentional.

Instructions to install:

- Delete previous folders of 00_whc_Retextured_Hawaiian_Islands
- Copy the folder 00_whc_Retextured_Hawaiian_Islands_v1.1 into MODS folder.
- Add the lines in add_to_all_ini.txt to your MODS/Mapmods/maps/all.ini

If you want to use the missions you have already in these maps you have to change the 2nd line
of each .mis file from

MAP tc_hawaain-islands/load.ini

to:

MAP tc_hawaain-islands/whc_load.ini

Enjoy!

Is this the stock or the Saburo Sakai one from AAS?

See here for more info http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=126&t=21776&p=339665#p339665

I remember Redko talking about this map (if it is Saburo Sakai) and he said he didn't think he could improve it much. That and it is a big map. BTW I contacted Le0ne and he is settingup some QMBs for it :)

Looks nice though :)

Even a stock repaint would help.

Cheers

Thomas

I think it is the stock map IIRC. ;)

The other one is a big and very artful "monster".

To answer your question. If you really want to know how Hawaii looks like I think SAS1946 should buy you a ticket to fly over the island.  ;D
But seriously, every single photo you find on the internet will have a different look. Even unedited tourist images at Flickr.com, Imageshack or Photobucket will all be different as we don't know the settings of every individual digital camera. Another thing is that besides this the time of day and season will influence colours of the photos. And pictures taken from ground will look different than taken from a plane. In my opinion the mountains look a bit too bright, yellowish green in your screenshot. I would prefer a bit cooler to the blue side. As seen from the air vegetation will look a bit more blueish because of the air density.
Something similar Redko did with his Okinawa and Japan map.
But it's all up to you of course.  ;)

It's the Saburo Sakai one. Well, if Redko is not interested in the map, good, so we don't overlap work :) The fact that it's a big map is only an issue if you want to change coastlines, cities, airfields (thing I tend to avoid so we don't have problems with existing missions, and I can give you two or three examples of repainted maps over which you can't play Philk's wonderful populated missions, thing that annoys me so much being an offline player) or if you want to change the distribution of the textures of the map.

Now, it's true I see no reason to change either cities, airfields or coastlines for this map, it's really good on that, and pretty good on distribution of textures. For the textures itself, well, I'll give it a go and we'll see the results :)

Nobody stops us to reuse the textures for this one in the stock map when it's finished :)

The ticket thing would be great, I really DO need holidays :D

Regarding the bright color or not, it goes by days, but take a look for example to this captures from a BBC documentary I was watching this evening, it's Hawaii:

Anyway, my taste is more colorful than Redko's, we have had conversations on that since my first Kyushu's repaint which inspired him to start repainting. My opinion it's to be more colorful and let the IL2 engine to do the job with hazy weather for example. And I've focused always more on having better experience from low altitude rather than high altitude, something Redko has started to do in desert maps, in the previous maps he focused in the opposite.

But don't worry, I'll publish sooner or later my new version of Kyushu and Okinawa so you can decide :)

Looking forward to this one  :) i beleive the original Hawaii is one of the few stock maps that has not received much love, i never tried the Saburo Sakai version due to a seeming lack of missions/campaigns/qmb's but am looking forward to try your re-juvinated version!
I really feel that a full set of QMB missions for a new map is a  vital part of the release  ;D

Thanks for your continued work on the Pacific theatre

I tried that exact one but I wanted to get the red color a little more believable. Maybe with your photoshop you can get it to look real. :) Also, setting it a correct size was difficult for me as well.  There are a lot more cool volcanic textures in that program.
Cheers. :)

here's a good example of what a lava flow looks like from the air.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gakout/2084514795/

It's much more orange than just straight red, with darker, cooling areas in the middle of the flow.

Excellent work so far by the way. Way back when on AAA, I had started trying to redo the Hawaii map using a slightly modified stock map with completely rebuilt object placement. I know a few others tried after I lost interest in finishing the project. I was never quite happy with some of the limitations in trying to build an accurate Hawaii with the limitations of the engine. Some better, more appropriate textures than what I had to work with will go a long way though.

Keep up the great work!

