Title: DOWNLOAD CHINA Starter Map Pack
Post by: farang65 on October 31, 2009, 08:02:49 PM
Well,Here it is,

I made these maps about 9 months go after learning how to make maps from Kevin P's tutorial.
These maps were all made from his tutorial.

With all maps you'll have to finish Kevin P's tutorial from Upon a successful loading of the map in order to save missions on them. Then move on to his Texturing tutorial.

From memmory the map scales are as follows;

China_North_Coast               1 pixal=75 kilometres
China_North_Coast_2            1 pixal=75 kilometres
China_Shang_Hai_Nan_King    1 pixal =75 kilometres
China_Coast_Formosa           1 pixal=100 kilomtres
China_Hongkong                   1 pixal=75 kilomtres
China_HahNan_Island            1 pixal= 100 kilometres
China_Hankow_I-Chang         1 pixal=100 kilomtres
China_Kunming                     1 pixal = 100 kilomtres

Load.ini examples; use the file names

China_Hongkong China_Hongkong/load.ini
China_Kunming China_Kunming/load.ini
China_North_Coast China_North_Coast/load.ini

Enjoy customizing, changing, playing with and tinkering with my China starter map pack.

I now use a mix of Kevin P's tutorials and Clock Watchers tutorial.
I use Kevin P's tutorial for the ed maps.
I use Clock Watchers tutorial for the other maps.
I find making map_T with allocated textures in the Microdem program very interesting.

Once again enjoy.

Hi dude, downloaded the map and they look great. Of course they need filling in with objects airfeilds etc. You mentioned two tutorials in article assosiated iwth the download. Could you possibly give the E-mail address for them both so I can have a crack at this. Also do you know where in particular download airfeilds. If this is not possible pardon my ignorance because I'm new to Il2 modding.
I've been dogfighting over Manchuria in a mythical campaign for months, it would be nice to extend the campaign over other areas of china.

Thanks

Hi There,

You can download an updated version Version 3 of Kevin P's Map Making For Beginners and Textures For Beginners

HERE

http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14643&start=0 (http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14643&start=0)

Start with the  first tutorial Map Making For Beginners from Upon a successful loading in the game.

Finish that tutorial. Then move on to his Textures For Beginners tutorial.

Airfields are covered in the Textures For Beginners tutorial.

If you are reasonably new to map making you hve to have an IL-2 Game map making version specifically for map making.
Kevin P shows you how to set up this version of the game at the very beginning of Map Making For Beginners.

His instructions are very very clear and easily unerstood.

Cheers Kirby

Hi There,

Don't thank me Thank Kevin P.

His tutorial/s really started me off in map making about a year or so ago.

You'll get addicted but it's lots of time consuming fun.

Hope your on the better side now.

Nice to see someone from China here.  ;)
One draw back with these maps are the possible objects for these maps.
You could only use soooo much of the Pacific Buildings but then it still wouldn't have a true feeling of being in China.
I have no idea how to make new objects but a China/ Asian object pack would be a calling in the future for these maps.

On another note my wife is Thai/Chinese so I too have a lot of Chinese culture to deal with.

Hey there Kirby!  This is the first time at having a good look at SAS and I didn't know you had these China starter maps up.  Thanks for sharing and perhaps someone will take interest and complete them.  I'll have a look myself but I'm also too busy with other projects right now.

Hi there,

Made these start up maps a long time ago.

Roughly around two or so years ago Just after Kevin P's first amazing map tutorial came out.  ;D :D

Let me know if links are still good as I have changed to Gamefront for uploading.

If any one is keen to work on some of them feel free.  ;D :D    ;D

Busy with 2 Paciific and 1 Pacific/Atlantic projects now all in 100 pixals scale.

Pete's Mission Bug South Vietnam started off from one of these little start up maps.  8) :P :D ;) :)

Look at how it's developed over this time.

