Title: Goose
Post by: Edlor on March 23, 2017, 04:02:18 PM
Goose G21

The Grumman G-21 Goose is an amphibious aircraft designed by Grumman to serve as an eight-seat "commuter" aircraft for businessmen in the Long Island area. The Goose was Grumman’s first monoplane to fly, its first twin-engined aircraft, and its first aircraft to enter commercial airline service. During World War II, the Goose became an effective transport for the US military (including the United States Coast Guard), as well as serving with many other air forces. During hostilities, the Goose took on an increasing number of combat and training roles. Wikipedia

This is based on Mikoyan99's PBY Catalina Version 1.02 available here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,36461.0.html A big thanks again Matt.

To use simply swap out your Pby folder with this one. Tested in 4.12.2m with Modact 5.30 and I could only get this to work in B.A.T. #JTW2 module. No change to the air.ini or skin folder. I apologize for the lack of extra skins due to my template being lost when a hard drive failed. I am also looking into how to make this amphibious as well :)

From the original readme:

Code: [Select]
PBY 3D Upgrade for Ranwer's and Enisgn Ro's PBY/PBN Mod, version 1.0
Author: mikoyan99, SAS forums
Date: 16/08/2013

Full credit for the orginal PBY/PBN mod goes to Ensign Ro and Ranwers,
and to the original game authors. This mod is a blend of the stock PBN,
the above's turrets/cockpit/weapons and my weapons/3D mods in order to make a more versatile catalina.
Additionally, a reflector gunsight has been added to the cockpit. I assume it's stock, however it was taken from Poncho's
P-47 cockpit mod to save extracting it fresh:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,31007.0.html

The original mod can be found here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,476.0.html

It shouldn't be necessary to install the original mod first, as the modified classfiles
for the PBY are included in this version. However, the original mod is required if you want to fly the PBN.
You can either install by pasting this one over the PBN/PBY mod or, if that isn't installed, by moving folder PBY
to #SAS and adding the following lines to the listed files:

To air.ini:

PBY               air.PBY 1                                     usa01 DESERT

A version of the original grey scheme is included.

This mod updates the PBN Nomad 3D model currently in the Catalina slot
to a "true" PBY-5 Catalina. Replaced and upgraded parts include:
~Nose turret (inside and out)
~Tailfin and rudder
~Hull - bow is shortened and the addititonal step is removed from the stern
~Skin - a basic "Black cat" skin is now the default
~New weapons suite, some fictional, mainly historical.
~New weapons models. Individual cannon and machine gun models, along with rocket rails, have been newly created.
The forward facing .50 caliber machine guns and 20mm autocannon
were fitted to the "black cats" in the pacific

Thanks again to Mikoyan99, Ranwers and everyone else involved in bring us the PBY's

Cheers,

Edlor

This has been moved to WIP again as the mod has many open issues. Modders are free to take it up and finish it . :D
- no collision boxes (takes no damage)
- AI can't take off (engine damaged on spawn)
- gear function not plausibly solved, no amphibious abilities yet

If no one else helps out with a slot, in about a month I may be free enough from work to try to "re-learn" how to make slots.... maybe use the J2F Duck as a placeholder since it already has amphibious code, carries the correct bomb-load, and has arty-spotter already coded as well.... it'll take time though.  I have to re-learn everything and re-download all the tools.  Hopefully someone better at it will jump in and knock it out faster!

Thanks guys.

I'm glad you like it and you're very welcome. :)

@ SAS~Bombsaway  Not a problem mate. I'm hopeful that we'll get a slot soon enough and I hear ya re the Windows 10. That's why I love my Windows 7  :D

@ barrett_g So does this mean you'll have to find another aircraft for your countdowns ?  :D :D That would be great if you do re-learn how to do slots. I've been trying myself but it always seems to elude me. Maybe I'll take a break from the modelling and spend a year or two figuring out the java side of modding.  ;D

@ duffys tavern Thanks. Glad I could make this one possible and I tried to get the dimensions as close to those of the original as I could. ;)

Cheers and thanks again,

Edlor

Hello to everyone, waiting for some soulmate who can give us a dedicated slot for this beautiful sea bird .... but especially someone who can let him take off without one of the two propellers badly cluttered and maybe if he can even give us the possibility to land on an airport track with his carriage ...
anyway, waiting for these things if anyone interested anyway I would have a RAF livery to be placed in community ...