The chicks are so hot!! (hope my girlfriend doesn't check this forum :p) and Tom Selleck picture killed me :D

Seriously, we are going to have a texture similar to the coast in the pic 1, and I'm going to try to add black beaches, white beaches and specially the sort of 'wall' texture in pics 5, 9, 11, hopefully. Hawaii is so varied I'll fill all slots for sure, possibly reducing agriculture ones. Guaranteeing all of them blend more or less of course. And the volcanic part is key also. I tested last night in the dark and the lava sort of glows at night :)

Me neither mate :) I'd like to have good shallows on this one, textured by you, possibly not very big without covering the sea of foam though. Like in the Slot map (even if the shallows in the Slot show in the rivers if I remember well)

Well I'm going to focus on terrain for the moment while someone comes to save us on the shallows stuff :D

Before I discovered Saburo's Hawaii map, I was looking into doing the chain of islands myself.

During some of my research I discovered something interesting: most all the islands have nice vegetation, and geographic formations abundant- the exception seems to be the little island of Kaho’olawe. Saburo did okay I thought in texturing this island, it shows more as barren although the texture looks a tad too brown to me. Kaho’olawe was turned into a weapons range after Pearl Harbor and is a nice distance from the other islands so as to add some geographic realism.

Here were some of my resources when it came to Kaho’olawe island, which was one of my main motivations for even trying to make a map.

Kaho’olawe, Hawaii
http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/north_america/hawaii/kahoolawe.html

Operation Sailor Hat (interesting testing done on the island- some cool pix)

Hope that might help-- looking forward to the result!

Hi Whitecat- found this under tourism http://www.hawaiilogue.com/active-volcanoes-in-hawaii.html

Not sure if they were like that in the 1940's tho.

Hey it might be nice to add a smoke objects into the map were the active volcanoes are :)

The lava flows look really interesting!

Tnx mate :) I've looked in wikipedia now and both Kilauea and Mauna Loa have been pretty active intermittently across the 20th century so I think makes sense to make them active in the map.

Besides in the case of Hawaii, it's not only a map for Pearl Harbour, it can be for example the initial mission of any campaign training on new aircraft in the navy in the 1950s, 1960s, etc :) nowadays with these marvelous mods like 1956 one can't assure we do maps for the 1940s anymore :D

Re the smoke objects certainly I've thought about it, I haven't tested yet but I sort of remember reading somewhere that you can't save smoke objects in the actors.static. No worries though, in that case I'll deliver a mission template only with smokes. Again, as few objects as possible, I think it's better to leave that to mission builders to avoid conflicts :)

Or of course just for the heck of fun have a mission just flying a Tiger Moth photographing Kilauea eruptions in the 1940s for National Geographic or Paris Match!! :D

I found this image I already had online where I populated The Target Island with targets.

Note the brownish texture: maybe more red to indicate its volcanic nature?

Yeah no worries, that texture is a stock one from MTO map. I'm changing all of them, I appreciate Saburo's effort though. The Map_T needs some small changes but not too many really, there has been an effort in the map to be accurate and the only thing that really needs (IMHO) is more exotic and less european textures :)

Maybe even the hue is more inline with Viking's original Grand Canyon map? Not the texture itself, but colour?

I think one of the Agracier's textures for Spain is gonna be good candidate for that island but I have to check also that all the textures blend together well, wherever that texture is present elsewhere in the map. You know, I've discovered some interesting behaviors in Il2 render engine, it's not only that similar textures in color mix better, actually the render engine (at least the Open GL) renders the borders differently if the textures are inside a certain threshold of similarity...

Hope not being very obscure, anyway leave it to me mate :)

If textures don't blend very well there are several tutorials/tips/tricks here to make them blend nicely in an easy way.

http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9348.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9348.0.html)

Your volcano reminds of a way in FMB how to simulate a working volcano.
You can find it here, I tried it out, it works, but need some tweaking I think.

And I thought this one was with a bomb/artillery explosion in it. Working textures sound almost like science fiction! :o :) Great!..

it is amazing how different those 8 islands look from aboce, whole lot of variety in vegetation and topography +land's and coasts charakter.

