I probably should.

Beautiful. You are blessed with that.

Thumbs up for using a bicycle in the winter. How many kilometers is your ride to the office?
-
It's no big deal to go by bike in winter once you got used to it.
Below freezing point you have to choose your clothing carefully, anything else can be compensated by simply going faster ;)
In summer it doesn't look much worse either:
(https://www.sas1946.rocks/flickr/storebror/4628/39347323515_79a304dd40_c.jpg) (https://www.sas1946.rocks/flickr/storebror/4628/39347323515_57ea947057_o.jpg)

The trip is 12km one-way, about 30 minutes to go - 40 when I stop to take pictures ;)
If weather plays tricks on me, I also have the option to go along the main road which is just 7km, 20 minutes to go but shitty lanes and boring like hell, so I only choose that option when it's raining cats and dogs.
Cheers!

Very cool area.
Cycling is big part of my life. I'm using a 29er MTB in the winter and a trekking bicycle in the summer.
-
I've been cycling endlessly in my young days, but I wasn't sure whether it'd be as much fun for me nowadays anymore, so I took the cheapest bike I could get on the net to keep the loss small if I don't like it.
Turns out it's the same endless fun regardless my age.
My bike is an Ortler Monet (https://www.ortler-rad.at/produkt/ortler-monet-herren-schwarz-matt/), slightly customized with a Suntour seat post (https://www.amazon.de/SR-Suntour-Federsattelst%C3%BCtze-Feder-mittel-350mm/dp/B01HMXE8ZU/ref=pd_bxgy_200_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1E6B294ZQVZMFW01WY2Z) including neoprene protector (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001VO5GX0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1), Busch & Müller LED front light (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00G49RGJE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1), Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour Smart Guard (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001IHUC0W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1) bicycle tyres with Michelin Protek Max A3 (https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004U9MQCW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1) tubes, and last but not least one of the cheapest but most effective addons, a frontwheel mudflap (https://www.amazon.de/SKS-Spoiler-f-Radschutz-50-60mm/dp/B000X61O06/ref=pd_sbs_200_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=BJW0XVBTWAXG382M8PMV).

I got a very similar bike, its a Kellys Axis with Continental Travel Contact tires. The Schwalbe Marathon Plus are one of the most popular puncture resistant tires, a very good choice.
The 29er mtb I got is a GT Karakoram rebuilt with Deore XT level components and a Marzocchi Bomber front fork. I got both at bargain prices, the two cost me less than 1000 USD. I'm doing website management for a bicycle shop, so the repairs are free.
-
I am bout to buy me a bike and a bus card, I think I will choose a electric bike since I got quite a few hills to climb. In worst wintertime it is almost impossible to use bike here, some do, but traffic chaos as a result. After heavy snowfall I suggest bikers do not use bikes, but travel for free on busses until the snow is cleared. Your scenic route is impressive, I am afraid only by summer @i can use nature,
-
Real Bikers, I gifted my last bicycle to a poor Friend. That was 7 yrs ago.
My ongoing downgrade of eyesight makes it worser. I didn't feel safe enough in
traffic, can't calc properly speeds and distances on my eyesight no more.
I quit after 2x times nearly ending as a frontcooler.
Besides that I was quite a speedy cycler, no remorse.
So it didn't feel that bad.
My First ever bike I gave to my dad, he still has it.
Was a gift from my Grandpa.
A 1991 Western German touring Bike. Sachs 3-Gear, faster than
a race bike, if you had the muscles!!!
But this one was my absolute favourite, a Diamant Racing Alu Bike,
1980's?
Looked like this, except that I had the white original leatherstrips around
the bars and it's original white saddle. Drove like a feather.
I found it on the Sperrmüll in absolute impressive state.
A year later, some collector stole it sawing off a Streetsign where it was attached to.
-
Beautiful.
Would you let us know where this is if we promise not to all show up on that road all at once like a peloton of tourists?
For my bike ride I get the ocean along with a billion other people.. :(
-
I think I speak for Mike when I say “Over my dead body” :P
-
OR..as my own Big Brother would say: "I could tell ya, but then I'd have to kill ya..heh heh."
o_O
-
Another keen biker here :)
I keep riding my old faithful Nishiki 352 (http://www.nic.fi/~nallew/hellberg/www/hybrid352.html) throughout the year. During winter it is equipped with Schwalbe studded tyres. (https://www.schwalbe.com/en/spike-reader/winter.html)
Unfortunately my workplace is located in another town 60 km from my home (too much) and I work at home twice a week, but at least I get the chance to ride my bike to railway station and back three times a week. It's only 4 km one-way - but that is better than no biking at all - I guess I'm just too lazy to ride my bike just for fun in winter.
There is a risk in keeping a bike in a railway station. I keep it locked and chained and it has never been stolen - but once an unknown dishonest person stole the handlebar grips from my bike in broad daylight o_O
-
Certainly a lot more cycling than I do. Last time was in Korea in October 2016 on a designer touring bicycle. After a couple of KMs, I got used to the gears. Certainly a big change from 1982, and 10 speed bikes that seemed to have a puncture every five minutes.
-
Other than other things I am yet to touch, snow is one of the many I've been dying to touch and see in person. I wanna make snowballs and throw them at PvF. :P :))
-