Hi Vampire Pilot

I made these starter maps some years ago. After learning how to make Manan Island from Kevin P's tutorial.

Feel free to tinker around with them.

They are for anybody who may want to complete the maps..

China will be Kirby's next project  ;D  just kidding!  I dunno!

I thought about doing one or two because China is such an important theater that is being overlooked.  I'm taking a break from map building and flying more.  Maps take so much time and I missed flying.
I think the biggest discouragement was lack of information on airfields, what they looked like and location.
I compiled a list of the airfields with their general locations but that's as far as I got.

don't let that hinder you;)
so far we have nothing, so any improvement is appreciated by the community.
Also, if you have collected information and there is not more.... then it is what it is. Nobody can prove it being "wrong".
If it is made believable it is absolutely okay in my book.

I just wondered if anyone has any of these maps under their wing.
Personally , I am most interested in the Shanghai/Nanking Map Battles of 1937 - I hope it goes a ways to the west!
These become much more relevant with all the great late 30s aircraft coming down the pike lately.

Anyhow, just a knock to see if anyone has been or is interested in tinkering.

Kopdorfer, IIRC Poltava made a campaign on that very point using 1 of the maps.

I messed around with the map myself - not very successfully. My rice paddies were pretty lame. :-(

In any event, I was really interested in a late war USAAF China map which would extend further West and cover more territory.

I also had the Kunming map, but found that it covered territory to the west of Kunming. This area was a spur of the Himalayas and pretty high, barren and rocky. It was interesting to fly over a couple of times, but useless for anything other than perhaps a "Hump" mission or 2.

Post by: Riptide_One on July 05, 2012, 10:47:34 AM
I would like to see a Kumming Map. There are dramatic mountain landscapes in western China and I understand that this area was an active air combat zone up to the end of World War II.

I've tried my hand at modifying maps, but did not get far with it. My hat is off to anyone who can actually create a map. However, I would like to offer some thoughts on how developing the China maps could be approached:

Airfield Locations - After putting in the airfields for which there is least some information about, I would put in speculative airfields to make the map mission builder friendly. The speculative airfields could be textured so that they are not very noticeable from a distance. That way, if someone thinks a given airfield is inappropriate at a certain location, at least, it could be ignored. Ideally, there should be enough airfields to go around for both the Red and Blue sides. In the absence of more complete information, I think the emphasis should be on making the map readily playable.

Airfield Facilties - I suspect that most were of a very primitive nature. I would assume that all were turf or compacted earth. Those near a large city might have some sheds or even hangars. For those in more remote areas and for which there is no specific information about the airfield, I would put in only the landing strip and let the mission builder decide whether airfield facilities consisted of buildings or just a tent city.

I would put make sure the runway was flat and usable. Unfortunately, on some existing maps, not all airfields are usable.

River Crossings: It is my understanding that there were few, if any, bridges over the large rivers in China in the 1930's and 40's. So, I would put a minimal ferry landing on both sides of a river crossing on the roads between major cities.

Cities and Villages: Regarding cities and villages, I would begin by putting a street texture at the site of the city. Having a texture suggesting turf where there are non-farm type building just doesn't look realistic. It appears that the more recent maps include some kind of street texture at city and village sites.

"China" Objects - Another problem with Asian maps is that there aren't enough Asian style buildings available. The few existing Asian buildings are made for Japan. They have been used on other Asian maps because there is nothing else available. Traditional buildings in China are somewhat different. It would be a great help if someone could re-skin existing objects to create some Chinese style buildings, just like they did to create Mediterranean buildings.

I hope someone, with the ability, will take up this cause. Some China maps would be a great addition to IL-2.

Cheers,

Riptide

The issue w the Kunming map is that it has little coverage except for the Himalayas. I think it was just taken at random wo really figuring out what the mapmaker was really getting. So just 1 or 2 airfields and a lot of very high mountains.