If textures don't blend very well there are several tutorials/tips/tricks here to make them blend nicely in an easy way.

http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9348.0.html (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9348.0.html)

Your volcano reminds of a way in FMB how to simulate a working volcano.
You can find it here, I tried it out, it works, but need some tweaking I think.
Mission here:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/50910533/m/2231096514 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/50910533/m/2231096514)

And looks like this:

Cheers pal, it's nice :) But Iwo wasn't as active as Hawaii during the attack right? I think the smoke coming from the crater in some campaigns like Philk's is more due to burning subterranean japanese defenses

Thanks a lot, I didn't know that tutorial but I was using already that sort of tricks in Photoshop and 2 or 3 more I'll share when I have time :)

And I thought this one was with a bomb/artillery explosion in it. Working textures sound almost like science fiction! :o :) Great!..

it is amazing how different those 8 islands look from aboce, whole lot of variety in vegetation and topography +land's and coasts charakter.

Uufflake example is using fire and smoke objects really, but combining that with lava textures will be nice :)

Thanks for the pictures

Testing different forest ground and mountains, still not definitive textures but getting there:

Textures look great, but some things to keep in mind.

1) Sometimes commercial pictures will have unusually intense blues and greens due to the use of filters and/or photo editing tricks. I think that your textures strike a good balance between the "too yellow" textures of many of the stock maps and the "too green" appearance of a tourist postcard.

2) Volcanoes have altered the coastline of Hawaiian islands (especially Hawaii) over the last 60 years. Don't use modern aerial photographs when placing your lava flows!

No, they aren't fire and smoke objects. It's an old mission (2006) I found at Ubisoft and when you install that mission you will see they are exploding Pe-2's.
The link to that mission is in my comment on the previous page.
The funny thing is that sometimes you see them popping out of the volcanoe.   ;D

But looks nice though...

Thanks! I'm not changing too much the map_T, which says where are the different textures. I'm changing it a little but not too much, otherwise would be a huge task. But I'm playing carefully with the textures so they look as better as possible. Many of them will be completely new.

Some updates, I've been some weeks really swamped with work.

Mauna Loa is doing nicely, you'll notice I've eliminated for the moment red lava, I'm going to limit it to very specific spots, otherwise the map has too much of it. Those spots will look very nice, but I can't cover all the island of red lava :)

Yep I'm focusing on the textures. As you know we can't change the map_T of this map with your 'brush' technique, is too big and gives memory errors when opened (at least for me) :) but I'm using other tricks to change it, but not massively :)

continue in the same direction!
The main base of the fleet and airfields have turned out very nicely.

Mountains / volcanoes look unnatural. Perhaps a little fix map_h.tga and map_T.tga

Thanks Mixx! :) The base and the airfields aren't mine though, they are the original ones, I'm only changing the textures.

Regarding the unnatural mountains, do you mean the 'spikes'? Not sure how to change the map_h.tga without ruining all the map, I haven't done so yet. And the map_T.tga I'm basically keeping the original one with very small changes, otherwise this would be a very long project. It's not possible to change the map directly in FMB because memory problems at least in my PC but I'm changing some pixels in the map_T.tga directly but only if it's absolutely necessary (if it looks really wrong otherwise). But if you have any ideas or a way to change it, your help is very welcome!

Thanks

Hi guys, I found this:

It means that we have to choose between eruption in Mauna Loa or in Kilauea, depending on the period we are if we are purists :) (40's and 50's Mauna Loa, 60's and 70's Kilauea)

Do you want one, another, both? 2 maps? Shouldn't I be so purist given that anyway the map is far from perfect? :)

Hehe I found the solution to edit the map_T :D and it comes just in time as now I wanted to do some tweakings. But if you can help with the map_H would be useful anyway. I've checked though and the mountains are correct, Hawaii has very abrupt mountains, check photos. They don't seem 'natural' because there aren't so many places in the world with so abrupt mountains (no wonder, they are quite young volcanic islands; I've seen the same thing in La Palma, Canary Islands) The shape of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea aren't so correct but again that should be done changing the map_H

Ok, anyone interested in doing shallows or shall I deliver as it is?

Thinking in 'retire' from modding very soon so I think is time to wrap up and deliver this and other maps. Will come also Korea, Palau, Okinawa and Kyushu, and in a package some minor others. Vietnam I'll handle it to Mission Bug as it is still his WIP map, so he can do with it whatever he likes.

Really nice there Whitecat. Craters are cool looking too.

I remember looking into the skinning of Diamond Head as that is hardly recognizable in the stock map and seeing where doing a nice job would be difficult. That and what time of year does one depict (as to if it is green or brownish)? Needless to say I appreciate some of the choices you face, and it looks like it is coming along very nicely indeed :)

Thanks!