Nice bikes VP :)
I chose the Schwalbe tyres after having suffered 2 punctures within one week.
The original tyres (Schwalbe too, but cheap ones) were okay for summer, but since road salt is forbidden for private use here, people use grit instead, and these chrushed gravels ruin your tyres within seconds if they don't have a sufficient protection.
After heavy snowfall I suggest bikers do not use bikes
Fully agree. Lucky me we don't have heavy snow fall here usually, it happens once every 5 years or so.
A 1991 Western German touring Bike. Sachs 3-Gear, faster than
a race bike, if you had the muscles!!!
I've had something similar in the early 80s. We've been proud of the 3-shift gear back then!
Later I've had a Peugeot bike with 5-shift derailleur gear, the first (and only) bike with aluminium frame in my youth. The bike was stolen after less than one year.
I've resorted to the cheaper steel frames then, with 18 and later 21 shift gears, but it's been cheap bikes all over.
Would you let us know where this is
The images a geo-tagged. If you download the original full size images, they come with the full set of EXIF data.

Other than other things I am yet to touch, snow is one of the many I've been dying to touch and see in person
...but what you saw here so far isn't snow. It's merely a cheap excuse of snow, a tiny white topping of frozen grounds.
Talk about snow again when Skylla is back from skiing ;)

Wow....I'm so envious of your commute :P
Me and Mrs Noakes are keen cyclists, and have been for decades :D
My present off roader is a Orange P7 hardtail
However, I've had dozens of 'bikes over the years....here's a few of the better ones....

As we both get older (57 & 58 o_O) we spend more time on this...pottering about the bridleways and back roads of Dorset , Wiltshire & Somerset
We also follow the racing on the television......
I'm more of a Northern Classics fan......https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris%E2%80%93Roubaix
The Strada Bianche is also stunning.......http://www.strade-bianche.it/en/
Mrs Noakes is more of a Grand Tour person, of the French, Italian and the Spanish, she likes the Spanish best.....
We find it very relaxing after a day's hard work to sit in front of a HD television, wine glass in hand ,watching the most GORGEOUS scenery scrolling past at 45 kph......the cycling's not bad either...... :))
Allez allez

Nice bikes Alfie, you got a good taste.
The snow situation here in Hungary is not very good, in the 80's knee deep snow was common but by now we only get ~4-5 cm and it quickly melts. Hence one can use a bicycle the whole year.
-
A few more impressions from today's bicycle ride to the office at -11°C, not quite winter wonderland, but as close as it gets in northern germany. Full size available on click.