Dear all,
I just installed  the Goose of our good Edlor into WAW3 without moving or using my PBY. It works in QMB.
I just noticed that it has no flaps, therefore it needs a long run during take-off.
Does it have something to do wit my nonuse of the PBY?
Best regards.

Same for me in a 4.12.2 with SAS ModAct 5.30 game version, tried each FM but the same.

I do not have a 4.09 game but will test in DBW later. ;)

Edit:

Same for DBW 1.71, port engine is damaged.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

I believe this aircraft was not completely finished before Edlor passed away.
So you may find some problems are still existing on it, so do not expect a "perfect" aircraft.

It is needing some fixes.... but it is better to have it ,  than to have nothing at all  ;)

I am not a good modder but I will try to do some fixes for it to the best of my abilities, and
if anyone else can do some little fixes, post it here and we can all enjoy a better flying airplane.
Title: Re: Goose
Post by: Gaston on July 11, 2018, 08:05:33 AM
Installed in BAT/WAW.

After a few tests, I can say this :

-even if, when actionning landing gear, it is written on the screen "landing gear deployed" or "landing gear in", visually, in external view, nothing happens (landing gear does not come out of the fuselage),

-BUT if you want to land the plane on the water, you MUST deploy it, even if visually nothing happens (if you don't, you will break left engine, even if landing on water happens smoothly !!!). If you land on the water with landing gear out (but you will not see anything ut in external view), all will happen well, you will be able to stop engines, and after, to start them again, nothing will break.

So, this solves the problem of landing on water and taking off. I did not try it in FMB yet, but I think same logic is valid.

On ground (I mean on a "solid" runway), landing gear is not out, so the plane is not usable from a normal base.

This probably has to see with the fact that it is not amphibian. Ans I think this is the reason why AI aircrafts have problems.

My 2 cents...

This apart, plane looks very nice.

Now, question : I tried it in BAT/WAW with 4.09 FM. Should I better use 4.10 FM ? I ask the question...

All in all, that is also what max said.
the mod is unfinished business on the 3D modelling side of things.
There is no amphibious function, the wheels are just cosmetic show.

it does not matter what version you use it in.

Title: Re: Goose
Post by: max_thehitman on July 11, 2018, 05:49:36 PM

I believe the aircraft cannot land on the ground as well as land on the water,
doing both things.
From what I know up to now (unless there is a new mod I am unaware of) this function was not made into
the IL2-1946 (yet).
As far back as when the PBY-"Black-cat" was being made, this was not possible either, that is why the wheels
were just on the airplane for historical-reasons (in the skins) but they did not function or were used. The airplane can only land on the water.

With so many breakthrough developments and new ideas already created for this game in the past years
(for example; Helicopters, modern Jets, vertical-takeoff+landing jets, HD-skins, radar, etc. etc.) one day someone will
figure out how to include this "special code" into these aircraft.
I have no idea how, but one day it may happen.

:( The Goose is definitely a hydro that I particularly love, the amphibious function would be nice to use but for me it would be just an option ... I would be able to get it off the water without problems, and instead in the takeoff function always starts with the engine left stuck, with the crumpled propeller, does it happen to you too? I would be enough to understand how to prevent this malfunction ....  ;)

In fact there are two!
The first of its kind is a Fi-156 with floats L-5 Sentinel Amphibian (03/2012) (with wheels under the floats) that can land and also land!

I don't see any collision box!
So actually this plane is indestructible!  ;)
ah, now I know what's going on, Thank you for the clarification Epervier.
there is an amphibious aircraft inside Il2: the JF2 Duck. The landing gear is operated through the dive flap command.
In fact there are two!
The first of its kind is a Fi-156 with floats (with wheels under the floats) that can land and also land!
It is a pity that Fi-156 with floats that we have in the game has no wheels.

I had a doubt, so I checked... it's an L-5 Sentinel Amphibian (03/2012).  :-X

AAAAAH!!  :o That is correct !
I completely forgot about those airplanes. I have them in my game too.
I have not flown them for along time or did serious testing with them, but I did paint skins for them.
:-[  I am soooo ashamed. I have to fly them again.

So, we do have airplanes that land on the ground AND on the water, the Sentinel floatplane and the JF2-duckS seaplane.
Get that java code into this Goose airplane!  ;D