Well, it looks great but I have some problems with it. I couldn't save missions so I checked it with static.ini checker. Here is what I miss:

- from actors.static:
buildings.House$FordIslandTower
buildings.House$Human_09D

-from actors_t.static:
buildings.Mountain$whc_Suribachi_Inv_Post

Here comes the question: where can I find those objects?

EDIT: Ok, I found FordIslandTower but i can't find the rest. Any ideas?

EDIT2: Ok, I found Homan_09D as well, now, where can I find whc_Suribachi_Inv_Post?

the Human object comes from one of the infantry mods, can't remember which right now, will check for you.
but, it irks me! why do some mapmakers go and put an object like a human figure in the map?
it's just silly, and really not needed at all...that's what regular FMB is for, but hey, that's just my thoughts on that.... ::)
and mati, what on earth is the actors_t.static.....i'm pretty sure the map isn't reading that, although the static checker might, so i wouldn't worry about that right now. we need to find your missing human first.... ;)

All you fellows need is in the first post there at AAS, just follow the instruction notes and read the readme,
3-4 mods required IIRC:

http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=126&t=21776

After downloading the map and the objectspack and installing one additional mod (link included in readme) the map was good to go. You will need a.o. the new tarmac plates.

Hope that helped..

mati, you need to remember, if d/l'ing a retextured map without having the original, it stands to reason that you'll need the objects that were used for the original map.
WhiteCat has only changed textures, not objects, so you would need to look for the original d/l map, and the objects that it needed.  ;)

I can pm it if it isn't available anymore:

"Infantry MOD", "Mod DLV_Infantry", "MOD TElmo", "Objects Map", along with the static ini changes presented in the objects pack are needed.
IIRC, the only other additional mod was Cal tarmac plates. If this is hard to get, I'm sure I also have it in my modstore folder. I recall all mods available at the post linked above Malone's post and the Tarmac plates being the only one I had to find seperately (already had it in my modstore folder).

Please ignore the actors_t.static, it was a test and stayed there by mistake. Really is the actors.static of my Iwo Jima repaint. It doesn't do any harm, remember that everything in the map is controlled by the load.ini so if there's anything not called by the load.ini you can delete it.

LOL :D That's because this repaint is about the map of Saburo Sakai and Porto72, and NOT the stock map. The dimensions of this map are different, so you can't use stock missions or campaigns made for stock Hawaii map.
Another different thing would be to repaint the stock Hawaii map using the textures from this one... maybe if I have time some day :)

Ya I figured as much, just thought it was funny so I posted it up.
So are there any campaigns you know of that are compatible with this map, or is it more for use in the FMB?

There's a nice Pearl Harbour mission made by fabianfred I think, you can get the link in the original thread of this map in AAS site I think. But hope you have a good PC, there are MANY planes in that mission :D

This map is a lot more interisting than the stock map IHMO. All islands, many authentic objects and lots of airfields at Oahu. Brings my PC at its limit at times, but the beauty combined with the huge size (flying from Hawaii all the way to Nihue takes some time. ;D) makes a nice simming experience.

I modified my load.ini (after backing up) with an alternate water color, if someone is interested I can load that up with WhiteCat's permission. As usually in that map, I used CzechTexan's Puerto Rico map's  with his lighter blue water colors. Maybe a bit too light blue in this case.

TBH I like both ways, WhiteCat's water and the 'frankenized' version. I can post a screeny if required.

Hi White Cat!

The following objects appear to be missing from my static.ini file and i can't save misions with your map:

buildings.House$FordIslandTower
buildings.House$Human_09D

Could you please indicate which objects mod(s) are these from?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Whitecat,

I tested the new textures as soon as I could spent some time and I am asolutely satisfied with the results. The different textures are harmonised and they dont look cartoonish anymore. The representation of the vulcanic islands in terms of colours has turned out well.
I would say, that this should be the new standard for our hawaiian islands map. Perhaps it would be a good idea to simplify the install procedures by offering only one installation file (with the new textures).

Good job Whitecat,

Porto72

For problems a lava colours and other things i will "defend" a litte Whitecat's work. Never forget guys that IL2 is really a shit in terms of how it deal with colours. It's very, very, very hard to get something photorealistic.

