Title: [MOD] Iwo Jima repaint by Whitecat: Download now v2.2 - Fix
Post by: WhiteCat on October 29, 2010, 02:36:34 PM
Hi guys, finally I've decided to start to release map by map as the package it's going to be more long to finish than I expected :)

So, we start with Iwo Jima Pre, Invasion and Post!!, so begin to look for proper skins for the Zeros and Jills detached in Iwo for the defence of the island!!

This map as the rest of mine respects the original coasts, runways and heights, and keep the objects to a minimum, to try to keep perfect compatibility with previous existing campaigns over the original stock map, so mission builders don't have to change all the missions again. I only changed the position of some textures in some cases as Iwo but hopefully to improve the map.

The textures have been indexed to avoid problems of FPS but let me know if are there any issues.

Thanks and acknowledgements before I finish the package just in case I forgot anyone:

- First of all thanks to Oleg of course.
- Second, Mixx of course. Most of the textures in this map are variations or originals from Mixx.
- Cbal, who gave me the inspiration of retexturing the map. Initially the map_T was from Cbal, but I modified it heavily. Some of the textures come from him.
- Redko, another source of inspiration, and again some textures or variations come from him.
- PhilK for his amazing campaigns, another big source of inspiration. The position of Suribachi has been carefully selected to avoid problems with his Iwo campaign but let me know if there are any ugly effects. I only tested first mission to check position of AAA's, bunkers etc.
- All the rest of modders, mission builders and skinners community.

EDIT:

v2.0: What's new:

- 6 maps: 3 maps Pre Invasion, Invasion and Post Invasion optimized for Perfect mode, and the same 3 maps optimized for lower modes (Excellent and below). The Perfect mode maps are more loyal to the real geology of Iwo coast, but that provoked some ugly effect in Excellent mode, so the Excellent mode is a little bit less loyal, but now looks quite good. You will have to select different map according to the mode in which you are going to play.
- Apart from that now in the coast you'll notice less low green water and more foam and waves. This is Pacific but it's not Tahiti gentlemen, Iwo is rocky, windy and rainy.
- Different Suribachis for different maps. I figured out how to do it, it was there in front of my eyes
- In Iwo invasion you'll be able to bomb the island but you'll find a bit more bumpy to land (even if the effect is not as big as I expected because the island is quite flat)

EDIT:

v2.1: What's new:

Just some changes of names of textures to avoid any issue with other maps I'm releasing soon

EDIT:

v2.2: What's new:

Corrected minor bug in one of the load.ini's

Hi Whitecat, thanks for your work.

I've only tried the pre-invasion map so far. I've found that in both FMB and when overflying, the island shows intermittent, flat, rectangular areas along the beaches, which jut out into the sea. Is this some problem with textures?

Cheers.  :)

Hey, you're welcome :) I haven't seen that in my PC, could you post me a screenshot? Are you running in perfect mode? I forgot to mention it's a repaint only for perfect mode, not tested in other modes.

Cheers

That's where the problem is. I can't run perfect mode as my graphics card died on me some time ago. I'm running the game on the integrated chipset.

Thanks for your help mate. :)

Sorry about that guys, it's a pity you can't appreciate the map in perfect mode. I don't have a clue about how to fix that, and to be honest I haven't tested it in other modes rather than perfect mode. I'll take a look this weekend around in forums to see why it can happening and if there's an easy fix for that, unless someone  comes before with a solution.

Cheers :)

I get that effect sometimes on the extreme left hand edge of a map. I can't play in perfect mode either. It's got nothing to do with White Cat's re paint.

I've seen another effect in Excellent mode, probably related with this, it's like circles of squares sorrounding the point of view far away. Also my horizon in less than Perfect mode is really bad. I'm not sure if this happens with the rest of maps, I started to play in Perfect around 3 years ago and I have tweaked heavily the conf.ini and my card settings to favour the Perfect mode but that probably makes other modes worse, I don't know. I'll take a look the weekend :)

Good news pals, I feel like Tom Hanks in 'Apollo XIII' when he says on regaining control after the explosion 'Houston, we've had to learn to fly all over again but now we are doing better up here now' :)

I've had to learn to retexture again, non perfect modes have their own tricks, but I've figured out the problem so will publish patch soon :D ....I know the economy it's not exactly buoyant as to think in buying a new graphics card!

