Title: Gourdou Lesseure GL-32, Gl-633, GL-450 & French Bombs [4.10]
Post by: Dreamk on April 09, 2012, 12:09:47 PM
This evening, a trio of uncommon aircraft is joining "La Glorosia"  - The Gourdou Leseurre 32 and derived Gl-633 and GL-450

The Gourdou-Leseurre is often disregarded as "outdated antique" - this is wrong. The GL-32 was a good fighter in his time, teh GL-633 was locally developped by the Spaniards to exploit the qualities of this plane in diving. The GL-40 variant was devised from the start as a dive-bomber/fighter by the French (and apprently at least one reached Spain). This was a very good and nimble plane, but its evolution was cut off by the taking over of the company by Loire, and buy the successive re-organisation of this last company - typical of the situation prevalent in French aeronautical industry in the thirties (the Italians, the Americans and to some extent the Germans, understood rightly that the basis for a healthy aeronautical industry was the civilian transport sector - others who didn't understand that, crumbled soooner or later).

The FM is different for each plane, as historically - they are the juncture between ww1 and ww2 technologies and this is felt - high torque, low speed on the Gl32, lower torque, but still quite felt and definitively higher speed on the GL450, with the GL633 in between - All these planes are fantastic gliders and acrobacy palnes due to their parasol conception and large wing area. This may be paradoxally a problem when you want to land as to reduce speed fast in order while deceasing altitude to land is not always obvious - it demands a long approach generally.

The 450 (also called 410 in some sources), has, as a matter of fact, an engine almost identical to the M-22 of the first series I15 Chatos, and increased stabilizators surface, reshapped fin and backswept wings - it has surprizingly different characteristics from the others though looking generally similar -as a matter of fact it was a trial done in 1936 to get a "new life" to these planes as makeshift fighters - it didn't succeed as the concurence was the Dewoitine 510, and already in the pipeline the Dewoitine D520, and it was totally outclassed.

(you need to drop the Arms_France folder in your mod directory (for instance the #SAS) in order to be able to load the Gourdous as the use some of this French ordnance.)

The mobile rack works fine...in level bombing - in dive bombing there is a bug inherent to the fact that apprently the bomb hook cannot be linked to a mobile part and the initial ballistic trajectory of the bomb in dive bombing is somehow strange in Il2 - something I already knew - probably its' the reason why neithere the Stuka nor the Dauntless have such a mobile arm, but anyway, I think it adds something....

The cockpits are much too modern for this plane (the real cockpit was very close to the SPAD XIII one) but real historical cockpit will come later

These planes include the full range of French Bombs of the thirties - Meshes and Hashed Java Files, ready to use on new planes - (although the Gourdous use only 2 of them) - 10kg Incendary, 10kg PA, 40kg Fragmentation, 50kg Type A, 50kg Type DT, 50 kg Type GAMM, 100kg  Modele 1930, 200kg  Modele 1930, 500kg Modele 1930, and a GPU pylon.
I found period official documentation on French, Russian and Italian ordnance, and even on Spanish ordnance (pre-war, Republican, Catalan Republican, National) Bomb paint is an interesting thing subject - The yellow is in fact the classical "French postal yellow" used traditionally for public metal installations standing exposed to outside weather such as public mail boxes - a medium ochre yellow covering the red minium anti-rust paint used in France.  This is by the way an issue found generally with other countries bombs. The Italian bombs for instance were grey, light blue or blue (and there happen to be "interesting" shades of this colours in the vartious simulators, including Il2....very beautiful but totally missing the historical real shades)  But let's take for instance the grey of Italian bombs - and when you look at samples present in Italian museum (or photos form the ones at the museo del aire) you understand at once what it is really - it's the color of the classic Italian anti-rust paint. The light blue and medium blue described in official docuuments become also obvious when you look at remants of Italian bombs - classical Italian Lorries paint of the 30-60s (what they probably were - lorry and locomotive truck paints were frequently used for painting bombs all over Europe) - quite far from the "artistic" creations of some illustrators/skinners. Same thing for the medium blue and asphalt grey Russian bombs.

Right ... these are planes no one would ever dream of otherwise putting into a commercial sim ... which is a shame cause they are wonderfully colorful and ramshackle and atmospheric of the times.

OK, you got me there. I had bet that next deliver would be the Letov because you said fighters first and, for me, SCW Gourdou Lesseurres were more in the bomber category, but you're right, GL-32 was fighter stuff. :P
Thanks a lot. Circo Krone, here we come!!!  ;D

+10^10 to all "thank you" to Dreamk. SCW week on SAS1946 should be recorded to Guinners book.