And there is always the same problem, the lack of textures slots. With texture slots we could do much better maps and bring an incredible veriety to the landscapes. I can speak with exprience here at least for that point. I know zipo about java classes, so i can't speak about FX or 3d modeling, or FM for planes, but textures....i know. I'm maybe the only guy here, with certainly Agracier, Mixx and Viking to create a set of textures for each map.

You did a good work for this map Whitecate. I wouldn't have done it in the same way but it's fun to see that people can produce different things with a same subject. Many thanks man.

Thanks for the kind words. I may not use totally original textures in my maps (and in some of my maps I do, not to talk about me being one of the few people here who uses their own forest textures) but I make a very good effort in mix different textures, in making them look seamless, and change carefully their colours to make them mix more naturally. One can spend days in selecting selecting textures in Google Earth and more time in changing the map_T and then ruin everything because he didn't spend 30 min in eliminate the seams of the textures or because the woods at long distance don't match well with the fields or the mountains to give only 2 examples :) just my two cents about texturing ;)

Thank You.

You most likely can not save a .mis file
It is usually because of missing objects

Objects that are on the map,but you do not have them installed in your game

After I build a mission in FMB, I select "Play" and nothing happens.?

There is a object pack for DL on the AAA site - I will try that to see if that fixes it.

Update: The "Object Pack" worked and the map is working now. Wow - What an Incredible Map!

The canned mission is on the default map.... this new map covers more ground and includes all the islands so you cannot simply change the map name in the mission file.

The images you showed on page 1 made me realize we don't have the right forest textures.
It should have been covered more with foliage trees so you can hardly see the soil.

So I'm working now on some dense wood/jungle textures.
It is all still WIP but it looks like this on your map at the moment.

That should come with your download of Whitecat's map repaint.

I think it is also useful to install the original map as basis, it includes another tex folder called "p72".

Not sure here TBH. I got that map running in my latest Modact install, for some reason I can't get it loaded
in my Histomod installs. Both installs use UP~Boomer'S objectpack, that covers pretty much everything.

I used the 5 layer woods textures to create a dense jungle forest.
As far as I know all forests in IL2 do have the same kind of cone shaped trees with open space around which makes it look very organized.
But as you know the jungle is much denser, chaotic and branches grow in all directions.
So this what I basically did with the 5 slices of woods textures: on the left a typical IL2 cone shaped tree and on the right side my 5 slices to suggest a (sub)tropical foliage tree .

When finished I can post a d/l link if you like. 'Cause the forestfar.tga colour needs to be adjusted a bit too since I changed the jungle colour.  ;)
I redid the random tree files also so now they look denser and colour matches the woods.

Hi Uufflakke,

When i first started messing about with il-2 files i tried to devise a way of having more than one water texture so we could create reefs, using the woods tile and its 5 layers was one of the options i explored, we know that a woods tile can go on a water tile, quite often we see trees in rivers and off the coast. I had thoughts of trying to enlarge all the woods layers to the same size and trying to make each layer a different texture before compressing them and making the top layer an actual water layer........even now its beyond me but you seem to know what you're doing here have you any thoughts on this? maybe if something like this could be done?

Maybe we could replace the woods with a lot of auto generated trees.
Or maybe a lot of trees at the border of the woods.
Something like this mod by Stuka_40:
http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=126&t=27580&hilit=trees
But more dense trees.

@Blumax: I've read your comment over and over but don't know what you mean. The woods textures are one on top of the other with a maximum of 5 layers.
So don't know why you should lay them on top of, or better said, floating above water to suggest reefs?

Anyway, the only thing I did is creating a new set of .tga's for a dense jungle.

@Santobr: I remember that mod by Stuka_40 but you can not get a dense forest that way and in my opinion it does have an impact on framerate. Not to mention the annoying effect of trees popping up in the distance (which also happens in Clifs of Dover again according the clips I've seen.)

By the way, theoretically it is possible to create something like fields of flowers above groundlevel by using the Woods0 texture for that and leaving the others transparent. When you fly low over it you must have a kind of 3D effect.
(I will try that out another time but I think we are getting off topic now...  ;))

I see :) for one moment I thought it was another 'I give up IL2 trees, lets make simple textures forests'

Looks promising, I haven't arrived to that point of creating new trees layers, I only have recolored Italy forests and in some occasion I believe I've rotated 90 degrees some textures for example wood 2 and wood 4 leaving the others normal. That generates some chaos as you mention.