Thanks Mixx, I'm glad you liked what I did with your textures :)

I applied your map_c but it doesn't fix the problem, the problem is not related with the coastline itself but how map_t is textured. Sometimes you get this effect in Excellent if you try to do very detailed coasts. I fixed it changing the map_t.

Thanks again anyway! :D

Hi mate, this is a screenshot showing the fix:

There's still another issue I see in excellent mode, marked in red. It's like concentric circles, it moves when you move, is something related with the way the light reflects in the water, I think. Can you confirm if you see the same effect? If not, can you send me your conf.ini so I compare it with mine? I think mine is optimized to Perfect mode and that's why I see that.

Cheers :)

This is the readme of next release: instead of launching another map I decided to finish this up with some improvements, before you guys finish to play your Iwo campaigns :D (by the way, is there around any good Pre Invasion campaign? There were some missions in the stock installation of Il2 1946 but not very populated...)

Iwo Jima repaint by Whitecat v2.0:

I figured out how to do it, it was there in front of my eyes :)

- In Iwo invasion you'll be able to bomb the island but you won't be able to land or take off in the airfields without great bumping and risk of crashing your aircraft... the bulldozers can't work under cross fire and the craters are still there :)

Hi mate, sorry for the delay.

Just had a quick tootle around the pre-invasion island. I couldn't see the bugs in your pic. However, as the coastline bugs are intermittent, often depending on the angle of view or zoom level, it may be the same with the sea. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks again.  :)

No worries, that's solved. It was a conf.ini setting I had, which is better for Perfect mode but not for Excellent. Now it looks perfect, I'm finishing now the Suribachis and the deletion of the Invasion runway points :)

Hi mates!

Just a little advise about the visibility distance?

If I increase the [Layer0] VisibleDistanceFar from 10000 to 20000 for example it make the object visible from a further distance or it is anyway related to the visibility distance of the conf.ini?

Thanks in advance!

i haven't tested it too much, but it does increase the distance from which you can see it, whether it will ultimately be controlled by the conf settings, i have no idea... :P

I'll try to test something on conf.ini as soon as possible!

Can you or someone confirm that the max value is 3 or can be set some higher value?

Thanks Malone but it seems the game engine limits the max. viewdistance from 3d objects.
I try VisibleDistanceFar 64000000.0 but suribachi still pop up at ~20 km.

Yes, I saw something strange at long distances but my configuration was a mess. I have to test what you say above guys and I'll give you feedback. The Suribachi object has different textures, apparently to use at different distances. I have to check, I'll get back to you guys if I find anything, thanks :)

well, in your Iwo maps, it doesn't display at all....i can be flying right over where it should be, but the land is flat, with no Suribachi to be seen anywhere....
it's a bit weird - like i said, my stock Iwo map has it, and if i use another Suribachi repaint it will appear changed in the stock map, but still no sight of it on yours.... :o
a screenie says it better:

Well it's not like that at all in my installation! The Suribachi is an object, is controlled by the actors.static And my Suribachi is a new object you have to add also to the static.ini Have you check that?

yes, i have a static Suribachi....but it's a horrible texture (almost black and white)...so i removed it.....the problem is this separate static object would replace only the stock map Suribachi...and still there would be nothing on your versions.... ???.....really weird.
here is my static entry, although the object i have is the ugly re-tex'd one, and if i remove the re-tex'd one, the stock map displays the one in the screenshot - so that one is obviously standard with UP....

Ok, follow the instructions in the readme then. You have to add 2 new Suribachis, I can't remember the names now but they were something like whc_suribachi_pre and whc_suribachi_inv. I created them to avoid the kind of problems you mention above. My map calls them in the actors.static. The inv one is less green and even has some craters on top. Please delete my previous iwo maps, download the last version and follow the readme :-)

A small error in v2.1:

whc_pre_load.ini.
[FIELDS]
 LowLand0 = whc/land/Pacific/mixx_TOP2.tga,2 => mixx_TOP2_IW.tga,2
 LowLand1 =
 LowLand2 =
 LowLand3 =

Hi, many thanks for pointing it out! :) I'll post a corrected version