One question about this aircraft. I looked at number of photos and pics of GL series planes and haven't found any wing armament (particulary those huge barrels on 450 model). Russian sources claim it was armed with 2 synchronized (not wing mounted) machine-guns. Is it historical "for Spain only" variant? Can you clear this situation?

Yes it is. It has the code 'LG' on the fuselage which is the Republican code for the Gourdou-Leseurre 633.

As a matter of fact the original GL32 was armed with 2 cowling Vickers 7.7mm and 2 optional wings 7.7mm - a very strong armament for the late 20s (not even the thirties!)
The aircraft were decommissioned by the French Armee de l'air and stored a few years before the SCW begun. When the civil war erupted, the Spanish and Basque governemnts passed a command for such planes as they knew they had good record and could be available immediately - as a matter of fact only part of the planes were "re-activated stocked aircraft" , the Gourdou Factory re-activating its production line to complete the order with newly buil planes. In accordance to the Spanish demands the planes were furnished without armament (this was not so much a matter for the Gourdou as they were initially equipped for Vickers, but most if not all French planes from the mid-thirties onwards were equipped with 7,5mm caliber weapons, while the Spaniards used 7,7mm calibers - the assessment of the expected problems of maintainance and ammunition approvision brought the Spanish to a very logical conclusion, as Vickers 7,7 and adequate ammo were locallly produced in Spain and a standard equipment). Although Spanish sources give the armament of these planes as 2 wing mounted guns, we cannot exclude that some planes if not all were also equipped with the original cowling guns. A next update of the mod will include this option.
Bombs - which kind of bomb exactly was mounted in Spain under teh Gourdous is a matter of discussion as there is a lot of conflicting data. I decided to go after the photographic evidence and the original data of the plane (about its capacity of military load carrying) - and the conclusions are easy:
Maximum total bomb load: 200 Kg
Either a single 200Kg bomb under the fuselage, or 2x100kg under the wings struts (a GPU rack was installed there) - or 1x100Kg under the fuselage + 2x100 Kg under the wings
It is quite possible that insted of 100Kg bombs under teh wings they were equipped with 50Kg bombs, but photogarphic assessment of dimensions makes the former assumption rather valid.
BTW - most probably these bombs were not French bombs but locally produced Spanish Bombs (or even later Russian bombs - either imported or locally produced) but the as French wanted to sell their old bombs stocks, their use is quite a possibility if not a probability.

Thanks DreamK - and anyone else involved in this sudden deluge of wonderful OLD aircraft!
We who benefit from all this creativity owe you a  mozza!!
How many nations airforces operated at least one of these planes?, and so, how many obscure "Forgotten Battles" can we now re-create?
-and has the number of French planes suddenly quadrupled?? [at least]
This is just the greatest flight sim ever. No other can touch it for resurrection of so many long-departed aviation scenarios.
& that of course, was Oleg's aim. A visionary!

A good place to start looking for operators of these or any planes is here:

http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww15/f

Sometimes you need to do a little searching in other sections besides fighters to find the model you're looking for. But in many cases you'll find a good many operators and profiles for some otherwise obscure and forgotten planes.

I will upload later a comprehensive fix, but in the meantime, you can edit manually the hier him files to correct this bug:
in hier32.him and in hier633.him, replace the current entries for [StrutsL_D0] and [StrustR_D0] by these ones:

thanks for that link, A Gracier

Even in the SCW itself , this aircraft did things I'd never heard of, eg:
"...some were modified to carry two 110 lb bombs ...
A dive bombing attack led by Miguel Zambudio scored decisive hits on the Nationalist battleship
Espana in April 1937. The battleship finally sank, much credit going to the LGL-32 C.1 at a late stage in its career."
[Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft, Orbis, 1983, p1995]

"...late stage.." is an understatement!
Fancy this li'l old plane doing that??!   Billy Mitchell would have been impressed.

Thnx for this great plane, but I couldn't install it properly i think. Game returns to desktop when 20% on loading screen. I use IL-2 DBW 1.71. Any ideas?

20% ctd means some java files are missing in the installation - generally due as a bad path - often when decompressing a suplementary subfolder is created, causing this kind of mistakes - you must have your java files in a Gourdou_Leseurre_32 folder and this folder in your mods folder.

thank you dreamk :) i was thinking about some java things, but extraction path is correct with 3do folder and java files in the right places.. could be a missing necessary java from some other mod, or a conflict? in my last dbw install i had no problem at all with your scw planes, now i have different mods so.. boh LOL i must check when @ home

:D thank you again! (i'm drooling about your he111, you master' hehehe)

Tested with partial success in 412.1:

Plane load and fly flawless , small issue in rear view due missing fuselage , gunsight misaligned (due 412.1 different POW I presume)....

Can you post a log?

These mods are fully independent.
20% failure means you lack some java files in your installation - check whether you installed the full bombs pack together with this mod.