But: I find really difficult to find a combination that doesn't give a pattern at med-high altitude, and even if your last close up is very nice, the first one, being the colors lush and nice, shows some pattern (sorry if I'm too picky, and I'm conscious it's still WIP). And the problem with tree textures, as far as I know, is that you can't play with -2,-4, etc with helps in ground textures to minimize patterns. I find that most of the tree textures that have some 'personality' tend to show patterns (example stock pacific Jungle forest), and in other maps what you find is no patterns but too much 'uniform' or forest with 'blanket' effect, specially some winter maps I've seen around (the forest more than a forest from the distance seems too much a brown flat blanket)

That's why for the moment I've stuck to Italy forests (or recoloring of them)

Another trick to minimize patterns I try to use now and then is to use a quite clear layer of trees and then underlying, some ground texture not very plain which breaks a bit the patterns of the trees. But if the trees are too dense or the pattern is too evident, no matter how diverse is the forest ground, they tend to create 'lines'  vertical and horizontal towards the horizon.

Difficult :) but I suspect if you can't make it nobody will, mate :)

I think what Blumax means is that would be nice if we can make that the tree layers go downwards into the water instead of upwards. That would be super cool and MUST be somewhere :) Besides that would imply that you can fly over the water without crashing. Could have even more possibilities like (finally :) ) PROPER rice fields, bogs and marshes :) even if the 'mangroves' with normal trees over water, in some maps, look very nice.

@SantoBr: I've explored already that but I completely agree with Uufflake: bad framerates, and specially annoying popups. I don't want a map that looks nice 20 meters in front of my plane when I fly low, if 10 meters farther there's a line of popup trees that reminds me every second that I'm in a game in my living room and not over the Vietnam Jungle in 1970 :)

@Uuflake about flowers: NICE :) but deadly :P... the transparent trees still are there right? so you clash with them when you want to cut the roses with your propeller...

I gave it a quick test  and the effect is better than expected. When you fly low (tree top level) the layer of yellow flowers gives a kind of depth to it. Even better noticable when flying with no cockpit view.
And the propeller didn't become a daisy cutter. I could fly below treetop level but crashed when I approached the flowers texture. Well, I think...

Hard to see on a screenshot the depth effect, but it gives the landscape a nice touch anyway. Maybe an idea for mapmakers to suggest fields of sunflowers, wheatfields or whatever?  ;)

Hi, Uufflakke. For almost any parts I have zero clue about what is been talked about when
technical details of building textures etc are mentioned. But there's one interisting fact I'd like to mention here.

With an ex WIP Histomod version that became my favourite install, the name when released was Histomod V2.1 (WIP) IIRC..with that one I can fly over and through trees and forests anywhere without exploding. I assumed it was abandoned due to almost impossible circumstances regarding planes exploding. the only way to archieve that was directly hitting a building or mountain. Otherwise the plane would have crashed but not exploded.

Buildings, mountains etc of course were still lethal. It must have had something like a new/alternative destruction code-TBH it's the most fun to fly low and fast in this install, because-as in RL-not every tree must be lethal (albeit in RL a tree confrontation would at least lead to heavy damage.) The result is that flying even lower becomes fun-flying through forest tops looks also quite cool lol.
I remember an F-16 vid where the pilot forgot readjusting his HUD before takeoff and busted a treeline, damaging the engine. In normal IL-2 conditions, he would have exploded. Not so in with that Histo code. :D

The second cool effect is that even when the plane is structurally damaged you have a chance of ejecting or (quite superman-styled) surviving in the plane. I believe it was a WIP error that IMHO had the coolest of all side effects.
Maybe interisting, I think flowers really should not cause a crash. :)

I could post a screen of a flight over forest tops. ..really fun!
Sorry for off topic.

Make sure to install it correctly as presented in above's link, I made the dumbass mistake to place the single parent folders in my Mod folder.
For the Hawaiian Islands repaint, you may also in addition need the "p72" folder from the original map by porto72 and Saburo Sakai:

I uploaded it, hope that was okey, otherwise I'll delete it.

http://www.mediafire.com/?d9hzwzz0ixrc8b9

...it goes in your
C:...IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS\Maps\_tex folder
or your

C:\..\...\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Files\maps\_Tex folder:

Here's the link to the original map, the objects are not needed with UP~Boomer's pack:

Please backup!