Beautiful scenery, I really envy you. Unfortunately, I live in walking distance to my office, in the inner city of Budapest, so biking is not an attractive option for me. Instead, we're touring some 500 to 1000 km each year. Here are our bikes after the Murradweg down from the Alps. Mine (to the left) is a sort of oldtimer, a Csepel Marathón from the late 1980s, but with several parts replaced due to wear-off. If you're up to develop this thread into a 'Beautiful Sceneries Only Seen while Biking or Trekking' contest, I'd gladly contribute. :D

Sounds like I should take my DSR with me next time hehe 8)

a flashback from the 80s
FYI we call it the Millennium Falcon. 8)
-
Yep, you should feel blessed.
I cycle roughly 3,5km-s to school, and it takes 20 mins thanks to fookin traffic lights
All I see is asphalt and concrete. Also we bought a new bike, but It's harder to cycle than the previous one hehh.
But when I see a car accident or a traffic jam, I'm thankful to have a bike.
When summer and good weather comes, I'm gonna move out, and get used to the new bike. Haven't been speeding in a long time cause I got lazy :P
2 years ago I could overtake a motorbike, but now... Eh
Good to see others using bycicle as their primary 'vehicle'
Ps: Rickster, I can tell you that snow is freakin awesome. Especially fresh dust snow. I just love drifting and doing wheelslips in it. Also when you're wearing some really warm clothes and it's down to -20°C, you feel safe and immortal ;D
On the downside it's crappy when it bombs your eye constantly on the bike.
-
Ah A bike thread. Cool
I've been a bike mechanic/sales person for over 22 years. I've had a lot of different bikes. One thing I do miss about our present residence area is that we have little to no bike-lanes or dedicated paths for bikes. I have to share the narrow shouldered road with 50mph+ traffic if I want to commute into town. And then there's also this bridge..
My present bikes are..
1969 Honda C102 with a 125 cc XingLi engine replacing the tired, old 50cc OHV Honda engine. I presently ride this bike more than my pedal bikes because of the traffic.
Late 70's Austra-Daimler Vent Noir touring bike, Reynolds 531 full frame with newer Suntour 18 speed touring gearing, 700X28c wheels and clincher tires. Nice long distance bike, relatively flexible fork and relaxed frame angles, low bottom bracket means you have to watch pedaling through corners.
I like to tinker and made this engine assisted bike out of a 1980 Nishiki CitiSport commuter, an old 30 cc weedeater, 26X2.0 wheels and tires some junkyard bits and other pieces bolted and fitted. Does about 22 mph and gets about 190 mpg. It's legal for road use in Oregon because of an IC powered bicycle engine size restriction of 35 cc and <25 mph.
And a few years back I was riding this hand built recumbent.

Beautiful! I'm blessed with a similar view on my way to work, though I can't pluck up my courage and try riding my bike in winter months. I just can't. Even at times when roads seem innocent enough. So my envy for you is double :D

Sure. Why not? ...eh...those look like uncomfortable ruts to bike on. Is it eastern front mud...or just illusional from the photo? Do you navigate up on the hard ground and grass?

Here in Texas, that would be labeled "purdy". ;D

Its perfect Mike! I'd live there!

those look like uncomfortable ruts to bike on. Is it eastern front mud...
After all, it's just my choice. I can change the route whenever I like to, and when the weather is dry, I sometimes go "off road" a bit.
This particular image however is not from my daily route between home and office, it's a tad off.
I took it when I came back from a farmer nearby where I go every 3 days to get some milk "straight from the cow" :D
My daily route to/from office is mostly paved roads, most of them closed for public traffic, along the countryside.
This is a typical view, picture taken on my way to the office today:
(https://www.sas1946.rocks/flickr/storebror/1979/45264857511_a9d9b9bf58_c.jpg) (https://www.sas1946.rocks/flickr/storebror/1979/45264857511_5174824cb7_o.jpg)
No eastern mud, but no cars either. Just me, a couple of horses and cows in the meadow, and lots of fresh air.

We have a similar mist phenomenon here, which has given rise in the 16th century to the ghostly myth of the 'Lady of Naun'.
On the other side of the Piddle Brook from my house is Naunton Court, a 13thC moated manor house, in which a lady of the house was brutally murdered and entombed in the thick walls of the edifice. Some say she is restless spirit grieving the loss of the population of the abandoned village of Sheriff's Naunton adjacent, lost to the Black Death.
As the mist rises at sunset and flows across the field towards us a cowled and draped figure can be seen manifesting and drifting towards us in the village. I have witnessed this apparition myself many times.
Cause is temperature variation due to heat generation of rotting vegetation in the water meadow creating vertical swirling eddies methinks..........or is it? o_O

Well... there are scientists saying that the return of summer (and of the hot weather) may kill the virus ! Let's pray for it ! I will have 2 good reasons to love summer, this year : kill Covid-198 and... my Triumph !
(https://i.postimg.cc/k5zSMZtM/IMG-20170923-165522.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/R31hXgR2)
Can't wait !!!