I repainted existing objects into Mediterranean style buildings for Agracier's maps. I only wanted to make a few but it turned out into 80 buildings or so and for Redko's desert maps I repainted several objects into desert ones.
Redko also requested me if it is possible to do some Asian stuff.
The point is we don't have buildings that come close to it for a repaint. And the included Japanese objects are quite cliche/stereotype.
What we need is a 3D modeler for buildings. But that's too much asked.
I think we need to deal with what we have right now...  :(

I have a question related to houses: I would like to add a certain type of houses on a version of Ifni I plan to mod as WIP noon mod thanks to agracier and Uufflakke's beautiful work..I basically search for modern houses farang65's ElSalHonNic style (the skyscrapers), only flatter.

Sort of Mediterranean row houses ca 30ms (max) in height, do we have anything like this in our modded objects database?

Just skipped the objects base in both FMB and FMB+ and at least we seem to have a huge load of possible options, only most of them rather WWII style European house blocks.
Thank you again...back to work. :D

The Formosa map in this pack, is more usable than agracier's, in DBW, because of mainland China.

I used my pathetic map building skills to copy many of his airfields to this map, so that I can fly patrols from Penghu island, west of Formosa, to the mainland.
My skills at airfield leveling are so bad, that working on this map, caused my head to catch on fire, from the effort.

I wish that somebody who actually knows what they are doing, would work on this map.

Hi Guys,

just letting you know I went crazy there in the early beginnings after I made Mannam Island from Kevin P's tutorial.

Some start up maps were just made to see how they looked in FMB+

With the Formosa map I chose a bit of mainland china

Some maps are 75 pixals some maps are 100 pixals.

Did these a few years back.

Made alot of others as well.

In regards to China maps we do need a 3d guy to come up with an amzing China Objects pack.

Cheers Kirby

Regarding China buildings, I believe it is true that a modder with 3-D skill would probably be needed in some cases. For example, maybe a 3-D modder would be needed for a town entrance like the one below.

The roof tops of temples and other buildings do include details that a I suspect would require 3-D work.

The same could probably be said for a Chinese style pagoda like the one below.

However, I think that some existing buildings in IL-2 could simply be re-skinned to look like many traditional Chinese buildings found in rural China even today.

(In the picture above, I am referring only to the single story house in the foreground)

Here's a example of a traditional, old village that in time got surrounded by large city.

I think the structures of these buildings closely resemble some houses included in IL-2. All that is needed is to change the object's skin a little.

Below is a example of a village house roof.

I think it would be great to have buildings that look the part on our Asian maps. Note that the buildings shown above are also applicable to Korea and I think other parts of Asia as well.

Cheers,

Riptide

Greetings,
After installing this map and playing with it for a few minutes, I couldn't save the result from FMB. Some say it's because I'm missing a few objects in my minimally modded game (Modact 6.4 + C&C 3.031); where, then, can I get these objects?
Title: Re: DOWNLOAD CHINA Starter Map Pack

They are just start up maps to get you going on editing the map yourself.

There are no objects airfields or anything just a start up map for you to populate, add airfields have fun tinkering with textures etc.

They are just a very basic and simple landscape map only

Cheers,
Kirby

Thanks for the prompt reply.
The problem is, it won't save as .mis file BEFORE or AFTER any change made to it. Could it be the version of game I'm running (4.13.4m with Modact 6.4 & C&C 3.031) that is preventing it from working?
Edit: OK tried it with other maps created by other Modders, and guess what? I couldn't save any of the missions I've created in .mis format. So the problem is not the maps, but my n00bish ineptitude.

OK I got it. The map is meant to be a starter blank for something functional after some editing, not to be flown as-is.
Edit: yes, as stated at the beginning of the thread, it does require some editing as per Kevin P.'s instruction. On my way to bomb Hsinchu/Shinchiku now in my CACW P-40 (historical even (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%96%B0%E7%AB%B9%E7%A9%BA%E8%A5%B2): 11/25/1943).
