Title: Water hammer
Post by: greybeard on December 03, 2018, 09:58:54 AM
Interesting comments about ship bombing: it looks that near-miss is much more lethal than direct hit! o_O

Bombs have to be a direct hit? (https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/bombs-have-to-be-a-direct-hit.50252/post-1444100)

...food for thoughts.

This is quite famous, the explosive gaz bubble is much more dangerous than the explosion itself:
Check here for instance:

It is the same for depth charges

Very impressive! Thanks for sharing.

I'd never heard of that. Always thought dept charges would have got their best effect by a direct hit, and exploded in the vicinity just because they were launched blindly.

This is one of the reasons that torpedoes have mostly become obsolete as anti-shipping weapons. (That, plus cost, targeting difficulties, and very narrow launch parameters.)

That said, the water hammer effect is most effective against lightly-built ships. Battleships and similar WW2-era capital vessels were less vulnerable to this effect due to heavy "torpedo belts" of armor and empty space around the sides of the hull.

Water hammer effects against submarines work best if the sub is at depth so natural water pressure compounds the explosive effects of the depth charge/bomb. Ideally, the blast overloads the sub's pressure hull, causing implosion, or at least holes its dive tanks making it impossible for the sub to blow ballast and resurface.

AFAIK, IL2's relatively crude ship models don't model any of these effects, although mods might have fixed this problem.

Thanks for details and explanation.

It's a pity (btw I wonder how dept charges effect on submarines is modeled). Just curious about dedicated mods, if any.