Let's hope it, looks like fun....
Your goggles are Killer, stylish.
But I never enjoyed a shopping tour more than these days since Friday closed schools and
Babygartens (small human zoos) due to our strict communal quarantine regulations.
They have to stay at home and most of their accompanied Propeller Parents do the same.
Less people around.
Time to breath and just in time as Spring breaks.
Unusual for Male Humans, I have a tendency to do long shopping tours.
What I dislike there, cramped overcrowded stores, people stalking me, when I look around.
Yesterday I got me over to look for a new Belt, mine is overworn and I really found a
replacement. I'm happy with my new Belt.
This comes in time, as I have Holidays from work and time to beat.
Wishing you a nice Spring time, enjoy nature

Thanks for your words !
Euh... shopping ? these days, it becomes quite insane, with COVID-19 hysteria and peoples buying tons of toilet paper ! So ridiculous ! OK, epidemic, we must be prudent. No problem with it. We must push our governments to take action. But hysteria is nit necessary ! Personnally, I always say with actual events : afraid ? no. But angry, due to state's inaction !

It's been a while since I've posted pictures here.
The Covid-19 hype came upon all of us more or less, in my case I've been working in "home office" on 50% short-time work since mid of march.
I'm just about to return to the office in full time next week, so this seems to be the perfect time to share some pics of my frequent afternoon bicycle rides I've been enjoying in the meantime.
Friends of mine on Facebook have seen most of these pictures already as I've been updating them in realtime there, albeit in the usual reduced quality imposed by facebook.
Enjoy/skip/hate these, whatever you prefer...

... you should feel way more than "blessed", Mike, but I've got no word for it, even "ashamed" isn't close to it ...! 8)
-
Wow, I won't show these pics to Sophie, I presume the weather is not always that gorgeous, the grass is not always that green, cows are notoriously hostile, no Schnitzel or Most in Gaststüberln, and travelling to Schleswig with a bike through half Europe is no fun. Nonetheless, you're a f-----g lucky b-----d :D
-
Marvelous photo's Mike :P
It would be nice to have some of those clouds in IL 2 :D
Cheers

Mike,
You may not know this about me but I am an avid rail fan. Could you possibly disclose the location of the rail line to me? I really get a kick out of seeing narrow gauge spur lines.
Sincerely,
James

travelling to Schleswig with a bike through half Europe is no fun
Depends.
I've been doing about 50km per day since mid of march, on working days in the afternoon, when the weather was fine and I did not have other duties in the office.
That's like 60 out of 74 possible days, which fits the ~3000km according to my speedometer.
You'll finally get there and it'll be fun, but it takes time, especially if you want to take time to see things alongside the way like me.
It would be nice to have some of those clouds in IL 2 :D
A few of them gave me really good showers.
The nicer they look, the nastier they are.
Mind you: All these images are just crappy snapshots with my Samsung S10 smartphone.
If you want to see what real photographers make from some of these places... a colleague of my wife is a bit into photography and she's got a hang on "lost places", so I shared some of my findings with her.
These "lost places" guys seem to have strict ethics so I had to prepare a couple of things for her to enter the spots, but two of them she actually did revisit.
This was my visit:

Of course I can James.
I should be able to remember all spots depicted here.
The narrow track is a peat rail, it's located here: https://goo.gl/maps/1cWhebbahmj5rHKn8

Very nice pics ! And... I would love to use some of these places for some airsoft game !!! so much better than the gravel pits in which we are authorized to practice this activity in Switzerland...
-

Depends.
Exactly. I meant travelling with a bike, not on a bike, but never mind.
It depends very much on the terrain and on the wind.
With both neutral, 17 to 20 kms are comfortably doable per hour in average, and the limit is only your ass, how many hours per day can it have on the saddle?
It's all about our holy ass. :D