I can also upload a version where I added some sand at Honolulu (screens) and here and there, at Kaena Point to Pipeline.

Man, I wish that map had waves, it would so rock.

Wow, the reply was -fast- ;D ...
OK that is only because master farang asked me for the template in case he needs it one day and so I uploaded it.
It's fun, but just see it as "looks alike", not looks like. Modern Hawaii /Oahu looks so completely different that it would require a complete madman doing "a one year job" on that map. However, skyscapers only seem to occour at Honolulu.

Cheers

Is it just me or do the links for the original map over at AAS not work?  http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=126&t=21776

That might be, but you don't need the original map for this repaint.
You only need what is in this thread plus find the file named P72 for your tex folder which contains an airfield texture AFAIK. That file is also in this thread, either in the first 2-3 pages or here towards the end, IIRC I uploaded it.

Cheers, if you have issues I can help.
PS: The original map is part of this map since if you look at the load.inis inside the map folder, you find the original with the original textures as well.

PS: if you need some of the now stock objects, that is another thing. In DBW or my favourite version HistoMod or the latest HSFX(?), you have all the objects as part of the packs nowadays as SFS files, but if you run another sort of install, you might want to ask in the Tech help section.
Hope that hepls.

Is it just me who keeps having the issue with quite a few maps showing up in FMB, but then going to save and entering the name, then going to exit and it says would you like to save file until you press no? Any help Cat?  :-\

It means you are missing an object or several objects on your install that is listed in the static.ini of a map.
Which version are you running? V4.09?
I would suggest to make another install like DBW 1.71 which has all objects included (except the latest releases like Uzin's map of Belarus  or Lynx23's Svalbard map.)
Saves a lot of hassle.  ;)

SilverFox23:
There are also two other points of consideration, one for saving a mission or loading the map, one for game load:

There is a folder (I posted it on page 11 with other links) named p72 which belonged to the _Tex folder and which was relevant for this map.
I just tried without it and it worked, but it was DBW and in my Histo installs I also have a version of Boomer's object pack, so not sure on this.

I really can second Uufflakke's tip, for loading maps one of the bigger modpacks is really neat.

Another point: I recognized that I get lots of loading troubles since using Tiger's latest great soundmod.
E.g. I tried a couple of minutes ago with this very map and only after resetting to 256MB load RAM for the exe I could play in this map, usually with DBW all maps except one or two loaded with the 512 MB RAM allocation on my rig/PC.

Also I made sure the Tiger sound mod loaded at last place in my JSGME list this time, previously I had it selected before the new Gear Shake mod (named #__00_GearShakeMod) and crashed while trying to load this map.

~S~ All
Is this map compatible with HSFX 6.0.12? I dl the map and installed it and when I go to FMB the map will come up.
However when I save the mission it doesn't save it. It will save the _ru, but the mission it self. I hope there is a work
around for this, however not were I have to dl tons of add on objects.

Thank You for any help or suggestions.

OK let me start over and say that it is rude to ask "WHY" for any reason when someone is trying to help you, an example "Dont feed the Alligators" "WHY", WTF.

To answer your "WHY"  Its because what ever game you play we/I could tell you where to stick your  "Where do I get this Mapmods/maps/all.ini for this?" question.

Open your Files Folder and you will see a Maps folder, there is where you put it. "Your Welcome Mr WHY" :)

I followed the steps and the map is gorgeous! :D

However, this map doesn't come with any .mis files, along with the fact that everytime I make a mission on this map, it doesn't save. ^^;

Ok, Victor you need to get the Static.ini from DBW, if you can and it will probably save for you after.

I'm pretty sure that some objects are missing:
use the "Universal static.ini checker" to find out wich objects.
Get it here:

Oh and Victor you may need to get UP~Boomers 4 Objects .SFS Files to even run this map in HSFX. Go here:   http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,30853.msg326279.html#msg326279

There is a direct link to download just the 4 .SFS Files you need but I cant find it. Maybe someone here can provide that link for you.

hi victor, this information (version/type of install) is vital for anyone to give you the correct advice, as some versions use different methods.
hence, we need to know this before we can help.
whenever asking for help, of any sort, make it a habit to always provide this info, each and every time, so that we can help straight away without first having to ask what version you use.
as you become more familiar with modding, you will realise that this is important. for now, just take my word for it, and always provide this info when you are asking for an assist of any sort. ;)
